Dear Parser,
Thank you for your words!
The Ride is actually a Leopard Crash 18 by Sabian, that at the time I used pretty often.

Wonderful drumming, mate! I loved every moment of it! It's a thrill to see playing like this which should be on the site of www.drummerworld.com (http://www.drummerworld.com), but instead, see it on the forum!! Unbelieveable. Remind me why you aren't on this site again?? Lol. It is interesting that you use a matched grip technique on this genre and style of jazz. I love your playing man! I take it that you are a professional, correct? Like Drummer Karl, if you wouldn't mind checking out my jazz drumming on, 'Take Five', then that would be great! Please comment on it if you listen!
Again, amazing drumming!

Dear funked up,
Thank you so much for the nice words! Where do you come from?
Yes, I'm a professional drummer, also drum teacher at some schools here in Germany. I play matched and traditional, but the first better, therefore the stuff that is most "involved" I play almost always with matched.
I checked out your file, but somehow it wasn't working, at least in my computer. This means: I could access the site with no problem and could see the "player" of your song, but it didn't play anything...
Dear Karl,
I haven't played in Kassel, lately (aprox. in the last 20 years!), 'though about 6 years ago I think I played in Erfurt (reference for others: a town near Kassel), but can't remember anymore with whom, LOL.
Thank you ALL for checking out the stuff!

Alex,
I don't know why the link won't work. How strange. Oh well, thanks for trying! I am from England, and am planning on attending either LCM (Leeds College of Music), Drum-Tech, or Drum Institute next year.
It is great that you play both grips. Versatility is extremely important! :-)

Dear funked_up,
Regarding: "I don't know why the link won't work", those are the mysteries of Internet!
I lived in UK (I love UK and it's people) for a short while and gave a clinic at Leeds College of Music in 1982.

You did a clinic at Leeds? That's awesome man! How were the students? I visited a few weeks ago, but the students were on holiday so I couldn't really find out.

Thanks for the good luck, I am sure I will need it!

06-08-2006, 09:35 PM
Dear funked-up,
I didn't see any drumstudent play then, but the students on the other instruments were great (I play with them during the clinic). I understand that is one of the major jazz schools in Europe, and one of the oldest, together with Graz (Austria), Cologne (Germany) and a few others.
I hanged out with the drum teacher then, again, in 1982 (I was 22 years old), he was an australian drummer, Tony Faulkner, who wrote an amazing book , "Solo Transcriptions for Drummers", with transcriptions of jazz drummers (Roach - Haynes - Elvin - Philly Joe - Shelly Mane - Tony), which are among the best, most occurate, transcriptions I've seen so far of these musicians. I don't know if he is still there...He was really nice with me, as everybody else in the school.
Check out some at my site!

06-09-2006, 01:41 PM
Dear funked_up,
Well, Leeds College is one of the main schools not only in UK but in Europe, and is an INTEGRAL school, meaning with this: is NOT ONLY for drums but for all instruments, and on a University Level (TERCIARY level, if you know what I mean), so it's a much sought after place to study.
You'll have the possibility to study AND PLAY TOGETHER ALL THE TIME with some of the best students of the other instruments in the UK, and interaction is one of the things that make you grow the most, and is many times the harder thing to get (because of the organization-logistic needed, experience, contacts, etc...). Besides, you'll receive great drum tuition, and your drum camarades also will fill the previous profile (some of the best students in the UK).
This is not to say it is the only place and way to learn, but definetely THERE you'll be at one of the most positive enviroments available for your development.
I wish you the best in your audition!
Dear theduke86,
Thank you for your positive comments.
I'm curious to know which resemblence you found... In any case: John Riley! Great player, educator and FRIEND, I love the guy!

Dear funked-up,
Thank you for your nice words and interest.
I don't base my playing on rudiments ('though I did studied all that extensively too), but, IN SHORT, I think about music as a languaje and try to expand my knowledge of the languaje always with new "words" (phrases), "effects" (density, space, dynamics, and others), concepts, etc...

I play matched grip when I'm playing jazz.
I don't see how its weird besides the fact that its maybe not the usual way of doing it but as long as you can still play it properly, I don't see whats wrong with it.

Hi, Guys!
Thank you all for the very nice comments, I'll try to answer all of you in the same order you wrote me:
* Dear Ytsejammer,
I still have the 18 Leopard Crash but don't use it lately. My main ride at the moment is a 20 Sabian Raw Ride AA, my second ride fluctuates between a 20 Sabian Legacy and a 20 Manhattan Ride HHX, depending on how they sound to me in the specific room I'm playing,
* Dear bballdrummer34,
Yes, the trombone player is Conrad.
* Dear foursticks,
Playing with Joe was incredible. It was circa 1992-3 during a whole week in Chile. He has great understanding of rhythm, awesome sound and on top is a very friendly guy.

I'd like to ask you a question if you don't mind. There's been a discussion on another thread about what records should be recommended to a drummer who wants to learn about jazz drumming.
What records would you recommend to such a person, and what, if any, record do you remember helping you the most when you were just taking up the study of jazz drumming?

... what records should be recommended to a drummer who wants to learn about jazz drumming...
Dear Jay,
Thank you very much!
That's a difficult question to answer because there are so many great artists to learn from that would take a long time to list them all.
I basically focussed mostly from bop to today, and not so much on what happened before that (but that's interesting too, of course).
A very brief list of drummers I would reccomend to listen includes Max Roach, Art Blakey, "Philly" Joe, Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Jack DeJohnette.
Then there are a lot of drummers who are more known for their contribution to Fusion playing, especially in the 70's, but that played jazz with special freshnes, like Steve Gadd (Chick Corea and so many others), Harvey Mason (Mulligan-Baker), Billy Cobham (lots of CTI records in the 70's and some late 60's), you can draw ideas from all of them, an incidentally any drummer you like from any style. As long as you understand the dinamics, touch, interaction, etc. that works well for jazz you'll be able to most likely ad what you like from them to your style of playing.
Then you have the more recent drummers like Jeff Watts, Ralph Peterson, Bill Stewart, etc.
I would basically recommend ANY record with those 13 drummers.
Then all the good local drummers, every town from every country has their own, a number of guys not too wellknown but that are great.
The list I made is very small, there are hundreds or even thousands, really, but at least it would help someone to start, and most probably, just looking for these artists, they would run into many other fantastic players.
It depends also on what specific direction of jazz drummer you want to be.

PD: In the case of the three first players listed I would like to mention one album from each, because many recordings of that period are not too clear due to the tecnology available back then (not that there are not lots of very clear recordings of them 'though):
* Max Roach: "Saxophone Colossus" (Sonny Rollins)
* Philly Joe Jones: "Sonny Clark Trio" (Sonny Clark)
* Art Blakey: "The Giants of Jazz" (live tour with Dizzy, Al McKibbon, Monk, Stitt, etc recorded at the Victoria Theatre in London)

Yeah. Sonny Clark! Great suggestion for a beginning jazz drummer, a piano trio.

Hi Jay,
In your first message your question was:
...what records should be recommended to a drummer who wants to learn about jazz drumming...
However in your second was sligtly different (at least to me):
...suggestion for a beginning Jazz drummer, a piano trio.
My first answer was about drummers/records I think you should know if you want to "know about" or play jazz.
However, if the question is what drummers/records should someone concentrate on or analize if you are STARTING to play Jazz, my answer would be slightly different. It should be records that you, somehow, could analize and maybe play-a-long with:
So I include three (of the many):
* Max Roach: "Saxophone Colossus" (Sonny Rollins)
* Philly Joe Jones: "Art Pepper meets The Rhythm Section" (Art Pepper)
* Jimmie Cobb: "Gettin' Together" (Art Pepper)
http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p302/Sonorlite18/StartingJazzRecordsSmall.jpg
For listening anyone of the first 13 drummers, but for STARTING TO ANALIZE the three previous records. Besides you should listen, even if you don't really understand what's going on, the kind of Jazz that excites you the most, whatever the direction is. The idea is that with those 3 records you can start developing some foundation for most types of Jazz.
Of course this is a simplified answer, the process is long, BUT BEAUTIFUL.
Best regards!
