I've seen one, once. I think they're an even rarer species that matched grip jazz guys.

Man, that's a real stumper of a question. I have yet to see a trad grip metal or hardcore drummer. We need to get Steve Irwin here to track one down.

not once ever. probably about as common as a blast beat drummer who plays with brushes.

Diecast's drummer played traditional when I saw them. He actually seemed like a really cool drummer. That was actually my first time hearing Diecast, and he has a cool style and looked like he had great technique.

That's the guy I saw. I had forgotten the band's name.

He said he used to be in a death metal band, but he didn't say if he played trad or matched while in that band.

Nick Pierce of Embalmed plays traditional, and he does a damn fine job of it as well. Have a search for some of his videos on youtube, cracking stuff.

Yes, while in that death metal band I played trad. It really had nothing to do with the benefits of one style over the other, I just really really like trad. I've been playing that way all my life and even when I started getting into extreme metal and extreme drumming I couldn't switch. I tried to see if there was a benefit to going over to matched, but there was none that I could find. I had no problems playing the blasts or getting around the drums for changes and fills with trad. I think this might be the reason that most of the death metal guys don't use it. I know plenty of extreme drummers who are well versed in the grip but simply choose not to use it. They find it can create a small restriction on the quick movements around the drums that are necessary for the style, such as the fills or left handed crashing for example.

Correct me if this is completely wrong, but I'm pretty sure I saw the guy from The Berzerker doing the "gravity blast" with traditional grip.

I could see where if I was more comfortable with traditional then I would use it regardless of the style of music.

Yeah, my singer told me that on The Berzerker's video "all about you" the drummer played trad...
