i'm looking for a new snare drum.
I was loooking at a custom Maryland Snare but now i'm trying to by a DW 9000 and a secon metal snare so i had to cut back back. Money is not a major issue but i'm trying not to have dry pockets. So, I'm wondering whether to snag the Black Panther http://www.blackpanthersnares.com/maple_birdeyes.asp OR the TAMA Starclassic Maple http://http://tama.com/drums/tama_link.asp?page=http://www.tamadrum.co.jp/world/products/snaredrums/regular/scm/index.html. I know i always say got to the store and try em' out but my local GC doesnt stock em'.

The Guitar Center I was in last week had that exact Starclassic snare (2nd hand) for $250!!!! That probably made it more interesting to me than it really is though. It isn't nearly as enticing at the normal $450 price.
I ended up buying a $199 Pork Pie Piglite. Money normally isn't an issue for me, but that bang-for-buck is just amazing.
I would probably choose the mapex in this case, and spend the rest of the money on something else.

that is difficult but all in all I would choose the Tama...the produce a great cracky, sensitive sound....I don`t know much about the Black Panther but also the Tama prices are nicer :-)
another great hi-end snare drum I can suggest is a Yamaha Maple Custom with those golden lugs (Vintage Maple) or Maple Customs Absolute. if you wanna have an even better Yammie, I can also recommend the Dave Weckl Signature Snare drum...similar to the absolutes but has a second snarebed and snares.....check out some...

The Black Panther is about $300 (maple shell with gold hardware) and the Starclassic is more like $450 (US internet prices).

the black panther is made in china , and the starclassic is made in japan that's why the tama are more expensive. i own a black panther traditional maple with the gold lugs 14 by 6.5 .... but if i had the money i would buy the starclassic maple. 4 years ago i had a tama starclassic maple 14 by 5.5 and that snare was amazing , i'am very sorry for selling it. there is something missing in the black panther snares.... i will replace mine in couple of mounths...it agian a matter of taste...

Black Panther snares are great quality, they really impressed me. They have power, finesse, precision. Just everything.

Cant go wrong with the black panther-the walnut has more crack than Pete Docherty. Also check out the Jimmy Chamberlin Yamaha-lovely snare

i would personally go for the BP. I have seen alot of great finishes and reviews about the BP's, and i wouldnt want another line of drums in my set. But in the end just go with what you like best.
