Someone had mentioned starting "the best Bonham set" thread. I guess its really hard to say any one is the best, when they are all relatively the same, and all loved by their owners. But it would be cool for everyone whose got a Bonham setup, to post a pic of their kit here. So here we go...

Really? Maybe its because i live in PA. it seems everyone here has a huge double bass setup. A lot of the drummers here are idiots and think smaller, more basic sets are for pussies...

What is so exclusive about it? I ordered mine as a shell pack from Midwest Percussion for $1929.95, and got to choose the exact color I wanted. Wrapped drums are a little bit cheaper, but more durable, that's why I chose wraps. If you're talking about the stainless steel limited addition set...YOUR THE MAN!

If you order through a Ludwig dealer you should be able to get any size that Ludwig offers in any configuration. My kit is not a "Bonham Kit" it wasn't a package deal. I ordered the sizes and color that I wanted.

k, I just registered for the drummerworld discussion forum and I have a few questions I hope to have answered eventually.
QUESTION #1
Does anyone else have the setup where they have 2 floortoms? Because when I put I have two floortoms on my set, John Bonham Style. It just makes it more strenous and hard to turn my body all the way toward my the last floor tom.
QUESTION #2
What personally do you guys think sounds better? New Beat or Quick Beat? I have a Quick Beat.
QUESTION #3
What is the difference between all the different wood types that drumsets are made out of? I have Maple.
QUESTION #4
Can anyone really do what John Bonham does on "Moby dick" with one pedal? and Who can? Cause I have been working on it and I can only partially do the double pedal sound with one pedal thing. I do a weird heel-toe action...
That is all for now, But if any of you could answer any of my questions I would greatly appreciate it.

I have two drums to my left, their just not floor toms. But I did it for the same purpose. I can reach them fine. Try backing up the throne a little bit and move it a little to the left. [I'm supposing your right handed]
I don't have New Beats or Quick Beats. And your in the wrong thread.
All I know about woods is that mahogany is lowest, maple's in the middle, and birch is at the top. Also in the wrong thread. I tried a thread about this and someone gave me this link.
http://drumdojo.com/tech/shelldesign.htm
I bet someone could play as fast as Bonzo with their right foot. What I don't think that person sould do is have the groove and the style like Bonham did+ the insane foot speed. Even if you could do that all together, your cheating. You have to create your own style.

Answers:
Q1
I do have my set up like bonhams (and like 3957887386 other drummers) with the 2 floor tom set up and no i dont have problems with turning my body. In fact i dont turn my body....i keep it straight and just turn my right arm. Youll adapt to it eventually
Q2.
I personally like the quick beats better. I do not own them but i like them better than new beats because they have more crisp and more defined sound to me.
Q3.
All different shell types produce more darker, more brighter, more louder, more softer sounds.
Maple:
Maple is a general overall warm sounding product, it can reproduce frequencies of the drum fairly well across the spectrum.
Mahogany:
True mahogany from USA or Honduras will have about a 20% increase in low frequency resonance over the maple drum, mid and high frequencies will be the same from a reproduction point of view, but because the Mahogany has the 20% low end increase, the perceived tone is warmer.
Birch:
Birch is a very dense tough wood, blond in color that tools well. It will have about a 10% loss in reproduction of low end compared to Maple and about a 20% increase in the high end, with the mid range remaining about the same, so the Birch kit will definitely be a “harder” and “brighter” sounding kit
Poplar:
Poplar is derived from fast growing straight medium hardwood trees and is a less expensive alternative to Birch and Maple.
Q4
People have definatly master bonhams foot speed in every song....easily....Can you say JoJo Mayer?? And in the studio recording theres really nothing goin on with his foot speed that is really hard to master....his live solo is much more advanced

As far as playing with two floor toms there are many different things you can do to make it more comfortable. Some people say that sitting higher makes it more comfortable to hit that second floor tom. Or you can tilt the drums toward you more which some say helps. Personally I like my floor toms flat as possible and instead of having them in a direct line move the second floor tom out a little bit. By doing this it feels more natural rolling down the kit for me.

With a two floor tom set-up, here are some tips and tricks:
-You should be turning your torso to hit the drums, it's good to face what you are hitting.
-If you find this uncomfortable, don't change seat height, which is probably perfect for you the way it is. Don't change the seat positioning, which is probably perfect for you the way it is. You should be able to play the drum comfortably by simply moving the drum. Try moving it away from you more, as opposed to behind you. Ex. Face your kit from the front. Looking at your drum, think of moving it to the left as opposed to fowards.
-Don't give up. It can take me eternities to set stuff up to my comfort, but in the end it's all worth it! Your comfort is number one, as it allows you to play your best, with the less effort possible!

Very well said. I've torn down and rebuilt my kit more time than I can remember, spending huge amounts of time just stitting on the throne visualising the way my apendages want to naturally flow. Setting up your kit comfortably and efficiently takes a lot of time and trial and error, and is a very personal process. And totally worth it. It definately helped me improve my drumming.
That being said, IMO a properly set up Bonham style kit is extremely effiicient and comfortable to play.

I agree completely. This style set up also used by Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Mitch Mitchell and countless other legendary jazz and rock drummers, is a very efficient set up. When I decided to go with this configuration, about 15 years ago, it was after a few years of building up and stripping down my kit that I finally realized that I was very comfortable playing this set up. There is nothing obstructing my full range of motion, everything is spread out and very comfortable.

Toms are all 6 ply blue/olive badge. Kick is a 6 ply large keystone badge. Clear maple finish will be the end result. 1st time I've had all the pieces set up as a kit.

The kit really has potential. I think the clear maple finish is a good choice, very classy. I really got a kick of how your floor toms are upside down so that you can get them lower, I have never seen that done before, interesting. The bass drum is a beauty!

I have felt strips on the batter side and the resonant side. The front head is tuned higher then the batter side. All in all the drum is tuned a lot higher then one would think to get the full round sound of the drum. It has a nice big boomy sound. It is the way Bonham tuned his bass drum, in fact all of his drums were tuned with this method. Check out the Bonham page on this site and they really go into depth on his tuning method.

I also have the strips on the batter and resonant side. Both heads are tuned way up, mine are probably tuned closer to each other than "Bonham's" tuning. I don't have the coated heads, but I like the batter very firm. Nice tone to it, and still sounds HUGE! When I wear out the Ludwig heads I'll try the coated 2 ply/1 ply combo and see how that goes.

how do you tune it up real high with the felt causing a "boxy" sound? i have a 14x24 rogers and it seems to only like medium to medium-low tuning. (approximately 1/2 to 3/4 turn on the batter lugs, 1 full turn on the reso.) it always loses it's fullness and gets real dry and dead if i go higher. is it the tension of the felt or what? approximately how many full turns of the tension rods do you go on both heads?
thanks.

My Rogers Big R, Silver Metallic are from 1977. Purchased new in Nov. 1977, bought by me from the original owner in Nov. 1979. I still have them. Still play them out. The other set in the pic is a Dayton virgin 20" bass, that I rescued from a horribly botched recover, and recovered in untouched Rogers 1977 Silver Metallic. That set is 20-12-16. I am using DW cymbal stands and Tama Iron Cobra Pedals.

I tried to post a picture of my set but it says my photos all take up too much space to post. I'm rather computer illiterate so I don't know how to get around it. Anyway, picture the kit he used from '69-'70, the natural maple one shown in the Royal Albert Hall portion of the DVD. Now picture the stain is a dark, rich mahogany color. Now picture the guy behind it is about 1/1,000 as good, 1/10 as drunk, and has no moustache. That's what my kit looks like.

I wish. They are the reissues, about 3 years old, they don't have reinforcement rings or anything. I believe they are 6-ply, although I'm not positive about that. What I meant is that they look exactly like the kit Bonham played from '69-'70 except for the color. It's a stain instead of a wrap, like the kit he has, it's just a much darker color. It also has the 14"x12" top tom and 8 lugs, some of the reissue kits I've seen have the 14"x10" top tom, like when he moved on to the green sparkle and vistalites. From what I have seen they all have 8 lugs now though, whereas his green sparkle and vistalites kits the top toms each had 6.

I'm thinking of buying a vintage set, of Bigger than Bonham sizes! I really like the look of them. they are 26x16, 15x13, 18x16, 20x18. They are from 1986 in a nice white finish. What do you think?
I really want some bonham sized ludwig drums.
Thanks for making this cool thread btw.

I ordered my heads from my local music store, I got them in about three days. Ludwig makes the Power Collar heads in 26" which is their answer to the Power Stroke heads. Remo makes the Powerstroke in 26" but I don't know if Evans makes the E-Mad head in that size. But I would check with your local music store.

I would go with the Coated Remo Emperor or the Evans coated g-2, same drum head basically. I would also stay away from pre muffled drum heads for your bass drum, Bonham just used felt strips to muffle his. Personally I think thats what sounds best for oversized bass drums. On the resonant side he would just use a smooth white Ludwig logo head, sometimes with a felt strip sometimes without.

I've just ordered a new custom kit from a guy based here in the uk, called Alan Gilby of Richmo Drums. In about three weeks, I'll have my dream kit, a 4 piece in red sparkle finish, sizes 28x18, 15x12 and 18x16. Obviously, I've got to have the remo coated emperor batters, with coated ambassadors resonant side. Yum! What a monster. I'm gonna go and reinforce my walls with steel now! lol! I CAN'T WAIT!!!!

Haha! Almost. I've always wanted a bonham-esque kit, and being 14, well, they don't come cheap, so i built up my old mapex to a big double bass kit over 3 years and, then sold it to afford the custom Richmos. I'll try and post some pictures once i receive them. I've now changed the toms to 14x12, and 16x16. I'll order the 18" later this year. The only problem with pictures is fitting the bass drum in the frame!

I posted this recently in the "Your Gear" section but I just got my 26" bd on Tuesday. Until about a week ago I didn't even know Rogers made that size. Anyway, now my kit is this:
'68 Rogers in butcher block finish
10x14
16x16
16x18
(and a matching 14x24)
early 70s Rogers in New England white finish
14x26
'78 Ludwig alloy Supra
6.5x14
My plan is to re-wrap the whole kit in blue onyx, hopefully in a few months, and then I'll probably sell the 24" bd. I had my first band practice with the 26" last night. To my surprise it didn't feel entirely different from the 24". I sort of feel like a little kid sitting behind it, though. I'm still working on just the right tuning but I've got a coated Emperor/smooth white Ambassador with 3" felt strips on either side and it sounds pretty decent. Big yet controlled. I just switched from 2.5" felt to 3". It almost muffles it too much but I'm still playing with the placement.
So far I like it. It's a beast.

I KNOW this is probably a stupid observation but when you have the rack tom on a snare stand doesnt it put a lotta distance between the rack and the floor[s] if you wanna go round the kit? I know its what you get used to but there seems to be some serious distance on some of these 'bonham rigs', and when I've seen the dvds of JB he has the snare stand as well as the rack fitting on the bass drum, is that for added stability or didnt he trust Luddies hardware??

The big misconception is that Bonzo always used a snare stand for his tom and that is false. The only kit he used a snare stand for the tom was his first Ludwig kit which was the maple kit. He used a Rogers swiv-o-matic mount plus a snare stand I feel for added stability because the tom was a 14"x 12". On the rest of his kits he used the Ludwig rail mount with no snare stand so I feel he did trust the Ludwig hardware. Then on his last kit which was the stainless steel kit he used the standard Ludwig "T" mount. With a snare stand there is a lot of distance between the tom and the floor toms, I say it's a personal preference. On my kit I mount the tom off of my cymbal stand which is really comfortable for me.

Did you dampen the batter side at all? What heads do you have on it? And, last but not least, what kind of tension do you have on the heads?
The Levee Breaker
06-24-2007, 02:12 PM
To rogers_68, No i didn't dampen the batter side, because i like the feel of the natural resonance of the head. I use coated ambassadors on both sides at the moment and it sounds great. The heads are quite highly tensioned with the batter being slightly lower in pitch, to get the natural low end sound from the drum. Because, if you think about it, there is a large amount of air to move in that space, so you want to move it quickly to get a nice thump sound, but you can tune high, because the larger size of the drum means you still get all of the low end, and that was the trick to bonham's tuning. Trust me on this, it works!
Hope that answers your q's!

Stinkin' sound guys...! There's one sound guy that I've worked with a lot over the course of several years and he's learned how to handle my bass drum (no hole, not overly ringy but certainly not over-muffled) and he's told me many, many times to tune how I want and he'll deal with it. He says that a good sound guy can make it work using mic placement, EQ, et cetera.

I agree completely a good sound guy should be able to handle any situation that they have to deal with. If we had our own sound guy it probably wouldn't be an issue because they could just set their board to fit us. Every once in awhile I will get a sound guy where my drums aren't even an issue, but mostly I get these guys that are so used to miking drummers that just muffle the hell out of their drums and they come to me and they are lost they don't know what to do.

I know, I know. I'm not a sound engineer by any means but even I can figure out that if you back the mic off about an inch it takes a ton of ring out of the PA system, and even I can figure out that one can take a little low end out on the sound board if needed. Most guys are looking for a "thump-you-in-the-chest" sound and I don't at all. I want a drum sound, not an effect.

Now, I've researched this so here goes; with the exception of the stainless steel reissue all the JB tribute kits have the rack tom on a snare stand with a virgin bass. I've sat thru the Zep dvd, song remains the same AND looked thru 'thunder of drums' and the only kit that Bonham used with a virgin bass and rack on a snare stand was the natural maple kit he had in '69. Even the vistalites had a tom mount! Should they be selling the reissue kits as 'bonham/zep' kits, when he didn't have the setup that they're selling??

That is something that I have never understood either. Even the maple kit didn't really have a virgin bass drum because he did have a tom mount and the snare stand. But anytime there is a "Bonham" reissue kit they always have the tom on a snare stand. It drives me nuts!

And we can go 1 step further. The tom mount on that kit is a Rogers swivomatic. (good photo on page 39 of "Drum presents Traps the Art of Drumming" magazine with John Bonham on the cover). Typical modification a lot of Ludwig players did. But let's face it, if someone wants a tom holder, they can go out and buy one. Drill 4 holes. Done. If I was gonna mount a 14x10 or a 15x12 off my 26x14, I'd probably use the DW rail consolette. I'd rather have a virgin kick myself. Easier to drill holes into a virgin kick than un-drill holes (re-virginize) a kick with a factory mount.

Isn't the bass mounted ride awesome! It's so much more comfortable for me. For years I used a boom stand to try to bring the ride where I wanted it and it was a pain. I like this set up much better, plus one less stand to haul around!
Did you dampen the batter side at all? What heads do you have on it? And, last but not least, what kind of tension do you have on the heads?
Hey could you post pics of your kit again? The photobucket link doesn't seem to work anymore and i'm dying to see your set.
...if Mini Me was to play the drums, these could be his Bonham kit.

When Bonham played Moby Dick at Royal Albert Hall he used the Maple Finish Ludwigs. The sizes on those were 14x12, 16x16, 18x16, 26x14, and a 14x6.5 Supraphonic snare

well then you suck, just kidding. but honestly bro, if you dont like it, dont look at it. not being rude, but seriously. and by the way, it's really bothering me so i just have to say it. bonham sets are either 13x9, 14x10, 14x12, or 15x12, 16x16, 16x18, 26x14, and 14x6.5? i mean great if you have a bonham tom config, but the tama hyperdrive isnt exactly the "BIG" bonham sound. just saying. it's just bothering me. a lot.

I could careless if anyone else really likes it or not. I remember being young and wanting a huge drum set with loads of cymbals. I grew out of that. Tastes change as you get older, and more tired of lugging all of that stuff around. I get more enjoyment from this set, than any of the many I've owned over the years. This set was my dream set, less the paiste symphonic that I'll never own. If I ever buy another set, you can be sure it will only be a shell pack, and an amber vistalite at that. They look good, sound good, and will be worth more later down the road than an import. Bonham was a talented drummer, if owning this set inspires me to become a better drummer, it's worth every penny.

Hello everyone, I have a few questions about the Ludwig kits.
I ordered my green sparkle in Bonham sizes a few weeks ago, but can someone tell me what the standard front bass drum head is that they deliver with bassdrums?
And I also wonder if Ludwig still sells those bassdrum front heads in WHITE (:D) with the SMALL, MODERN (so not vintage like Ringo Starr) Ludwig logo on TOP, as seen on John Bonham's bassdrum in Royal Albert Hall 1970 (Led Zeppelin dvd) & the picture that is attached.
Thanks in advance guys

In response to your question Crydevil, no they don't still make them. I believe they stopped making those a while ago, now they just use the bigger labels, which I'm sure you will agree are just plain ugly. However, you can buy a sticker online somewhere, most likely ebay. The one you want is 1"x6", not any bigger. I believe it's the size used on Bonzo's '69-'70 Natural Kit.
Hope this helps you.

Or, you can download a pic of the logo, send it by email to your local sign shop, and they will print on for you without a background, just the letters only. (it comes on a template for lining it up, then a removable backing peels off, leaving just the letters) (about $12.00)
I've done this with a Sonor and a Yamaha logo, and it looks like factory.

I dig that set bro.....I recently bought a Gretsch Club Rock set on a whim. I like it but can't decide what heads I like. I've switch the g1's to pinstripes....I'd like something in between. Actually the small tom sounds pretty good with the G1's but the floor toms are a little boingy. The pinstripes deaden the floor toms a little too much. Lucky I got the 18" pinstripe for 5 bucks. Are those clear emperors on the tops of your drums?
Someone had mentioned starting "the best Bonham set" thread. I guess its really hard to say any one is the best, when they are all relatively the same, and all loved by their owners. But it would be cool for everyone whose got a Bonham setup, to post a pic of their kit here. So here we go...

While I love looking at Bonham kits, I cannot get comfortable playing on one. Ergonomicly its not very practicle. I would much rather two toms up front and one floor tom. Truth be told the perfect setup is three up front with two floor toms. Then you can pull off anything.

Been a long time away from here, sorry for the LATE reply. The heads in that pic are the factory Ludwig medium clears. I switched to coated emperors on top of coated ambassadors a long time ago. Crydevil,
Glad to see you finally got your kit. How's the RC working out? Where did you manage to find one? I thought of doing that, but I was too nervous with the 14x12, thought it may be too heavy, or not fit as well as the 14x10. I like the 14x12, and putting it on the snare stand is no biggie. Your kit looks awesome, and I like the Ludwig on the drum head, it looks more "correct" for the Zep set.
Now all you need is Bonzo's symbol on the head.

The RC is great, no wonder Bonham used it to hold up against all the force he put into his drumming, this thing is unbreakable ! :D (which is exactly what it was made for xD)
But yeah, it's awesome.
I got it on eBay, but it was in a sort of bad condition, so I sent it to LVDC who cleaned it up (which I am still - and will always be - very grateful for :D), and replaced one of the RC parts with one of his own (which was in near perfect shape), so I would have a functioning RC :). So you could say I owe LVDC alot :D.
About the 14x12, I haven't experienced any problems with it, not because of it's weight, nor because of it's size :). The sizes are really easy to handle & tune IMO.
And the head, well... :D. Since almost every drummer who sees this kit would recognize it as a Bonham kit, I'm gonna skip the emblem, to maybe still try and maintain the personal touch of the kit xD.
But anyway, thanks man !

Yeah, a lower tom might be easier to play, but when you place it low, it has to come on the left side of the bass-drum (if you play right-handed ofcourse :D), and it would be pushed more to the left, the lower you go.
And since I like my tom right in front of my snare, and my snare pretty close above my pedal, I don't really like the tom being pushed to the left :D.
I really don't like tom stands or cymbal-stand clams for toms. It works for smaller bassdrums, but for big ones like these it's trouble for me :).

Well there are ways to be able to place it low and still be pretty far on the rail mount. Either by pushing it back away from the drummers seat, or by rotating the ratchet part so it is underneath and just reverse the L arm tom to go with it. Just gotta make sure it isn't touching the bass drum.
But you have the Bonham thing goin on right now and doing that would kind of "mess" with it.

Indeed, you're right :D.
But my post regarding this was actually meant for a situation with a tom stand, which I should have mentioned, my bad :D.
But yeah indeed, you are completely right, although I like it fairly high, and put the ratchet almost straight vertically, and also a bit to the right on my bar, which places the tom itself as horizontal as possible :D.

So this last weekend I went down to North Carolina (from Wisconsin), we break down in the mountains of West Virginia, and the name of the guy that hauled us to the next town was John Bonham, no lie. I figured that this would be as good a place as any to put that little tale.
...it doesn't meet the prerequisite Bonzo sizes, but here is my one up two down.

here is an update. 13x9 instead of the 12x8, I also moved the 17"xtreme to my left, and added an 18" fast china on the right.
This is one tom and two cymbals more than I normally play, but I had to do something to spice up the old same old same old.

mine without the splashes and the high tom would look like a john bonham set i guess. and another floor tom to be precise... :) now it is more like a bill cobham influenced one.

Player kit, finally finished. All shells are Bonham-era 3-ply Ludwigs with re-rings, just like they should be. Paul Montineri restored all the edges and recovered them to match.
Sizes: 10x14, 16x16, 16x18, 14x26. Heads are the correct Remos.
Since sound trumped originality on this one, I went ahead and put modern spurs on it and put the 10x14 on a RIMS mount.
And the sound? Well, it sounds like it should, and that's all that needs to be said.

Idiophone that kit is absolutely stunning. One of the nicest I've seen on this board. Very classy and it must sound superb.it reminds me of Paicey's from "Made in Japan" Maybe I'm just partial to 26" Bass Drums in Silver Sparkle with that 70's vintage logo. I would love to see more pics with the cymbals included Paiste's I hope Awsome!

I don't have the correct cymbals, but I'm a studio engineer/drum tech rather than a player. I used to keep cymbals with my kits, but they kept getting cracked by bashers. Lesson learned....
Thanks again!

It was always my contention that the vistalites could sound so much better with something besides a cs dot. Are you useing clear emperors?

It works! I have to muffle it in addition to the Aquarian SK. It's way too loud in the house BUT still plows through even with a pillow in there.

I've got the 28" Wuhan wind gong. It's the biggest wind gong I could find. Very reasonably priced too. I found it googling, I didn't find it through any of the main big name places like musician's friend. I took a chance and ordered through a smaller company, lots of them out there that carry it, just have to shop around.

Hiya,
My kit (shells only) cost me around € 2500 (Euros !). Maybe a little less than that... Keep in mind that the kit is Classic Maple series, so Accent should be a lot cheaper, respectively.
That's how much I paid in Belgium, but I don't know if they have different prices for the US or other countries though... ^^
Greets !

Bonham means 26 kick, 13, 14, or 15 rack, 16x16 18x16 14x 6.5....period.
Any thing else is just one up, two down.
Yep. Not too hard to comprehend either. I'd like to add 'single pedal only' to the criteria as well.
Chaps my ass seeing some Axis double kick on a Bonham kit, ha ha ha

Exactly, double bass is alright if thats you're thing but I think double bass takes away from the Hi-Hat IMO I also think a early Bonham style kit would be 26,14,18,14 x 6.5.
I like 4-piece LOL, Bonham played a 4-piece on LZ I but with a 24" bd instead of a 26" that was LZ II when he added another floor-tom.

Ludwig 24"?
What about the tom? 13" or 14" on LZ?This was just the first album before he got his Ludwig endorsement with help from Carmine Appice the tom he used was a 13" x 9" then he went with a 15" x 12" with 2-26" bass drums until Jimmy Page complained he couldn't. hear nothing but Bass drums on stage so he back to only 1 bass drum from then on.
he went back to a 14" x 10" tom until the Stainless Steel kit in 1976 or 77? I think it was 1977 but not sure which year then he went back to the 15" x 12" tom.

You can get them on Ebay for like 6 bucks each.
