Chip
12-08-2006, 12:24 PM
That's a good idea. It seems as though it's expanding on the pads that have multiple surfaces, but has planned it more effectively by making the surfaces more "kit-applicable". If that's what it's all about...

It would be freakin awsome if each color produced a different sound.
May I ask why (doesn't matter, I will anyway)? A practise pad is a practise tool, not an instrument.

Hey, everyone!

Thanks for the kind words! "Hands, Grooves & Fills" will be distributed worldwide by a MAJOR company January 2007! Watch for the announcement here...VERY EXCITING! The details will be announced at NAMM, which I will attend! If it's any sooner, Bernhard will be notified..

As for the P4 Practice Pad, the production is in the works, and it will also be "debuted" at NAMM. This was one of the first finished pads that I used at PASIC. Here's the details

It is the FIRST pad with 3 DIFFERENT LEVELS on one surface to practice movement and seperation of hands, and it also has 4 DIFFERENT SOUND SURFACES on one side.

- The top level is hard Red Neoprene, great for practicing ride or cascara rhythms

- The middle level has 2 surfaces, medium Black Neoprene and soft Blue Rubber, which provides little rebound.

- The bottom level is the regular Gum rubber for normal practice.

You can see me using the P4 on the Hands section of my DVD, and on the clips on my page here on drummerworld.

There will be an announcement as to how to purchase and where very soon!.

Thank you all for the interest..

I will also post pictures soon.

I recently watched your videos, mr. Petrillo, and I have to say, Im amazed. Very musical and oozing with groove!

I have one quick question - The cymbal between the ride and main crash - what cymbal is that!?
I am in love with the short sound of that cymbal.

I checked the Zildjian website, what cymbal was that, but it said on your cymbal configuration page, that its a 12" K splash. Seeing as I've never heard that cymbal and it seemed to big to be 12" in the video (at least to me), I thought that maybe you could help me out. Of course, my eyes could be decieving me, haha.

Thanks,
Martin.

Pat, thanks for answering my questions!

I got Pat's book and dvd for xmas and have really been enjoying it, I had a couple questions and e mailed Pat and both times he answered right away with great explanations.

I especially like his rudiment tab system, and the rudiment solo he gives to work on.

What really hit home was his comments on the free stroke, for some reason his comparisons made me understand better.

Hi all...Thanks for the kind words..

In respond to the question - "The cymbal between the ride and main crash - what cymbal is that!? I am in love with the short sound of that cymbal."

WELL...Long story...It's a Zildjian 14" Special Dry Crash. When I was picking out my cymbals, I fell in love with the Special Dry line. Unfortunately, ZIldjian is discontinuing that line ! Good thing I have these!

Also, the splash that I am using on the video is a 10" prototype I am developing with Zildjian which is along that same "dry" concept...quick, dark and dry, not your usual splash..

Thanks again!

Pat,

I love the drumming. You have a very gospel-influenced style of drumming (at least in the clips I've seen on here). Did you ever play in a church or is it just a style that you love to play?

Pat Petrillo

Drumbum

Thank you for your compliments.

I have never played in church. I wish my Catholic church had a little hipper music! lol...However, if you read my bio on my drummerworld page, you'll see that my "roots" are diverse, having grown up on The Beatles, and then JB, Parliament and others. I think my stint with Patti LaBelle really brought that out of me even more. I played with some excellent players in that band, an I was exposed to alot of cool feels. I try to roll all my influences together and hope it comes out like me... R&B and Funk/Fusion are the types of things I do mostly.

Although, on my website, www.patpetrillo.com, you'll also hear some Pop Rock anf Jazz clips as well!

Hey everyone! I recently sent Pat a message asking about his Ratamacution exercise that is available to see on this site. I received a very quick reply and he asked that I post here for everyone to see...

My question for you concerns the Ratamacution clip. I am a novice drummer. I have started to learn to read notation and what not and really enjoy just playing accented patterns on my practice pad. When I came across this clip I was happy to find the sound that has been in my head being performed very nice and clean! =) I'm confused on how you arrange it in a sextuplet. To me it just looks like you are playing single strokes with accents thrown in awkward places. I understand (atleast I think I do) what a ratamacue is, but from what I have found on the web they are played a little differently than what you showed here, I think you played it with longer gaps inbetween the accents? Could you maybe write this pattern out or show me where a similar one is written?

I hope that all makes sense somewhat, I'm really not sure how else to describe it =) Thank you very much for your time!

-Matt

Hi, Matt

First off, thanks very much for the comments...I will answer here, and it would be cool if you posted this question under technique or my thread so many more can read the response..

Basically, as I explain on the DVD, I am phrasing the ratamacue more "contemporary", so as to apply to the drum set a little easier. 1st, I start the Ratamacue with a tap as opposed to the traditional drag, and I also phrase it like a sextuplet, ala Gadd. The sticking is; R l l R L R, L r r L R L
Practice this phrasing first, and then you will feel it. I also do a couple inversions, as it is an exercies. There are many drumset applications I show on the DVD as well.

Hope that helps! and do try to post this on the site for all to see

All the Best!

hi pat

i'm asking all the pros this question. i think the answers could be very instructive to many of us.
let's say there was a totally new drum rudiment that was suddenly discovered and was so totally applicable that any drummer worth their salt would quickly try to learn it, master it and use it in recordings and gigs. this hypothetical new rudiment is quite hard to play and totally unrelated to any other rudiment. it is so good that you know that the next time you sit in on a session the writer is probably going to ask you to use it somewhere in their song.
my question is: starting from scratch what would be your way of learning it?

thanks
j

Pat Petrillo
01-13-2007, 03:16 AM
Say,. Nutha

Extremely hypothetical and improbable..but here it goes...

Basically, I am an "ear player" since age 5. Even learning all rudiments "by wrote" or "by ear". So, no matter what it is, I play what I hear. I've learned many "new rudiment/hybrid stickings" rudiments and they are learnable once you have most other stickings together. As long as it's coherent, musical thought, it's achieveable thru repetition and breaking it down.

I truly believe we are all just trying to reinvent the wheel in some ways. I have found by teaching students to memorize immediately, they become more in tune with their ability to retain many concepts like orchestration, phrasing and ultimately creativity

Hope thats the right answer :)

lovely answer pat. thanks. how do you teach students to 'memorise immediately'? as a self taught drummer i played drums for 12 years before i began to even attempt to read...and to be honest i NEVER ever read while playing these days. i read and figure something out (from the latest drumming mag for example) and then play it by heart because that was the only way i knew how for more than 2 thirds of my career. is this what you are talking about? this kind of essential drumming memory? i feel that reading while playing would get in the way of my flow particularly as i often have to sing and play as well.

to refine my original question.

let's say that a pupil of yours was learning a totally new rudiment...say the flamacue. you had in a lesson showed them how it is done and by the end of the lesson you were satisfied that they understood the pattern but a week later they came back and told you they were having problems organising their practice. what practical advice would you give them in terms of setting up a schedule and/or break in the new rudiment. what in your experience has been the best way to organise practice? how long to play the exercise at a given tempo, how often etc?

thanks

hi pat

sorry to load you up with questions but here's another one...

in the August 1992 issue of modern drummer there was a great and useful article titled: THE 25 GREATEST DRUM RECORDS. because of it i bought steely dan's AJA in a time when i was almost exclusively addicted to AC/DC.
they wrote this article by researching across the industry but in particular they asked some of the top guys for their top ten selections. i'm hoping to do a similar thing here on DW and post the reults in a separate thread eventually.
So if you would be so kind please give us a list of your own top ten (perhaps your current top 10) records/albums. it would be helpful if you identified your favourite out of those and dropped in a line why it is so...but this is not totally necessary. think of it like if you were going to be locked in a remote log cabin for a whole winter, which 10 albums would you take, if 10 were all you could take?

thanks
j

Pat Petrillo
01-28-2007, 04:42 PM
Nutha;

Well, there are lot of variables..Will I be able to have my MP3 player?? :)
If I had 10 TRACKS, it would be different list than 10 ALBUMS...

Also, it's not NECESSARILY just for the drumming, but for the MUSIC..Thats what moves me the most.

But since you said 10 albums, and it is only for a winter, I would bring these..

1) "Magical Mystery Tour" The Beatles
Great Songs, and puts me in a great mood.

2) "Strength" John P. Kee
Inspirational message, motivating, great drumming and pocket.

3) "Funk Gets Stronger" (Compilation) Funkadelic
Compilations are cheating, but I need to hear 5 of the songs on here every other day!

4) "Jarreau" Al Jarreau
Great grooves, lyrics, uplifting, "Gadd"....

5) "White Album" The Beatles
Songs are great, thought provoking..2 discs!

6) "Gratitude" Earth Wind & Fire
I love live records, and this one captures the vibe of EWF..I get chills!

7) "Friends" Chick Corea
Gadd and Gomez..'nuff said.

8) "Songs in the Key of Life" Stevie Wonder
Inspirational and brings me back to my childhood!

9) "Syncronicity" The Police
Great energy and pocket!

10) "Hard Days Night" The Beatles
Some of these songs were the first I learned to play when I was 6 years old. This is why I am a drummer!

Perhaps that gives you a glimpse into my musical tastes which aided my development

All the best

thanks pat. i also love live recordings because there is an element of risk and as a muso i know what a stretch those guys are taking ...and yet doing so well. live music is always a first take. at the moment i'm listening to chris de burg live in ireland and i get goosebumps during the song called 'revolution'.

i like your list and will have to hunt the funk one down as it sounds important.

Pat,
You are one of the best instructors that I ever had. You are really unlocking my gifts and talents as a drummer. Your book Hands, Grooves and Fills is very informative and I like the way you put it together. With every groove it gets a little more challenging. I like how you challenge me every week with the lessons that you have me do. Your teaching and your book is just opening up my creativeness and really helping me to be more free on the kit. Thanks Pat for all the time that you take with me and for your book/DVD.

I was looking into purchasing this book but figured I'd ask a few questions first. Well, first off I'd like to congratulate you on an amazing career in the drumming industry. Now, As far as this book/CD, what level and style of drummer would you recommend it for? The title of it leads me to believe that it can help just about anyone playing any style since it covers alot of the key aspects of drumming. Also, what should we as the user expect to come away with from this book? A better understanding of how to compose fills and grooves? Or does it simply just teach specific grooves without necessarily giving advice on creating our own beats and fills? Not sure if these questions make sense, if they don't, let me know- I'll try to reword them.

Pat Petrillo
03-23-2007, 10:41 PM
BD, Thanks for posting!

Basically, if you can groove and know some rudiments, this will help you take it to another level based on specific exercises and grooves that are challenging yet applicable. The grooves are useable, not a bunch of random "patterens". I believe everyone can benefit from it because of the play alongs alone!

People who have used it thus far have emailed me that it's easy to follow and understand, and its FUN! Thats very important as well.

You will have a better understanding of how to compose fills, because there are very specific examples laid out that you can then use to create your own movements.

Hope that helps, good luck to everyone, and thanks

I got your DVD package and I must say I was really impressed with the material...

It was very organized and well thought out....I especially like the fact the all the grooves have a play-along that really gets you to play that particular pattern...

I also like your breakdown of the hand/foot pattterns especially the 6 note groupings that we hear so often...

Hey Pat,

This will probably seem like a shameless plug for our upcominf clinic together to those reading this thread but that's not my intention at all. I just got through checking out your book/dvd/cd "Hands, Grooves, and Fills" that we received they other day. You did a GREAT job with that book and video. I'm really impressed and it's wonderful to see someone work in the rudiments into their playing and make them practical. Great book. Great DVD. Great playing.

Good job man and we're all looking forward to the clinic in September.

Hey Pat! I see this thread all the time and have never said "hi".

I bought one of your video tapes (VHS format if that tells you how long ago). I've never been much of a disciplined practice or warm-up guy, but your snare drum excercises are to this day seriously the only thing I ever do on a pad, or use to warm up with. They helped bring my left hand to life and gain some degree of facility as far as "chops" are concerned. Good tape, nice to see you on the forum.

Thanks again!

Thanks.

Vinnysimmo;

Thanks for the question!

What I do NOW is much different than what I did when I was getting things together in my younger days..

But, what I try to do is address a little of everything when I practice. I definitely do all my hand exercises first, then I would go over some groove combinations with various ostinato type things. Finally, I will work on soloing and fill ideas.

Basically, by addressing everything at once, nothing gets "left behind". I talked about this in the article I did in a recent issue of Modern Drummer. It's also the basis and philosophy of my DVD "Hands, Grooves, & Fills". I feel everything is connected, and you should try to tie it all together. What I work on with my hands directly effects my drum set playing in every way.

Recently, I have been rehearsing with my band (Gary Grainger and Chieli Minucci) for a new CD we are recording in the fall, so I am working on parts..grooves and such.

Hope that helps!

Hello Pat.
I realise that the most important part of learning and improveing is repetition, but im haveing some problems with my foot independence. So my question is, what do you think is the best way of improveing my foot independence?
Thanks.
//Vincent.

Pat Petrillo
08-27-2007, 05:20 PM
Vinny

In "Hands, Grooves, & Fills", I address this with a series of Bass Drum rhythms that improve not only independence and coordination, but timing, accuracy, and phrasing. The rhythms are accompanied by live band "Play Along" tracks to help with your feel.

Putting ostinatos with the hands over these rhythms really helped me develop these skills.

I also practice with my foot on the floor to develop consistency of motion and timing. I use the ball of my foot and lift from the knee, pushing off and returning to the floor in one motion. This is shown on the DVD as well..

Hope that helps!

Hey Pat, bought your book and already in only 2 weeks it has been a tremendous help, if only I had it the past 6 years!

My question is about the set you use in the video though. I am in the market for a new kit and was going to buy the Sonor Force 3007 series, but because I have A)heard great things about GMS and b)loved the way they sound on the DVD, I decided due to budget constraints to get a nice set of Paiste Twenty series cymbals and 2 custom snares from DW forums members.

On the GMS website, it mentions that you play the CL line series which I found hard to believe because I thought you said your drums were made of Ash, and only the SE and GM series are supposedly in ash? If that is the CL line, then damn that is really good for what is considered their "lesser" series.

Thought so, I REALLY like the sound of the ash drums. Two more quick questions about GMS: Is there any difference between the SE and GM editions besides the lugs (mostly soundwise) and what was that finish you had in the DVD?

Oh and by the way, your rudiment tab system is the best thing to ever happen to me haha.

Hey Pat
Just got your dvd/book as a birthday gift from my daughter ( I knew I'd done a good job raising her! ) It's just what I needed as I've been getting away with murder for the past 30 odd years. I've recently apprehended myself, been tried and found guilty and sentenced to starting from scratch. I've suffered Carpal Tunnel through bad technique (happily sorted with surgery) and only actually learned more than a handful of rudiments over the past couple of years. Your dvd is the kick up the arse I needed at this point and makes sense of stuff I've been having problems with but I would like to ask one question. Whilst playing are you actually aware of each individual rudiment you use BEFORE you play it or are they so familiar to you they just happen. It may sound like a strange question but as p.diddles, d.strokes etc are still quite new to my playing I find I'm ultra aware of them and the anticipation I feel before using them can often spoil their execution.
Thanks and it's good to finally have your stuff available here in the UK.
All the best.

Hi, Pywacket

Your question is an EXCELLENT one, and I thank you so very much for purchasing my Book/DVD package. I really hopes it makes you not only a better drummer & musician, but makes drumming more FUN and enjoyable in general..

So....As I mentioned on the DVD, I have been playing combinations like these for a longtime, since age 10 or so, so it is a "muscle memory" type of thing. So, once you memorize these, and start putting them together with the TAB System, you too will be able to plat these effortlessly. The short phrases first, then longer ones. A goal would be to memorize each of the solos in the combo sections.

The memorization process means they will come second nature. I do not really think of them before I play them, necessarily, but more or less "at that moment", that is the "rhythmic phrase" I am hearing in my head. As you will hear on the MP3 CD, each of these phrases have a definitive "melody", so that's what should be going on as you're playing..So as you play along to the CD, hear the phrase, and let it help you learn the pattern.

I truly believe that once you start playing and memorizing these solos, you'll be putting your OWN combos together soon. And isn't that really what we all want to do??

As for the grooves...the same thing applies. Learn them by reading them in the book, or watching the DVD, then try to memorize them as you practice with the Play Along CD. That way you are really just relying on muscle memory, and relaxing as you're playing the groove.

All the best, my friend, and thanks for spreading the word in Jolly 'Ol England! Hope to be out for a clinic soon! (hint hint..ask your dealer..hint, hint :)

Let me know how you are making out!

I have to say that at 54 it's not easy re-inventing yourself. I have 4 decades of bad habits and p**s poor technique to clear up but over the past couple of months, since getting stuck into Hands, Grooves and Fills, I've accomplished more than I have in the last two years. I cant recommend it enough to players of all levels and though Pat is not yet that well known here in the UK I have a feeling all that will soon change.

hi pat.

i just spent a wicked half hour practicing double bass (i'm not a double bass player but i want decent facility in the basics eventually) to your warm up 2 :''5-5-3''

i used it asthe foundation for a call and answer exercise. i played
5-5-3 - 5-5-3 on my hands and then on my feet in the next two bars and so forth for about 5 minutes at one tempo (started at 100bpm)

then i moved on to 5-5-5-5-3-3 without stopping and did the same thing for 5 minues and then i just upped the tempo by ten and continued.

it was great fun and i saw improvement. i think i'll work this one twice a week into my routine.

Hi, Everyone

My NEW Signature Practice Pad, the P4, is now available thru American Music Group for worldwide shipping. (International orders may cost more)

It is the worlds first multi-level practice pad, with 3 different levels, & 4 different types of rubber playing surfaces on the same side, no "flipping" required! It allows you to move around like you would on a kit, and separate your hands for isolated independence practice.

It is made of "MDF Light" material, so it weighs a little less than a Real Feel, and is MUCH lighter than the new Vater Pad...plus it does more!

It fits in a snare basket very well, and the grips are out of the way of the playing surface.

The first 300 pads will also have my signature on the box, as well as on the side of the pad.

Here is a clip which demonstrates it further.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUMywK_q_Ro

For more details, and to order yours, follow the below link.

http://www.patpetrillo.com/the%20P4%20Practice%20Pad.htm

The Cost of the pad is $50, shipping included!

Thanks very much, and I look forward to this pad helping drummers improve their practice technique.

This looks great Pat. I like the fact that you can have mutiple feels and sounds on one pad. That's useful for hearing patterns that may be playing on two different drum surfaces (snare, cymbal etc..)

I'm just curious, why is the price not listed on your website? I just clicked on the Buy link and I saw that it is $60 shipped? Is that correct? Excuse me if this is out of line but if that is the price I think that is personally a bit too much for a pad.

to quote bilbo baggins: lately i feel like butter spread over too many slices of bread.

i'm sitting my grade 8 exam in drumming in february so i dedicate a lot of my time to preparing for that. plus my band keeps adding new songs to the list while at the same time i'm trying to keep a lot of the stuff i was working on before i decided to get the qualification going. basically i've got way too much material and good intentions. i have given the whole book a glance and the dvd and i am excited at the prospect of giving it the time it deserves early next year but right now i use only parts of it as a warm up in the morning before i attack the bulk of the day's practice.

how can i help Simon Mellish? let me know.

Hey Pat.

Could I ask, when you say, for examle, a five stroke roll connecting does that mean four strokes ( rr ll ) with the fifth ( r ) actually becoming the first beat of the following rudiment?
Thanks.

You know that feeling when your learning any real skill and, to coin a phrase, the penny finally drops? The lights go on and you can see the signposts much clearer? Well that's what your teaching package has done for me after more years than I care to remember. I've studied stuff by the likes of Thomas Lang and Dave Weckl and, whilst admiring their vast talent, I've walked away scratching my head and thinking what the heck was that. My wife is a teacher and insists that some people do and some teach. Well luckily for drummers young and old you know how to do both. All I can say is Thank You!

I was looking on the S-Hoops site, as I've been extremely interested in them recently, and I came across your video on there. After seeing that, I just had to see others! I watched a lot of it on youtube, and it just blew me away! I'm definitely picking up your dvd thingy soon. Are you going to be doing any clinics around the Tri-State area in the near future? That means alot to me! I am first and foremost a drummer, but I love teaching and doing clinics, and I have been doing it a long time. I like to get to the heart of what most drummers need. I feel like "Hands, Grooves, & Fills" is not about ME...it's about YOU, and how I can help you all achieve results and become better players.

Anyway, glad you like it, and keep in touch.

Hello Pat,

I have been a fan of your playing for a while now. I originally heard of you through some of your fellow DCI pals Dennis Delucia, Matt Savage, Jay Webb, etc. I worked with them through my own DCI years.

Anyway, I wanted to share a transcription I made of your playing.

I posted it in the Technique thread here:

Thanks for the inspiration, and I want to pick up your dvd/book package soon!

I am sure it will be great for myself and my students!

Terry, what an amazing job you did. I am flattered that you took the time to transcribe the solo.

It must have been quite a time consuming effort, and I thank you very much for doing it.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, and I guess the next thing would be to see if you could transcribe the solo at the end of the DVD...(NOT) !

Hi Pat,

Thank YOU for the great feedback.

This whole transcription thing really is a labor of love for me. I have been doing it for a long time.

I learn so much from every one that I do. I also like to adapt things into my own personal style.

You are a great player and a great educator. I hope I can meet up with you someday.

I have the set as well and it's really easy to follow and the rudiment TAB system, which is really new to me, but I'm sure with practice will be easy to remember. The DVD compliments the workbook really well. I also love the play-along mp3's on the CD that Pat includes in the workbook!

I recently downsized to a four piece setup - one rack tom, one floor tom - and I'm lovin' it. More comfortable setup, easier to transport, less drums to tune, etc.. My only problem is that I am having some trouble coming up with interesting fills using only two toms. My question is, does Pat's DVD have many fills that are - or can be - orchestrated on a four piece kit ? In his videos I see him playing a 5 piece.

scott

I have his book and DVD package, and the fills are all notated for high tom, snare, floor tom and bass drum. I wondered the same thing, as I too have only a four piece.

I haven't made it into the fills section yet.

Pat Petrillo

Thanks for the input..

The fills are written simply using snare, rack tom & floor tom. There are many orchestrations you can then do from there, as I demonstrate on the DVD. So, learning them on a 4 piece is perfect!

I attended a clinic this past weekend in New Jersey and had the opportunity to see Pat in action! He delivered a fantastic presentation of grooves, fills, and ways to apply rudiments to the drum kit. The audience (as well as I) loved every minute of it.

Pat is a terrific teacher and a wonderful person to get to know. Hopefully he comes to an area near you!

By looking at your CD choices and your playing style i see that you have a little gospel influence. Thats what i love about your playings its very groovy. In that POCKET...so groovy that it make you hurt...uh

Mr. Petrillo, I just wanted to thank you directly for your amazing DVD/Book package. It has really opened new doors in my playing! Specifically, I felt like I was stuck on specific patterns in my playing, like the same figures kept appearing over and over again - that is, until I discovered your book and DVD! The different grooves have especially helped me get out of the ever-recurring rut I found myself in. Also, I LOVE the fill concepts you present in the fills section, and have been trying to integrate them into my playing. So again, thank you for all the help and encouragement you have provided me! I look forward to devouring any other educational material you might put on the market :)

PS. I almost forgot! I wanted to ask you what kind of heads, resonant and batter, you had on your toms in the DVD?

Hello Pat

As many already have done in this thread, I want to congratulate you for “Hands grooves and fills”. I’ve been working with it for a couple of months and I feel it brings a lot to my playing. I spend most of my time in the “Hands” section so far. I must confess that I was a bit skeptical about the Rudiment Tab System at the beginning. It took me a while to try these combos, but once I did, I was hooked right away. I have done a lot of hands work with Stick Control and Master Studies, but I never really practiced rudiments per se. Your various combos are now a big part of my routine. Your super-clean demos of these on the CD constitute a good learning utility and… a stimulating target.

I also like your warm-ups. Simple and efficient. I have a question about the opening text of that section where you mention that every exercise should be maxxed to the fastest tempo possible, until “we feel the burn” … This somehow comes in contradiction with the idea of “always stay relaxed”, “always remain at a comfortable tempo”, etc. that we see in many other textbooks. Do you feel that pushing the limit like you suggest in the warm-ups applies also to the other sections of the book? Was this approach suggested to you by a teacher, or does it come from your personal learning and teaching experiences?

Or, in other words... Do you feel that speed comes from.... pushing the tempo like that ? ... Gaining control at slower tempos ? ... Both ?

Thanks for your time, and thanks as well for that great package.

Man, thanks very much, and I am so glad you dig "H,G&F". It's for guys like you that I created this package, to open new doors, and show some new ways of phrasing grooves, creating fills, and developing hand coordination

As for the heads, they are Remo Clear Emperors on top and Clear Dips on the bottom.
I usually use Pinstripes or Emperors.

Thanks SO much, and I'm glad you're getting alot out of "H,G&F"! It's very rewarding to hear so many success stories and satisfied drummers!

The "feel the burn" is the forearm muscles at work when you push up the tempos on exercises like "5,5,3", where you are constantly pushing the rebound and forearms to perpetuate the rebound and get a workout. This is natural, and it means your endurance is developing. It's like getting a good burn when doing light weight lifting with alot of repetitions. You will feel that muscle group fatiguing..and that's what is required to build the chops and endurance. After a while, it will take a longer time to "feel the burn", because the muscle group is conditioned and toned, so it will take a little longer to get going. THIS IS A GOOD THING! That means you are getting in shape!

SO, by using the rebound technique, you are working those muscle groups in the forearm, and getting them toned up...I DO stay relaxed, but sooner or later, you gotta crank up the tempos and hold it there to really develop the technique and endurance..

This way of building chops is an old drum corp method of repetition, increasing speed, holding it, increase speed, hold it...So, it works, and I did it alot over the years. This is how I developed the endurance. When I started playing alot of shows on tours with various artists, this came in handy. When I work out with students in lessons, I push them to their limit of fatigue, and I tell them, if you don't feel this every time you practice, you're not really working out.

This applies to the hands more than the grooves, however, you can apply it to th fills if you want more speed and accuracy

Thanks again, and keep in touch!

Pat's new P4 practice pad is the bomb diggity!

I had the opportunity to buy from Pat directly and it takes practicing to a new FUN level (no pun intended!). The 4 rubber "zones" give entirely different feels and the main black pad on the bottom level is just the right amount of give and hardness to mimic a snare drum-like batter head. I also really dig the grey pad zone, it feels softer and just like your bouncing on a floor tom or something.

It's a great way to practice the rudiments like you are flowing around the drumkit... but on a pad!

Good job on this one Pat! Now we just need your signature drumsticks to come out!

Hello Pat,

I was on your website and listened to some samples of your H.G.F CD and looks like a great tool. I am (54) and still do about 120 shows per year, the music is from the 50's and 60's. Not the most challenging music but I try to do give it my best every night and take pride in my playing. That's also my problem I feel as though I am at a stand still technically. I am hoping that by purchasing your CD and finding the time to sit down and really work at it that it will help rejuvenate me and put some excitement back into my playing.

Any advice you can give to an old rocker is greatly appreciated.

Thanks and keep up the great work.

Thanks very much, and I think H,G&F will be perfect for you to break out that "2&4" thing, without going crazy "linear" or unusable grooves.

The play along tracks are fun, and if you can't play the groove I created exactly, you can play something similiar, and still be creative. Thats the FUN part! There are many different grooves that can be created with these little "mini songs" I wrote for each groove...SO HAVE GO FOR IT!

I look forward to hearing from you

welcome home pat

pat patrillo clinic report
it was great. i arrived in the pouring rain at the London center of contemporary music at about 5:00 and sat around waiting for Pat to come. i let him in (the LCCM front door is tricky) and immediately he was the warm friendly guy you might expect having watched his DVD. Soon we were upstairs setting up the clinic kit and putting new heads on the drums. it was cool to watch him tune up and then warm up. i saw amazing feel and dexterity up close. what an experience. i was glad i could be his roady for the evening. i helped de-buzz a tomtom and did some adjustments on the recalcitrant hardware. His cymbals are really cool. he is particularly happy with his gorgeuos 21'' prototype zildjian ride. it is unlathed and covered with a mixture of the biggest hammer marks (about the size of a baby's fist) and tiny hammer dimples. it has an enormous clear bell great projection and almost no wash. i have recently switched to pinstripes on mytoms and was pleased to see that Pat likes them too.

i felt really foolish when i whipped out my wife's D200 camera only to find it had no battery. Doh! Pat gave me his camera and so at least we had a few shots of the show, but really you have to be there to see it.

At around seven the room filled up (about 30 of us - nice and cosy) and pat started. first up was a warm up solo that was tasteful and choppy with lots of rudiment orchestration and blinding singles. then pat played along to a selection of tracks including a beatles song and one of those really tough half swung tunes. He handed out experpts from his book and talked us through each one with application and avice on learning them. As you can imagine the evening was about HANDS (we saw some great pad work on Pat's new three stepped pad [which i tried out BTW and it was superb], GROOVES (probably the most useful part of the clinic - Pat talked us through developing a drum part from the obvious choice of groove when first hearing a bass line to displacing notes, adding ghosts etc and so eventually to change the obvious to the unique and yet still appropriate [he calls it groove-alution]) and FILLS (i really love pat's fills - he takes one idea at a time and really creatively applies it all over the kit and within grooves)
pat also spent some time talking about how he broke into the industry and gave us a view of the modern industry and how intolerant it is of things such as being late, drunk or drugged.

after most people had left (about 8:30) a few stayed behind to talk to pat and we had an exclusive look at his bass drum technique which was yet another eye opener.

all in all, if you ever get the chance to see pat in clinic - GO! you will be glad you did. even if the opportuniy doesn't come up, get his book (no2 on the modern drummer poll) and start putting a bit of patrilloness in your playing.

ps: thanks pat for everything

I am endorsing the new Ludwig drums, and they sound great. They are the classic maples, 10, 12, 14 floor, 20 Kik. I think a good maple drum with great edges from most companies will sound really good.

The heads on "Hands, Grooves, & Fills" are Clear Remo Emperors. I tune the drums in the middle of the range, so that they really sing out. My sound tends to be fat because of the tuning, but also the way I hit and rebound from the drums. The sound id "pulled" out of the drum, so the approach is very important

Thanks, and I hope you enjoy "H,G&F"!

Hi Pat,

Enjoying H.G&F very much. A quick question. Right now I have only been working with the 5 warm-up exercises and making some progress. Would you suggest mastering those warm-ups prior to moving on or do you think I should only spend a certain amount of time on the warm-ups each time I open the book and then move on? How would you advise working with the book?

Thanks again,

D;

The Bass Drum is tuned fairly loose, just a couple of turns above the wrinkle spot, with Remo Mufflers inside, touching each head.

The head on this was an Aquarian SuperKik, but, since Remo has come out with the PowerSonic, that's what I use and endorse.

I did a series of excerpts in Modern Drummer (with more to come), on this very subject, that "H,G, & F" in concept was designed to work on all three of these important elements SIMULTANEOUSLY. So, do the hand warm up section, then do some diddle combos in the rudiment section, and do a couple RC grooves, a couple "Essential Ghost Grooves", and start doing a couple "Rhythmic Inspiration" or split 16th fill ideas.

You don't have to "master" each section to move on. Do a couple things at the same tiime to improve your overall game!

Thanks for enjoying "H, G & F"!

Thanks Pat I appreciate the follow up. By the way I am having a ball with the play alongs. I notice that they all count you in with 4 beeps but when I listen to some of them I have trouble with the count? Are all the play alongs in 4/4 and is it just the accents / kicks etc throwing me off?

The p4 is great too.

Will you be in the Boston area anytime soon?

really loving the 5-5-3 exercise. i've found yet another way to practice it. i use it to practice my rolls now so that it becomes 9 - 9 - 5. it's really cool because the ground work has been laid in the singles and i am practicing my rolls starting with either hand.

AWESOME...You LOVE that exercise, don't you ! :)

Go to the Rudiment TAB Section, roll and drag combos, and there are great roll combinations there as well to work thru

I will be back out there JUNE 1 - 9, can we do a day of lessons/classes at your studio?

I now always start my warm ups with the "Diddle Combo" and love the simplicity and endurance building of the "Roll in Rhythm" which I've adapted slightly, adding an extra double to the end of the 17 (making it a 19 I guess) allowing me to swop the leading hand. For some strange reason I find the six stroke roll very difficult leading with my right hand but not with my left. I would have thought it would be the other way round being right handed. One question Pat. Is it natural to experience difficulty getting up to speed on some rudiments and not on others? I can burn up the fives, sevens, drag taps etc but remain sluggish on paradiddles and anything with a flam in it.

Pat Petrillo

Pywacket

Hi! Yes, it is normal for some things to come easier than others. In regards to the sluggishness on diddles and flams, both of those rudiments require that you a have soft and low diddles, or in the case of flams, the grace note. That will come by relaxing those notes and "dropping" them in softly and smoothly. It's basically a phrasing issue. Be sure to watch the DVD on the execution of diddles, the "whip/drop" motion..(aka...YIKES ! ...Moeller) This should help the flams.

Keep me posted...

PS..I will be back in the UK June 1-8..I will post the locations, maybe we can do lessons..

Hi Pat!! It's so great to be able to talk to you! I have been using your book and DVD for the past 4 months or so.. and it has helped me improve my drumming more than anything else :) If I had the chance I would go to one of your clinics, but I live in New Zealand -When are you coming here?!!

Anyway, a question about double strokes: you mention in the book that you don't 'pull' the second stroke, but the way my teacher has taught me is to use a 'push-pull' technique i.e. using the fingers to pull the stick towards the palm to create the second stroke. However I find that this way of doing doubles really strains the tendons on the back of my hand. So could you please explain to me in more detail how to do a proper double stroke roll? Thanks.

Btw I have never seen a drummer who can groove like you do on the DVD.. the musical performances are awesome! You're the best :)

I used to be the same way!!

Now that I take lessons with Pat, my technique has taken a complete 180. My hands and forearms no longer hurt and I have more control of the stick.

I'll let Pat answer with his 'expertise' but in learning how to play rudiments and get that "FLOW" goin with the hands, you don't use any fingers or force a second note with your hands.. Think of dribbling a basketball. You use your hands and forearms to create that "undulating" motion.. Almost like a wave.

Now put the sticks in your hands, play on the pad, and keep that dribbling motion going. The natural rebound of the stick will create the upstroke. Now keep your hands down for a split second and that second bounce will come by itself! Sorry if my explanation isn't clear, certainly in person it would make sense! :-)

Hey, Joe (great name for a song : )

Man, thanks very much, and I am so glad you dig "H,G&F". It's for guys like you that I created this package, to open new doors, and show some new ways of phrasing grooves, creating fills, and developing hand coordination

As for the heads, they are Remo Clear Emperors on top and Clear Dips on the bottom.
I usually use Pinstripes or Emperors.

Stay encouraged! Also, please vote for "Hands, Grooves, & Fills" in the Modern Drummer Readers Poll under Method Book!

Thanks so much for the kind words, and glad you dig "H,G, & F".

I regards to rolls, I do NOT "pull" the second not, as I feel it makes the roll sound forced and uneven...I've never tried or have been taught to do that, ever..SO, as I mention in the DVD, you should aim for creating to open & even bounces by RELAXING the back fingers, not PULLING them. Using the forearm. push the stick down and let it bounce, allowing the second note to bounce up evenly. It's important you do not hit the first stroke too hard, because thats when the roll will sound "top heavy", like an accented first note. Try to achieve even bounces practicing the roll exercise in the Book.

That being said, it's not important that each not be "exactly the same" when executing a roll. Thats really over rated. The roll should flow and have a lightness to it, and the second note will always be a little under the first, thats just natural. Aim for equality without forcing the notes in...bounce them..Hope that helps!

Great stuff! I love the groove on the track you play along to. It has a feel I'm particularly fond of but have always found difficult to pin down. I can remember trying to get the groove right on The Bands "Rag Mamma Rag" with a covers band I played in many moons ago and just couldn't get my head round that "sort of" half time feel and the impression that some of the musicians are playing, straight some of the time, whilst others are swinging it, some of the time, in no particular order. Little Feet are another band who pull it off with ease and many of the early rock n roll songs also had a similar straight/swung feel . Wonderful stuff.

Pat Petrillo
06-24-2008, 01:05 AM
Pywacket..

Thanks, man, it's a groove I love laying down, and it's really a feeling of "in the gaps" that can be achieved by taking the swing, and "opening up" the beats, so they have a little more space..I liketo call it a "lilt"..

I grew up listening to lots of those records, Earl Palmer with Little Richard, Professor Longhair, etc..and even today I love Zydeco and things of that nature.

The track I am playing to is James Booker, piano only, no rhythm section..and you can really here the feel in the piano, so I just lock to that, and have a good time :)

Be on the lookout for the CD in the Fall! LOTS of grooves, like this one!

All the Best

Pywacket

What a great description of an inspiring feel. "Lilt" Says it all! I defy anyone not to foot tap to it.

I remember playing the classic Johnny B Good in a rock n roll outfit and recieving compliments from some real Berry fans for following the bass with four on the floor with a swing hat across the guitarists straight racka racka. Felt ah.......authentic. Yep that would describe it and what a buzz to play.

I'll definately keep an eye out for that cd!

Pat, I love all of the fantastic clips at your DrummerWorld page:

http://www.drummerworld.com/drummers/Pat_Petrillo.html

Awesome playing... amazing, blazing chops, WITH killer groove!

One thing on your instructional videos that particularly helped me personally was where you discussed that we should use our arms / wrists / fingers ALL TOGETHER. And that there is very little muscle in our wrists... it's mostly tendons and bone in our wrists. That helped me make a clearer mental picture about what's going on bio-mechanically, and helped me with playing more smoothly.

Just wanted to say thanks! :)

Pat Petrillo

byronand

Wow, thanks so much, man, it means alot, and I'm SO glad it's helped you. I think the flow of the mechanics is really a natural thing, and not too complicated, but with all the talk about "Moeller this" and Moeller that", drummers forget that Moeller was a MAN, not a TECHNIQUE, and he was just telling people to play relaxed and use natural rebound..

Another analogy I use is...You can't really tell somebody how to walk..Meaning.."OK, turn your ankle now, then, roll your foot, now, bend your knees"...It happens naturally because of physics and gravity, and the way things are connected...!

Also, the groove stuff has been my thing since I was a kid, and I just always listened to records, and played from my heart. Can't really describe it, but again, it comes out because of the music I listened to.

Thank you for your kind words

Hey, Everyone

Just a heads up, for those of you interested in my P4 Signature Practice Pad, you can now order it thru Cascio Interstate Music ! It's the world's First Multi - Level Practice Pad.

Here's the link:

http://www.interstatemusic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10051&productId=900228086&langId=-1

Each surface has a different rubber for unique feels and sounds. The levels help develop hand independence and creativity. It measures 11X11, it fits in a standard snare basket, and it's Made in USA.

The bottom level is a specially designed rubber that feels very natural, not too bouncy. The middle level has a harder neoprene rubber, plus a softer, grey rubber for less bounce, similar to a floor tom. The top level has a hard red rubber, similar to the feel of a ride cymbal. The base is a light weight mdf material, which is lighter than the HQ or Vic pads. It has a real "old school" look, with a modern twist.

Work your ride, high hat, or cascara pattern on the top pad, and use the lower levels to practice various snare and tom orchestrations. Or for an extra workout, use the soft pad for less rebound. Playing singles from the top level to the bottom level is real workout.

It's versatile, practical, and makes practice FUN ! You'll dig the different sounds each pad produces, and it's like playing a mini drum set.

Thanks very much for your interest. Shipping is worldwide.

When Pat first brought them to his lesson space, he was tuning the 14" floor tom... and he hit that perfect tuning spot.. That thing can blow doors off their hinges!!! HAHAH, right Pat? I loved it.

I recently was working on the Swingalations section in the Book, and they are super hip. Your performance on the DVD is great, and I was wondering how is the best way to get the fill ins that you do in between grooves on the "Swingin Play Along" track, and there are also some you play on the DVD that are NOT in the Book! (darn it !) Can you some day show those on line or something??

Great work, really diggin it.

Thanks very much for the kind words, and glad you dig the "swingalations" grooves. The first 2 are ones I use quite a bit, and the other ones with sextuplet ghost notes are pretty difficult to keep low and soft inside the groove.

As for the fills, some of them are in the "Fills" section of the book, and you can take anyone of them to use before going into the bridge of the song, and on the way back to the A section..

There are some other "fill variation" things I do that are NOT in the book, this is true! I couldn't really right ALL of them out, I will be putting some of these in my ON LINE LESSONS which will be coming in 2009..I am setting up my studio as we speak, and I will be offering monthly lessons for a small fee..

Thanks for your input.

Well, I just shot some footage for the NEW Ludwig 100th Anniversary DVD which will be coming out in'09. I was honored to be asked to be a part of this great project, and I'm sure it will be a landmark production, with input from many Ludwig artists, including Ringo, Jason Bonham, and more. Also, the "Learn to Read Rhythms" DVD is still in edit mode, so, I am trying hard to get it out as soon as possible...

Hi Pat!
I just wanna say that I am a new fan of your mastery of the groove! I caught a couple of your drummerworld clips on YouTube and was knocked off my throne! I am an older guy (I guess) 46.. is it too late to teach this old dog any new tricks?? Are there any dvds or books you recommend that will help me develop my left (read: less dominant side) and single bass technique. I am 100% self taught and have been playing about 30 years. My meter is good, my groove is good as well. My goal is to be able to set my kit up left handed and play it like I would a right handed (normal for me) set up, as well as adding more fluidity and speed around the kit. I don't consider myself a bad drummer. I just think that I have placed limits on my playing through YEARS of incorrect technique.. any thoughts? Thanks, James Milwaukee WI.

Groovallegiance Multi Media mp3 CD is in Mix mode, with a January release, and a new label has come into the picture...so I am looking forward to see where it lands! Along with the songs, there will be play alongs, pdf charts, and behind the scenes video clips/interviews.

Will keep everyone posted!

WHEWWW!! Count me in for that multimedia mp3 CD as well as the Ludwig video.. That's great Pat.

Also, your P4 Practice Pad is gaining the advertising momentum!!! I just picked up DRUM! and Modern Drummer for this month, and your pad is highlighted in both magazines! Way to go!

Cool handle!! Anyway, it's NEVER to late, and I think if you get my "Hands, Grooves, & Fills" DVD/Book, you will benefit from the groove ideas, play alongs. Developing the weak hand is about working both hands alternating different exercises, and that's what I cover in the Hands section. They are short and sweet and to the point, easy to learn. Here's a sample

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLjeECMlJQk

These will help speed and fluidity around the kit as well, plus there are alot of rhythmic fills ideas for you as well.

Thanks for the kind words, and let me know how you progress.

Hey man.

Someone brought this up in another thread, what do you think of using devices like the Beatnik Rhythm Analyzer to tighten up the hands?

Obviously you'd support your own practice pad, but have you got any experience with this sort of thing?

Oops!

I'm not really familiar with it, but, it looks complicated, and I don't really think it's necessary to have a computer "analyze" your time or "beats", as you have to develop the skill to be able to practice with a metronome and HEAR how you fit with the tempo...This is MUCH more valuable, and unfortunately, a forgotten skill these days.. To me, you have to hear yourself lock to a good metronome when practicing hands or grooves. HEAR IT, that's my advice.

Yes, my P4 Pad is very different, unique, and will give you a multi faceted hand workout..

Hope to see you at the AUDW Fest this year!

Hey Pat,

Enjoying HGF very much. The one warm up / exercise in the book that's killing me is the inverted diddles, the RllRLrrL and then going to the paradiddle etc. Wow. Must come to some easy but for me to do it right I really needed to take that one slow. Having a ball with it though.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you.

Thanks, and the diddle "inversiations" as I call them are really useful for connecting phrases together, so, take it slow, and once you get it under your hands, you'll use it everywhere!

Good Luck and have fun!

Congratulations, Pat....it looks like they've taken your original design and brought it to the next level.

Does that mean that those of us who have the original design own something special??? (lol)

Have they changed the feel of the rubbers or are the rubber pads they used the same as on the old design??

Once again, Pat; congratulations!! I think with the Ludwig name on it, it's gonna get a lot of exposure world wide.

The pads are the same, a little different color, but response is similiar. The rounded look is much hipper, and it's the same space between levels!

Hey Pat,
First of all this is Michael from the UCNP lessons. I'm really digging the New Orleans second line roots grooves you've got me working on. You do a great job tracing the history of grooves back to their origins and I'm having a blast becoming familiar with it all.

Second - I've got a couple questions here for you (or everyone) that may benefit us to get some insight into. I was watching a Tommy Igoe video and he was recommending using your imagination to picture particular atmospheric contexts while you play to influence the feel of the groove. For example, I think he was talking about the bossa nova, and he said when he pictures himself at the beach and really gets into the beach vibe it manifests in his drumming as the proper feel for that particular groove. Do you use visual imagery to influence your feel, or do you just feel it, plain and simple? Question 2: I have heard other drummers mention the importance of breathing mindfully, or even in time with the beat, as a way to facilitate I guess both keeping correct time and really getting into the feel of the groove. How important is syncing breath with the tempo to you? Or do you even think about it when you play?

Thanks for your input; see you soon.
Michael

Hi, Mike!

Yes, I do think that some of those imagery things help young drummers at times..although it may sound a little cliche.."picture yourself on a beach with a drink dancing with a beautiful brazilian girl"...for instance, that may make you RUSH the tempo, instead of lay back, if you know what I mean ;)

In general, I am vibing on the other musicians, who help keep the tempo in the pocket...watch and feel them, and put yourself in the moment of the groove..When I first realized this is when I was playing with Patti LaBelle, and at first, I was real excited, and the guys were like, "Hey, it's rushing a bit"..and after I started watching their body language and things, I started to put myself into their zone, and it really helped me settle in.

Breathing wise, I don't think about it too much..It is pretty relaxed and normal. I don't find myself breathing in time, or holding my breathe at all..

except when the bass player is new ;)..ANYWAY..

Hope that helps!
