Aydee,i totally understand where you come from and i really appreciate your informed post. And I certainly don't listen to only jazz, and i undestand what you're saying about wearing different hats as a listener and that kind of thing, i certainly listen to the english beat different than i listen to john coltrane...but still....i mean, keith carlock wouldnt spin his sticks playing a show with sting either.

I see what you mean LN. You see yourself as a sort of 'serious' musician, rather than an entertaining one.
That wasn't meant to sound bad, or meant to sound as if 'serious' musicians are superior musically to 'entertainers'... Just I can see what you mean by some musicians who are their to play music and music only, whilst others like to entertain the audience whilst playing the music.
I, myself, don't really have the time or patience to put stick tricks into my playing and frankly don't really see the need for it in what I play. Though I wouldn't dismiss stick tricks as a whole - they can be entertaining in the right setting - just they ain't for me at all. I s'pose I'm on the 'serious' band wagon.

Gotcha , LN .. Philly breeds great musicians, btw..If youre listening to Coltrane youre looking in the right place..; )
Foursticks makes a great point too. As a drummer, I wouldnt ever have the time to learn stick tricks in my practice schedule.. unless, like Jason said, I'm in a band that kinda needs me to do something like that as a part on an act or an attitude

anyone have any other ideas for showmanship techniques besides stick tricks? right now all ive ever done is the fake twirl, a few tosses and playing blindfolded. there's gotta be other ideas out there.

Breaking a stick, then throwing it away, and taking out a new one.

I think it's cool just for fun..and yes there are more important things..but it could be practical , too..
Here's a couple vids I think are way cool..the Pat Petrillo one from his DVD is great, and the Chip Ritter from Letterman is awesome!

Throw the stick onto the head quite hard, and it will rebound up and twirl because it was struck on the tip.

Got to try that one.
Also, how do you guys break sticks purposely? I break sticks once every 5-6 months, how did you do it on purpose?

Hold the stick with both hands, one at each end. Then force it down on your knee.

tricks are to pump up the audience, or pump your image up, and jazz listeners don't really need to be "pumped up".
nuff said??

Awsome vids, nice one! I've never been too big on stick twirling, but i'm gonna start practicing while i'm watching tv or something.

I can't really do it and have very little interest in it. I show and explain a basic twirl to younger students sometimes, just to loosen things up a bit.

haha! you've dredged up some really old threads today! i have to admit i've enjoyed looking at the ancient postings and seeing who was active in the old days before my time.
i can twirl sticks reasonably well but i usually don't because i'm chicken that i'll drop one!
