I'n going to be buying one of these snares off ebay, and i have enough money for both, the vinnie is 475 and the chad 375 (aussie dollar). i dont know which one i want, at the moment im kind of leaning towards the chad as its cheaper and with the leftover money i could but new heads. i dunno. any help or experience with either of these snares would be apprieceated (dunno how to spell that).
yeah im pretty confused

i have the chad and i love it. fantastic snare -- i think i have a write up about it somewhere on here... try a search. Anyway, I have never played the VP snare, but for me the whole lame snake skin thing was enough to turn me off.
i think the chad is more popular on this board -- for what its worth. Meaning i think more members seem to have that one as opposed to the vinnie paul.

yeah, just not sure that i need an 8 inch deep snare, and the chad would be a lot more versitile

certainly. i think the VP could be a cool snare, but maybe not as your main baby.... i think the chad serves that purpose well. Im sure that there are lots of guys that play the VP as their main go-to snare and it works well for them.
one thing to consider with a snare that deep is the height of the snare stand. I have a pig lite 13 x 7 and i will tell you that i had to adjust my sitting position, my high tom and my hats to compensate. However this was a blessing in disguise for me because i am much more comfy now. :)

yeah. i also think fate is guiding me towards this, ill tell a story...
when buying my cymbals, i was going to go for a pst3 pack. fate, i believe, removed the item and brought me to music at noosa and they gave me an awsome price on some xs20's.
the VP has just been removed but there are two seperate chad's up there. fate, karma, wateva, haha it has its ways of working...

cant argue with that.... thank GOD you got the XS20's over the pst3's. I certainly dont think the VP vs. CS snare is the same comparison, but i do think the smarter buy is the chad.

i know...think how miserable and deppresed i would be with the pst3's. like, the xs20's arnt great, but compared to the pst3's...theres a big difference. yeah i know wat u mean, not the same comparison, but i think ill go with the CS.
anyone else's opinion?
EDIT: heres another snare ive found...its cheaper again, looks way better lol (finish looks better), but know nothing about it.

Tama makes nice snares. 13x6.5 is versatile enough to use as a main snare. The tuning range is decent. There is enough bottom end as a main, or tighter it would be a decent side snare.

I like the Joey snare a lot. it's like a downsized ultracast. I think it would work for a lot of things.

Do you think it would be better than the chad smith?

I don't want to hijack the thread or anything, but how does the Chad Smith snare compare to the Omar Hakim snare? Opinions?

Hello Elvis,
I agree, the snake skin thing is pretty bad. However, the sound of the snare is truly amazing. And, it is much more versitile than one might expect.
Either snare is good. I prefer the VP and own one. It is very, very loud and deep sounding. Very warm though. However, the Chad Smith is great too. It just has more overtones than I would like.
Fat Elvis is one of the true good guys out here. I followed his advice on my first decent kit and still love it to this day. It is safe to say that you would probably like the CS, but if it were my money, I would go with the VP.

GREAT NEWS
my local store just got a new (used) pearl 14x8 free floating snare. its around 370 bucks, but with cash i might be able to get it down even further.
what do you think? im pretty sure that its better than both the VP and CS, if it is i might have a new snare by the end of this week :)

thank you, mikei.... thats a very nice thing to say. I love this board and would have little reason to go onto the internet without it. :) I think pearl makes great snares and i am interested to hear the VP. I know they are popular and always seem to vanish at my local GC. I do like the depth of them. I think either the VP or CS would be a great buy. Heck, you could buy both and still be south of a DW snare in cost. Now thats a bargin!

hah! thanks larlev... you know, i think we are still tied at 4 -- unless you bought something i dont know about yet. You know, i just cant imagine you with only 4 kits. Seems..... i dont know..... so not you. Go get number 5.
dingbat purchased anything lately? 4 seems light for him as well... hah
i bought 2 more toms for my DW today.... does that count as a 1/2 kit? am i at 4.5 kits? ;)

I checked out the Vinnie Paul Snare and man is that thing loud. The snake skin in person was a little cheesy too. I would highly recommend the Chad Smith snare drum though. I own one and it is very versatile I have 5 snare drums and I seem to keep coming back to that one or my Ludwig Supraphonic. Get the Chad....great drum for the price.

I bought the VP snare at GC and it was only 315 with tax. The 475 price is for an autographed VP. But to tell you the truth it's the best once I put a high energy aquarian head on cause I hit hard. The original head was done in one set. The only other thing I need to change is get the lug bolts that don't come loose as easy because that happened to me often.

Wait wait wait, are you talking about buying a 400$ snare when you are playing xs20 cymbals, my advice, either keep playing the snare you have now or buy a cheaper one (with nce new heads and buy some decent cymbals. For 400 you could at least upgrade to some AAX's (if you are a sabian guy). Seriously, playing a really nice snare wont matter if you are banging on crap tin foil cymbals, but that's just my opinion!
...a buddy of mine used to have the Chad Smith Sig.
The first time I heard him play it, I came this close to stealing it from him. A couple of years later he sold it to me. I really liked it, and found it to be a very versatile little beast. It tuned well, had a great range, and seemed to suit almost any head combo you could think to try. The reason that I got rid of it was because I found a used DW 14x4" brass, which made the Chad another drum that I would likely never play anymore. The guy that bought it has been using it as his main snare for the last four years now. Some times I find myself coming this close to stealing it back from him.

This thread got me to consider the VP snare. I didn't have a snare of the 8x14" profile. I didn't really feel like spending $700 for a carbon fiber or fiberglass model.
The VP is around $300. I compared it to a $700 Slingerland of the same profile. I liked the VP more in many ways (sound wise) although the Slingy had more traditional maple looks.
I have got the ball rolling to order a VP snare. Should have it soon, as they are in stock, no lengthy wait.
I too have a drum dial (like Ross) and will see what this snare can really do.
Incidentally, This should be taken as proof that I like plywood too. And no, I don't like acrylic snares enough to buy one. The midrange isn't there for me.

Yeah... a set of AAX hats would probably be around the 600-700 mark. As for the two snares, although I haven't played either, I'd be leaning towards the Chad Smith for versatility reasons. An 8" deep snare may be a little to much sometimes.

O U C H!
You blokes have it rough. Are all the brands priced like that???
I think it's time for Oz to find a way to produce cymbals. Maybe in a cost effective way, like Saluda does. (That is import blanks from Asia and Europe, and lathe/hammer them there.)
I am giving thanks that cymbals are not that expensive here. Well, paiste sigs and UFIP bionic are...

Like everything is more expensive (and more expensive again because my local store is in noosa, big tourist spot, everything is dearer). plus we dont have anything like music123 or any of those sites (or do we?) i dont think we do....and the americian sites (the ones that ive checked out) dont ship to australia. plus, xdrmusclex, the xs20's arnt that bad, for the price i got ($700...wait! thats about the price of some hats!) they're really good
