I just built this snare. It's a 10 ply Keller shell with 10 ply reinforcing rings 14" x 5 1/4".
A friend of mine did the paint job, this is not a wrap.He also bought this snare from me.
The lugs I designed and made a prototype by myself, and then had a machine shop manufacture them for me in stainless steel.
No more rust or flaking chrome here.
The snare also has a Trick strainer, and I used Puresound snare wires.
It also sounds really nice.

WOW, that's a nice-looking drum! I'd be interested to hear how the reinforcement rings affect the sound. The lugs are awesome too, especially since you designed them yourself! They kind of remind me of the Yamaha Nouveau lugs, and I'm sure they make head changes really easy. Keep this up and I might ask you to build me one! :)

That snare looks amazing. Great job on the lug fabrication, I think those would look great on a steel snare or a black brass snare drum. It bet that thing rips. Did you make money off it or did you break even with the cost and labor?

No I didn't make any money of that drum, I sold it as Endorsement deal at material cost.
The lugs were insanely expensive due to that I only let them make 100 of them.
The snare has an amazing crack, i also think that Keller shells have gotten a bad rep.
I remember back in the day when DW used Keller shells everybody said they are the best, now everybody looks down on them. Keller shells are really good sounding shells.
I also just ordered me a Vaughncraft steambent 1 piece shell so I can hear the difference.

Yes I do, I build snare drums and make drumsticks.
I am not sure about the price yet, due to the high price that I paid to a machine shop to make those lugs.

What a beautiful paint job. Is that one shade of blue all round and is the purple tint just reflection?
I think your lug design works well with the Trick strainer - both elements have a kind of industrial, assembled look to them.

It's a 10 ply Keller shell with 10 ply reinforcing rings 14" x 5 1/4"........
Wow, 10 ply with 10 ply hoops and die cast rims... sounds brittle. Why did you go so stiff? Just trying it out? The lugs are nice, do they hold tuning well? Does the threaded part of the lug 'swivel' between the two 45's? Did you use stainless tension rods?
I've gotten a couple bum keller shells. One was an 8 ply bought back in the early 80's. When I drilled it, I noticed a few of the plys weren't hard maple, actually pretty soft and stinky (in a nice way). The other was a 6 ply slightly out of round which prob was not kellers fault tho. Unless a drum co has high dollar molding machines, they're using Keller, which is about 90% of the co's out there. I 'think' (think- meaning I don't know for sure) partly what led DW to get their own molds together, was they needed to better justify the prices they charge for their drums, along with getting a better handle on QC, it might have actually cut costs too. If they were gonna be 'real' about being a drum co and out there flaunting it, they pretty much 'had' to.

To answer some of the questions.
Yes, it is a tint reflection, it depends how the light shines on the drum.
The industrial look was exactly what we wanted to achieve, the guy who bought the snare said, I want an industrial look to it. So he did the paint job accordingly to the lugs.
No the tension rods are not stainless, and yes the tension will swivel with regular steel rims, they don't swivel yet with die cast hoops, I have to make some changes to the lug.
That whole design of the lug is still in the so called R&D phase.
And sorry, I have no sound samples, I received the lugs back from the machine shop, and showed them to a customer, and he bought the drum right after that.

That is beautiful. Make a couple more of those, and you've got yourself quite the business. Ever consider it?

Thanks, and yes, I already do build snare as a side business, and sometimes I post my work here to get some input, but I do not plaster my website on every post I do, because I am here as a drummer, and to enjoy the community as such.

i love these lugs on the snare in the avatar! wow. i saw the bigger pic of it in your website. this is one unique drum. great work! and best of luck, i know drum building as a business is not what you might call a "piece of cake"... your drums stand out, unlike the endless custom companies out there that use all the same parts from the same suppliers. way to go!

Thanks man, Yes I am trying to hard to have a little something different, because I do not build my own shells, I thought I have to find another way to get that custom look, without beeing just called an drum assembler. I do not think there is something wrong with that, I just think it is very difficult to sell in that already very busy market.
now that's a beautiful drum. i'd like to build a kit someday when i have the money
cool lugs
