well, the thing is the following: Soon my drum teacher will get a 22" Paiste 2002 Medium Ride...and I`m really happy for him! (hahaha, and this Ride just hung in a youth club!! :D)
BUT if he wanna get this Ride he has to swap it with another...and his swap item would be his 20" Avedis (around 30-40 years old)...wich I just have it on my kit now and it`s also pretty good but in a few weeks I have to give this baby back... :-( ...so I will just have one jazzy ride cymbal then.
Overall I have to say that god manipulated this situation: I mean, I always thought about a nice sizzle ride on crash position and now I could have a good chance to get one of those! (Maybe for christmas from my father?) I`m just still thinking about some...

here is what I thought:

19" A Zildjian Armand (3 rivets) <---- already checked out
20" A Custom Sizzle Ride <----------- already checked out

20" K Custom Flat Top Ride (makes also a sizzling sound) <------ not checked yet

THESE ARE NICE BUT JUST DISCOVERED MY FAVOURITE SOME DAYS AGO:

21" Istanbul Mel Lewis Ride (2 Rivets) <----- such a great sound, I am sure that this will be my next cymbal

so, what do you think would be the nicest? What is your opinion? and also: What sizzling rides do YOU like?

Karl

I'd have to suggest the 19 inch Armand Signature ride. To me, it has the perfect jazz sound, I think it would be the best for you, Karl.

yes, I think it`s the nicest one...
...and yesterday I found an aweome deal on ebay...damn, 1 Avedis Armand 19" and 1 10" A Custom splash inclusive!!!!! Unbelievable, the price is on 150$ now...(119€)

Incredible deal...BUT I can`t finance it :,-( so bad...

Hi...I have an A custom sizzle ride 20" and I am very happy with it! I has a great sizzle to it and has good stick definition. I use it as a left side ride with a k custom dry complex ride as my main ride. It is a great mix. I know you have the k custom dry light ride and i think you would like this as another addition to you set! Good Luck!

People like those K Custom Left Side rides.. Peter Erskine signatures there. There's a 20 and 22" version. They are dry, medium rides with rivets...
I think the Bosphorus Hammer 22" ride with rivets is the best sounding one out there. The Istanbul Mel Lewis models are very similar though. I'm interested in those Armand rides since no one ever mentions them anywhere...

Either the Mel Lewis or the Peter Erskine signature rides would probably work well for you.
I was actually going to buy a Peter Erskine sig. Left Side Ride, but I opted for a new set of Bosph. hats. Still waiting on those to arrive, though. :/

Nah the Mel Lewis is the only option here. Havent you already got a left side ride Karl?

I have the 19in Armand Sizzle ride and love it. It is not my main ride for sure, but it sounds so good and I find myself using it more and more. Has a great crash sound to.

No, I got already a 22" K Custom Dry Light Ride...so the Mel Lewis 21" model would fit so well in my opinion. Every time I love it more! Right now this is my next cymbal! =)

...but what is your opinion?

Yes. I talked to my father yesterday about that baby, he is also a musician and understands my problem. After giving away the 40 years old Avedis I would have to "work" with my K Custom and maybe with my AAX as the left Ride but the option with the AAX is horrible.

Unfortunatly also his money is short (he has to support a family with three children and a wife). :-( He is sorry for me and would definitly like to support me with that. I can understand that he can`t do it at the moment though. Tomorrow I`ll ask my parents for borrow me money for it because it is (for the next time) the last needed cymbal in my set-up.

I mean, to earn money with making music in Jazz clubs or so I have to work with good tools. But the tools (cymbals etc.) are expenicive so I just need a bit financial help from parents to get the needed tools. I`m just not in the age where I could earn my money with bigger jobs like being teacher for the "state music school". and with teaching localy or privatly for 20 bucks the month I just can`t buy things like cymbals for 300 bucks. (To see teaching just from the financial side now). It is kind of a "devil circle", if you know what I mean.

...and it is such a great cymbal!!! Maybe when my math and English test are a B I get some money from my parents...

Hey Karl, have you ever thought about earning money with a non-drumming job, like delivering newspapers? I know it's always a matter of time and nerves, but there are some jobs that will get you loads of money. I work for a small electronics company whenever I have time to since August of last year. So far I have earned enough money to buy a couple of cymbals, actually I spent the money on my laptop, but that's a matter of priorities.

In my summer holidays I saw a jazz drummer using a sizzling cymbal as a crash and I really loved that sound. Suited the music marvelously.

Oh, und Teufelskreis heißt auf Englisch "vicious circle".

Well, delievering newspapers is one of many popular jobs for teenagers. Another is standing in a big tent and sell the people beer while a band is playing. but as I said, with those jobs you can never earn enough money to buy those cymbals or gear in general. I mean, you live in Frankfurt and you work in a electronics company.
I live in Bad Sooden-Allendorf, a small town in the north of Hessen and we just don`t have many possibilities here, not more than sell beer and deliever newspapers. We have no big jobs here. To earn money with music is the other possibility which is a good one. But even with those gigs you can`t earn enough, maybe in a year.

Let`s talk in two years again, then it will look different of course but for now I can`t afford that. And I made the newspaper job a few times, it was in winter, I almost lost my hands.

thanks for your stuff anyway!

Well its obvious what you must do now...Chuck on your black stuff and rob a bank! You need that ride.

LOOL...well, I have to say that here are two banks in our town...and one of it is so unsafe that it was robbed about 5 times already. But that is pure off-topic..back to topic:

I talked with my (real) father again and he will consider this deal again. So maybe...maybe I`ll get it. Maybe.
I mean, it would be the LAST cymbal for a complete set-up without borrowed ones (Avedis is borrowed). If I get this I will really never ask him again.

My father told me to e-mail the guy from cymbalsonly, overall (so incl. shipping) it is 377.20 bucks. Good price for it, or?
He will hold it for me and my father will decide...oh dear, please wish me luck...haha.

The last cymbal, an awesome one.

So rob the other one! <der> . Haha but really, 5 times! What the hell?

Well i personally dont like to buy cymbals unless i can personally play it, but thats just me, if your fine with that then go for it. Is that 377 Euro brand new, or 377 US and its used? Because brand new it probably would be around 350 euro. Although is cymbalsonly just used? So if its new and its 377 euro id say thats about the RRP so you could get it down a bit more, but if you mean 377US and its used, depending on its condition id say thats a pretty good price. (Im trying to do all this in AUD in my head.lol) I think 377US is like 450AUD which is a good price.

Drummer Karl
01-20-2007, 01:50 AM
Well, I also tell so many people here who wanna buy cymbals to try them before buying them (that is embarressing...I know ~~) but...no popular German shop has got Istanbul cymbals, that is crazy! Couldn`t find anything. And I heard them, of course it is not the same but it wouldn`t be so sure if I didn`t fell in love with actually sound clips. :-D Seriously, I`m so sure I´ll do nothing wrong with that decision...
Also Tony (the guy from cymbalsonly) e-mailed me that a second person is interessted in the same cymbal! Now I have to react quickly. Now it is up to my loved father.

PS: Yeah, as far as I know they are new. And if not, it would be even nicer! I love used hand-hammered cymbals, it was the same with my K Custom.
It is 377$ (incl. 38$ shipping), so exept the shipping it would be just 261€, great deal in my opinion.

Well if they are new and in US$ thats great. 261Euro for it new is amazing, (thats why i think that it is actually used, that just doesnt seem right otherwise)

So not even Musik Productiv stock Istanbul? Thats not too good. But doesnt matter it will be a great cymbal in person anyway. Is it only sound smaples off the net that youve heard?

mhhh, let`s consider...I already heard Istanbul Agops...and I think also Mel Lewis Rides live but I`m not sure.

and nope, MP doesn`t have any Istanbuls. :-D That is of course not very good. At the moment I`m just hoping...I think I go sleeping now...hahaha...

see you,

I live in Iceland and Im 17 years old, I work in a store that sells office supplies, I attend high-school and work 4-6 days a month (every other weekend) and i get about 570$ per month. During the summer when Im not attending school I get around 2570$ per month.

Just get a job at a local store or something and soon you will have enough money to buy what ever you want =)

What was your opinion on the Armand Ride? I had a K Flat Top and it was rather thick and high pitched; it had rivets as well. You may want to check out a Sweet Ride. The one cymbal that had rivets it that I loved was my Sabian Jojo Mayer Fierce Ride with 3 Rivets in it. It had a complex, fascinating sound! I do have an A Zildjian Medium Ride (20") with three rivets in it and every drummer wants to buy it from me, for whatever that's worth.

thanks for the advice! I really have to look on the Fierce Ride a bit more.

However, I`ll get the Mel Lewis this week. My last cymbal for now (money is short ;-) ).
I`m really looking forward to seeing and playing it.

I personally found the Armand Ride too "brilliant" sounding, for me it didn`t have an own character. Too definated, brilliant. I wanted to have a cymbal with rivets (or at least which is sounds sparkling and sizzling), I wanted a cymbal which sound very washy, with trashy qualities, fairly thin, and with a more vintage sound.

So I found the Mel Lewis. I`ll hear more when my father has some time to stop by and give it to me.
