hey guy's (sorry if this is in the wrong forum)
i recently downloaded this from off of a torrent website, which took me day's to download. Basically it's a video of a clinic Dave Lombardo (fantomas, slayer, testament, grip inc.) did sometime during 2004. I uploaded it at rapidshare. Because of it's file size being over 400MB, i had to break it up into 8 parts, each being around 8 minutes each. It's really fun to watch him play drums. As some of you might know, he never went to school for drums, so he doesn't know how to read music and explain things musically. anywaise, enough with the yapping, here it is:
Part1 (http://rapidshare.de/files/4200168/Dave_Lombardo_-_Clinic___FeedBack_Part_1-8.wmv.html)

no problem. and yes i know, its not the best host, but its the best free file hosting service i could find. i think only 1 person can download one file at a time on the free version..which kind of bites. But anywaise, if anybody know's any other host, ill gladly reuploaded it there.
@Stone Cold
lol, yea, ill definetly agree theres a few weird people in the crowd, especially the guy who asks him about a t.v. show (sally, jesse raphael or somethin lmao...speakin of..)

to pick it up again and now concrete:
what's your opinion on this guy?
for myself he has inspired me some years ago, because he never set himself boundaries for some genres. besides slayer he did the known side projects and also did some latin stuff.
If you see him play you see that he is self taugt but my intention wasn't to do one of these "he'sthebestdrummeroftheworldbecauseI'mignorantandd on'tknowanyotherdrummers-post" anyway. I like his style, seasons in the abyss, south of heaven and fantomes first lp are one of my favorites feat. lombardo. In my opinion he has done especially on the metal recordings some unusual rythm-stuff for this genre...
and also I have to give em props because he's a type of drummer who treats other drummers with respect

2 words...RAW ENERGY!!!!!!!!
I've been a Lombardo fan since the first day i heard SLAYER!!!!!! back in the good old days...I like his work with Phantamos also...Talk about a strange and unusual band...Mike Patton makes some of the strangest sounds I've ever heard come out of the human body...If i was gonna start a Speed Metal Band, Dave may be my first choice...

FYI, it is not Dave Lombardo who is playing on the studio version of the song DittoHead but Paul Bostaph who drummed on the Divine Intervention (1994) album.

thanks for uploading this stuff, but somehow I cant appreciate lombardo`s playing anymore, there is really nothing that special about him except the very fast double bass and some ideas, but in general his playing is too raw for me

he say's himself, that he's never been to school for drumming, and that he stopped taking lessons, because he was tired or learning all the rudiments (or somethin like that). he probably has some method of remembering just like a bunch of other drummers that dont know how to read music.
Marilyn
09-13-2005, 12:09 AM
Yeah, I suppose that would make sense. I just thought it would be better (?) that he should try and learn the technique of reading music or tab. But I suppose whatever works for him.
The end result being: he is a great drummer!

Listening to dave has changed my style completely with slayer im hooked on metal now and i think dave is an exellent drummer at what he does his double bass is amazing it sounds so amazing i made an audio file of his solo from angel of death paul bohstaph was good but dave owns all and his autobiography sounds so much like my life its crazy but hes amazing the speed the precision the energy, the power is phenominal i like his style but there are other drummers that are good also but dave affects me alot and from the interviews ive seen and the stuff i watched om my Reign in blood dvd, dave seems to be a funny cool guy and he seems to have lots of respect

Unless he's talking about Kerry King, in which case he might just accuse the guy of having a brain the size of a hazelnut... That's a champion of an interview. Try to track it down, there's a video of Fantomas being interviewed on german channel WAH2. Very funny, but maybe a little painful if you're a Slayer fan.

He was awesome in Slayer, and some of that avant garde chaos he pulls off with Patton and Fantomas really shows freakish ability.

Dave is a huge inspiration to me and my drumming. His raw talent is very unique and he can come up with the sickest s*** on the toms. His book Power Grooves is alright; the drumming in the end tracks is pretty insane.

Dave was and is easily one of my biggest influences in drums. Ive never been amazed as i was when i first saw his drum video on drummerworld a few years ago.. Even though i have seen some more technical videos recently. He fits in perfectly with Slayer, one of the most energetic bands merged with insanely energetic drummer. Sorry if ive repeated existing points from other posters. It must be said hes rather legendary.

Honestly, I never really liked Slayer, even during my big "thrash metal" phase as a teenager. I always thought that Dave overplayed on the Slayer stuff, which I suppose is exactly what attracts certain types of drummers to that kind of music. But....his playing with Fantomas is undeniable, in my opinion. Very clean, very versatile, and incredibly creative at times. Of course, the quality of the musicians he is surrounded with in Fantomas makes a big difference, too.

I finally have got someone to download this for me, but a few of the link are down:

Thanks.

In 2004, I was on a business trip in Vegas. One of my employees knew that I was a diehard Slayer fan. He bought us tickets for a show at the LV HOB. Anyway, I didn't know that Dave was back in the band. I had perfect seats in the balcony (I am too old for that pit stuff) and then I saw him. I was screaming like I was 15 again.
He played the balstaph stuff so magnificantly! He is so animated behind the set.
Then, to top it off, they played the entire Reign in Blood album for the oncore.
My associate who came with me was freaking out that I went so crazy during the entire show!
Dave makes Slayer what it is. He really is irreplaceable.

In the world of metal this guy is a LEGEND, he may have been surpassed for speed these days but that was never what dave was totally about anyway, i went to see them back in 87 in england and is speed, power and endlessly inventive fills were amazing
i'm one of dave's biggest fans however he did go through a rough patch in the early 90's, dont care what anyone says on the seasons in the abyss tour he was definately below par(couldnt nail angel of death), and i was hugely dissapointed with his performance on decade of aggression( except chemical warfare which was excellent), in fact dave has said himself recently that he was very dissapointed with his playing on that record. i also believe that according to jeff hanneman dave's double bass on the album version of war assemble was doubled up because dave couldnt pull it off.
However dave has come back and hit form with avengeance, went to see slayer last year and dave was without doubt at least as good as he was in 86-87, nailing all his early stuff and bostaphs later work perfectly, and angel of death......well not only did he not miss a beat, he at least doubled the length of the solo at the end...brilliant, just wished they would release another live album now he's back to his best.

He's great (as an influence to the SPEED Metal dudes, as already said here... his biggest influences are probably the double-bass at the end-part of ANGEL OF DEATH and his fast-as-hell beats and hits of NECROPHOBIC, for these reasons). But his soloing at The Modern Drummer 2000 was kinda... uhhh ehhr "flat...", very UNinspirational, I'd say... there's nothing more one could say after watching Colaiuta at the same fest... Dave's good but certainly NOT a god... he's NOT THAT fast anymore... the bar was up-raised way too high by many xtreme metal drummers of today.. just a FACT... lightning-fast double-bass work is no Dave's sole privilege anymore... although I still dig his attitude and the fact the he's never took any formal musical education and played everything by the ears... he was also great in SLAYER for songs like SEASONS IN THE ABYSS, SILENT SCREAM, MANDATORY SUICIDE, WAR ENSEMBLE and all of his fast SPEED(!) Metal material with the band... - as much as with FANTOMAS and TESTAMENT... great drummer, but certainly not a "Master". Just wanted you to know that I'm also an old SLAYER fanATIC... that kind of maniac who memorizes every single note and lyrics of every single song of the band... :p
p.s. Oh... and just to remind you... Dittohead is NOT Dave's song... it's a part of Paul Bostaph's EXCELLENT times in Slayer.. times of the excellent (drum-wise, and NOT just as such) DIVINE INTERVENTION, the HEAVY Diabolus In Musica and the violent God Hates Us All. They both (Dave-&-Paul) are highly ranked in my personal Metal book.

Dave was with Testament for only one album ( The Gathering, which was great), but he made quite an impression. My vote is for Slayer. The new album is said to be a mix between Seasons in the Abyss and God Hates us All. I have high hopes, and his work on "Cult", "Jihad", and "Eyes of the Insane" was nothing less than what I would expect from him.

Lol, I saw slayer with the unholly alliance tour July 3rd, and to be honest, on that kind of proffesional level. I've never seen a band so untight. Solo's we're pretty much just anywhere, and some, er,...most... fills we're completely out of place. At one point near the end of a song where they decided to do a "big noise and crazy stuff sequence" it sounded like pretty much like a bunch of nobody's wailing at their instruments to make noise all at once. It was down to the point where me and my brother would just stare at eachother and start laughing everytime things we're completely out of place, and when the show was over, my stomach was cramped.
I don't know if these guys we're having a bad day or something ( a really really bad day ), but I completely lost any appreciation I had or might have had for this band. And I was even more dissapointed with Lombardo, I thought with all the hype this guy had been getting, he would have been alot more impressive.
I'm probably going to be hated in this thread, but i'm only saying my oppinion.
p.s For those of who you haven't seen the show yet, and are going, and aren't used to slayer, don't worry, Mastodon, Lamb of god, and children kicked ass ( I don't even like children and it was damn good live ).

I'm one of dave's biggest fans however he did go through a rough patch in the early 90's, dont care what anyone says on the seasons in the abyss tour he was definately below par (couldn't nail angel of death), and i was hugely dissapointed with his performance on decade of aggression (except chemical warfare which was excellent), in fact dave has said himself recently that he was very dissapointed with his playing on that record. i also believe that according to jeff hanneman dave's double bass on the album version of war assemble was doubled up because dave couldnt pull it off.
Dave admitted to this on the video provided in the 1st entry of this thread. He mentioned that he was having trouble with his double bass during the Seasons in the Abyss tour. This was because Dave was sitting too high. Once he lowered his throne, he was able to regain some control. Here's a recent performance of "War Ensemble":

Saw Dave at a PASIC clinic a couple years ago, kinda sad, only about 50 people for the clinic.Awesome player, got his auto! Dave will be the featured/cover interview next month in Modern Drummer.
Thats crazy, i would give anything to see one of his clinics!.
He is much more than a double bass innovator-he has flair and style round the kit-seasons in the abyss has some of the best rock fills!. War Ensamble is great-he emulated gunfire and military sounds with his brass snare. I wish i was Latin!.

Dave Lombardo really is a legend in his own time! The driving force behind Slayer, not to mention his other work with Testament and Fantomas... His drumming on "The Director's Cut" by Fantomas is awesome and you get to hear completely different styles of drumming including metal which is so cool to hear one of the worlds best metal drummers do... mix it up, be unpredictable, surprise his fans.
What a treat we're all in for with the reunion of Lombardo and Slayer for a brand new studio album ehh!! Now THAT is going to be mental! Now that's exciting!!! Bring it on!

I have a lot of respect for Dave Lombardo. It seems when drummers like Lars Ulrich seem not as good as they used to be during their reigning days, Lombardo seems to get better and better. I'm not saying Ulrich sucks, but Lombardo is just better.
