i used to play in my bare feet... but one day i came to band practice with my work shoes on and i forgot to take them off and started jammin' and i was like whoa... these shoes are great!... i think i like them so much because they have a lot of grip... they're just some type of new balance shoes that i bought for work so i wouldnt slip around on the butter that got on the floor (i worked at a movie theatre).. and i love playing in them!

Puma classic Suedes. Light and flexible.
They look better than the wrestling/driving shoes and they don't make you look like a hillbilly. (Which is what playing barefoot makes you look like)
Ahem, I meant: "In my opinion, they make you look like a hillbilly" ;)

I've found Chuck Taylors (on the advice of Jojo Mayer) to be really excellent drumming shoes. Slide technique and various other foot techniques are very easy to play in them. I can play comfortably barefoot, with socks, with mountain boots (I went through an experimental phase), light soled trainers, thicker soled running shoes, Doc Martens, Sandals, but nothing has ever quite been as comfortable or consistently good as my Chucks (black, low-top).
Knevil, those are the same shoes that Thomas Lang wears right? I like his... they're red. In the videos at least.

Knevil, those are the same shoes that Thomas Lang wears right? I like his... they're red. In the videos at least.
Actually, they're just the basic Puma classic "Suede" sneaker that's been around forever. I've seen Lang's shoes and I believe he mentioned that they are driving shoes. If you look on Puma's website, they have a section for Motorsports so it should be in there.
My problem is that I have extra wide feet and I can't get the Pumas in wider sizes. After a few hours of playing my left foot (apparently it's a little bigger than my right) starts to hurt. I was recently diagnosed with fallen arches and now I've got to start taking better care of my stuipid feet. I need a sneaker like the Puma that I can get in a wider size. Light, flexible and with some decent support. And cool looking too, can't forget that.
Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe I'll check out the Chuck Taylor's.

I like my thin soled vans for playing in if we're somewhere that requires shoes, otherwise I prefer playing in my socks
SANDALS! then you get to see my pretty toes!!
Nah just kidding.
I like playing barefoot most. Partly because I'm so accustomed to it when practicing at home. But for shoes, I love any kind of flat soled shoes. I think they help me with the heel toe a little...

wow...didn't think I'd be getting this many responses to my wierd thread..
I've heard good things about playing barefoot, but for one, it's often cold, and it really doesn't look all that good...
the reason I LOVE speedcats is because they're really thin and light, so it's like you're playin barefoot, and they're immensely comfortable for walking anywhere
plus they look awesome with jeans and anything else, but I don't really want to get into fashion taste (that's for another thread at another time)
Note: very similar to Thomas Lang's

I've been playing barefoot ever since I can remember. I wanna try socks, then shoes again to see if I've been doing it for the right reasons. I started having the problem of the pedals getting slick and hard to double, so I picked up one of the Grip Peddler from a local shop and tried it out. It helped out alot! Anyone else ever tried these?

Sorry guys..and (girls) I just can't resist. Really tho... I never thought much about what type of shoes I should wear while playing. Don't really like barefoot though. Seems like I have to put much more force into the kick and hat pedals and it really throws me off on timing compared to regular tennis shoes that I'm used to.

Knevil, I feel you on the wide feet. I have short, but very wide feet so finding shoes to fit lengthways can be a real pain. The Chucks are great shoes but if it's hot my feet swell and rub the sides a little so I've had a couple of small blisters. I really like them though.
The Pumas look nice too though, have to consider the pricing of these things. I thought our friend Gene played with New Rocks.. even bigger. But you have to respect those ankles.

Just lately it's been Emerica Heritic 2's, before that I was in some Circa's (I forget what they were) and before that I've done most brands of skateboarding shoe, flip flops, bare foot, socks... just about everything. I don't find it makes a great deal of difference to my performance what I wear on my feet. Strange really.

i play with what ever shoes i have on, unless they are boots... any tennis shoe really works good as long as it has grip.. but i have noticed that my new Macbeth London II shoes are really well adapted to playing.. i get alot of good feedback from the pedal... the grip works wonders on these shoes.. so for now id go with them, but i do love the old adidas classic world cup series shoes...

Yeah I woudln't mind an explination about the wax... That would work really well, except quite messy.
I play berefoot 99% of the time, but the only couople times I have played with runners (joggers/sneakers whatever YOU want to call them) I have played just as well, although the feel just isn't quite there.
I have got a pair of chuck taylors at home, might have to give it a go.

Those guys who like the barefoot feel but hate to walk around a club looking like a hillbilly and stepping in God-knows-what should try the Nike Free sneakers. They are training shoes designed to mimic the effects of running barefoot. They are my drumming shoe of choice now. They are so flexible that you can roll them up into a ball with one hand, super-light and breathable. I love 'em!
The DB drum shoes are good too but they're too narrow for my wide feet.

Chuck Taylors or Old School Vans, they seem pretty similar, but i tend to wear the chucks more often.
Surf Wax: Surfers put it on the deck of their surfboards for traction, you rub it on, it comes in bars (think soapbarish), and it's slightly sticky/grippy. http://www.stickybumps.com/ here's one manufactuer. I think a good deal of the interest in surfwax is that John from the MarsVolta uses it and drums barefooted.

I always record (and usually gig) barefooted, but at home I quite often play in socks if I've got them on, and lately I've found my heel-toe to be working better in socks, so maybe I'll stick with it. I've also played a fair bit in the Asics Gel running shoes that I wear most of the time I'm not at work, super comfy and flexible. I don't feel I have quite as much control though with them on, and my left foot tends to snag the adjacent hihat / kick pedal if I'm not careful (because I play with them *really* close to each other).

Barefoot or Socks...always.
But! As a kid I wanted to sell my idea for drummers shoes to a major shoe company, my favorite being Capezio (http://www.capeziodance.com/homepage.html). Capezio are dance shoes, ballet, jazz, tap...they come in many variety, but I always liked the leather sole, buffed smooth, and the lamb leather upper, which grips like a sock.
I would call them the Paradiddle....I even thought it would be cool to have a weight system that inserts at the ball of the foot...so different drummers could have differently weighted shoes is they like.

Wow, I looked to this thread for suggestions and checked out every one of them, so thanks!
My Old Man has size 8.5WW duckfeet. He wears either his wide Florsheim dress loafers for oldie gigs or Macgregor black leather(?) sneaks in wide from Kmart for everything else. That is IT. So boring. Those cool canvas slip-ons ride up and down, other thin-sole sneaks never come in wide, etc. I buy and buy sneaks for him to try, then return them all.
I did research here and elsewhere, looked at everything and had a semi-brainstorm. Water shoes! Neoprene ankle huggers! Dive booties! Looked at everything available on the 'nets, then yesterday went out to the giant sporting goods stores...nothing (and it's Florida!) Hit the last store, Play It Again Sports...nope.
Drove three parking spaces from PIAS to a Boating World store and there they were: all black, thin, wide nubby-grippy soles, "china"prene sides and huggy collar, mesh vamp, and even a velcro strap across the arch to snug them up, can't beat the price - 10 bucks on sale from $13. I got him a 9 to wear w/black socks and may get a second pair for him today.
He tested them last night and pronounced them excellent, and he'll wear them tonight to his gig in Cocoa Village! YAAAY!
Some of the cooler water shoes that I didn't buy, but may go for in future when I get some dough:

Keep smashin' - if it's too loud, you're too old.
I got the Adidas Sambas yesterday. They are very nice for playing and for just walking around.
God, im only 5"10 and I had to buy size 13 shoes...
I had size 13 thirty years ago and now I take size 15! My arches spread out later in life. I have a hard time finding the right shoe for drumming. Running shoes of any kind are just too big for most pedals. I have Axis Longboards on order (2 months) now. But for shoes, I'm looking into getting some snug fitting slippers or maybe even some divers' (those waterproof shoes) booties. Right now I'm using no shoes, but I'm only playing at home.

I have a pearl p122t-w pedal and play with just socks cuz i can't get the speed and precise-ness (if that's a word) with any shoes i have. my feet come off the pedals and move around when i play at around 160 bpm and up though, so i may need to get pedal grips...

Whatever I have on is alright for messing around, which includes Altama & Corcoran Combat Boots, but if I really want to get some action out of my foot I use Bowling Shoes. I'm the type that prefers a slippery sole and Bowling Shoes are designed to slide easily..........

any shoe's with a fairly flat bottom work the best.
anything with alot of grip can get caught up on some pedal footboards..

plus I swear to god I've seen at least 3 of those no talent thrashing retard goth drummers who have no respect for drumming and just "hit the drums" at 200 bpm with a double bass blast beat etc etc etc play in these ¬_¬

I normally play barefoot, its the most comfortable for me. Never had any problems with sliding off the pedals or anything. When I do play with shoes on though, its with my vans slips ons.

I think that toe piece actually locks to the bass pedal toe stop to increase speed. Kinda like the toe clips that long distance cyclists use. ha ha.

punkuzz900.
put those shoes on, then lets see you do 200bpm blasts like they do.

Cancelled the Longboards. I think the "Long" in Longboards means it takes a long time getting there once you've ordered - I cancelled, it was three months and counting and I was told I would get the pedals in a month or so.
I still haven't found a decent pair of shoes/slippers - still looking though.
The photo here is my foot on a Gibraltar 9611SD - they are nice big pedals, but here my foot is right up past the cam (sometimes my foot gets caught under the cam/beater) and it's still hanging off an inch or two at the back. It's a little better with no shoes on.
I have narrowed my choice of pedals to the Pearl Eliminator Powershifter - 2002b to go with my ever-growing - size 15 feet.

pumas. I definitely go for a shoe with a sole. i've used speedcats and various vans and they're terrible imo.
this is what i'm using now (minus the weird color scheme - mines just black/white/grey):

Don't you find a shoe "with a sole" is kind of klunkie? What are speedcats?
I was thinking of trying some kind of a firm fitting slipper or something like that.

Adidas Samba 85s. Comfortable for wearing with jeans, not too heavy for drumming with enough response so you can still feel the pedal. Only trouble is I have my foot high up the pedals, and the shoes are a little too wide for that part.

it doesn't feel klunkie to me at all, i'm sure if i was wearing those boots pictured above it definitely would be that way but i don't think my shoes have a thicker sole than any running shoe. shoes with soles tend to work better/easier for me when using double bass because i don't have to put as much work into it to where i could get tired faster. i don't have the greatest pedal either, so it really helps. Puma Speedcats are pretty flat shoes, since you want a firm fitting slipper you may want to look into them cause, to me at least, they feel slipper-ish but are still a regular shoe.
Only trouble is I have my foot high up the pedals, and the shoes are a little too wide for that part.
I have my foot high up on the pedals too................and I play heal down most of the time.......so you can see from the photo when I wear a running shoe it tends to get in the way as you can see from my earlier post here.

Puma classic Suedes. Light and flexible.
They look better than the wrestling/driving shoes and they don't make you look like a hillbilly. (Which is what playing barefoot makes you look like)
Ahem, I meant: "In my opinion, they make you look like a hillbilly" ;)
exactly, I play these exact shoes when I play. However most of the time I find its easier just to go barefoot.
