snared drum set

Hey everyone,i was sitting in bed last night and as per usual the strangest question came to me. Has anyone ever heard off,or knows it to be documented,that a drummer has ever used a completly snared drumset. the bass drum would be set up as per usual,but the snare and all the rack toms and floor toms have snare wires on them,any body ever heard of this being done?

that is strange,,,,, i have had the same thought,,but the kik would also have a huge snare on it,,we could call the kit; The Rabbits Nightmare.
the floor tom could be a detuned marching snare,,,

I've already decided, one day I'm going to do this. I think it would be incredibly cool to have all those different sizes of snares, and it would almost double the sound options!

Edit: I think I was also in bed when I decided to do this.

hell why don't you just make the snare drums instead of toms and tune them to get different cracks and sounds...that'd be sweet too.

Charlie Adams has a snare made out of a 18 X 16 or a 20 x 16 that he plays with double pedals. Ludwig helped him make it. It's pretty wild.

Personally, I don't see what would make the idea so great, it'd be like making a set of only rims, sure different sizes and materials would sound slightly different, but it would be the same type of sound for every hit. It'd defeat the purpose of why drummers today have snares, toms, rimshots, cymbal crashes, etc. all in one performance, groove or song.

but companies are always coming out with ways to add new sounds to our relative sets,i dunno call me crazy but i wouldnt mind having a sweet 16x18 effects floor tom/snare,actually hey theres an idea have all your drums snared,but have a snare throw off on all of them so you could play them regularly or snared.man let a real pro get their hands on that technology and id bet solos would take an interesting turn.

Ther drummer for the Kentucky Head Hunters "Fred" has an all snare set. He has 2 regular Kicks, but his snare is an old marching snare, and his 3 toms are old marching snares with the snare wires removed.

The closest thing I can think of would be hip hop drummers that have two snares, a bass drum and no toms. The one I've seen with my own eyes do this is Soulive's drummer Alan Evans.

Big question....why haven't people done this before? This sounds like something someone else would have done before, ya know? I think this should become a Drummer World community project, everyone works on developing their own set (or each person work on a indivual tom or other drum) and we'll sell it, and be billionaries! ha...well it was a dream.

Hahaha one can dream eh. Im not sure how well it would sell to be honoust. But i wouldnt mind trying it.

You could always track down old 13"-16" marching snares and use them as floor toms. The only problem is that when you flip the snares on, they wouldn't sound good unless you crank them up, which then isn't a very desireable tom sound. If you use regular toms and convert them it wouldn't be as simple as adding a little hardware, you'd have to carve snare beds to get an authentic sound. I've thought about this too. In fact, I own a few marching snares I was going to make into floor toms, but then I decided to abandon their wood shells for steel ones.

I am thinking this might sound as good as my old upright piano, that I had where I put a metal thumbtack in each of the felt hammers so that there was some metal to metal sound on the piano strings. It didnt sound good. Sorry.

we should make a "strange kit ideas" thread for this stuff. along with snare set i've thought of things like a set of tenors or timpani for toms, etc

hey.. ive been thinkig about a simple kit without those toms and cymbals (check out "Small Kit" thread for more).. and now you all with this idea.. i like interesting kits, becouse the make your drumming sound interesting too.. so you should try.. oh.. and i think you should tune bass to not so low frequencys, to make it sound proper, becouse bass should also sound like a part of the kit..

I think the best setup would be a small side snare for high tom, a 13" snare for mid tom, a deep 14" for floor tom, and a marching snare in the regular marching snare position. I dunno about bass, I guess just a regular one, plus snares. Or it might sound better as a whole with a normal bass.
The nice thing is you can turn off the snares and have a normalish kit (or a completely normal one if you did what some suggested and just added snares to regular toms).

Hawk had the answer here. Electronics or triggers would be the way to go. But an all acoustic thing would be interesting too. Though financially prohibitive and limiting in use.

The thing is those electronic drums or drums with triggers would look the same, only the sound would be different.. no excitment:DDD
