View Full Version : Your Perfect set?

I have recently purchased a sunburst colored tama Rockstar set, I aslo have 14" Rock hats, 14" Fast Crash, 20" Rock ride, and a 16" rock Crash, all Zildjian. I play mostly metal, and currently have Gibraltar double kick with the beater bar. What i want to do is get another bass drum, another floor tom, and some cow bells. i also want to get another Rock Crash, and have the Fast Crash by the hi-hat, and a 18"-20" China, so when i play breaks, I can end by hitting the Fast and the China (because it sounds bad ass). Maybe even throw in another rack tom in there. Why? I want to expand my playability. Waht do you think?

What would be your perfect set?

Damn! beat me to it. ;)

But as to the question posed, how you set up your kit, and what you add is a very personal decision. Everybody has a favorite set-up, brand of drums or cymbals, and a positioning preference, but what is right for me may not suit you.

Its just my opinion, but I would suggest that you pick your add-ons carefully. Gear is expensive, and there is no use putting something on your kit that you will rarely or never hit. Rather than expanding your playability, experiment with getting more sounds out of what you have.

The fact of the matter is that unless you are an "uber-pro," any addition to your kit will require you to alter your style and routine to some degree. A second BD is a good example. They have a different feel from a double pedal set up, and require a lot of tweaking to get them in tune with the other BD.

I am as guilty as the next guy, but don’t but something just because it looks good or cool. Carefully choose your gear to compliment your overall sound. The cowbells you mentioned will add a nice new sound, and china cymbals are great for accents too.

Anyway, sorry to have been long-winded. "The Reader's Digest" version- choose carefully, and make sure that -
A. You need it, and
B. It will improve your overall sound.

Well, the BD i want to add on is only for the comfortability factor and the tone. I went to Guitar Center, and played for about half an hour on a Tama Swingstar double bass set-up, it was the greatest felling i've ever had on drums, so thats where i made the decision to get another one, plus i want to get a more even tone with my double bass, and be facing the audience in stead of my guitarists speakers at our shows.

I always can`t decide if I want a 4 or 5 piece set! but overall I would like to have a Tama Starclassic Performer Birch/Bubinga in Gold crush Glitter...5 piece :-) then with some great cymbals like HHX Evo hats and K ride, K Custom Dry Light Ride (I`ll get this onw soon) and a HHX 12" splash or a Constantinople flat ride it would be awesome...

similar to this...

Just had to post my new Maple Custom Absolutes--started paying back in college, life, carreer, kids came along, and started back up again a couple of years ago with a set ot Tama Rockstars. These are a lifelong dream--beautiful kit, gorgeous sound--couldn't be happier.

My dream kit would be a Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute with 10 inch, 12 inch rack toms, 14 and 16 inch floor toms, an 18x22 bass, a Dave Weckl signature snare as my main, and a david garibaldi snare as my sub snare. Either that or a 6 piece Sonor Designer kit in the same configuration and sizes.

My cymbal setup would be a 22 inch Sabian Vault Artisan Ride on the right, an 18 inch K Custom Session crash as my main crash to the left, my secondary crash a 16 inch K Custom Session crash to the right, a 10 inch splash between my rack toms, an 8 inch splash over my hats, a pair of 14 inch K Mastersound hats as my main hats, and a 17 inch K custom dark china to the right. I'd also take an LP red jamblock clipped to the bass, and a black beauty cowbell right by my ride.

My pedals would be either flying dragon DDs, or DW 9000s.

I'd keep Aquarian Studio Xs on the batter side of the toms, with Aquarian Classic Clears on the reso side. Id keep an Aquarian Texture Coated with Satian Finish on the snare with a Classic Clear on the reso side. I'd keep a Superkick II on my bass with a Regulator on the reso side. I'd also probably keep a set of Texture COated heads for my toms when I want that kind of sound. Say...for a jazz gig

Ooh good one. Mine would be a Ludwig classic maple in black oyster pearl. The bass would be a 22". I'd have 12" and 13" rack toms and 14" and 16" floor toms. The snare would be a 14" x 5 1/2" Ludwig Supraphonic. For cymbals (all Zildjians), I'd go with 14" Mastersound hi hats, a 16" K custom crash, a 16" A custom crash, an 18" K fast crash, and a 22" Avedis ride. For heads, I'd use Remo smooth white Emperors on the batter on the snare and toms, and clear Ambassadors on the resonant. I'd Have an Aquarian Superkick II on the bass batter, and a Remo custom head on the reso.

Like quite a few people on here by the look of it, I'm waiting for mine to be built:

matt black satin wax finish, with satin laquer layer for protection, 6mm 12ply finnish birch shells. Chrome classic slingerland-copy teardrop lugs.

22x18 and 18x16 virgin bass drums,

8x7
10x8
12x9
14x11
16x13 mounted toms.

It's being had built from scratch by a small independant custom builder over the next 2-6 months. Can't damn well wait!!!!!!! I'm going to use my existing array of pearl hardware, eliminators and optimounts as I've long been a Pearl man at heart.

I've already got most of the cymbals I want, nice selection of K's, K customs and A's, and a couple of paistes - something for every gig.

Every time I mention this I get really excited that it's on it's way (and i've seen bits of the shells being formed), then really depressed that I have to wait so long!

Glad to see someone else with a purple kit! That looks sharp!

Incidenatlly: I was on the fence about what finish to order for my kit. I was considering blue, forest green or purple glitter colors.

I thought blue and green were just too common by compare. Then, I lurked here and saw your kit pics. I said...yeah...gotta go with purple.

It's kinda like this: (except with black hardware)

My perfect set is a different color every year, and vintage, and Rogers, and a 4 piece, and has a matching snare drum, and is in perfect shape, and is not butcherblock.

And it never says PEARL anywhere.

y? b8s are my least favorite line of any cymbal out there (except the ones that came with my cb set). Considering zbt's are the lowest on the zildjian team, i dont think they are that bad. A couple weeks ago i did a rock camp, we went and recorded and we were using zbt's and they didnt sound that bad.

Yes dear. I've recorded using B8s. I've also recorded using AAX's, HH's and Istanbuls. Needless to say there is no comparison. I hasten to add I seriously doubt you have any studio time with high end cymbals.

Here's one from the files marked "Crazy, But True..."

In the past maybe, 12 years since I've owned them, I've done about 80% of my recording sessions with .... -- drum roll please -- .... Sabian B8 14" hi-hats!

Now, I own a pair of Paiste Signature hats, a pair of Sabian HH Fusion Hats, and a pair of Sabian AAX Metal Hats.

But for some stupid reason, I almost always go back to using the thrashed, worn out, barely unrecognizable pair for 1980s-era Sabian B8 hats. They're nice and dead, they stay way out of the mix, they're floppier than my other hats which makes for good feel, it's just strange, I know.

My ideal set-up:

That's what I would want if I were super-rich and could go nuts.
Tama Starclassic Bubinga,
14" hats, 14", 16" and 18" crash, 22" ride, 10" and 12" splash, 12" and 16" china. The rest of the image will speak for itself.

Fortunately I got pretty close when I ordered my new kit:

Which is a Tama Superstar Custom (ocean fade lacquer),
14" hats,16" and 18" crash, 10" and 12" splash, 16" china, 20" ride.

Needless to say, I am very happy with the kit I ordered.
Yes, I realize the difference between a superstar and a starclassic bubinga, and I realize that I'm lightyears away from the top kit... But come on, gimme a break ;) Superstars sound awesome too, and they are more affordable for a poor guy like me.

This DW kit looks unbelievably nice. It's the Waterfall Bubinga Private Reserve with gold hardware

I second that, and Mayer's SQ2

My dream utopia kit would be a kit that sets-up and tear's down by itself LOL but seriously folks probably the new stainless steel Ludwig Bonham kit or a Lake Superior Shell DW kit or heck Neal Pearts DW kit if your gonna dream might as well dream BIG LOL.

I've pretty much put together my Dream Kit ....which is expanding with another left side floor tom.

Drums:
Ludwig Classic Maple--Red Sparkle & Sable Black/ long Lugs, plus a few more sizes of toms & BD's in the Black.

The Black/Long lug drums go back 17 years, I didn't just get them all at once.

It was a "Hmmm, maybe I'd like this size now", and it blew up from there!

Sooo.....

Red Sparkle:

20X26 bass drum

6.5 Black Beauty snare--tube lugs, straight hoops (2, one is my 'back-up'--I have other snares, these just get used the most).

The snares have Tight-Screws on them, and they are a really great product.

9X13 rack tom

12X14 (coming soon!!) Left side FT

14X16 Left side FT

14X16 FT

16X18 FT

Cymbals:
Sabian
15" AA Sizzle hats

10" Mini hats Paragon top, old EFX1 bottom

2-19" AA Crashes (Med, Med. Thin)

24" AA Med. ride w/3 rivets (custom order-has extra edge hammering for more crashability).

20" Vault crash

20" AA Orchestral Suspended

21" AA Med. Thin crash (special order size)

21" AAX China (special order size) w/rivets...I had mine 6 years before Chad Smith got his haha!

There are more cymbals in "the collection", these just get used the most.

LP Bongo cowbell--chrome...I love this chrome cowbell!

Gibraltar 9600 Brake Tilter hardware, with some custom made hardware from DW & Gibraltar parts.
Pearl Eliminator single pedal.
Gibraltar Liquid Drive Hi Hat.

Heads: Remo.
All toms, Coated Ambassador top, Clear Ambassador bottom.

Snare head:
Coated Emperor w/top dot, Low collar Ambassador snare side.

Kick head:
Coated Ambassador batter, Smooth White Ambassador front.

Everything but the 12x14 floor tom is in the kit pic, and I made up a new stand to hold one of the 19" crashes and the 10" mini hats--don't have a pic of that yet.

I put my 6.5 Ludwig Classic Maple Red sparkle snare in the place the 12X14 FT is going to go, just to get used to another drum being there (that's not in the kit pic either).

That's probably about 2 floor toms too many for most people, but, it works for my playing style.

The 10" mini hats may be replaced by a Sabian 16" AA china w/rivets that's on it's way.

I have a kit just like RS Kit set up at the band rehearsal place in Black (besides the Black kit in the same sizes as the RS kit listed that is at home).

The rehearsal kit has an 18X26 kick, a 12x9 rack and a 13x15 Left side FT & 16 &18 FT's.

Same cymbal/hardware set-up as RS kit pic.
Cymbals are same sizes, mix of Zildjian and Sabian

...OK, I admit it...I got a lot of crap....at least it's not all set up in my basement....

...I don't spend my extra money on really anything other than drums, hardware... and parts to do my mad scientist hardware contraptions...

Let's just say my CD collection is NOT "up to date" and leave it at that...:P

If I could have a famous drummers kit, it would be a toss up between Michael Derosier's FULL Natural Maple Ludwig Heart kit.
The one with the Tympani, the bells, chimes, gong, etc....it's in the "Barracuda" video.

OR...

Alex Van Halen's 1979-1980 Ludwig Stainless Steel Ludwig kit with the center, left and right side Octobans. That kit is really cool...and it can take being set on fire!

Not that my wife thinks I need any more drums....

Thanks for your kind indulgence getting this far!

This one right here...

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2414/2284070129_1f930e52fd.jpg

A four-piece with four cymbals is truly the perfect kit. There's well enough things to hit, and it's still easy to carry to a gig. Of course, playing a four tom kit could be more fun, and adding more cymbals would definitely broaden the sonic palette, but the increased fun factor would be diminished by the kit's cumbersomeness...

Thanks, I really appreciate that!

I was a Zildjian man for 25+ years...then I couldn't get a good sounding A, and I really tried... and then they discontinued a couple things...

I switched to Sabian about 6 years ago, and they have a really great sound (well, they are the Zildjian formula after all), feel... everything that was great about the A's for so long that was lost in new manufacturing processes.

It wasn't me that changed...

I did hear some great 19" and 20" A's (really nice one's) that Steve Riley of LA Guns had a few weeks ago, and they were new one's, but I don't know if they were "off the shelf" or were picked out for him.

Hopefully, Zildjian can get the A's to sound great again.

The Armand stuff sounds real nice, and that's a step in the right direction, but I need 19 & 20" great sounding crashes and 15" hats. I wasn't able to get them anymore ... so what do you do?

Thanks again for the kind words, and that wood hoop 4 piece looks like a cool kit!!...but I gotta have 2 floor toms...it's a sickness, I know :-)

That's a cool sickness to have I know what you mean about Zildjians you have to pick through them to find a good one it seems no two Zildjians are alike even if they have the same size, weight & type a good friend of mine owns a music store and has had the Bonham Vistalite kit for a long time and I know he would give me a killer deal so maybe that's what part of my refund might go towards I've always loved that kit just wish I could get them in Blue and with a deeper bass 16" or larger not 14" but i'm sure I will love them anyway and that kit has always been sort of a dream kit of mine ever since I saw "the song remains the same" when I was a kid(i'm 37 now) my dad used to own a 70's clear vistalite kit with a 24" bass and that kit sounded great I still think you have one of the best Ludwig kits on this forum totally killer.
