AAARRRRGGGHHH! those dreaded words give me chills up my spine. I think I'd rather jab pins in my eyes. You see, being an "older" guy, I've been in the position to have those words yelled out at me more times than I care to mention. It's a cool song and all I guess, but after playing it 9 million times, it kinda gets old. I casually mentioned this on another post, but I'd kind of like to see what kind of reaction this thread gets and how many responses. Have at it!
Speaking of "wipe-out", how do you play the infamous pattern? On the snare? On a small tom? I think the recorded version is played on a tom.
On a side note, wouldn't that song be a great jingle for a toilet paper commercial?

My small tom is my 12" tom and it sounds fine on that one. I'm an old dude also and yes if you could play Wipeout back in the day the you "passed the drummer test"

Cultural frontiers I guess, the title didn't ring any bell to me. Of course when I've heard a sample on amazon, I realized I knew the song.
The intro sounds like a snare to me, and it seems to move on the toms on the second "solo part". My sample fades out after...
Don't hear that song much around Montreal. You guys should move here.

Boy what a great video.
I was wondering what was so special to be seen, but then he annonced he'd play the part with one hand.... Nice.
Then I thought " I'm sure some guys nowadays could double-bass the part with no hands", and then boom, he does it on single-bass...
and the big sticks part... what a great video.

I remember in 5th grade band, the first day I learned snare my teacher saying...
"Hold the sticks like this or you won't be playing wipe out by the end of the year"

Hey shuffle.
It's not so much a cultural thing as it is an age thing, I think. I grew up in Montreal and I remember when I first heard that song on the Radio (mid to late 60s). Me and my buddies were so stoked; we were about 10 years old at the time... I believe I heard it recently on the Electric Lunch Hour show on CHOM 97.7 Other than that, though, it has been a really, really long time since I heard it.

i think he uses double bass because his left foot is going when the solo is and hes not playing the hi hat. also i think he goes between floor tom and bass during the one hand thing. i think it was dicussed a long time ago. i dont remember

At a clinic I did with another drummer back in Feb. we played Wipe Out together. It was really cool . We traded off paying on every accent, and being that the song accents on every beat it took a lot of practice, but worked out so well in the end! I have it on DVD, and it sounds really freak'n cool.

I still haven't figured this song out, so if anybody yells at me to play it, I have no choice but to just say, "no." 8-)
I do want to learn it, but while I've had lots of people 'show' me, nobody yet has 'taught' me.
Meanwhile, I'm cookin' on Louie, Louie; La Bamba; Hang on Sloopy; and Little Latin Lupe Lou.

I also see him using the BD in the one-hand section, but I think the bd section is single-pedal....

Judging by the movement of his left leg I'm thinking its double.

When asked that question you should respond... "WIth one hand or two?"

On the one-handed part, hes using one foot on the bass drum, you can see the second pedal, sitting still by his pant leg....and on the no hand part he uses both pedals. I've never been able to read my newspaper that way.

Man, in a past band we actually added it to our set list because it was requested so much. I made it more interesting for me by evolving each section a little. First time around was on snare, second was on my 12 inch tom, so far it's like the song as near as i recall. For the 3rd round I played a mixture of quads and six's, RLFF RLFF RLFF RLFF RLRLFF RLRLFF RLFF, moving up and down the toms. Sometimes we extended it for a forth section and I would play a combination of paradiddles and double paradiddles moving around the kit.
People would lay on the dance floor and do what they called the alligator, way funny too watch.
Still don't like playing that song.

I have never been asked to play it because the crowds I usually play to are younger and I've never played in a cover band but I would probably say "NO!"
Oh, and that video was astounding. I am continually amazed at the unknown drummers out there that can REALLY play. Great showmanship, highly original plus lotsa chops. Cool.
When asked that question you should respond... "WIth one hand or two?"
...or even, "with one foot or two"...

Hi cdrums21
Yes me being old and in an oldies band and of course doing lots of oldies shows and beach party gigs Wipe Out does get requested a bit. Mostly by my wife :-(
I start it on the 10" tom, move to the floor tom, then the snare and then to change it up I accent with cymbal crashes to try and make is not so tedious. When I first started to play it again after many years my wrists were cramping up on me so at least it forced me get my chops going again!

I might get some reply's on this but I still like the tune just like when i hear "let there be drums" I still like that tune."wipe-out" was totally inovative for the time I think it came out around 1962-63 when surfing first got big.I just remember being a kid(5 yrs. old) hearing that tune and going WHOA.I was born in 1970 so it was my cousin's copy.I always like tunes that put drumming to the forefront i'm a drummer afterall.
Keep Swatting,
Bonzolead
P.S. hey they could ask you if you know "Margarita-ville" #@&%*?#@&%
I can fake it, but I'm not so sure it's right. And I don't have a copy of it on CD.
Can someone point me to some notation or a recorded version online?

i would love to hear that- for some reason I never do, its always "play wipeout"
and I hate it now!!!! though I consider myself fortunate that now my wrist goes really out of wack trying to play it, so i have an excuse not to play it (I would never tell someone else that I could just double-stroke or paradiddle it...)

Yes, it would be a great jingle as would having the USS Enterprise flying around Uranus!
I always try to laugh off the request that I will do wipe out when I drive home! Yeah, the recorded version is on a small tom and was recorded by Sandy Nelson which may make him the most imitated drummer ever. At one point I was doing alot of the solo on double bass sixteenth notes, then sixteenth note triplets. This eventually got me fired by the country band that I was playing in at the time.

... (I would never tell someone else that I could just double-stroke or paradiddle it...)
Cool, hawk!
Many years ago, when I first started taking lessons (we're talking '67 here) I asked my instructor (Kip Sweigart, Harrisburg, PA) to show me how to play the the "great showstopper". He proceeded to blow me away!...
He then said, "Now that's what you can do with paradiddles!"
I've been a paradiddle fan ever since.
On a side note, I find that playing Wipeout with paradiddles easier on the arms and wrists that playing straight singles...Go figure!
