I have a pair of 14" Zildjian K Custom Session hi hats. They're in perfect condition, about 3 months old. Last night I got the top and bottom autographed by Steve Gadd (he helped design these hats).

Do you think they're worth more now that he autographed them? Or is it not really a big deal?

I'd save them in a glass case. Don't play them, they will increase in value.

Seriously? Or are you just making fun of me.

P.S. These are my only good hats, I don't really have a choice but to play them. I just turn the hats so that my sticks don't come anywhere near the autograph. Any ideas?

I agree with Synthetik. Im not sure how much it will increase in value, but it would be cool having them hanging up in a glass case on my wall.

It mustve been cool seeing Steve Gadd and getting his autograph.

I am not kidding. Steve Gadd is one of the modern drum giants. Those hats are at least a keepsake, but likely will be very valuable in time.

pfff...that is a point I never thought about.
If I get an autograph on my K Custom Dry Light Ride (which is my baby) I`d still play it. I think a cymbal is made to be played...and even if "Avedis I" (the inventor of Zildjian cymbals in the 17th century) would have signed it. I think autographs on cymbals or drums don`t keep me away from playing these.

just my opinion...

Cool, thanks for the comments. I'll just use my old ZBT's for practicing and only use my K's when I need to record. Now to find a glass case : P.

P.S. Yeah, meeting Steve was awesome. He's a really nice guy; very easy to have a conversation with.

Something about like this should work...

:)

It's not just any random signed object or cymbal...it's a prototype signed by the creator and world-class drummer. It *WILL* be valuable.

on hindsight, you couldve made him autograph the surface, AND the bottom [underside] face. so then even if you do wear out the autograph, you could still flip the cymbal over and look at the undamaged signature.

i have this experience where i had my black bass guitar signed by some underground-famous bassist at two places, the fretboard [readable] and the black cover plate at the back [black on black, not readable]. the signature did wear out on the fretboard, but the one at the cover plate didnt, so yeah now i always make people sign my stuff at two places.

I have a set of Sound Lab Prototype hats, 14" K Custom Dry, also signed by Dr. Gadd. I play them and I doubt that the value will decrease much because of that. I'm very careful that I don't keyhole them, and I don't gig so they don't get banged around at all.

Very cool! I met Steve at the Zildjian tour in 2005 and he signed my 1983 Modern Drummer with his cover story.

might sound really stupid but what is 'key holing'? lol

its when (usually from metal on metal contact) the cymbal starts to wear away or crack around the hole

or it could be drilling a "keyhole" shape so that the cymbal wont spin and the sweet spot will always be in the same spot. but nowadays that's rare.
