You're not wrong. That solo on his site impressed me more than anything I've ever seen from the Donati/Mangini/Lang crowd. His control with the hands and brushes is amazing, and his chops are astounding too.

I agree....it's been about 10 years since I picked up sticks....started again 2 months ago.....My wife actually told me to buy a set.....gotta love her.....
Greb is without a doubt the most impressive I have seen so far.......you know drumming is a lot different with the internet.....I like it a lot

I wasn't comparing, I just like his approach better - while he has many of the same techie tricks (ostinatos, double kick, twirling) he's also obviously spent a lot of time working on hands and brushes in fairly cute ways. That impressed me quite a lot, being as those kinds of approaches are less attack heavy and require a bit more thinking about sound and tone rather than just turbocharged speed.

Oh man he really is something. But im telling you, as much as those videos are amazing, they don't do him justice. I saw him play at the Montreal Drumfest. Truly one of the best i've seen. He's a dymanic Lang. And ive seen Lang play before as well. Benny Greb as definitly got an amazing talent!!!

Dude this guy rocks alot alot alot !
Have u guys seen his new video ?
I'd actually say he's the modern Steve Gadd. Not because their style is simillar, it's not at all, but he seem to work with the same way of thinking.
He has those patterns\ grooves \ fills that he always repeats and uses. U understand me ? Sord of like gadd.
He's very creative and as well and has a modern smooth sound. he's amazing.

If I had to peg him, I'd describe him as the first guy to really fuse the whole Matt Chamberlain / Joey Baron approach of extensive sound control and groove depth with the Bozzio/Grant Collins/Thomas Lang approach of complex co-ordinational/ostinato playing.
Which is a bit annoying, because I wanted to do that! Not only that, he's only a year older than me. Ouch.

OMG that 16th note groove he was playing near the end of that video is banging!
He is fantastic, very fluid and controlled but gets such volume from his drums. I think I need to study him more closely, hes my kind of drummer!

i was floored by his video on drummerworld
the newest one....i agree with you NUTHA, it was the most creative musical piece ive ever heard. He is my new inspiration.
hahaha which reminds me how in his solo he fixes the placement of his rack tom right in the middle of his playing..it gave so solo a bit of flavor (as if it didnt have enoung)

what caught my attention was his way of a drum solo. be mabe a simple beat and added so much small details and notes everywhere it became a very organized solo that even people who dont know much about drums and sit in amazment. gota love the double kick in the end, kick ass

Great drummer.
I find it kind of "creepy" though, that he seems to be a clone of Lang. He even looks like Thomas...same gotee, hat, same Champaigne Delite drums....mmmm
Great though

Definatly, I had never heard of benny until I saw his Meinl festival video's, soon after I gathered about every single video I could find of the guy, he completly flew to my 2nd favorite drummers spot, his drumming is sensational, he has such a HUGE sound, and his sonor designer's sound absolutly perfect, there's no words to describe how much I love his playing.

I don't quite understand this statement. There's not a single drummer that never repeats the same twice. Even if they improvise in a manner, there are things theyve learned and practice and utilize that practice in some way in their playing. Everyone has their own favorite licks.

Just ordered his CD after watching all of his vids here at Drummerworld.
My first thoughts on him when I saw the vids were: "Finally!! A young and upcoming Drummer that has got great chops but most importantly musical taste and a solid Jazz backround!" His sound and energy are great, so is his technique and coordination.... But it feels like it is not about that - it is all about the groove. Great. Insane.
And he is younger than me... that makes depressive. AND he is from Germany! People from my country just know how to drum! Yeeehaaaa!
I also hear a big influence of Steve Gadd in his playing who must be one of his big influences. Check out the videos of his Jazzplaying that are posted on his Website.
On his records he also played many instruments and sang all the voices.... WOW. I think I`ll do some transcriptions of his grooves if I find the time. I`ll also post a CD review. So far all the tracks I heard sounded great.
I`m sure he will be huge in the future.
What do you guys think about him?

He is an ispiration. Somebody we can all aspire to be like, although I doubt there will be another drummer like him, his style is unique. He can play something and make it look extraordinarily easy, but when you look at it more closely it is really quite difficult. I wonder what his playing will be like in 10 years time.

Man Greb rocks, his groove is deep. He's got something that not very many drummers have I think. Much like the something the Porcaro's and Purdies had....the "groove of doom". His licks are well tastey to, and his solos are really interesting. My new favourite drummer I think, i could watch him for days. Really really diggin it.

and a nicer guy you will not meet. he has a cool sense of humour that actually comes across in his drumming as well as the talks in the clinics. he's one of the rare people who can switch from the kind of seriousness it must take to get to his level of mastery to lighthearted levity in a 16th note space of time.

He is capable of incorporating his monster chops into grooves that are dripping with funk and dynamics, something lots of those technical masters have yet to figure out.
By far my favorite drummer.

Mhhh, as far as I could see it on Benny`s plan he doesn`t tour in the USA very often. To keep you updated, visit his website and the gig plan: http://www.bennygreb.de/com/html/news.html
Or maybe ask him per e-mail or myspace message.
Hope I could help a bit...

Been checking out Meinl cymbals site alot lately, watching their videos and I must say Benny is one of the most refreshing skilled drummers I've seen in a while...
His solos are very diverse with groove and independence while still showing tremendous musicality - unlike some of the other ostinato freaks out there....
I'm REALLY diggin this dude!

He's a very good drummer. He's got the coordination and the foot technique down. On top of that, he's got a good sense of humor.

Just got Benny's new DVD, The Language Of Drumming.
He starts off by using a system of letters for different rythmic values.
At first I thought it might be just mumbo jumbo and him trying to find some niche
in a crowded market, but it turns out to be very clever and it does work...
Then he played and any doubts were dispelled... beautiful technique and feel.
A pleasure to watch a great player, and still in his 20s, in action.
