How much did it cost?
Besides that, how much can I buy it for?
Beautiful drum, man. Really. Really beautiful.

Total cost for all the parts was around $350. The shell was $150 and the 8 tube lugs were just under $100. Hoops, strainer, butt plate, heads, air vent, tension rods, shipping costs......$100.
Some might consider this drum expensive at $350, but when you consider the cost of a Craviotto snare drum......

Nice. Similar look to what I want to do when I build my own. Did you use a laquor for the clear coat?

$350 is a *steal* for a custom snare drum of such high quality parts. There aren't many other snares in existance that are made of cherry. Mapex has a model (deep forest) but it's $389, and doesn't have that calibre of parts. The Mapex is a nice sounding snare, on the dry and mellow side, but a super jazz snare.
There are a lot of name brand snares out there in the $400-$450 range that don't offer high quality throwoffs, lugs or snares.
$350 is a superb price for what would likely be $600-$800 if commercially produced. To top that, there can't be many (if any) cherry snares that are just like it. You won't have any of that "me too" feeling. And that's worth it.

I have one of those Mapex Deep Forest cherry drums and it's great. But I wanted a solid shell cherry without spending Craviotto $$$. I figured this was the next best thing, right? And I did get lucky- it's a beautiful shell.
Thanks for all the kind comments, guys.

Craviatto has another one of those "mythic" statuses. A little searching, and I have found more than a few instances of flawed shells. So, he has nice stuff---but he isn't perfect. Any doubts? Check out drum, and MD magazines review of Craviatto stuff. They have a definate indication of some flaws that should not be there---especially on a kilobuck snare.

That looks pretty amazing. Ill be getting a segment shell from RhythmKing shells, and I was considering cherry. I want a deep pop, similiar to the snares in the songs Acid Rain by Dream Theater and Sporadic Movement by CKY. Would cherry be a good wood to use for this sound?

I own two Craviotto solid shell snare drums- a 6.5X14 DW maple and a 5.5x14 Timeless Timber birch. Speaking from personal experience, these two drums are physically flawless, and sonically stunning!
But you're right- a grand is a LOT for a snare drum. Hence, the home-build.
Though I would like to have Craviotto limited edition black cherry and walnut snare drums in 6.5X14. There's just something about those diamond-base tube lugs......

So you bought the shell already steam-bent into shape and now you're going to finish it? What a neat project!

Very nice. I put up a picture of the cherry shell I've got laying around... I'll be finishing it up in the next week. Think I may go a bit more reddish with mine and might do brass.. we'll see.

any reason, other than price, that made you choose eight lugs, not ten?
bilkay

Two reasons:
1) I think 8 lug snares tune just fine.
2) I wanted to show-off that beautiful shell!

What kind of throw did you use? It looks kinda.. dwarfed.
Other than that.. the snare is simply stunning, and the reinforcement hoops were a great idea.

It's a big drum.
Stealth throw.
Looks good. I always like seeing people build their own (or assemble, as some prefer).
