Hello friends!
Well, as I said in a few posts or in my Tama intro video: I`ll record professionally with mics etc. and I`ve finished one of many following recordings today! I hope you like it, just signed up at purevolume.com so it should be easy to listen to it.
the tune I recorded today was a nice bright swing...I played with a play-along there and I played on my Tama Superstar.
I hope you can enjoy...more coming soon. so, comments are very appreciated! :-)

Karl, that was outstanding. You have a lovely feel, particularly on the ride cymbal and your comping patterns and dynamic control are admirable and well appreciated. I am genuinely impressed and it's not often that I am this impressed with any member's playing, let alone someone in your age category. Your swing feel is easy, yet pacy and pleasant to listen to. Really Karl, go out and find a good local jazz band and get more recordings up like this. I'd buy the album for certain.

I think Duncan has pretty much summed up what I was going too say!
I cannot confess to listening to jazz that often but I can tell you have an amazing feel for it.
Karl, you have an awesome talent. Nuture it and develop it and you will be listed on this very site one day!

Karl,
Hey that was great!! I liked your comping, very well placed and not too much.
I thought you rushed the tempo in some places but overall very well done. Don't be afraid to break up the ride pattern also: (ding ding a ding, ding dinga dinga ding).
Great Job!!!!

I agree with Muckster, a bar or two of just 'dings' works really well in pieces like this I think - but that's not detracting from your great playing though.
When I opened the page, I was searching for your song, because the one that started playing, I thought was just someone elses playing, i.e a professional band/drummer...then I realised it was you! Great job, looking forward to hearing more from you in the future.

Wow great stuff Karl!
It has been one of the most solid and tasteful jazz drumming ive heard in a while.
Keep it up, for real.
The only thing I didnt enjoy was the Tom sound though. ( I wasn't completely turned off by it , just wasn't my sound)

You have talent, no doubt about that! I loved your feel, rythm, and sound. Very jazzy man. I can't wait to hear more from you, always looking forward to it man, especially the file I sent you. As Duncan said, if you had an album out, I'd be the first to pick up a copy. You're an amazing musician.

Drummer Karl

oh yeah, so many replies already! Great!
so, a few questions I`ll answer now:
Rudimental Drummer: I recorded the drums in my normal drumroom (no dampening etc.) with 7 mics (1 bass, 1 snare, 3 toms, 2 overheads/condensers). After I recorded it Daniel (great music-technique guy) mixed it with the music, he did this with a program called "Cubase"...at the first look everything looks pretty unprofessional but if you look two and more times on our recording stuff, it is actually very professional.
Somedrummer: I`m 15. birthday: 02-21-1991
Hardcore Logo: I don`t know if it`s a play-along from Steve Houghton, I got it from www.music4drums.net , downloaded it and deleted the drums with WaveLab...
overall thanks alot for the comments here!!!! :-)
PS: We will also keep up improving the drumsound...

Wow. I don't know much about jazz, but I am intrugued. For a 15 year old, I agree with everyone else. That was amazing. I hope you nurture your skills because it's people like you who deserve to be respected drummers. It sounded brilliant, and I really loved the feel you have. You felt at one with the music. Just keep going, you might get the chance to show more and more people your talent. That is so important.

That was terrific, Karl. Well done.
The only suggestion I can give you would to be to break up the ride pattern a little bit but other than that, it was tremendous. You let the soloist respire when combined with your playing which was awesome.
I really liked your drumset-sound.
The chorus was very captivating with the saxaphone as well.
I really dig this tune by the way.

Ah Karl, your playing is fantastic ... there's no way I would guess that the drummer on the recording was your age without knowing beforehand ... you've got gobs of musical maturity. Your comping was great, and so was your feel ... I definitely think that you could be going far as a jazz drummer. There was one section in there where you weren't locked into the piece ... but I'm sure you've noticed that. Tremendous job Karl

Hey Aahz...damn, that is nice of you! I think a statement like "you`ve got musical maturity" is one of the nicest (with big respect to the other compliments)!
thanks buddy...thanks alot for that!
It could be that there was one part wich didn`t fit or so but when I play it`s the thing that I just feel where to do what comping. I just listened to the playing one time or two times max. and so it was everything improvised. Just felt it...
anyway, thanks alot for youropinion! :-)
PS: Next week I can record more! =) ...so, more comments on that??

well Karl, i was always jealous about the amount of feedback you get... and i'm still jealous :P. but hey, you know what? you got the SWING goin'! and it's not that kind of swing you can be taught, it's something that's in you. not many can play like this.
i love this tune, cause it just flows, it's smooth, unpretentious, groovy jazz, the one that's the most precious one (in my humble opinion) :). keep it up man, have fun! i hope to play a drum battle with ya one day! ;)

yes...it will be hard to improve that...that is actually my style wich I developed till now...Elvin Jones influenced me so much...but yeah, will try to improve that but it will be difficult when the emotions and the feeling is with me while playing.
but okay, you heard mostly those loud "hits" on the snare drum but actually I also play very much of the comping very soft...as I told KCDrummer and JazzGregg: Actually the mixer causes that you just hear the loud hits and not the soft comping I also play. The mixer is from my friend (he is much older) and he plays more Pop etc. and is often on the stage, so he also made such a Poppy setting for the drums, especially the snare drum. ...okay, sounds more like an excuse now but its the truth...will improve the sound and...mhhh, style...mhh, but first the sound, because I find my style pretty okay...
PS: thanks alot for any advice!!! =) any more comments or advice?

i understand the mixer situation .... i know what you talking about . but again , the bottom line is that you feel and play jazz great . we all get emotions while we play... and that's how musician's should create , if it's feel less is nothing .

Dude, you got that track nailed. Not rushed in my opinion, the band just didn't keep up with you (although no offence to them, they are stuck on a CD).
Only other thing I would point out is that the A sections of the head are in quite obvious 2 feel, you played 4 time in these. For a gear change, I would really make a point of that feel. Otherwise, it's feeling good. Man, I heard your old stuff from a few years ago, and frankly, I wasn't so impressed, but this is cool. Just go out and play and get off the bloody interweb!

Herr Karl,
That is a really great job!
You sure have a lot of nice stuff for a 15 year old...I have some Shure mics and a Behringer mixer picked out so that I will be able to make recordings in my drumroom.
And here is something else: I just didn't expect that I'd be listening to a 15-year old in Europe play jazz. Everyone I know that listens to jazz is 35 or over. It's cool to see that young people are keeping jazz alive, and especially outside the USA.
Jazz, IMO is a sophisticated taste.

A 2 feel in jazz is where the bass player plays on beat 1 and 3 instead of all four beats. The drums change accordingly, but it's much more a feel/accentation thing than something definable. Listen to a classic tune like Doxy (Sonny) or Good Bait (Trane) for examples of this. It's probably the whole head that's in the two feel now I listen to it. Basically, like Doxy, follow the bass player, so you're playing with his lines, espcially when he plays the hits (at 0:15, - ba baah ba, that dotted thing). That way when it opens up to the sax solo after the head, the feel will change.

Very nice heard my man and thanks for the advice!!! :-) ...but what could you play with a 2 time feel? such a bluesy half time groove??

thanks buddy...I like this German word you use in the beginning! ;-)
but seriously: Many people say to me that it is kinda unusual that someone in my age is so interessted in Jazz music.
...and also I asked this to myself: Why? and I noticed that I just have to do it and to live it...I don`t know the reason why I (my character, my brain) likes the melodies, the rythms. I don`t wanna be "cheesy" but I think it`s because of such a maturity...I think, I hope.

well...I don`t take it as offence.
just a question: What music styles do you mainly play/listen to? It is your point of view that you didn`t find this interessting or "special"...and actually this was one of many goals for me: Don`t play as much as you can, it`s NOT a solo. I played with a band together...also NOT to play so hard, it should fit to the music.
haha, also: my solo...oh damn, I should be arressted for it (and this is really what I think). It wasn`t as jazzy as now and I made biiig progress with feeling, technique, comping etc.
overall I`m no chops-man with a huge talent for "entertainment soling", like Elvin for example, too.

thanks alot mate...wow, and this snare drum gets cool feedback! :-) It`s my "normal" Tama Superstar Custom 14x5.5"...sounds cool and is very versatile!
so, yeah, I wrote PMs to many persons (sorry for that, just wanted to mention)...
the first NEW tune is called "Relaxin` at night", a more abstract light tune with a chilled contra bass solo in it.
the second one is from my new "album" called "Rockolate", the song is called "route to classic rock"...I hope you like both songs!
PS: I know, my timing isn`t perfect...I was pretty exited when I recorded... ;-)
so, enjoy, comments are very appreciated!

Hey Karl, great set of recordings, a very professional sound. Your jazz tone is very authentic, too. Yeah, there were some timing issues here and there, just keep practicing with a click! The next step should be to increase your comping repertoire - no time like the present to pick up a copy of Art of Bop Drumming by John Riley;)
Good stuff.

thanks guys, really nice of you all!!!
I`ll try to record more next week or so...also the play-alongs jonescrusher sent me.
Overall I`m pretty happy with it...but I`m pretty worried sometimes about the timing. :-(
about the comping: SOmething wonderful happened today: My drum teacher gave me the Jack DeJohnette comping-coordination school. What a nice book!
and a good drummer friend of mine (he goes to university now) found my stuff cool and he wanted to give address to some nice Jazz guys he played with before studying time. Yipieeee! this could mean that I join MAYBE a very good jazz combo soon...this would be so nice!
just this one thing: TIMING. oh dear, I`m worried, yes. I often like to play faster than the track...and the thing which totures me so much about it: Actually my timing isn`t that bad...I`m just menthaly too weak when recording.
but however, I notice it and I work on it...
PS: How do you find the brush work? I got my brushes a few weeks ago and I love the feeling with them...it makes fun! :-)

Damn you have a nice touch, especially on that ride cymbal. You really bring out an excellent tone from your entire kit. Ironically on the rock song (a tribute to Rush perhaps... heh) you're a little light on your touch. Hitting the bass drum harder would have helped propel it a little more, but that said, in your jazz playing, a light touch is exactly what you need on the bass drum. Yeah there were very slight timing issues, but they can be sorted out easily, ultimately you have a great touch and a lovely tone from your entire kit.

For this Rock song: yes, the drums don`t fit into the rock sheme perfectly we also didn`t change anything on the settings...and I played the bass drum a bit too light, you are right. hehe, I think Jazz is just my blood. :-)

Hey, thanks so much everybody for these nice comments!!
I`m happy that you enjoy and everything...and I`ll try to record more during the next weeks, we`ll see.
Rudimental Drummer: Thanks again...about the swing pattern:
The Swing pattern is as you know this 1-2de3-4de-1-2de3...etc. the simple thing I`ve done: I just worked hard on it. I think when you know how to play and what notes do you play it is just a thing of practicing. First I wanted to play this pricipal pattern just like a "chinese with his eating sticks": I just used the rebound...you know? I also played the grip in the "normal" position, so this american grip (I hope it`s the right word), this meant even more volume.
After practicing the ride pattern alot I got used to that "timpani" style on the ride cymbal, it`s very difficult in the beginning, no doubt, but I played more and more in this postion (also when playing normal grooves) and after time I got used to that.
To focus more on that timpani: There are many ways to do that grip (also called "french grip"...?). My drum teacher wanted me to play it in the most extreme way, so that I hold the stick EXTREMLY open. I noticed that THIS version is just too extreme and also pretty rare, the most Jazz drummers play just the normal french grip. I had to learn much with my fingers to get such a swing. <---- that is the next point.
It`s of course better to play/support the stick with finger work. It is very important to do that and NOT to use just the rebound (what would you make when playing at Tempo 40?! :-D)
So, overall there are many techniques (maybe watch some of Derrick`s vids with Moeller etc) and it`s a thing of relaxing...and this is thew next thing I wanna mention: Relaxing, feeling.
When playing Jazz you play relaxed, you feel the music, the pulse and you just do it. After you analysed your own technique (with a mirror, or on the practice pad e.g.) you just do it when playing. Your arm should be relaxed, your fingers, too, everything...not cramped!! This motion you make on the Ride cymbal is also whipping, a wave motion, looks relaxing. That is why I totally agree with Jack`s (and many Jazz drummer`s) statement that playing on the kit is like dancing.
so, just work on it...I`ll keep up working hard also... :-)
good luck and any more comments?

Great stuff Karl, really enjoyable to listen to. I was surprised at how much better you are at jazz and swing than rock. With so many drummers it's the opposite. Do you find that the more complex patterns allow you to concentrate more on keeping an even tempo? Or maybe because you're not thinking as much about tempo and more about the patterns that it comes more naturally?

thanks very much Dog! Yeah, I think I`m a better Jazz drummer, really. and even a better Funk drummer than Rock. but I hope it was still enjoyable, this Classic Rock tune.
With Jazz it`s a pretty strange thing: I feel it. Also Rock etc. but not as intesivly as Jazz. When being on stage with Jazz I forget all those technical things and just DO IT.
But it is not JUST Jazz...I also love Funk and even Rock...but I think NOTHING will beat Jazz.
Enough said, now you all are the very next...

In ca. 2 hours I`ll just go to a little Jazz session to a near town.
I`ll go with a good drummer friend of mine who actually studies on university but for that gig he comes home again. After the gig (after 1 hour) everybody can go on stage and test, play...just jam...
...So, I hope I get the chance to jam with some other musicians.

Well, what can I say that hasn't already been said? Really good playing...very professional sounding. Nice brush work. I've never been a very strong jazz player, but I can hear that you do it well. I agree with what someone said before, you sound better on the jazz tracks than on the rock track. I guess that's because jazz is where your heart is?

Yeah, my heart is really with Jazz. I also like to play Rock (as I said before) but damn, Jazz is in the center of my heart, hands. Yes, I love it.
I could also notice that when I was at the Jazz club (here is the report: http://www.drummerworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20298 ). I felt the music, through the whole context...also Stefan (drummer, friend) said something to me after me playing a few tunes with the band: "YOU WERE BURNING MAN!"
just love it...
PS: More advice or comments are very appreciated! =)

haha i guess im just not a jazzy sorta guy, i like jazz, just into harder stuff. well dont but, wish i could get in the studio.
well...that is your point of view and I truly RESPECT that. I think some drummers just don`t like my style etc. it is not their choice, of course...and I respect that. It is not bad to say that you didn`t liked it...your opinion, it is cool.
So, what do you think, more thoughts?? :-)

Sounds great, i cant get over how great your drums sound.
One tid-bit to add....
try doing soe 5, 7, and 9 stroke rolls when transitioning sections. Some people overuse it but i think it would add some more fluidity to your already great playing.
Congratulations on being one of the best young drummers around here!

Hello Karl,
I shan't bother repeating all the positive comments others have made and I agree with. Suffice to say, you're very good and a million miles ahead of where I was at your age. The one suggestion I have is that you could aim for more consistency in your ride pattern: for the most part it is extremely closed, i.e. dotted 8'ths and 16th, but sometimes it wanders into a more open, triplet feel, within the space of a few bars. Great jazz drummers are identifiable by how they swing on the ride - I think you need to decide what your ride feel is and stick to it! Apart from that, great playing, and lovely drum sound.

Well yeah...so much nice advice and ideas. Damn yeah!! :-) thanks so much for everything.
and also what I can say: I`ll record some of the songs new on the next weekend. I think in the last (two) weeks I made so much progress, because of your advice, because I practiced, because of the hard critic of my drum teacher. I`m happy that you guys and also my drum teacher praise me into sky. You also give critizm and this makes me motivated. It`s so nice to see how many ideas I could execute in just one or two weeks, I tried to get more sounds from my cymbal, snare work improved also...I`ll record new so yeah, you`ll see, I`ll kep you updated!
thanks guys. keep up commenting! =)

Hey Karl! great stuff! You really get that layback sound I like with jazz.. The tone control on the ride pattern is amazing stuff karl..
And about the brush song natural business, great brushwork! Such a super swing feel with the brushes... You are one of a kind.

Karl, your playing is remarkable and well implemented with each recording.
Bright Swing Times was exceptionally good. Your fills are satisfying and really complement the music.
Relaxin' At Night was brilliant and you have a good ear for this song. It fit the music really well.
Looking forward to hearing some more tunes.

Thanks everybody!!
Especially thanks for the compliment on "Relxin' at night". I recorded it recently and I think you can notice differences in my style between "Bright Swing Times" and "relaxin at night".
In these few weeks I think I learned so damn much through new books, the internet, my teacher, and through you! Great to see my own progress...and I think it`s much progress I made in a few weeks! I try to use all the tips...it`s fun and hard. Great. :-)
BUT NOW SOME GREAT NEWS:
Soon I`ll have a second PC in my studio and so then I can record anything on any time!! Till now I need Daniel who makes all the mixing work on his laptop...but soon I can do it by myself ANY TIME! :-)
So I`ll record more and more...for practice, routine, and most important: just to feel the music and have fun guys.
good night...see you! =)

Well, I would make a CD IF it was my band I am playing with.
I`ll get an own second PC soon so I can record anytime as I said...I`ll record tunes also from "Turn it up & lay it down". The Jazz play-alongs are awesome...thanks alot Bernhard!!
So, I`ll replace also old tunes like "Bright Swing Times with new tunes from that CD. My skills on "Bright Swing Times" aren`t as good as they are now....just made a great progress in the last weeks.
so, again: thanks alot for all the nice comments!

Hey friends!
Just sat in my studio the whole day today...Wanted to get more knowledge with Cubase. haha, from the 8 hours of sitting in my studio, I sat more than the half of the time in front of my PC.
Tried many things in Cubase...and i love this programme!!!
However, just decided to record the first song of the "Turn it up & lay it down" CD. The song is called "Let`s play one" and it is a very calm and slow jazz ballad. Hope you like it...
also here are a few pics of my new PC in my room...here we go =)
