for toms and snares.
and tell me the sound it gives off with your combo of the top head, and what you aim for.

tell me the shell composition too if you don't mind.

Evans Genera Resos (with clear Evans EC2s)

Evans 300 Hazy Snare Side (with a coated Evans HD-Dry)

Just sounds good to me, not too much ring, not a lot of overtones.

I'm totally in love with Aquarian American Vintage Thin. But, then, I'm playing all Jazz currently.

Snare batter-- Evans HD-Dry
Snare reso.--- Evans 500 glass

Toms batter-- Evans g2 coated
Toms reso----- Evans g1 clear

The snare sound I was after was a dark deep tone from the deep snares of the 80's. That combo helps me acheive that sound

The tom heads also give me a nice warm resonant tone whin both heads are tuned alike. I also can acheive a nice pitch bend with these heads that give me that "beeooow" sound of days gone by.

I play mostly classic rock from the 70's and 80's and these combos work great for me. Of course, it took alot of $$$ going through different head selections to find what I wanted.

I always like clear thin resos, and either coated single-ply or clear 2-ply heads for batters. i use the coateds for a high pitched, resonant, jazzy sound, and the 2-plys for short, deep, rock/reggae sound.
you should search the drum tuning bible, since it's got a lot of info about this stuff.

Does Aquarian make any 200-weight snare resonant heads?

LexHitReset
11-12-2006, 07:21 AM
right now i have g1 clears for resonants on my toms, hazy 300 on my snare.

g2 clears topping on my toms, not too thrilled with em, they're alright. HD Dry on the snare, not really digging it either, might go back to coated ambassador.

i'm not sure if they do a 200 weight for aquarians. check their site.

i've been using ATTACK double ply white coated "Thin Skin" heads for a while on the toms, though i just ordered some single ply white coated w/tone ridge to put on the new Pro-M kit.

I just recently put clear EC2's on my toms
and was dissappointed with the tones I was
getting from my 14' floor tom. I was hoping
for a focused sound, thickening up that wimpy
14' floor tom. Any suggestions?

cheers.

shells, are 9x12 and 10x13.
they sound pretty good, i wanted some ebony heads cuz i heard some on a drum solo, it was on drummerworld.com it was the drum trio with dave weckl, vinnie colaluta, and steve gadd. the secound drummer had ebony heads so i tried em i like em.
on the floor toms i got classic clears (reso) and performance II clear on batter. (16x16)

about thickening that 14", i went to a clinic from evans, and the tech, Josh, recommended g2's top and bottom to fatten up my 16" floor, don't see why not on a 14"...worked excellently on a swingstar 6 ply mahogany (i think) shell, and gives a rather wide tuning range.

he also informed me that evans is the only head company to recommend batters as resonants, but i don't know that for sure...i do know it worked for me.

That's a great tip there! I may try to throw on a G2 clear on my 12x14 hanging to get it really fat. I have coated EC2s on batter and factory ambassadors for resos. I may try that on my 14x16 too!!

By the way......is there a difference between G1 Clears, and G1 resonant glass?

I hear both those used and I'm not sure if they're actually different....thanks

You can't beat the industry standard...Remo Clear Ambassador for when it comes to resonant tom heads or even bass heads. The Ebony Ambassadors are fantastic on kick drums. As for snare it depends on the drum I'm dealing with. For some the Ambassador Snare Side works, for others I like the Diplomat Snare Side.

They aren't the industry standard for nothing! ;)

On my kit, which is a yamaha maple custom absolute, and a Ludwig supraphonic snare.....

Toms - Coated ambassadors top, clear ambassadors bottom.
Kick - Clear Powerstroke3 batter, black ambassador Yamaha logo head front.
Snare (6 1/2x14) - Coated emperor top, snare side ambassador bottom with 42 strand snare wires.

I've tried a million different types of heads but I always come back to this set-up. For me, it works great and I get a full, powerful, resonant sound out of the kit.

Just in case anyone is interested, I asked EVANS to see if this was true or would it help me with my 14-16 toms that have EC2 coated...here is the answer [ which by the way I received within 15 minutes]
Jeff,

Your heard right. G2 Clears on the bottom of your 14” and 16” will focus the fundamental pitch and reduce higher frequencies. The drums won’t necessarily sound “bigger”, but they will sound deeper with enhanced attack characteristics.

Nice tip I think.....thanks again rodie

Toms: Reso - G1, batter - coated EC2 on birch shells
Snare: Reso - Hazy 200, batter - coated EC2 on a maple shell

Still experimenting with tunings on the toms, I'm getting some great sustain out of my 12" at the moment, but struggling with the others, might get a drum dial, so when I get the right tuning I can make a note of it and get it right a lot quicker in future.

The snare I like tight and snappy, even though I have a 42 strand wire on a 14"x3.5" maple FFS, I've got a nice sharp and punchy, yet sensitive sound.

should have a 6.5" version of the same snare arriving in the next day or two, can't wait to see what the same head and wire combination sounds like on that beast.

Good question there: the Evans website states they're both clear 10 mils. I actually need new resos to replace the stock heads and I'm choosing between these two...anyone out there know the diff? Any info helps. Thanks.
