Small Acoustic Gig Kit

here it is, the re-vamped seventies baby bass drum, with a few odds and ends added to make my second kit, used primarily for small acoustic gigs.

Composed of:

Rebuilt 16x15 Bass Drum, with 4 spurs
13x4 gretsch Steel Piccolo
14" Meinl mb20 hihats

All gibraltar hardware, Evans heads (G1 Snare, Hydraulics front and back)

Picking up a cheap set fo Roto-toms to add some different tonal colours to it, this set is used for its compact size ( a normal kit will not fit in my car), and i look forward to adding some mroe cowbells and tone blocks too.

I also have a cymbals stand that can attach to the hihat stand if need be.

oh man, that is so sweet!
Nice line-up mate...looks so confortable...but how would a ride or a crash-ride be with the set-up? just an idea what I would add.

Dude, sweet kit! love those kinds of little kits, must be fun to play! I would add a ride, perhaps 20" mb20 Meinl ride? overall , would love to have that kind of kit just to jam with friends!

Great little set! Easy to load, set up, play and take down.

I would echo Karl's comment about the ride cymbal. You could clamp an accessory arm around the hihat stand and have it support a cymbal arm with a 16-inch ride on top. That wouldn't add much mass and the cymbal could nest atop the bass drum head for transport.

Thats awsome man. I would love to bring one of those with me if i ever go on a trip. Those are so cool and fun to play on, especially after playing on a slightly larger than average set.

1. I didnt use wood hoops, mainly as there wasnt sufficient funds or needs to afford them, it sounds fine with metal hoops.

2. I use this for gigging and jamming, i drive a sports coupe car, so no other drums fit in there. It lives in the car, and when anybody screams "QUICK, WHO HERE IS A DRUMMER?'' I can galantly step forth and offer my services immdeiately.

3. Thanks for all the kind words, i put a few hours effort into filling all the holes on that floor tom to make it into the bass drum, and a few hours sanding and spraying it, i think it came out perfect. It will be geting its first live trial in a few weeks.

A quick update, im looking at buying a cheap, flat/jazzy ride that i can whack a few pop rivets into and not feel too ashamed to throw about in my car.

Ill record this in the next few days, and post up an example of how it sounds!

sounds good drozzy. the recording quality is fine. what did you use to record this? the bass drum sounds good. the new ride sounds good. what kind did you get?

Recorded with two shure pg58's as overhead, hanging aboveme, pointing roughly at the snare.

A pg57 about 1ish feet away from the front of the kick. Just eq'ed the bass mic a bit to get a decent sound.

I thought the decent sound was quite astoinishing considering they are the lower end shure microphones.

I used a 4 input Yamaha usb mixer, into and Adobe Audio recording program, cant remember the exact name. Very easy to use and has quite a few useful features.

The ride was my normal do-all Meinl Amun Power Bell 20". Pretty good for a very affordable cymbal, set me back only about 250Aus dollars, so probs about 125US dollars in terms of merchandising prices. (which seem to never have any correlation to actual economic prices)

Can't wait to add in the set of 3 roto toms!

cool. thanks for the info on the recording equip. sounds like a nice affordable setup. and does a decent job.

roto toms 'eh? i'm thinking of taking one of mine apart and making one of these wacky "roto-cymbal" things i've seen here. i don't even know what it sounds like, but i'm going to give it a try.
