the sticker on the inside is the production date - November of 2005 is what yours means (I'm pretty sure). Mine says 06/03 (march 2006). The metal plate on the outside of the shell is stamped with a serial number - mine says S00477, I believe that's it's sequential number of production and there were 476 made before mine. Sounds right but I could be wrong.

05/12 is what mine says. very cool. a little confused seeing how mine was written upside down. but that makes sense. all these great BP's makes my maple look like the ugly brother.

$349 isn't bad. I really like the Craviotto maple snare but it is $499, so I'm thinking the $150 could be spend on other stuff.

I know you're talking about a different Panther than I have, but I'll get some sound files up at some point (hammered bronze 6.5x14). I was hoping mine came with die-cast because I've never played that kind of rim. Is it just more solid, or does it affect the sound (fuller more powerful rimshot)?

Mine is the Hammered Steel posted above -- it has die-cast rims. I too, have never played these rims before, but now I can tell you this; the drum definitely sounds more solid and the rimshots are much more powerful. All this for the unbelieveable price of $230! Gotta love those Black Panthers!

I'd love to try the maple and gold die-cas rim one too. I just played my first gig with mine in Seattle on Saturday night, and the snare was outstanding. Nice and loud, but not overbearing. After we played, 3 random drummers came up just to check out the snare. I'm very pleased and can see me wanting another one.
A couple of years ago, I was totally blown away with the sound of these Black Panthers . So I decided to buy one. Here it is...

Finally, I got a chance to record some sounds. Here's the hammered bronze snare with a coated G2 on top, hazy 300 on bottom, and a 42-strand wire. This was supposed to be about the snare, but I started having fun. I sometimes put a little moon-gel type thing on, but I left it clean to hear the drum better. I also mic'd the shell. The recording sounds more like this looks-

That's a good sounding snare, Parser. I love the metallic overtones from the shell. It isn't the sound I'm looking for, though, so I guess it is back to the Maple with the gold hardware, as in Radeq's recordings.

I played the Black Panther Cherry snare back in November when I bought the one I have now. I remember it having a very nice, solid, and loud (but not too loud) rimshot. It was a beautiful drum as all BPs are, my second favorite to the birdseye maple.

Hm its very very different from metal snares or even maple snares, it has "lots" of low frequencies and delivers saturated, warm, rich sound. A nice unique snare ;)

hi, I can tell you that all the best prices are here - www.midwestpercussion.com
and I can compare only three of them, cause I tryied two maple - and one bronze all of them 5,5 x14
first was the black finish maple drum with golden lugs and hoops - sounds very similar, like the birdseye maple
and what I have is bronze
mostly you here difference between these drums, when you hit the rimshot, maple sound more open, there is more air in the sound, and bronze is more concentrated, and it has a bigger punch, 'cause of the metal...but when you play ghost notes, on the bronze, it sounds, like you would play wooden snare....thats it :)
I will try to post sounds of both of the panthers - the birdseye maple my friend has, and the bronze one I have
take care

Alright folks...lately I've posted a few threads concerning snares because when I get my new one I want to be 1000% satisfied with my decision and enjoy its sound above any other. Now, I have my favorites from most of the big guys (If your interested, Black Beuaty from Ludwig, Plain ole' Copper from Yamaha, Copeland Sig from Tama, Chad Smith Sig from Pearl) but the one snare I have heard absolutely glowing reviews about are Black Panthers. I certainly would have tried them but my local drum shop has none. Would all you Black Panther folks tell me what I need to know. Also, do your local shops stock them, or did you buy them without hearing first? Thanks

Hello fellow norwegian! I've only tried one black panther snare and it was some wood thingy (5,5) wich actually sounded really good. But if you want a snare you could use for lots of different genres I would say go for the brass one. brass is more versitile then steel. But does none of the drumshops in Oslo got em?? That was very wierd, cause here in Bergen we got lots of em on display. But Bergen got Norways biggest drum shop so mabye thats why. Anyway, hope you find one!

How about more info on that nice looking Yammie kit?
Aah, it's nothing flash! Just a Yamaha Stage Custom. Matt natural wood finish. Bought the kit on the strength of the 22"X18" bass drum sound. Sounds absolutely awesome with an EMAD2 Batter side. The front head (just visible on the photo) is an old Superkick2 off the batter side (hated it!) that I totally cut away leaving only the 2 inches or so of skin and felt (something for the front hoop to clamp onto). Punchy as HELL!!!
Anyway, back to the thread... Here's some more pics of the snare (and kit) from the back...

Here's a short video of a gig we did recently with an AC/DC tribute (Powerage!!!)
Their drummer used my kit for the night and this video is taken with my camera phone from the wings. The sound of the snare is very close to what I was hearing in the wings with maybe a hint of what was being heard out front... Let me know what you think!

I officially became a black panther owner recently and i could not be happier with my new hand hammered bronze 14 by 5.5. I put a Remo Powerstroke 4 on the batter side and having that focused sound is awesome. I'll have pictures up as soon as i fugure how to do it.

Could anyone tell me the fundamental difference between Maple and Walnut would be?

i think that the Walnut is just the outer plie... my be i have a mistake on that one.... but i think it's just for making the snare looks beautiful, or its made by 100% Walnut , i never played a Walnut snare , so i don't realy know the difference between them...

Is anyone familiar with the BP snare that is included when you purchase a Mapex Pro M series kit?
How does it size up to the rest of the Black Panther line? I couldn't imagine it being on the same level as the other snare at that price.
i got the BP 7 x 12 maple/cherry shell snare with my Pro-M kit -- as pro as you can get. crackin' sound for sure.

I am going to get a Black Panther 6 1/2 x 14 brass snare and a BP steel snare as a second snare. If I get a 6 1/2 steel would it be diverse enough compared to the brass snare, or should I consider the 5 1/2 steel instead? I want two distint sounds.

Sweet idea, would you be using both at the same time e.g. auxilary snare or would they both be used as main snares in different situations. You could get one hammered to add variety possibly.
I probably wouldn't do that in my situation because you may run the risk of having two awesome snares that sound way to similar.
But then again you can never have to many snares, especially black panthers.

so hold on...i can get an even better sound by replacing the stock head that came with it? i think the snare sounds great with the UT remo head (i think UT) with the bp logo on it...but it can still sound better again? wow...any suggestions for 12" heads?

hey i now ive been on this thread a bit now...but can anyone tell me where is a good place to buy BP snares at a good price???
I was looking at a BP 10"x5.5" deep forest walnut snare on Ebay...for about €250(not including P&P),but when i went to buy,the shop doesnt sell to anyone outside the UK...
i was then looking around teh net and came upon "Midwest percussion",and they have the same snare for an even better price, that is: €290 including P&P...but i dont know if they ship internationally....??!!
everywhere else on the net ive been has had prices a lot higher(some german sites have the same snare at €350 excluding P&P,etc.)
so please help me out people!!
if any of you have ordered from "Midwest percussion"(i think its in Illisnois(if IL means that??))

Our fellow drummerWorld'er - Shane (Groove), who recently opened a drum store in Richmond VA has the best Black Panther selection I've seen online - I've been studying real hard on which one I'm gonna' buy as soon as I can reasonably tell my wife that there's another snare drum in the house...
the hand hammered steel is currently my favorite - but that might change a few times between now and when I actually order it.

New Mapex Black Panther SS Solid Steel 14x5.5 snare. The kit is my 7 piece mapex saturn in emerald stardust.
Nice snare, how does it sound? It was the main one I was looking at from BP, along with the hammered bronze and hammered stainless steel. I know it costs more but IMO would be worth it. Oh and I too am getting a Mapex Saturn, they are so good!

Used black panthers for years now and have 2 at the moment but the phosphor bronze 6.5 x 14 is being sold to make way for a brass on brass ludwig black beauty. The other black panther snare is my Vavona burlwood deep forest 5.5 x 14 ,which I believe is quite rare as only 200 were ever made. Its a keeper and sounds absolutely stunning, its been my fave for ages now. Mapex do make great snares and the kits are good too. Had a saturn pro for a while and it sounded gorgeous but the drum sizes were a bit small and struggled to get the big sound I love. Back to playing my Premier genista with the 24" kick. Its a monster sound.
Will try to post some photos when I work out how hahaha. Computer says no!!

I have recently picked up my 1st high end snare. Its a Black Panther Hammered Brass 5.5"x14".
The sound is awesome, the diecast hoops really give it that crack, I can't wait to see what it sounds like mik'd up!
It's much, much easier to tune, probably because of the 10 lugs rather than the 8 on my M-Birch snare?

Hey there!
I don’t own a panther snare, but I really want to! I’m looking for a loud snare for metal/rock with as less ring as possible and a fat sound. I’ve heard that the panthers are pretty much the best. Could anyone give me some advice? :)

Hey Breakdown, the black panthers are some real nice snares, i've already posted mine, and i'd say you can't really go wrong with any, but if you want some advice on which one to choose, tell us about the sound you're after, and the styles you play etc, so we can get a better idea of what you want from your snare.

If I had to compare the sound I would say that Daniel Erlandsson's snare (Arch Enemy/ Album: Stigmata) would pretty much be the sound... or Lars Ulrich's sound at Rock Am Ring 2006. Otherwise I'm playing metalcore to Hard Rock, the sound should really cut through and the pitch shouldn't be too high. I want the snare to be sharp, but not choked or "flat" and it shouldn't be too sensitive, it's rather ought to have a heavy attack. If that is a good description to you guys ^^

Well then. I'd say either buy a 14x6.5 steel one, or go with a phosphor bronze one similarly sized. That should help you towards that sort of sound.

Well I'll add my .02 for Mapex
I own a (discontinued) 5.5 x 13 Mapex Phosphor Bronze snare. One of my 2 favs now, the other being my Pork Pie 5 x 13 maple.
The Mapex PB's get a cool sound that as the ads say, mixes wood warmth with metal cut. I have a few other snares and they are all nice but this was a great purchase. I bought it without hearing it although I had heard the 6.5 x 14 and new the genral timbre. The 13 inch size gives it more focus and control than the bigger drums. That fits in with most of the gigs I do right now.
I'd like to maybe check out some more of the Mapex models evetually. The Walnut looks nice.

Hey guys, i am new to this forum and i just got myselfa new black panther birdseye maple 14x6.5 and im falling in love with it. As you can see, i have already changed the batter head to an Emperor X and the snares to puresound's custom 20 strands. I will soon change the reso head to get the best sound out of the drum. Some people tell me the Emperor X isn't the best head for this snare, but im looking for a punchy sound without many overtones. Any suggestions and comments are welcome!

I'm considering a 13x6 maple cherry black panther. everyone else seems to be posting about 12x6's, so i was wondering if there is anybody who has any experience with the larger size. i haven't heard the drum yet so i'm not sure what to expect. i want a versatile drum with a good tuning range that will maintain warmth and response. i typically don't like piccolos at all and this won't be an auxillary snare, so i'm a bit apprehensive regarding the small diameter. also, is there any difference between these and the "natural maple" of the same size? from what i can tell from mapex's website it sounds like the cherry model just has an outer ply of cherry but there is no mention of the difference in sound quality. sorry for the longish post. any information is appreciated.

thanx for all the pics, but could someone help explain WHY the Black Panthers (specifically the birdseye 5.5x14 or SS ones) are so great? i've heard that they're versatile and record well, but how so and why else compared to other snares that people rave about?

I think the major part of there popularity is the price and quality. So many people get these for the simple fact its gonna cost you twice as much to get the same out of any other brand (brand new).$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ $$$$$$

Hi there dudes, I'm new to the forum and despite being playing for some years now, this one it's the first drummers forum I've ever joined. I'm the proud owner of a 14''x5.5'' Mapex Black Panther Hammered Brass. I love BP's and soon I'll be getting the new Chris Adler's signature BP as well. Oh btw does anyone know a good music store that would provide international shipping services to Argentina? Things here are IMPOSSIBLE to buy, even shitty drumming stuff is extremely expensive so I try to get as much as I can from the US through a good friend of mine that has an international credit card.

I had posted a thread last week looking for help on picking a new snare and just got off the phone ordering it. I went for the Mapex Black Panther Big Cat 8 x 14. As you probably know its a Saturn design with 4 maple 2 walnut plys. It came down to it and the Vinnie Paul DDrum snare. I actually preferred the look of the Ddrum the flames would go good with my sunburst Sonor's. I have heard lots of quality issues with Ddrum's and it scared me off. I used to have a Mapex Saturn snare it was 14 x 5.5 and I really liked the sound and quality, I can only imagine what the 8" will sound like!!! I have yet to hear anything bad about Panther snares..The Ddrum was $30 more though it has cast hoops and the Panther has 2.3's but I have an extra set of die cast pearl hoops I can put on the Panther.
Hey,
New to the forum, so I hope I'm posting this in the correct place (it just seemed logical here). I have the same BP Vavona Burlwood snare that "ciacia123" posted pictures of.
Holidays are here and money's tight...anybody interested in buying mine?
The drum's mint... never gigged, just studio used. I bought mine in '04 new from the long island drum center and have been the only owner since. Can send pics.
Let me know if any interest, and nice to be a part of this forum.

I am missing a piece from my black panther's snare strainer, does anyone have any suggestions as to how I should go about ordering the replacement part? I bought this drum at Pacific Drum Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia a few years ago and when I bought the drum it was already missing the end piece for the snare throw off. As luck would have it the drum store went out of business several months after I had tried repeatedly to get help from the woman who sold me the drum. Not only did I get ripped off on the drum (I foolishly shelled out close to $600 for the drum) but I was treated as if I were being a nuisance for having the nerve to ask them to help out a customer. Needless to say, I persisted and over the course of a few months had no such help provided by the people working at Pacific Drums and now I left with an incomplete drum. As gorgeous as the drum may be, it would be incredible if someone on this forum could point me in the right direction towards having a 'perfect' snare drum at last!

Went into my local drum shop today and fell in love.. well sort of, it was with the Cherry Bomb 13 x 5 1/2 Black Panther snare. Pictures on the web don`t do this snare any justice, seeing it in the flesh it is a beautiful piece of kit, was looking for the blaster but they didn`t have one in stock.
I bought a Cherry Bomb over Christmas and had to bring it back because of a very uneven bearing edge, and flaking chrome off of the bottom of the top hoop. The drum is absolutely beautiful though. It is also a very nice sounding drum. I really enjoyed playing it for the two weeks I had it. I recently got a Blaster from Mapex to replace a damaged 13 x 6 Arctic White Saturn. This one I am not completely sold on. I am not really a fan of all Maple drums. This does have the Walnut re-rings in it, but they don't do a lot to tone down the really bright maple sound that comes from this baby. If you like lively, ringing snares, you will love the Blaster.
I am hoping that they make a Cherry Bomb kit to do with the snare. I think that would look and sound amazing.

Just found this thread and noticed that no one haven't posted this snare here before.. at least I didn't see any!
Mapex Black Panther Elm snare 14" x 5,5" w/ walnut sound rings
It's funny that they call it "elm snare" even there's only one ply of elm, for making it look beautiful. Rest of the inner plies are maple.
This snare is a limited edition one and I asked from Mapex that how many have they actually built these and they told they have made only 200 pieces -- Lucky me because this sounds killer!
Enjoy!

has anyone had any experiance with the 13x7 blaster, if so, can this drum be tuned low..
I own one, and yes the drum can be tuned low, medium or high. It seems to like high the best. The snare has a lot of flavor to it. It is very bright, if that is what you like.

Nice looking steel snare.
It would be a nice verse snare. But I find it doesn't have the body or depth that I'd like for a main snare. Im going to get an SJC snare made up at some point...

My 14 x 6.5 Black Panther Hammered Bronze are perfect for that. My new 14 x 8 Sonor Danny Carey signature, really has the body. I love it, but it might be too much for most out there.

Here are mine two Panthers:
In the middle 12x7 maple "fastback" and on the right side 14x5,5 1mm premium steel snare. Both are great!
And there is also 10x2 sonor jungle snare.
