Because the chicks dig it!
Bonham! I love his minimalist approach. Sure, he had a gong and tympanis, but a rather spartan kit, even when he could have anything his heart desired. And that sound.... man, that is what it's all about.

i wanted to play with my bro in a band, and he needed a drummer. i heard theyr hard to find, so it sounded like it might be worth a try. i had started off with just a snare drum. i'd also been having piano lessons for 5 years and needed change!

I was probably 9 years old at the time and we had just moved to a new neighborhood. There were two guys, one next door and the other 4 houses down and they both played drums. The one guy played in clubs. I thought these guys were really cool and I had always loved music and that`s what got me interested. I got my first sanre drum when I was 10 and my first kit on my 11th birthday.

I started out playing guitar and i still do . Then me and my friend wanted to start a band but either of us knew how to play or even had a set . Then my favorite uncle brown came through .After hearing from my mom how much i wanted to play drums i came home from school one day and found a nine piece double bass kit with roto toms in my garage . my heart just about dropped . thats the kit i learned on when i was 12 . Been through an outragous amount of kits , many stolen and many sold . Now im stuck with a full on junk beater set , plan on buying a new one in a couple months.

I remember when I was about ten and music was everywhere and I was just bombarded by it. Family friends would give me homemade tapes of KISS, Head East, Foreigner and even the Bee Gees. When I rode the bus home, the driver would turn on the radio, and Firefall's "Lady" might be on. I remember being home from school, sick, and hearing the radio with Heart's "Straight on For you" on the radio. I also remeber the Steve Miller Band's release of "The Book of Dreams". The there was the older kid down the street who wore a derby hat just like John Bonham, playing his drums out in his front yard one day. The choir director at church had his own rock band. There was always music around, so it may have just been a natural progression.
Okay, this is what made me want to play the drums. So what was it for you?

They started teaching drums in our local music school and I had to pick an extra instrument to study = the easiest choice in the world. Haha, I was 14 or 15 then, playing drums seemed cool. I didnt really listen to a lot of music when I was a kid, but somehow I got into the business anyway.

(this thread already exists) but I just wanted to say those are some cool beginning influences. For me it was luck. I played violin for several years then decided I wanted to try bass guitar. I sucked immensely at bass so the band director asked me to "try" drums, and I was just naturally kind of good at it.

I don't know. I can't remember ever not wanting to play the drums.
The earliest memory I have is sitting in my kitchen playing on pots and pans. I remember that happening even before I saw Animal for the first time.... After that, I was hooked for life.

I think there is a un-avoidable desire to play drums. Horn players in the school band tend to make fun of percussionist but really they know they want "touch" the snare. One can see the desire in their eyes. The fact that an indivuadle can play a powerfull message that moves people inspires one to become a percussionist but after realizing it's hard work to be up to the standards of whom they saw play, one might easily give up and just dream. Then there is us who worked for the dream and made it a reality....
so with that drums are effin sweet I mean common, honestly can a trumpet play dark and evil solo that just flat out rocks and have nearly the loudness of the drums? Percussion has to most range when it comes to dynamics.
That is true the rest of the band owes each percussionist a dollar per finger,
I was influenced by my sister taking me to local converts and she interduced me to her "boyfriend" He played drems, he let me play the drum set when i was 12. that is where my drumming carier started, but it all started in fourth gradde and getting my first pair of sticks and pad.

Basically - i'd always wanted to play drums, i lvoed the vibe and essence of seeing a live drummer, in the musicals that my dad put together. The live raw sound that they had, and the musicality of them holding the song together. Captivated me.
Then, fate. A few of my mates expressed interest in forming a jazz band. I had no musical experience, but form music clas si had learnt that i picked up most instruments pretty quickly. So i readily said 'Yeh! Ill Be Drummer!"
Quickly forgetting i did not have a drum kit, or any grasp on how to play.
Three years on, i have 2 drum kits, play in two live bands and record for another, and love every part of my music! Lucky i had such a caring and respectful group of musicians to foster my musical interest, anyone else wouldve fobbed me off as a time waster, etc. But through lots of practice, and a lot of perseverance (i still havent had any lessons, looking at getting a few for the jazz side of my drumming) i have the drums downpat, but with so much mroe to learn!

I took music class for the first time in grade 9, and the program was focused on big band jazz. no matter what setup - ensemble, quartet, or full-blown stage band, there was only one drummer, so you stood out and could always be heard.
i could never afford drums at home, so the incentive was to start on the old pearl exports at the school and get good enough to move across the room (it was a really nice double stage area - classroom setup) to the senior band and play on the pro series. we used to spent lunch hours, spares and hours after school practicing and, while the instructor was taking phone calls for his home business, butchering nirvana, stp, soundgarden and the rest of the grunge. plus you could get relatively far in the program without really having to know anything about music as it related to the rest of the band.

I have a lot of energy and I always loved to hear music with great beats. I used to beat on pots and pans and took interest in the drums. My parents bought me a used kit, slingerland, when I was 6 and I haven't stopped playing since. I took a few lessons and it came naturally to me...it was great to love something and be good at it right off the bat. Well I've played for over 20 years and I still get excited about music.

My reason for playing is the fact that I can. If I didn't then the guy that played the drums before me at my church would be playing them........ and he sucked. It was like he didn't have a clue what a beat was. Anyways, I had played guitar for 12 years. I was in all kinds of bands through out middle, and high school, none of them went anywhere, but I had fun. My drummer at the time was a guy that was like a brother to me. He had an old Rogers kit that his mom had bought for him used. This thing looked like it was brand new though. So when I was 12 I wanted to play drums, but my parents thought that I would have given up on it to easily so I never got a drum set. I got my first guitar when I was 13, then joined my friend in a band.
(Fast forward this part of the story sucks) I find myself at my church, now 24 years of age. It was a sunday night, my friend Shawn is the music director at our church. I wanted to see if I could keep a beat, better than the one the guy before was doing. So I sat down, and started playing. As people were walking out the door, and leaving to go home, they stopped to listen to what I was doing. I had never in my life played the drums, but I was playing them like I had been taking lessons for years. So from that night on, I was the new drummer for my church. I am now 26, and I have only gotten better at playing them. So I play because I can, and thats what God wants me to do with my life....

My music teacher gave me a B (no B's in my house) in music becasue she said i clapped off beat. The next time she saw me (this was in elementary school) i was section leader of percussion at my school.
Also my church has a drum corp and all the cool kids were in it and they were popular so i wanted to be like them. Now I'm the leader of that too.

Music: King Crimson, Yes, Zappa, Rush and Beau Dommage (read further down)
Drummer: Bill Bruford, Terry Bozzio, Neil Peart
Person: My grand father who game me a bongo set when I was 12.
Style: Progressive, Rock, a bit of Jazz (I'm no jazzman .. i like improvisation a lot!)
Inspiration: I started playing "drums" when I first modifid my bongo set by adding some rubber bands to the small bongo to make it sound like snare drum. I used to play a lot of Beau Dommage (a very popular group from Montreal/canada), I was 12 years old at the time. From about 17 to present time, my main inspiration comes from Bill Bruford.

Genetics. Unrecognized genetics. And then: RINGO; the BEATLES. That was what I'd been missing. All the music I heard. It was the rhythm. Childish fascination with cymbals. Here was something I instinctively understood. And it is a part of this wonderful music. I'd heard Bernstein's "West Side Story" soundtrack and all my older sisters pop and rock of the 50's& early 60's and my family's Italian songs & polkas; but when I saw Ringo on the tele...I felt it. The drumset...the Kit...and the Man just looked so darn HAPPY! HAPPY! Happy was something- is something to be prized.

I don't know. I've always liked rhythm. I remember when I was a little kid about 5 I asked for a toy drum for Christmas then that broke so next Christmas I asked for another one. In about sixth grade I checked into playing in my old homeschool bagpipe and drum corp. For some reason it didn't work out so I waited till I was a freshman in high school to start playing and it finally happened. I got a drum kit (I still play it to this day) and ever since then I have been playing.
I also remember when I was nine having some percussion toys around like tamborines and shakers and stuff and one day when I had a few friends over. We were messing around and I remember saying something like "No no no! We need to play the same thing!" and I did one of those "do do do" things but my friends didn't follow along.
Anyways I guess I'm just born a drummer!
PS: I haven't come from a musical background so I don't know how I knew what I said in the 2nd paragraph. I'm still impressed by what I said and that was like 10 or 11 years ago!

I started playing drums for a big reason-- I didn't have much talent in too many things. I mean sure, I was a mean Playstation player, but that was pretty much the only thing I could say I was good at.
On my 14th birthday, my parents bought me a Nirvana DVD. It had a bunch of their starting moments and shows. Seeing Chad Channing and Dave Grohl thrash on their kits, (esspecially Channing with his North kit) gave me goose bumps! I thought, "These guys are nuts" and eventually thought, "That looks a lot funner than guitar."
So, one day at school a friend of mine was trying to play the infamaous "Wipeout." He gets mad and I try it. Bam, first try, nailed it. Of course, we're talking about on a desk with pencils, so it didn't sound good, but you could tell I had it down.
So, I go home and tell my parents I want a drum set. I get a automatic "No!", but soon I became fascinated with the idea of four or five drums and a couple cymbals and making music with them. I looked at drums everyday, whether at musiciansfriend.com or here at this site! I even went to the trouble of replicatiing kits I saw with pillows on my bed, got quite good with songs!
So, last Chrismas, I got my Ludwig Accent, complete with a crash/ride and hi-hat. I soon added three crash cymbals, broke one, studied and read about cymbals and watched a few drumming videos, learned to strike one properly, still have 2 crashes.
And, nearly everyone in my family had heard me play and my parents swear I have an absolute knack at it. I'm even better than a guy my dad knows that's been playing for over 5 years.
I don't think I'll ever quit or forget about drums, or my humble beginnings with pillows. I'll keep on rockin' and learning new things.
Drums have become my thing, my niche. And I'm glad I'm awesome at something that inspirational to life.
i've played Alto saxophon for 4 years but it becomes more and more boring for me... than a friend came and we went to the drumkit in our school... in this moment i knew that drumming is the right.. and so it is.. i love it

My dad was a career jazz drummer and played w/ a lot of big names (Chet Baker, Phil Woods, Sonny Rollins, more...) I was always around the drums...always exposed to music...and it's always been the biggest underlying passion in my life.
I played a lot as a kid but never very seriously...stopped learning young and just picked it up again about a year ago (I'll be 29 in Mar.) I'm makin' up for lost time fast!!! I started lessons w/ a great local guy about 5 mo. ago and I'll have my first DW kit (brand new!) on Thursday!!
I posted these on another thread but here's some cool pics.

Drummer: Carter Beauford, Questlove, Horacio 'El Negro' Hernandez, Gene Lake, Jojo Mayer, Bill Stewart, Tony Allen, Mokhtar Samba, Manu Katche, Zakir Hussain....and Mr Vinnie Colaiuta

Music-Mastodon, Slayer, Zappa, Lou Reed, Lamb of God, Stevie Ray Vaughn (Double Trouble), Fear Factory, Chevelle, Rush, Queen, Zeppelin, The Sword, Black Sabbath, Dimmu Borgir, Children of Bodom, Breaking Benjamin, CCR, Jethro Tull, Bach, Mozart, Wagner, Anything I can get my hands on. I love ALL types of music (save bubblegum pop)
Drummer-Brann Dailor, Phil Collins, Raymond Herrera, Dave Lombardo, Paul Bostaph, Bonzo, Bermuda, Peart, Buddy Rich, Chris Adler... I listen to a lot of drummers and learn what makes them tick. You can't be great with only one influence, you end up sounding just like them and then you're just a carbon copy.
Persons-I've always wanted to, I've just always looked up to drummers. My girlfriend told me to do what I wanted and let nobody stand in my way one day; a week later I had a drum kit.
Style-I love little things in bass drum work that aren't necessarily incredibly fast, but that compliments the music you're trying to play well. I'm big into fills and having a solid groove but interluding it very regularly with a fill.
Inspiration- The drive to get better. I one day want to be a great drummer. I don't need fame or fortune, I just love the instrument and want to be good at it.

Music: the most inspiration has come from bands such as nightwish, dream theatre, lacuna coil, linkin park, nickelback, spineshank and recently rush.
Drummer: when I just started drumming I didn't know a lot of drummers, saw no need to know them either. But afer a while that changed. My favourite drummer at the moment is Keith Carlock, and other than him I like Mike Portnoy, Neal Peart, Virgil Donati and Jeff Porcaro.
Person: my parents and brothers got me into taking drum lessons.
Style: I have a very broad interest, rock in all of its forms (except for stuff like death metal which insults my ears, I prefer music in which I can hear some sort of melody in the vocals), and recently I've gotten interested in playing Jazz. I am working on it, listening to some jazz and trying to learn how they play drums.
Inspirations: Music that gives me goosebumps for being awesome, and sometimes a break or fill that I come up with out of nowhere that rules. I also get a lot of inspiration from watching other drummers. No matter what style they're playing, you always learn something if they're good drummers.

Actually, I didn't want to play the drums that much... I first played the cello and then learned the guitar, the piano, how to sing and eventually, I started jamming on my brother's TD-7! When I formed a band with my long time pals, I first was the lead guitarist but when we started looking for a drummer, my friend called me and said: "Hey, you play the drums, right? I said yeah... and he goes Well... wanna be the drummer?" And I accepted! I ended up entering the percussion program at my high school and becoming the jazz band drummer as well as the lead signer and drummer of that first band for the whole five years it lasted! Now, I'm finishing my college degree in jazz/pop drums!!! But I going into composition and arrangement next year, to better exploit my musical abilities...

I knew I had the abilty to play since I was 9 or 10. Didnt get my 1st kit till age 16. A copy of The Whos Quadrophenia Album was the icing on the cake.

post that time, that event, whatever it was that made you want to play drums.......a concert, meeting a famous drummer?
for me it was at a school talent show way back in grade 7, two drummers tried to out beat each other
ive been playing drums ever since and i can probably out beat the both of them now
great question...i have thought about why i wanted to play drums...only many years later after i became an older adult. for me i decided it's about putting things in order...organization...of tempos, beats and grooves...kinda like making a filing system...striving for perfection. i hope that kinda makes sense(?)

believe it or not, piano came before it all....
because of my dad, just like why i took up golf. good role models can do that to you.
also because drummers always impressed me more than any other musician. when i was 14 most of my buddies had posters of trey anastasio, jimmy hendrix, slash or other crazy guitarists on their walls. mine had jon fishman (phish), carlton barrett (wailers), steve gadd (steely dan) and carter beauford (dmb).
i also had natural internal beat, which explains why i was able to pick up bass as well.

To add to what I said earlier in this thread, When I was 11 I heard a really cool drum solo on the radio. I don't know who it was but it really turned me on. Was it Tommy Aldridge?
When i was a kid i was bouncing off the walls 24-7 and my parents tried everything to calm me down. Boxing, Hockey, Soccer, nothing stuck. So they got me this little kit from a garage sale and put it in our unheated shed (brrrrrrrrr) -20c. I played every day after school for hours and jammed with my best buddy. Everthing inspires me about drums, as soon as i look at a set i am playing them before i even get a chance to sit down.

i can't really remember, but i know that there wasn't any other instrument that i had been introduced to that i wanted to play. and that it was fun back when i started and it still is fun :D Since the end of summer i've played more and more, not really sure why but I think it's because i've started to build up more speed, play more marching stuff, and that i've joined a band w/ a few of my friends. :)
I always loved rock music. But my parents didn't really like it so I never got any drums even though I thought about it when younger. So fast forward a few years, I was sitting in my friend's car, out of the blue he lights up a doob and put on a mix of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Tool. I'm instantly hooked by the sound and feeling of the drums and decided to get a kit, neighbours be damned! :)

With me it just all started when i just had this kind of feeling about this incredible instrument, but i cant describe it. When i saw a drummer i always amagined how magnificant and stress-killing it should be and to just express yourself and play in front of people or just with friends, or alone, ... So i decided to buy myself a really cheap kit 2 years ago, and i've never stopped drumming since, almost every day, i'm hooked :)

At its root it's such a simple instrument and a simple concept, but when you begin to dig in a little deeper, your options become so complex and innumerous that it just sucks you in and doesn't let go. I certainly haven't had my "fill" yet. Haha... :\ Sorry... I had to do it. ;)

Drummer- My dad. He was always into soul music from the 60s and 70s and impressed a lot of that influence on me. John Bonham, Matt Johnson (from the Seattle area - Roadside Monument, Blenderhead), Jesse Sprinkle, William Goldsmith, Clyde Stubblefield, Greg Errico, Don Brewer.
Person- My dad got me started. He played at our church and would let me mess around after he practiced with the band. He started bringing the kit home and I would play along with music on a boom box. I was about 7. I'm 26 now and am as passionate about drumming as ever.
Style- It's tough to say. Music that's a mix of all my drumming influences.
Inspirations- My wife constantly encourages me to keep playing and to continue to learn. Many great bands inspire me, too - Zeppelin, Fugazi, Sunny Day Real Estate, Cursive, Average White Band, Sly and the Family Stone, Motown, James Brown, June of 44, The White Stripes, et cetera...

Music- Sleater Kinney, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Polka Music
Drummer- Janet Weiss, Bruce Cooey, Brian Chase
Person- the above mentioned people made me want to drum
Style- I'm just starting. I want to play in a polka band
Inspirations- I listen to all kinds of music, but over the last year I really started noticing the drums in music. Especially in bands like Sleater Kinney and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It's not just a straight beat the whole way through. The drums in those bands are a very big part of what's going on, just as important as the vocals and guitars.

Music- My musical tastes have always been diverse, but the genres that really got me into drumming were punk rock, hip-hop, and funk. I can remember listening to those styles of music and really focusing on the drums, ingraining them into my memory.
Drummer- I hate to admit it, but when I first started drumming, I listened to Travis Barker, as per my drum teacher's instruction. He felt that even though it was a lot of bashing, Barker had a lot of solid grooves that were easy for a beginner to pick up on, especially circa Boxcar Racer.
Person- My drum teacher really helped me out a lot with drums, and was very encouraging. When I would get frustrated, he eased my mind by breaking down my issues with technique, groove, and coordination. He was able to help me get much more comfortable behind the kit, and I owe the foundation of my drumming to him.
Style- Funk is probably my most favorite style of drumming. More than soloing, comping, or playing it straight, I love to groove, and I think funk music compliments that particular drumming forte.
Inspirations- My biggest inspiration is probably drummerworld. I've come across so many drummers here, both professional and amateur, who inspire me with their own creativity and feel, and fill my head with wonderful new insights into drumming.

Music- ( The music and bands who got you into drums)
I used to listen to The Beatles alot as a kid, my dad loves them, then in 8th grade I discovered The Jimi Hendrix Experience and that led (no pun intended) to Led Zeppelin and Cream and other 60s and 70s bands. My current obsession is Led Zeppelin
Drummer- (The drummer who got you into the drums)
My sister played drums for 6+ years, so her, and then Mitch Mitchell was the first drummer on record that really made me take notice and say, "I want to play drums". Then I discovered John Bonham and said "I want to play drums"
Person- ( A specific person you know who got/helped get you into drums)
My sister
Style- ( The style you enjoy playing most on drums)
Rock, blues, funk, a little jazz
Inspirations- ( Anything that inspired you to play in the first place and keep on playing to the best of your abilities)
Fire- The Jimi Hendrix Experience (Mitch Mitchell), The Lemon Song- Led Zeppelin (John Bonham), any other songs from my heroes, Bonzo, Mitch, Ginger, Moon, Densmore

Well at our school there was a bucket drumming band, and they sounded amazing. So, when i got to gr.7 I joined a bucket drumming class along with a lot of other people (it was very popular). I was good at it so i stuck with it in gr.8 and was one of the best. When i was sending courses in for high school I saw that they had a percussion class and I signed up for it. When I got into the class it wasn't what i expected it to be, for most of the semester we did mallets. Even though I was good at it I didn't really like it much. Close to the end of the year we finally got into drums and I loved it. I took the course the next year but this time the school hired another music teacher (there was only one) and he was amazing at drumming. After seeing him play drums I wanted to become a drummer.

From a musical standpoint I honestly can't remember what it was that turned me on to drums more than another instrument at first whether it was how the drummer looked, the sound or the feel...although those were factors that I loved eventually. I just know that it was something I gravitated to. From a personal standpoint, once I knew that I really wanted to play drums, the goal of showing those people (especially my parents) who thought I couldn't play because of my physical disability that I COULD made me want to play even more, and still does to this day.

I think for me it was when I was quite young and my friend had been playing drums for a while. I used to love going around to this place and we'd just play all day. Eventually I bought that drumkit off him when he got a new one and then when my friends were starting a band I naturally became their drummer. That was the start of it all for me. I had played piano and guitar before that and I must admit I wished I had stuck with the piano longer or just kept it up alongside my drumming. I've been playing for the last two years again but it's just reminded me how much I wish I had kept it up. It's a great skill to have and one I believe can really help you grow as a drummer. Anyway, that was basically it for me.
Has anyone else noticed how many people Zeppelin got started playing? Incredible!

Well for me it was mainly because I got to hit stuff and get away with it.. gets rid of some of the anger.
Anyway my dads has played guitar for ever and that always sort of appealed to me but guitar takes longer to start sounding good when in drums you can just lay down a sick easy beat and sound pro, well not really, but i thought so.

At the age of 1 my parents had already bought me a toy drum kit and the sound it made was one of the few I wasn't scared of and I also used to see my father playing sometimes and so I believe that I started playing drums because I was influenced by it at such a young age.

Music: Country Music (esp 80's-mid 90's), 70's- early 80's Rock.
Drummer(s): Mark Herndon (Alabama), Jimmie Fadden (Nitty Gritty Dirt Band), John Dittrich (Restless Heart)
Person: I was fortunate to come from a pretty musical family all around, so everybody was very supportive in my quest to become the drummer I have.
Style: have pretty well played it all at one time or another (exept punk or hardcore, can't stand it, [no offense]). As of late I have been mainly playing rock/country style with some jazz thrown in as well. have played in jazz bands in the past.
Inspiration: just listening to the music I listen to and watching other drummers perform provides me with the insiration to keep trying new things and never stop trying to learn.

Music: Mother's Finest, Zappa, Missing Persons, Led Zeppelin, The Police, (late 70's early 80's)
Drummer: I would stare at BB Queens drums for hours.Funk rock was the ticket. Then after seeing Bozzio play...that was it! I couldn't imagine any more fun (and still don't).
Person: My soon to be best friend Brad. I had a motorcycle and he had a bass. I would play his bass, he would ride my motorcycle. He's like we should start a band. I was like....yeah!. Both of us had just moved to Georgia and didn't know a soul. It was a perfect situation to start a band that would last 17 years.
Style: Funk rock with a little metal thrown in for good measure (in the early years). Now, it's jazz, fusion and funk. I hate to say it, but how many time can one listen to Moby Dick?
Inspriation: All the other drummers. you can learn something from anyone.

My best friend played guitar and I used to drum on a trash can while he played. I started to realize that I might have a nack for rythym and eventually got a kit so we could start creating music. Rage Against the Machine and Korn were very prominent influences at the time (1999) although I still love Rage.

We were all influenced by greats of the 60's 70's & 80's, but before you saw or heard them play, what attracted you to the drums?
My dad used to play drums when I was like 6, I used to sit in front of the bass drums and watch it vibrate and listen to how awesome that sound was. I loved that. After I was old enough to start playing I was then influenced by John Bonham, Neil Peart, e.t.c.
my dad was my main influence also.I started playing when I could reach the bass drum pedal which is when I was about 4 yrs. old Bonham & Peart are also my Favorites Bonham first Neil second. But I owe a lot too my dad he always made sure I had a kit to play it was always his hand-me-down stuff but I never complained and I always had fun.

ever since i was a kid i always listened to the drum parts in a song more then any other part. something about it drew my to them. but i started racing motocross first, and 2 broken legs, 1 broken foot, 1 broken wrist, 8 broken fingers, 2 broken ribs later, i hung up my racing gear and bought a ludwig kit. that was 19 years ago and ive played ever since. ive learned drums were not only a hobby for me but an obsession in a way.

Music- I had always wanted to play the drums when I was in elementary school, but I was poor as a child and my parents couldn't afford me a drum set. I was a Metallica teenager and thought Lars Ulrich hung the moon, that was until I was 13 years old I heard Tom Sawyer playing on a station and was just blown away. It was that summer that I started mowing lawns to be able to afford my first drumset.
Drummer- As previously stated, it was Neil Peart that lit the fire under my backside to start the journey. There have been many more that I have found very inspiring, but that's my guy if I have to pick one.
Person- My dad had a client of his that played the drums and my dad had told him that I was saving for a set. Dean is his name and I still speak with him on a monthly basis. Eighteen years ago he sold me a Pearl maple 11 pc. set for $600. He really wanted me to get into it and gave me an unbelievable deal nad was always there offering encouragement as I began to learn the craft.
Style- My style is very blues based since I cut my teeth on this genre when I was in high school. The band I played in covered a lot of Stevie Ray tunes and blues in general. My current band still holds on to these roots pretty tight, although we play anything under the sun. Chris "Whipper" Layton is probably the drummer that my style mostly resembles. I am the most comfortable playing the shuffles and find myself trying to swing the beat no matter what the song "not always a good thing".
Inspirations- Neil Peart is probably the guy that keeps me going when I start feeling stale. I play nothing like the guy, but his creativity and drive are unparallel. The guy is always moving forward, whether it be drums or just life itself.

Person- Parents have been very supportive of my obsession with drums. I am grateful for that but my mentor is Tim Cartledge.
Style- I play death the most but I also rock at fusion and can sneak in a bit of jazz every now and then.
Inspirations- Spug's (Mudvayne) spontaneity, Joey's (Slipknot) speed, Portnoys and Virgil's brilliance, Mike's (Suffocation) blasting, Chris's (Lamb Of God) quad method

Drummer- John Bonham was the first drummer who I noticed had unique style, and I wanted to be able to play like him. Other major inspirational drummers for me include Jon Fishman, Ringo Starr, Kris Myers, and Jose Pasillas.
Person- My 5th grade music teacher, who probably is the reason I even play music now.

When I was younger I used to watch Video Hits and Rage alot in the morning. This was the time when Blink-182 put out 'All The Small Things' and you could see Travis Barker alot in the clip busting out. Thats one of my earliest memories of when I began to notice drums more in songs. Then when I got older my sister listened to Slipknot and so I started to aswell because I thought I was hardcore, then that really made me notice Joey. Then that really led me into drums from there and I began playing in the school band. Now I despise school bands and jam out with mates along to Lamb Of God and Trivium, or a bit of Cradle Of Filth by myself.

My mate stasted a band, but none of us knew how to play any instruments. He told me i was on guitar but i was not happy. As you can imagine the band went nowhere i didn't even meet any of the other members. When it didn't happen the mate that told me to learn the guitar started playing guitar, this meant that i could learn the drums... so eventually i started... best choice i ever made.
Drummers like Chad Smith (RHCP) and Brad Wilk (RATM) started me off and then i began to look at the more technical stuff. At the moment i love Michael Barker from The John Butler Trio.

I was in a big band for my middle school as 4th trumpet in 6th grade. I've never heard live drums, so I was surprised at how much better music sounded with drums added. The drummer in our band was actually pretty good, and made me want to play. I went into a local guitar center and bashed on a roland v-drum which I believe was a TD-6, and I was playing a 8th note pattern and a jazz pattern just by listening to the drummer in the big band. My parents bought me a kit and I still play every day for more than 2 hours.

The first time I started was in 6th grade, but I stopped playing for about a year and a half between 8th and 9th grade, so I really had two sets of "hows"
1st
Music - The Who, Jimi Hendrix Experience, AC/DC, The Beatles.
Drummer - Didn't know any
Person - Nobody
Style - Classic Rock
Influence - Banging on stuff, sort of whimsical
2nd
Music - Jimi Hendrix Experience, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Aerosmith, John Mayer Trio
Drummer - John Bonham, Mitch Mitchell
Person - My friend who played guitar and was looking for a drummer to jam with
Style - Rock, Classic Rock, Blues, Jazz, Funk, Pop (the good kind).
Influence - My original drum teacher was my high school music teacher and he asked if I wanted to start playing again. I said yes just because I didn't want to say no to him but then got really into drumming again, especially when I was able to start playing actual songs with other musicians as opposed to just playing beats by myself.

I think for me it was just one of those things that happened naturally. I didn't actually start to play until I was about 14 but my parents always told me that when I was a baby I would hit pots and pans and such and one of the drummers from my parents band gave me a pair of drumsticks when I was reeeaaallly young. The band guys they played with always said I would be a drummer so I guess you could say it was a natural progression in my life.

my mom got me into music at age 3... then, after recorder lessons, singing in the choir and taking home organ/keyboard lessons, at age 14 i finally got to choose the drums... that was in 94. drumming for me is a total relief and balances me out a lot. i like being able to make progress and watch it happen. while i also play a bit of guitar and bass, i do enjoy beating the heads a lot more. in addition to that, the wide variety of percussion options is pretty intriguing too... i've played with about a dozen bands, in 2 brass orchestras and a few ensembles. nothing beats (no pun intended) the feeling of getting behind the rack on stage and get the party going.
all in all, drumming even has a bit of a meditative component. so i can't wait to get behind the drums again...

What got me started playing drums? I was filling out my schedule for 7th grade so me and my buddy were picking all the easy classes, so I picked band for my 1st hour class. I had to practice on a Remo pad with 2B sticks for the first year in the lunchroom with some other beginners while the actual concert band practiced in the band room.

here's mine:
Music: Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, The Who, The Eagles and The Red Hot Chili Peppers
Drummer: There's quite a few drummers. Ringo Starr would be my number 1 to be honest. Just watching him go nuts on the drums and the hair wave and just the feel he had was amazing. Another drummer that influenced and still does me was Chad Smith. He's got great beats, awesome chops and what I've noticed is that he tends to play songs more better and gets more creative when playing live.
Person: My uncle I would have to say. I can still remember as a young toddler (about 1 and half, 2 years old...giver take) always going to my cousin's and just seeing this nice black drumset there and i would always sit there and play a basic beat. However it wasn't until I hit the age of 12 that I got my beginners kit. Up until then I would still tap a beat on anything that would resemble a drum to me lol.
Music: I'm pretty much open to anything. Aside from playing Rock, Punk and Metal I really enjoy playing Funk, Jazz and Reggae.
Inspirations: People who come up to me and compliment my drumming just puts a smile on my face alot and makes feel happy that I found something that I'm good at. My cousin and all her friends who are like 23 years old always ask me to teach them how to play lol...kinda weird having a teenager teching adults how to play drums isn't it lol?

I started in grammar school. After the cello was too boring and trumpet hurt my lips, I turned to the snare drum in the school band until I got a drum set at 13. I quit the school band and started taking drum lessons. Never looked back after that.
Right around the same time (13), I was given a used copy of Led Zeppelin II. Needles to say, I was really hooked!

Ever since I first heard "Time Stand Still" by Rush, I had an interest in drums. When I heard "Subdivisions", I REALLY took an interest. I went out, bought sticks, and spent the next 20 years as a professional "air drummer"
After 35 years of playing hockey "goalie", I had to retire due to health issues 2 years ago. It broke my heart. My buds convinced me to come out and jam with them about 2 years back, to get me out of the house, and it was a blast to play. But it was only once or twice a month, and my buddys kit was destroyed. Well after hounding my wife, she bought me some gear for Christmas "06. Been a real blast getting to learn my way around the kit, plus I don't know if it was all the "air drumming" to Rush, but it took me no time to get a feel for drums, and I have had no issues with co-ordination and such that many beginners have trouble with.
Back when I played hockey, goaltending for me was an obsession. I was always reading on the subject, practicing to be my best. I never thought i'd feel that feeling again, the passion.
My wife told me yesterday I am OBSESSED with drums and everything that goes with it.
Guess I was wrong!

I started listening to thrash metal like Metallica when i was 5. Ever since then ive been listening to a lot of modern death metal, as well as some old stuff. Mostly what got me into drumming was videos on youtube of people like Mike Portnoy(Dream Theatre) Jaska Raatikainen(Children Of Bodom) And Chris Adler (Lamb Of God)
Plus my best friend is an amazing drummer. He even gets free equipment from Pearl sometimes. Hes REALLY good. And he told me he would teach me some stuff. Ever since ive been down in a sound proof basement banging on his 8 piece pearl master kit. Though I myself only have an Alesis Dm5 Pro electronic Kit.

one of my friends said that i would make a good drummer because i was always tapping away and whatnot. so then after that i was a "air" drummer for about a year or two and then my brother (who plays guitar) said it would be cool if i got a kit and he convinced me to start playing, so i started taking lessons at school and then a couple months later i bought a cb drums kit and here i am now. some of my inspirations were travis smith from trivum and dave lombardo from slayer.

Music: It was before I was 4 probably, the music that my dad was listenning, which is Jazz, Jazz-rock, Prog-rock, classic-rock, Names? Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Jimi Hendrix, SRV, Pink Floyd, Sting, The Police, Chick Corea, Spyro Gyra, Weather Report, Mahavisnu Orchestra, King Crimson, Stanley Clarke, Steve Gadd, Phil Collins, Buddy Rich band and others.
Drummer: My favorite visible influences from whom I steal the most of my drumming are: 1.John Bonham, 2.Phil Collins, 3.Aaron Gillespie(Underoath), 4.Steve Gadd, 5. Buddy Rich, 6. Art Blakey, so many other but the most visible are the first 3.Its really mixed between those 3.
Person: My dad who himself started drumming at 14 studyed drums in college and learn me all about drums basics seriously since I'm 4. He learned me to be more than a drummer and to explore outside of drumming to get my influence so that i can be a better drummer and developpe my own sound adn to practise a lot. He was a music lover a passionate for good arangement, be a good solo drummer but learn how to play with the band and to let song play by itself, play for the song be simple is harder than be tech, drum is more in the controle of our mind and what we play the speed and the impression. Anyway a lot of things he though me he was like a Yoda to me hahaha.
Style: My favorite style currently is Northern-Rock, I just invented that hahaha. It describe what we play in my band cus its a big mix of style so to be short we just call it northern rock cause I'm from Montreal. Basically I was first listenning and learning the music from my dad which i already mentionned, then I was into my age music style, radio rock alternative, punk rock then sk-punk, ska-core, then hard-core and then metal. I got tired of all that noisy music went back to more mature music rediscovering my dad's music, prog-rock and classic-rock learn the arrangements before the playing more thoughful music than just fealing and just throw-up trashy music. I lstenned to hip-hop also after looking at skateboard video it was psyching for skateboard session, then electro-dj ambiance music for films etc. Then classical music and Indie-rock, after being through most of all music style intensly I'm now at an even state on all the styles, I listen to all and judge impartially within the style itself and I merge everything i liked in my life but I'm more open minded now than just one style. So I could that I prefer rock alternative to be very wide but also jazz, folk and classical, i mix all that together, I dig post-harcore a lot but not all the time it depends how i feal i always listen to different stuff.
Inspiration: Biggest is Led Zeppelin, then, Radiohead, genesis, Underoath, Thrice, As Cities Burn, Mewithoutyou, Dogwood, Arcade Fire, and so many others those are the main.

Jon Farris of INXS is a very underrated drummer. I got started the usual way: interest, sticks and practice pad, lessons, crummy drumkit, more lessons, better drumkit, more lessons, a very good drum kit . . . but Jon Farris was a big part of me wanting to play the drums

I was 8 & happened to see the most beautiful contraption of drums an 8 yr old has ever seen. I begged my dad to let me play them...some other adult finally gave in....the rest is history.
To this day, my dad won't let me ride behind him in the car...he has flashbacks of all those years when I beat on his headrest. :)

One of my uncles is a '60s drummer (plays a mean Little-B solo having only one arm!) and as a consequence huge music lover. I was somewhere around five or six when he interrupted a family gathering to set up his projector and screen to show us a film of John Bonham playing Moby Dick. I think he played amber Vistalites but I'm not sure (been a while) but anyway, I knew that was what I wanted to do. (or die trying...)
I've always loved Ludwig Vistalites, and thats probably why I think I picked it up there. It's one of the oldest memories I have.

My dad wanted me to take up an instrument and suggested guitar and i was like na i dont wanna play guitar (no offence to the guitar players) but all my friends played it and i took a liking to the drums.
At this time i was listening to Blink and checked out their drummer (travis barker) on youtube and i was like *jaw drops*. Something clicked in my mind that i wanted to play like that one day.

My dads influence mostly.... i tried taking up the guitar, but then i realized everyone else played the guitar. i wanted to be different, and so my dad showed me some Who tapes. when i saw Moon behind those drums, ( I think the first clip i saw was The Who on the rolling stones rock and roll circus) i couldnt tear my eyes away. I wanted to be the power behind the music, the youthful, uncontrollable edge that Moon was to The Who. My dad taught me the basic beats, and afterwards i was entirely self taught. The rest is three and a half year history.

Music- The Beatles, Nils Lofgren, Bruce Springsteen and Mötley Crüe at the time I think.
Drummer- Chad Smith, Ian Paice, Samantha Maloney and my dad.
Person- My dad who I love very much for that!
Style- Rockabilly, Punk, Psycobilly and reggea.
Inspirations- I've always been kind of a "boy-girl", and I couldn't keep up with them in sports and all the other boyish activities. But then I tried playing the drums and figured out that that was alot of fun. And since I had more patience then the other boys I got much better faster then them, and I think that's something that still inspires me :)

There's a millions replies to this thread, and mine wont stand out at all, but...
I only just started getting into music, well, real music (I dont count Dance) until I was 19 or 20. Really anything from the 60's and 70's rock scene (Led Zep being my fav)
I always fancied learning guitar because my Dad was so into it, but the instrument never grabbed me and I never felt any real draw to it.
I'd moved away from home to follow a job in a new town and found myself with very little to do with my time. I had no friends close by so would visit as many rock bars as possible. I remember walking passed a shop window with a drum kit on show and thinking 'that looks like loads of fun'
A few days later, while talking to my mother I mentioned I'd quite like a drum kit. She went mental! Told me not to be so silly and to buy a guitar with a pair of headphones.
Typically, against my mothers wishes I bought a cheap CB drum kit - laced the thing with towls (to keep the volume down) and set about trying to kick out a 4/4 beat.
Over time I found myself tapping out rhythms while in the car, at work, watching TV etc but couldnt practice as often as I wanted as my kit was back at my parents house (I was still working away)
One weekend was spent working overtime in the office. I felt like I was working non-stop and needed a treat so the monday after I spent the overtime money on a Roland TD-6 and from that moment on, even 4 year later I practice every day!
Drums and cars are pretty much my whole life now, day job aside ; )
Music- Led Zeppelin. No question. But also The Secret Machines, Deep Purple, Hendrix.
Drummer- Bonham, Buddy, Joe Morello
Person- Me (sorry!) Nobody really encouraged me, it was all down to a passion for playing. If anything people who arnt into their music scoff at the idea of playing drums.
Style- Bonham - everything he does I am in awe of! Hard hitting but also his quieter moments.
Inspirations- The fun of it - sitting behind a giant drum kit, making all that noise and showing people what skills you've picked up - the physicality of playing, the coordination involved, hitting harder than the drummer before you (im terribly competitive!)

It was 1965-Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Ray Charles, Buddy Holly, the Everly Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis, James Brown, Roy Orbison and Muddy Waters initially then the English invasion-The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, The Animals , The Searchers, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Spencer Davis Group, The Who, John Mayal, Manfred Mann, The Hollies, The Moody Blues, ad infinitum....hee,hee,hee. Then it really got interesting with Hendrix, Zeppelin, etc. This could go all day. Dang who couldn't resist wanting to play the drums. My mom was tired of me beating all her pots and furniture to bits so buying me a drum kit seemed the lesser of two evils. Decades of neighbors in two states learned to love me-even when you could here me crank it up so the Apollo crew could her me on the moon. No wonder I'm deaf-no one wore hearing protection. After decades my playing had peaked, but visiting Drummerworld has re-ignited my passion and I have moved into entirely new directions-first buying the double pedal (which I just thought was a sin) and adding onto my cymbals. I completely changed my style and I am still re-inventing myself. Brushing the dust off myself and teaching this ole dog new tricks-I feel young again. All you guys and gals are great. All the videos on this site are just inspirational. I have become a jazz fanatic-I'm praying Tony Williams will reincarnate himself into me. I just love his way. But he is the drummer of the month. Next month we will see. I was just set on expanding my kt, when Bernhard added a Wolfgang Haffner video. I'm moving to smaller rather than larger now and trying to find the combination of sizes and heads for "my" sound. One of my old grad school mentors always told me to keep it simple stupid. I always forget that.

I wanted to learn to play something in our elementary school band in 6th grade - either trumpet or drums, something loud, you know? My mom probably didn't fancy a budding trumpet player, whereas with drums, a practice pad is enough. So she encouraged me to go with drums. 10 years later, and after making much more noise than a practice pad, I'm very grateful for the nudge to drums.
I wasn't that good at it b/c my influences at first was not so great more popular, less talented bands. Then I heard Dream Theater, and I was expanded to a whole new side of music with complexity. Other bands like Tool and Porcupine Tree have since moved ahead of Dream Theater, but it was an eye opening experience.

My brother started playing but never got anywhere in it and gave up...the drum set was left and i had joined a band filling in as a bassist (im a guitarist of 6 years so bass wasnt difficult to pick up)....that bands drummer was terrible (his primary instrument was bass) this kid had no rhythm no idea of timing or even the concept of a beat he just hit stuff...so we ended up switching off because i had descent rhythm good timing and had ideas of what to do from watching my brother...since then ive been learning and getting better at a rate im very satisfied with...the band ditched the bassist got a new one...i stuck with drums and we've gotten pretty descent

Of course it always starts off with banging on pots and pans as a kid.
But what really got me started was a band called 16Volt, I just had to learn the drums after I bought their SuperCoolNothingv2.0 album.
I was always interested in drums, I just never thought I'd really learn them. We'd go to Mars Music (before they went bankrupt) and bought guitar strings and guitar booklets, but I'd end up running over to the drum room and gazing at the wonderful kits. I'm actually glad that I took a keen interest, otherwise I wouldn't have played percussion in band or even started the drums.

I tinkered with kits over the years that my friends owned but never really got to learn on them or do what I wanted...all through my life however the bug has been in there and NOW I am going from a wanna be to a BE...I LOST MY WANNA and I am going to be getting my kit in the next week or so...I have always loved the timing of drums, the sound of drums, listening to drums brings joy to my heart and that is what got me into drumming. There is absolutely nothing that does not have timing to it...and drums brings it all together for me...there is just nothing better

Watching Peter Chris and loving Rock music. Since then, its been a long tough journey that I will treasure.
Some times I wish I was pianist. All I would have to haul around is my fingers lol.
But, everyone wants to be a drummer, right?
On many occasions on rehearsal days I would catch the guitar, bass, keyboard players behind my set dinkin' around on the kit when I walked in. It was always entertaining to me that these guys still wanted to learn how to play drums even though they were very accomplished musicians already.

I thought I had posted once but can't find it.......So here goes again maybe.
Music- Early 80's rock primarily
Drummer- Frankie Banali Of Quiet Riot was my first influence.
Person- I watched my brother play when we were over in England in 1983, I was 13 and from then on I was hooked, He even gave me his pair of Ludwig drum sticks that I played to death.
Style- Rock, funk, country/rock and a little Jazz (Though I'm not very good at it yet)
Inspirations-My Brother for starters, Frankie Banali, Cozy Powell, Buddy Rich, Neil Peart, etc etc. you get the idea, anyone who ever played something that caught my attention or anyone who enjoyed my playing is an influence.
Drums always sounded cool to me within music , thus I always wanted a drum set as a kid . My parents wouldn't allow me to have one , due to the loud volumes they produce . So I asked for a guitar and received one . I played guitar for a few years and as soon as I moved out of the house , I purchased my first drum set ! Peter Criss , Alex Van Halen !
Music- I started taking drum lessons when I started High School. Before that, in Middle school I was in an African drumming group, which was kind of cool. I just started drum lessons cause I wanted to, didn't realise I would enjoy as much as I do now. I used to listen to Green Day and punk stuff, my taste has completely changed now, and I feel I'm a lot more musical then before
Drummer- I didn't know much about drummers then, but now I basically try and drum to all the music and drummers I like, so Brad Wilk, Dave Grohl, Taylor Hawkins and Chad Smith.
Person- Suppose I could say my old music teacher who was really good at showing us african rhythms and the djembes and stuff.
Style- General rock I guess, all the bands I like I'll drum to.
Inspirations- I'm inspired by everything I hear, whether I particularly like it or not.

I was in 5th grade and saw this amazing drummer who was in 8th grade. The junior high band went around to the elementary schools to recruit for their 6th grade band. I thought this guy was amazing. He had a 4 piece black diamond pearl Slingerland kit that sound so cool. My older brother played sax in the same band and he sort of introduced me to basic beats, rhythms, ect. Before that it was guitar which I sucked at, and then french horn, which I also sucked at. But seeing this 8th grader on the drums was what did it. I got home and announced I wanted to play drums like John R. So the next year in 6th grade, I started in beginner band playing drums. I was hooked and wanted to be a pro drummer!! When I finally got to HS drum line, he was the senior squad leader and was very nurturing and was more than willing to pass on what he knew.
What got me out of playing drums and playing music all together? Some bratty drummers who were egotistical and arrogant to the nth degree! One in particular had an ego problem that was as big as Texas. I had the misfortune of going all the way through school band with these punks. Browbeating, bullying, hazing, etc. Not nurturing and complementary at all, in any way. I wondered why I was even hanging around band with these jerks????
What got me back into drumming? My daughter gave me a pair of drum sticks from the Hard Rock Cafe in London. I started messing around and found out how much I missed it! She suggested I get the drums out of storeage and give them a whirl. I am hooked again!

hmmm...tough question hah, yeah for me also i've always been tappin around everywhere i went, and im a rythm person myself so the first time i sat at a drumset i kinda felt and knew what i needed ta do u kno ahah...my neighbor had one first so i played on his for a a few months, then finally i got my own and got more into it. Now im in a hard rock band and we're going strong, got a few good gigs. I started out listening to classic rock, thats my fav type of music, so its pretty ironic that im in a hard rock band hah, but we've grown accustomed to each others styles so it meshes nicely. My inspirations have to be neil peart, buddy rich, dave weckl but recently i started listen to joey jordison a lot and i have to say he's one of my favorites. If i magically wish myself mastery of drums id have dave weckl's technicallity, joey jordisons speed and creativity, neil peart's creativity also and john bonhams and keith moons passion. there, thats me ina few years ahaha...

I now have the pleasure of playing with a group of musicians very dedicated, strong, creative, and fun to be around!
Like someone said before me, I doubt this post will be noticed.
well anyway down to the point. at a a very young age of 3 my father (when not playing his guitar) would always be tapping a beat on the table or on a chair (sometimes even my head lol), seeing if i could imitate the beat that he would do.
By the age of eight i was so into playing beats on things (what ever was near me), that i soon had more rhythm than my that father had. At the age of 9 my parents were going mad from all the tapping that would do, so they decided to buy me a pair of bongo's.
Well that was it, i was hooked. From then on i was self taught, learning little things here and there when ever I could from bands and people that I would see on TV.
Than one day at church i was watching the drummer playing to one of the songs that they were singing, and from there on in I had a secret want to be able to learn the drums. I am now 16, i have just recently been given a second hand Kit, but have been playing at church for about a year now, still without any drum lessons. But i am so Glad that I have my own kit now!, finally i can get some real practice :D

As a kid I always wanted to play the drums but my old man wouln't let me get a kit. I used to go down the road to my mates place and play on his Boosey and Hawks kit. So when I was 17 I swapped a camera for a drum kit. It was a Black Maxwin kit that had a pearl snare and a cymbal mount on the bass drum. ( wish I still had it but I sold it to buy my next kit, which I still have a Black Pearl wood/fibreglass). And of course years of listening to Ringo and the Beatles helped push me in the right direction.

Even when I was little, I was always fascinated with drums. But I didn't start playing until I was 15. I played trombone in my school marching band at the time, and there was a drum kit set up in the band room. So I would play on the drum kit before school, and pretty soon, I quit playing trombone and quit the marching band, got my own kit, got some people from my school who played instruments, and started a band of my own.
About 3 years and a few bands later, I'm still going strong. I'm going to play drums until I physically can't do it anymore.

I'm sure we all have a defining moment that sealed the deal in our want/need to become a drummer .... what's yours?
Here's mine .... I was about 6 years old and was already interested in drums. My dad had played when he was young and I loved looking at the pictures of his old kit. But really, it was when I heard "I Feel Free" by Cream as the soundtrack to a car ad on TV and it took my breath away - I'd never heard anything like it before! I asked what it was and he pulled out a beat up copy of The Best Of Cream & suggested I listen to what he descibed as "the best drummer in the world, apart from Buddy Rich"! ha ha! So I listened to 'Badge' and there it was ... the simple drum fill that leads into the guitar solo that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end! I knew there & then the deal was sealed!
The next week Dad took me to the local music shop and bought me a pair of sticks from the seconds bin that were bent out of shape like banana's & my very very first practice pad ... the rest as they say, is history!

I have always loved drums and always been fascinated by it. I remember watching Buddy Rich and Billy Cobham soloing on TV and that really inspired me.
I got my first drum when I was 13 and what I wanted the most is having a band and make a career out of it. But in vain! Now with a familly and a regular job, drum became a sideline.
I personally have not explaination why drum over guitar or piano. I have always liked drum and for me it was a natural decision.

In the summer of 1996, a family friend let me borrow his Tama Inperialstar kit, which was the first real set I ever played on. Also, I had started to rummage thru my dad's old vinyl records and found two in particular that still insipre me today: Santana's Abraxas[I] and [I]Led Zeppelin II. As soon as I heard John Bonham's playing, I wanted to follow in his gigantic footsteps! 12 years later. . .I'm still playing and I don't see any reason to stop!

I'm sure we all have a defining moment that sealed the deal in our want/need to become a drummer .... what's yours?
I have been involved with music of one form or another my whole life (in my pre-teens I sang in choir and a barbershop chorus, at age 7 I got my first guitar and took piano lessons - I sang and played guitar in a few bands throughout high school and college, etc) - my defining moment of the drums was when I got RockBand as a Christmas gift and I loved (and hated) the drums. I sucked and the more I played, the better I got.
At that point I decided that I wanted to learn to actually play drums so I started taking lessons, bought an ekit and started actually practicing instead of just sitting around playing a video game.

I was 10 years old, in elementary school. The junior high band came to our school to recruit for thier band for the next year. My older brother played alto sax in that band, so I was somewhat familiar with the school band program. I had tried French Horn, from my older brother's friend letting me borrow it, but I really sounded bad. I had tried guitar, but didn't really get it. When I saw the junior high jazz band peform, I was in awe. They had this drummer playing a black diamond pearl Slingerland drum set who was amazing. He went all over the kit. And his solos were increadible. Mind you I was only 10 at the time and this drummer was 13 or 14, but he sounded just increadible. I went home that night and announced I wanted "to play the drums like that cool drummer I saw at school today!"
Family discussions were held, phone calls were made, and when I got into 6th grade band a few months later, I was a drummer. And my parents enrolled me in drum lessons. When I became 1st chair a few months later, I begged my parents for a drum set. That Christmas I was 11 and got a blue sparkle drum set. And I've been a drummer ever since. Sometimes playing, sometimes not playing, but ALWAYS listening and trying to learn.

When i heard the song "I Stand Alone" by Godsmack. My first reaction was "damn, i need to be able to do that." At the time i was in elementary school in the school orchestra, playing percussion, but never bothered with the set, after i heard that song, i knew i wanted to become a drummer. Now, I believe I've reached that level and have begun to move on to bigger and better things in the world of not only drumming and rhythm but with melody and harmony.

Does anyone decide to be a drummer?
I think you already are, you just don't know it.
I think its more like 'when did you discover that you were a drummer' ? My discovery was like almost everyone else's. Pots, pans, spoons, play-alongs with the radio...etc.
I saw a set of drums in a music store window and I knew I could play them without every having held a drumstick.
I lied to my school band when they were looking for a drummer and told them " Yeah, I play" .
My 1st rehearsal with my school band was the first time I'd ever touched a drum set. It was like knowing you could swim before jumping into a pool.
Them: "You know Evil Ways by Santana"?
Me: "Sure".
Them: "Lets go, 1-2-3-4-........."
That was it.

I was always fascinated with either the drums or the bass guitar when I was younger. I wanted to learn to play either one, or better yet both.
But anyway, I was homeschooled for about a year, and I started gettin really bored during the year. My brother had a small electronic pad with two wired, less then a foot long, pedals that he messed around with when he was like...13, but around that time he was now 17. So I went up in my storage room, and saw them and was determined to get the basic groove down. I sat there practicing for atleast 30 minutes trying to get it(I'm stubborn, so I never quit till I have it). Then I eventually got it, feeling like I had made a HUGE accomplishment (I was 12-13 then). From that point I was hooked on it. I self-taught myself mostly, till I kept begging my parents to buy me a real set, or just anything better then the piece of junk I had. Then I started taking lessons. And now I play for my youth group at church, and sometimes the big service they have in the auditorium. I love it, and I can't stop =]

My mom said that I'd rather bang on pots and pans rather than play with toys as a toddler so I think it is just in my blood. I got my first kit at 15 and was instantly addicted.I'm 33 now and still in love with it. I can't stop collecting stuff either. I have 3 kits, 4 snares, 2 sets of bongos, a set of roto-toms, 2 double pedals, 4 cowbells, 5 crashes, 2 splashes, 2 sets of hats(14" and 15"), a ride, a china(all Zildjian, most vintage), wood block, shaker, 2 guitars, 2 basses, 2 amps, 2 keyboards, 1 home studio.

I always found tapping on things fun and always liked music. Mum gave me a pair of bongos for Christmas and I used plastic Meccano "sticks" and a tall ashtray with a metal top as a cymbal to play along with records.
A boy at school was into drumming and one time I went over to his place and he gave me a go on his kit. He showed me how to play a basic frug beat and I picked it up almost immediately.
I've been playing that same %$#@! beat every since :)

I began playing drums when I was 5. Two of my uncles were national country artists, and I used to go watch them play all of the time. My mother is also a guitar player, so I was always surrounded by music. I used to want to listen to cassette tapes because I could recognize the cover of it, before I could even read (so my mother says).
My cousin played in my uncle's country band, and needed a good home for his Pearl kit that he was no longer playing. He gave it to me when I was 5 as a Christmas gift, and I've been playing ever since.
I have had the opportunity to play all over the country with many amazing musicians, and am about to expand my horizons completely starting in January. I can't wait for the tour!

All my life, I was surrounded by music. My grandpa got me into drums once i saw him playing on a 1972 Ludwig Vistalite "tequila sunrise" kit. But once he passed away, i lost my passion to play drums till i was at a Avenged Sevenfold concert and the drummer "The Rev" some how inspired me again. And after i had been talkign about it, my grandma told me she didn't sell the Ludwig because no one wanted it, my face lit up once i saw it again at the age of thirteen, im fifteen now and have moved onto a PDP X7 series set so i dont end up killing the Ludwig lol. But i do occasionally get on that set and play around.

While watching Keith Moon, playing My Generation.
Bill Ward, playing War Pigs.
Roger Taylor, drumming Now I'm Here. and Sheer Heart Attack.
Ian Paice, The Mule.
John Bonham, Moby Dick.
I was a toddler by then, practising with 2 pencils on a cushion.
What started me playing drums was walking into a music store in Australia in the early 80s and seeing a silver 5-piece Tama Swingstar set with Paiste 101 cymbals on sale for $600. I was transfixed by it, saved up my money from my first job and bought it.
The general response was amazement that I could hammer out some solid rock beats as soon as I set it up, without any lessons or experience.
That was the beginning of Mick's Folly.
For mostly sentimental reasons, I'm still a Tama/Paiste guy.

This thread is a thread about the "HOW" that got you into to drums.....I would like to know.....
Music- ( The music and bands who got you into drums)
Drummer- (The drummer who got you into the drums)
Person- ( A specific person you know who got/helped get you into drums)
Style- ( The style you enjoy playing most on drums)
Inspirations- ( Anything that inspired you to play in the first place and keep on playing to the best of your abilities).
Music: During my senior year in high school (Birmingham High, Van Nuys, CA), our school sponsored concerts during school hours, so we could go see a group for one period. We had Sam and Dave, the Association, The Bobby Fuller Four, and then at a year end concert in about May of 1967 we had a concert in our football stadium opened by the Cyrkle, the Yellow Balloon, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, the Peanut Butter Conspiracy, and featuring the Doors and the Jefferson Airplane. I was hooked on LA and San Francisco sound of the late 60s. Especially the Grateful Dead.
Drummer Bill Kreutzmann/Grateful Dead, particularly between 1971 and 1973 when Mickey Hart wasn't playing with them
Person Dennis Kissick, an ethnomusicology major at UCLA, lead guitar in my first band, and still a good friend; and Bob Levey, my drum teacher and son of jazz great Stan Levey
StyleLA and SF Rock, Blues, blues based rock, jazz (thanks to Bob; whether he drilled me in hand-to-hand or independence, it always felt like jazz)
InspirationWow, it just feels so good to do a good job, when the band kicks it into gear and everybodies jumpin' . It just doesn't get any better. The endorphines are flowing and there's a big s**t eating grin on yer face. I get to be part of something bigger than me.

Music- Started off listening to Led Zeppelin, BB King, and Phil Keaggy then moved straight into 70's and retro funk (Average White Band), Christian and Contemporary (U2, Coldplay, etc), then into swing, and now i'm moving into the experimental/avant garde jazz ideology.
Drummer- Bonham, Weckl, Will Champion... nowadays Vinnie Colaiuta, Elvin, Peter Erskine, some Steve Gadd
Person- I went into my high school jazz band thinking I was the drum king, and was hugely embarassed by the drummer they already had, who was out-of-this-world. He kept great time and had mind-blowing chops. He gave me free drum lessons during band every day for 2 years. It was great.
Style- Definitely jazz, but the full spectrum of it...ranging from New Orleans Funk, to afro-cuban, to straight-ahead swing, avant garde, and the fusiony side of it all.
Inspirations- the fascination I have with all aspects of music, all kinds of music, and all kinds of percussions.

Well, the school band was during it's yearly search for members, b/c our band out here doesnt start til the 7th grade. I couldent really do anything else, but the teacher noticed I could easily keep any pattern she tried to get me to play. She had me go over to percussion and it was too easy. Eventually I learned to play the set for one of our performances and then I just bought my own cruddy set after that. The rest, is history =p

I always tapped around with pencisl and pens making random shitty rythms, so i figured i'g like to hit some real drums. I was in army cadets at the time, i joined a military band for summer camps (i can say i went to "band camp" hahaha) and started with the marching snare. a kevlar headed single snared premier, it took a week to get the open rolls down pat and only got better from there. i played marching snare for about 4 years before i even touched a full kit, then finally got a shitty beginner kit, and now i'm on the total of 7 years in the field since starting snare. drums are the shit!!

i played guitar, wanted to be in a band but there were no drummers anywhere, got offered a crappy drum kit for free, thought "meh i'll do it myself" so i did. got lessons, practiced every night for about 6 months, got ok at it. then had to give it up cos i moved to a block of flats full of miserable people who complain and call the police alot. so here i am 2 years later, still playing guitar with a fleeting drum knowledge, wanting to be in a band but theres no drummers anywhere. i feel i've advanced

As a kid I always liked the drum corps. in parades that's how I first became interested. When I was in the 6th grade the music teacher came around looking for kids to join the music class. Orginally I wanted to play the Saxophone but they were all taken so she put me on snare drum. I feel in love with the drums right there and then. I begged my mom and dad to buy me a kit and eventually they did. The rest is pretty much history.

From the earliest time that I can remember I would attempt to bang out the beats that I heard on the radio with anything that I could find. One eve while I was staying up late with a baby sitter. (It was the sixties and I was about seven) I saw Buddy Rich play on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. I knew at that moment that I was hooked. I just had to play. I asked my parents to let me take drum lessons the next day. They wouldn't go for it. A few years later I joined a local Drum and Bugle Corps. I was able to raise the small amount of money for dues and get lessons that way. (I was in seventh grade then) I cut lawns in my neighborhood to get cash for a used kit and lessons at a local music store. I will never play like BR, but I will die trying.

Music- probably Aerosmith, althought there were no "I wanna be a drummer!" -bands for me
Drummer- Myself, after some time I started to worship (yes :D) Gavin Harrison and still do.
Person- My music teacher when I was 10, he just simply said during one of our very regular music lessons that I'd be on drums today and I was like why not. Simple start yes.
Style- Probably funk, althought I do enjoy playing nearly everything on drums.
Inspirations- The support I get from my parents and friends, and the fact that whenever I record myself playing I can see some progress happening, oh and of course Gavin :D

In 3rd grade we had an assembly where the students had to sign up for an instrument to play. I wanted drums but I was too late in signing up so I chose saxophone. I remember my dad playing a Buddy Rich album from time to time and I loved his drum solo on it. I would keep asking him to put it on and play it over and over. I think I'd always wanted to play but didn't start til I was 15 when I realized I really had to start.

I got started playing on my sunlight kit playing to rob zombie and metallica.
Grade 6, the school was starting a band program. My best friend and I at the time decided to join, we wanted to sit together so we picked the trombone. I thought it would be easy, cause there's only 7 positions.
A few months later, I started hanging out with another dude, he played snare. It looked like fun hanging out at the back of the room, so I switched up. We had learned to read rhythms while playing trombone, so without having to play a note to those rhythms, I found it easier. The rest is history.
I think what made me realize that I wanted to pursue music further, was a gig we played in high school, we opened up for "The Waltons", (anybody?), our gymnasium was packed with about 500 kids, just loving our tunes. There was a girl standing at the front of the audience who was a fan of our band, she was singing along to one of our tunes and that's when it hit me. I saw how much enjoyment she was getting and became a huge high for me. I've been chasing that high ever since. I kinda get it every now and again when we've got a club full of people dancing, but nothing has compared to that moment when I saw the huge smile on her face and the happiness in her eyes.
It's always about a girl, isn't it?

Hmmm...
That's odd. I could've sworn I had posted on this thread before, but I checked EVERY page and...whata' ya know...NOT ONCE! I would've thought I had. Anyway...
At the definite fact of repeating myself, it was seeing Buddy on the Tonight Show, in the early 70's, that planted the seed for me. I'll never forget the feeling I had when I saw him play. I was in absolute awe watching him. I was about 10 years old at the time, and it was the first time that I can remember being totally into what I was witnessing. WOW!
And about 5 years later... hearing "Freewill", from Permanent Waves(Neil Peart), and just realizing THIS is what I want to do as much as possible...play the drums.
That about sums it up. ;-)
Music-The Who
Drummer- Most likely Keith Moon
Person-The drum teacher at my school :-)
Style-Rock, metal
Inspirations-You know the scene in Wayne's World where Garth does that drum solo in the music shop? Probably that :-P

Music- The first band of which I appreciated the drums was System of a Down. SOAD was also the first band which I learned to properly appreciate besides lyrics. Then I rediscovered Rush from my childhood, and got to know Neil's sexy beats. (I probably would never have learned to appreciate Rush if it weren't for SOAD, honestly.)
Drummer- Neil Peart. Enough said.
Person- My dad, who is a guitarist, and once played drums in his time. (I have his sticks.)
Style- My home style is hard rock, but I want to expand into jazz, blues, African folk and reggae.
Inspirations- At the same time I was rediscovering Rush, I was playing piano. I am a crappy pianist and composer. Then I realized that while my melodic compositions may suck, they all have interesting beats to them. Then I figured I would make a better percussionist than any other musician.
I also had visions of myself in the Limelight, pulling stunts like playing an entire tour leg blindfolded, playing with one arm tied behind my back, etc. I've always wanted to be the sort of person other people look up to. I'm a self-centered person by nature, but instead of calling myself selfish, I want to put that to good use and inspire other people, and I figured drumming and drawing would be the way to do it.

Hey im new here :D
Music: Definatly Dream Theater (Mike Portnoy is just amazing imo), Rush, Spocks Beard and some more
Drummer: Mike Portnoy, Neil Peart
Person: Mike Portnoy pretty much inspired me to take the drum seriously, along with Neil Peart
Style: Prog Rock drumming mainly, Metal and Rock
Ever since I was little I always like tapping to the beats of songs, but never really considered getting a kit. I did have Bongos which was pretty much as close as I could get. Last year in August I finally got my first kit and still building it, I play alot on the kit at school which has a double pedal and Im thinking of adding 2nd bass drum to my kit at home as I think overall it would look alot better than just a double pedal (I know I know.. but the look of the kit motivates me), anyway things are going well! Only been playing for 7months and can play alot of Dream Theater stuff. My fav thing to play is Octavarium by Dream Theater, Ill be posting vids on my YouTube account and Ill tell you guys when I do. I also play Piano. :D

Music - Has to be the founders of metal e.g Metallica (Lars Ulrich), Iron Maiden (Nicko Mcbrain), Black Sabbath (Bill Ward) etc etc
Drummer - Torn between two. Lars Ulrich of Metallica and John Bonham of Led Zeppelin.
Person - My dad once had a band and was telling me about it once. Also a friend from school, who started in about Year 3 or something, and I started in like Year 6. Much better than him now nevertheless :D.
Style - About 90% rock and metal, with also some work on funk. I don't know why I never got into Jazz drumming. I have an Art Blakey CD with the Jazz Messengers and I love it, it's amazing. But I never really got into it.
Inspirations - Fast paced stuff eg Slayer (Dave Lombardo), DragonForce (Dave Mackintosh) and some of Nicko Mcbrain with Iron Maiden. I also think Joey Jordison of Slipknot is amazing, and again Lars from Metallica.

At first, I started playing acoustic guitar, but after a few months of practicing hard, and still being bad at it, I saw that strings just aren't my thing; Yet, I wanted to make music, to be a part of a band. I tried drums, and instantly fell in love with them. So I would say I started to play out of curiosity which instrument would suit me best. Trial and error. I missed only once :)

The defining moment that made me a drummer:
Really didn't have anything to do with me wanting to become a musician, I
actually was a writer and an artist.
But one of my best friends and I were sitting in my room listening to Boston.
Just joking around I sat on the edge of my bed and started to play air-drums.
Since he was a guitarist I didn't want to take his air-guitar solo. I played through
a good part of the song and noticed he was just kinda looking at me with a
sort of strange grin. Then as soon as the song ended he excitingly piped up
and said "Man It Really Looked Like You Were Playing That Song...You should
get a drum kit!" I was like...'really?'..."Yeah definately!" he replied.
So that week we found someone with a used drum kit for $40. 4 months later
I purchased my first Tama kit with my graduation money. Still using the
Avanti hi-hats and Sonor crash from the $40 kit for 5yrs. And i've been playing
ever since...never taking more than few days off in between when I was new and
frustrated.
Looking back I wish I never used the Sonor cymbal. I ended up breaking
it, and not knowing what I had back then was a vintage piece that would be
nearly impossible to replace.

I remember as a kid that my mom would let me stay up late (on a school night) to watch Buddy Rich on the Tonight Show. He was always amazing. That's when I knew that I wanted to play. Of course time has passed and life as gotten in the way...and I'm finally back to do love.

Music - Zeppelin, Yardbirds, Foo Fighters (yah..thats odd)
Drummer - I'm currently digging Stanton Moore
Person - God himself who gave me this constant need to bang, tap, stomp, and slap on anything within arms length because I certainly didn't get it from my parents.
Style - Early rock and blues
Inspirations - My son. I want to be able to give this to him. And teach him that even in the hardest times of his life, never give up on the things you love.

My older brother got a drum set for his birthday and only played for about a month then lost interest in it so I started playing it. That was 40 years ago.

I can't remember. :(
I think it had something to do with a previous crush of mine who said she liked drums. Either that or it was a drum at the Yamaha at the nearby mall that caught my eye :)

Watching music videos of Pinoy rock artists... I've always wanted a drum kit but couldn't afford one, so I gave up. Then Rock Band came out... :P
Man i'll never forget what got me into drumming. I was walking home from school one day with my mate and he turned to me and said i'm learning bass guitar and i want to start a band. I was like cool. He said to me, 'will you learn drums?' and i said yeah and the more i thought of the prospect, the more i liked it. So the day after i sat behind the kit and had no idea what to do. A girl i knew had learned rock 4 and showed me the basic beat so i tried it. I couldn't put the bass drum in right away so i remember playing this beat without a bass drum for a good few weeks. But i would sit in the music block every night and play drums when i eventually did put the bass drum in, some incredible feeling came over me that i was accomplishing something great even though it's so basic now. Then i started to teach myself individual things like open hi-hats and fills and i would make sure that i got the beat i wanted before i left to go home. A few drummers who got lessons in school showed me some more basic stuff which i played for a while but when i got to a certain point i just rocketed and 1 and a half years later i thought that what i could play was great, then 2 new guys came into to school and showed me stuff, i was blown away and it made me realise that i knew nothing in comparison to what they did which just fed my hunger to learn more. 5 years later and i'm still teaching myself and it is the best thing in the world.

Hi everyone!
At my web site, I have an 'About' page describing a little bit about what the site's about, and a little blurb about me. I decided to expand on that and write an article about my 'drumming' life, that I hope you all will find interesting. Here's the link to the article:

Envy I guess, a classmate had a drumset and he sucked at drums so bad... He always took it to music class and he wouldn't let me play his drumset at all (and he let others ''play'' it) and that just made me so mad, I started air drumming using screwdrivers as drumsticks (that was the closest I would get to a drumstick at the time) at home some time before that ''incident''. Basically what started me I guess it was this douche that just let me play once and Queen's ''Fat Bottomed Girls'' huuge and exagerate fill, I just love it xD

Well, my mom had all the old Beatles albums and that started me on my love of rock'n'roll. Then, growing up in the 1970's, many of the cartoons featured the characters playing in bands: Josie and the Pussycats, The Archies, Fat Albert, The Partridge Family in Space, The Brady Kids (I'm not making these up),,.. I always thought the drummers seemed the coolest--especially Jughead on The Archies. So, when I got to 5th grade and could play in school band, I chose the drums. Not knowing any other real drummers by name yet, Ringo became my favorite. Later I really dug John Bonham, Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, Mitch Mitchell, Neil Peart, etc. Since my teen years were the 80's I got into all the loud, bombastic, fast metal drummers. Now, though, I prefer to keep it simpler and play what compliments the song. Looking back at some of the bands I played in during my younger years, I realize I was hijacking the songs with my fancy stuff.

Led zep's stairway to heaven! my ma practically raised me listening to led zep in the car, and whenever stairway came on, i was determined to nail that starting drum fill :P always found myself air drumming frantically rather than air guitaring and when i was about 9 or 10 i really got into reading up on drummers and drooling over cymbal catalogues, despite having never laid a stick on a head in my life! then when i got to secondary school, we got letter sent around asking if we wanted to start learning how to play an instrument and low and behold the drums were on the list! i guess the rest is history, 8 years on and im still going strong

Well, I grew up in a house filled with music, my dad was in a couple of southern gospel bands, and owned home studio. So i would always be surrounded with music. As a child I was always fascinated with the drums, playing on the clients drumsets, and playing every sunday after church. So my parents finally recognized my interest and bought me a tama stagestar. I played the heck out of that set. My father taught me, not how to play the drums, but how to go out and buy DVD's. I've never taken a lesson, Just worked with my dad in the studio and watched teaching DVD's. I owe my fascination to my father and all the great drummers out there!

Funny story actually. I entered in a lucky draw and actually won some money. It wasn't much, but money is money. I remember how I didn't know what to do with it, and just got this urge to buy a drum kit. So I bought an second hand set with the money, sat infront of the kit and learned myself to play, until, 2 years later, I got some lessons.

Hmmm a lot of things. music was always in our house and im thankful for that i guess. my dad played everything from the piano to the violin (well, i guess the way he played it it was a fiddle). As long as i can remember my mother sang. step brothers that played guitar, all my family members played some sort of stringed instrument. guess i wanted to be different.
even as a lil kid i remember always watching the drummer of any type of band i saw. i used to stay up late so i could flip between lettrerman and carson to see if either of the bands were playing or they had a musical guest...so oddly enough, they were influences to me (well, the drummers). i learned a lot watching anton figg on letterman. guess my biggest influence was a local kid named brian watkins. he played in one of my dads bands when i was real young...he was a few years older than me so i always looked up to him.
What got me started? my dad forking over some cash to buy me a cheap set of NEW slingerlands and some sabian b8's. probably around 1980 ish?? it was a hunk of money back then, there was no internet deals (or internet for that matter)...just full on retail prices. He did it anyway...gotta love him forever for that.

Almost all of my favorite bands have phenomenal drummers that get a ton of freedom, and I find that what they do has a huge effect on the songs as a whole. Also, I need to learn another instrument and I don't want to learn guitar.

Music- the first rock bands I ever really listened to were christian rock bands because thats just what my dad listened to alot and i would just play there songs over our amp systems and drum along
Drummer- The first drummer that I was really inspired by when I got serious about drumming was WUV from P.O.D
Person- My dad is a really good guitar player and can play other instruments and he taught me how to play the basic beat on our drumset one day and from then it slowly grew on.
Style- At first the only style I really even wanted to play was rock but about 2 years ago I started getting into funk and latin styles of drumming after listening to drummers such as Thomas Lang and Benny Greb.
Inspirations- I learned how to play drums when I was 6 years old but didn't really get into it until I saw the movie School of Rock because it made me want to start my own band.

Music- I always liked the 80's music and that's what I've been listening to my entire life. (I'm 18)
Drummer- The first drummer I really liked was Max Weinberg from the E Street Band (Bruce Springsteen) I started playing drums after listening to Born in the U.S.A.
Style- I prefer just plain old rock and roll. (Classic Rock)
