Hi mike - Vic discontinued the red yarn mallets that appear in Big Time. and that's too bad - they were great! I'm using green yarn-wrapped mallets that Vic is now producing. They are new, so they may not be in your stores just yet.
thanks-

i'm reading this at the moment and i hightly recommend it.
Billy, thanks. i wish there were more books like it on the market. most drumming books have a three page intro
and then 40 pages of manuscript. here's a book i can read in bed, on the bog and in the bus. its one of the reasons i got into drum forums. sometimes i just want to read about drums and drumming rather than need a metronome, sticks and a practice pad to make it worthwhile.
i'm going to try not play cymbals for a whole song this weekend at a gig...lol. i'm just not sure which one of our repertoir i'm going to do this in. perhaps 'lady madonna'. actually this reminds me of a small duo gig a did on a sunday a few months back. i arrived at the gig to discover to my horror that i didn't pack my snare! it was a very low volume gig fortunately so i tried various things ... putting my tambourine on a tom resting on its case between my legs with a towel over both, playing on the case while accenting the hihat on the back beat etc. it was a tough tho very musical gig. sometimes problem solving brings us out of the comfort zone and into the high performance 'listen-or-die' zone.

i might pick your brain if you don't mind.
first question: do you know of any drumming books that are readers rather than manuscripts? recommendations?
second question: i know its hard, but if you had to choose one piece of drumming you have recorded, that most represents your ideals, which would it be (from which album, which song)?
i like your 'fills' section in the book. for me a principle fill is found on the queen 'made in heaven' CD...'too much love will kill you', the fill into the solo. i think it is one of the most superbly recorded fills in history. know which one i'm on about? what would be your favourite/s?

Hi again Nutha!
Kenny Werner wrote a book called "effortless mastery - discovering the musician within"
Amazon should have it somewhere. I got hip to this only recently - it's pretty darned good.
favorite song/performance... this is REALLY dependent upon styles in my case.
I love my track on robbie Robertson's Hold Back the Dawn (from Storyville) and this is a great record for drummers to listen to -
Robbie is obsessed with drummers and always made the drumming a huge part of his two records. but there are others too -= Jim Beard has a record titled "lost at the carnival" and I do a kind of left field-dixieland almost kind of thing on one song there...
For heavier stuff - the ill-fated knack record "serious fun" is full of crazy-muscular drumming...
All in all, so far, I would say my own live duets record (two hands clapping) totally covers where I'm coming from (except for jazz - and that record will be out early next year)

i laughed when i saw your charting system. the one i use is similar but without bar counts (maybe i will need to do this later when i get more diverse work). next to the song title i always write what i call the 'tempo phrase'. its a few memorable words in the song that nail the ideal tempo for the song (usually something from halfway through the chorus) i sing them to myself just before i count in. eg: 'we can stop thinkin' nowowowow...and a 1...2...3...4...' (similar to your advice on page 28).
what became clear to me is that you and i have approached drumming from opposite ends. while you were very technical in your early career i only found out about paradiddles after 4 years of drumming. i had to teach myself by watching MTV and playing to tapes. so for me just keeping up and making music with the song was all i could do to play the drums. now in the past handful of years i'm all into technique to 'catch up'. funny thing is, it hardly shows in my gigs where music comes first. i was practicing triplets between the hands and feet for nearly three years before they started to find a spot in my gigs. and with all the work on paradiddles i only see a diddle now and then in a fill or in a groove when i'm live.

I just picked up a copy of this from my local library -- I wasn't really looking for it, I just took it from the shelf randomly. Haven't had a chance to look into it yet, since I'm still wading through Miles Davis' autobiography. I guess I'd better get to it ASAP... :)

Billy,
I purchased your video "Big Time." I really dig the analogy and philosophy of the clock gears, very effective for me. I also enjoy the angle of a visual artist with music. I must say though, the biggest learning tool for me was/is watching you and Andy just grooving around. So much that I purchased a Firepod to be able to lay my own improv bass lines down, loop them, and play with different approaches. I certainly hope there is more of this kind of stuff on the new video.
Thanks for ehjumuhcating me,
Brian

The next one i very unike Big Time. It is a more outward approach to some fundamental jazz concepts - including relevant rudiments and examples. it's a broad approach aimed to get drummers who don't "get" jazz" into jazz - or jazzy-ness. I hope it helps alot of folks out! We are hoping to have it available in March so stay tuned...

Fantastic! I also read your article in Modern Drummer and thought that is was great. I have had the same talk with many band members and drummers alike, as I flat out told a drummer that he had to be ahead of the game if he was ever going to get anywhere! When the record deal did come, he was the odd man out and almost cost his band the record deal with his bad attitude. Jeff Porcarro used to replace bands' drummers all of the time.

hi billy
i'm asking all the pros this question. i think the answers could be very instructive to many of us.
let's say there was a totally new drum rudiment that was suddenly discovered and was so totally applicable that any drummer worth their salt would quickly try to learn it, master it and use it in recordings and gigs. this hypothetical new rudiment is quite hard to play and totally unrelated to any other rudiment. it is so good that you know that the next time you sit in on a session the writer is probably going to ask you to use it somewhere in their song.
my question is: starting from scratch what would be your way of learning it?
thanks

interesting question Nutha - as in all things that are difficult, I would begin slowly and work it until it feels great - then slowly speed it up. I would also mentally practice it when away from the kit - listen to it's sound in my mind's ear.
that's it!
anybody can do it!!!!! :D

thanks billy.
let's say that a pupil of yours was learning a totally new rudiment...say the flamacue. you had in a lesson showed them how it is done and by the end of the lesson you were satisfied that they understood the pattern but a week later they came back and told you they were having problems organising their practice. what practical advice would you give them in terms of setting up a schedule and/or breaking in the new rudiment. what in your experience has been the best way to organise practice? how long to play the exercise at a given tempo, how often etc?
thanks

Hey Nutha -
I don't have any students that come weekly. Or even yearly! There are, in fact, only one or two people who have had more than one lesson with me...ever.
I can't honestly answer a fictitious kind of question such as yours. I have no game plan. I would llike to think that I would know what to say to crack the nut (so to speak) with your fictitious student - but maybe not. I teach maybe two or three private lessons per year. That is all my schedule allows. So I am not the guy to offer advice on a teaching "program". I deal with each student instinctively and hopefully am able to help them. I love teaching - I love helping out! this is why I make the DVDs and participate as much as I can - trying to reach as many as possible. sorry I can't be more of a help.
Elvin Jones once told me that practicing more than an hour a day is a waste of time. There are many perspectives on practice. i think one should practice technically - and THEN have some fun on the drums.. and THEN try to push the envelope musically a bit and tape what is going on.
then repeat the next day.
Meanwhile - listen to music and learn. follow your heart.
NUTHA JASON
01-15-2007, 09:28 AM
still a great answer. wish i was one of the two.
and on what elvin said. i have found that if i keep up a schedule of 5 hours a day i burn out after a few weeks. so it does make sense. i guess it is helpful to separate technical excellent practice from applicable fun practice. one hour of technical practice at a high degree of performance a day sounds right. the fun stuff (creatively applying something already covered melodically over the kit or jamming to discs or free soloing) can be done for hours and very often i get sad when i see that its time to make supper and get off the kit. same thing at gigs really. we're supposed to do two sets of 45 mins at most of our gigs but we try as often as possible to get away with 2 hours - some places just let us play as much as we like. they all pay the same but for me the money i get paid is for the shlep of travelling, setting up and affording the gear...the actuall playing i would do for free (and have way back in the past even paid for that priviledge).

hi billy
sorry to load you up with questions but here's another one...
in the August 1992 issue of modern drummer there was a great and useful article titled: THE 25 GREATEST DRUM RECORDS. because of it i bought steely dan's AJA in a time when i was almost exclusively addicted to AC/DC.
they wrote this article by researching across the industry but in particular they asked some of the top guys for their top ten selections. i'm hoping to do a similar thing here on DW and post the reults in a separate thread eventually.
So if you would be so kind please give us a list of your own top ten (perhaps your current top 10) records/albums. it would be helpful if you identified your favourite out of those and dropped in a line why it is so...but this is not totally necessary. think of it like if you were going to be locked in a remote log cabin for a whole winter, which 10 albums would you take, if 10 were all you could take?
thanks

Hi Nutha,
log cabin records are different choices than what I might think are important records for a drummer to get into. Some of my log cabin records may have NO drumming! :D
Are you sure you want log cabin records?.. or top ten recommended records for drummers?
NUTHA JASON
01-16-2007, 10:32 AM
good point. perhaps the log cabin bit is too strong. this list must be about drumming excellence and inspiration. so...more of a woodshed than a log cabin so to speak.

That's funny for me to see, I'm editing Billy's upcoming instructional right now, and I haven't seen that footage in a couple of years! The new video is all about jazz, so it's also different to see Billy rockin' out - he can do both equally well.
That is a KCon HiDef - it has a Trashformer underneath it and in person sounds fantastic! I thought it sounded a lot better with the Trashformer underneath - he varies the contact with the clutch on the Ride...

Call me crazy, but I prefer the sound of his Sabian set up on the MD fest a few years ago.
Another thing about Billy.
His "hybrid" crosshand technique drives me crazy. I've tried to imitate that technique plent of times because it frees up your left to really get power and articulation. It goes well for a little while, but I've smashed my right thumb so many times with my left stick, that I've given up. Wish I could pull it off, becuase it feels really good.

Meaning, he doesn't actualy cross his hands when playing on the Hats and snare. He leaves enought space to let his left hand move as high, and freely as possible. No restrictions. Many have switched to open handed playing just to free up the left hand. Billy has found a shortcut.
pretty cool video. the youtube link was messing up on me (probably cause im on a wireless connection right now), but i found the original on drummerworld

You rock Billy! You're the Captain Crunch of hi-hat work.
Here's my question:
At your level are you really satisfied with your playing? I find that the better I get, the more I realize that I need to improve in. It's kind of haunting. When I first started drumming I didn't even really think I'd truly become interested in it, I played guitar and I played drums in the school band to pass time and secure my position as guitarist in the school Jazz band. When I got my first drum-set I went "Hey, once I can play basic rock stuff I'll be content!" But, now, a couple years later drums have become more of main instrument to me than the guitar and it seems like I can never reach a satisfying goal cause I'm always pushing myself to be better and better. I'm now at a level that I would have never dreamed of reaching when I started out, and when I look back at anything I've done in the past I cringe...
Is this something that even someone at your insane skill level deals with? Is it possible to be completely satisfied with your playing?

Billy, just taken up drums after a long time out and bug is as big as ever. Amazed with the amount of instruction and videos available on the web and just watched your dvd last night - I wish there had been such dvd's etc when I was younger!!
Anyway I know the dvd is full of great technical stuff, but it is so musical and explained in such an easy way it seems do-able - so it is a great inspiration....although the doing will have to come later! My left foot is saying NO WAY as I write!!
My question since you speak of feel, colour, and experimentation on different instruments and with different 'sticks' (and also since I cannot get an accoustic set at home due to noise) I wondered if you had ever played on an electronic kit and what your opinion of them is. It is not a question based on the fact that I think you would be able to programme the kit to produce weird and wonderful voices, it is just the opposite - the fact that you may not be able to use different parts of the drumhead and invent different sounds the way you do manually on an accoustic kit and build up these colours.
Thanks - all the best!

Hi David,
It's good to be the "something " of hi hats! :D Though, I thought it was Cap'n Crunch (and NOT captain crunch) HAHA!!
And yeah... I pretty much always hate myself. I see flaws in everything. Though, at times, I enjoy the spirit of the music - which makes it (to me) a special drum track or music moment.
But I always wish to improve. Sometimes, the other band members are praising me and I'm cringing with disbelief - wondering if they are "having me on" as the Brits would say..
Thanks! -and keep it up!

In the mid 80s, I was ALL OVER electronic drums. I made my own pads (billy pads- like Billy Beer :D ) and bought one of the earliest simmons SDS7 elect. brains to enter the US. Boy, was THAT a Piece of &#@^!!!
Somewhere around 1985 or '86, I discovered ddrums and went on board with them as an artist (still paid for the stuff, which was ridiculously expensive back then). I enjoyed playing them - played a kti of ddrums on a tour with Bill ?Evans Supergroup. the electronics work best for me if they are doing electronic things - and NOT trying to sound acoustic.
Nowadays, it is always the real deal for me. Though I have a e-kit at my upstate house. it was sent in for an evaluation by me - and the bass drum pad broke before I could even play it! :D HAHA... I won't say the name because I don't want to cause any embarassment fro anyone.
for people who need to keep it quiet, pads are good. BUT... (and it's a big Sophie Tucker kind of but)...the real drum is completely different - so going back and forth could be weird/difficult. But e-drums are fun and they don't drive the other people in or near your house crazy- so I can dig them !!! With good programming skills on an electronic kit, the color concept can go WAY beyond anything that is possible acoustically - THIS is where the fun is for the e-drums in my case. I honestly wish I had a nice set myself for certain times.

Hey Billy - I am not getting any acces to a drum set at the moment and it is driving me mad. Excuse my ignorance but can you explain how to play (what you call) the 28th (or 27th!) rudiment that you played on the dvd? I agree that it is so good that everyone should learn it - so I am (trying)!
On the practice pad I think I am doing it, but won't be happy until I know for sure.
It makes a difference to me when the sticking/technique is explained. For example, the reverse snare thing was fine - but even better when you explained the sticking (i.e. five stroke roll) then I knew it was correct. Thanks.

Everybody does that differently. In my case - it is REALLY slurpy. I basically am playing a five stroke roll - but, instead of two strokes per hand, it is multiple buzzy notes so it's:
(R) single hit on tom
and at the same time: (L) on snareLLLllllllll
followed by (R): (R) on snareRRRrrrrrrr
then: (single hits on snare) L R, R
sounds like - Booodabop Bop!

I wanted to congratulate you on your most recent Modern Drummer article on independence. While I think this was the best MD, from an educational standpoint, in quite a while, it was your humble, honest and "truthful" article which struck the best note. The fact is that independence of limbs is really a myth - and everything is a pattern. You were the only drummer to actually state that.

Hey Billy,
I am trying to find out how to gain an audition with a band that is on a national level,is there a certain circle that i need to get to be a part of to find these auditions? whats the scoop.
I know that i need to put together a press package, i just need to know how to get the package to where it needs to go.

THANK YOU, PAUL! That means alot to me.
Phil, I've written alot about your question. Probably more on my own forum than here - but I'll try to give it up again:
There is no little black book - and there is no secret handshake. The people you are playing with THIS YEAR are the ones that will eventually lead you to getting a better gig. So impress your bandmates by making them inspired to be playing with you - and then, they will champion you when a gig opens up.
it is ALL personal. A press kit will get you a gig touring with a theater company or some other kind of mid-level thing... but you don't get to play with the musical giants because of a press kit.
GOOD LUCK!
and thanks

From your wedding gig and onward! yes. i don't know of any other way. There mightbe some who get there other ways ...and God knows, I could have better gigs as well! :D
Play better - tape yourself, and it will come. You have to listen to the tape and judge harshly - then, you will get bettter - and then the gigs get better (unless you are an awful person! :D)

P.S.Are there any plans to do a clinic close to the Northeast Louisiana in the near future?
Drum clinics are rare around here, the closest clinic featuring any clinician is in Nashville,i think!

And I would like to add to this, if I may, that being a professional doesn't necessarily mean a high level of technical prowess behind the drum kit. It means showing up on time (or way before, preferably), being prepared (knowing the songs) and being in shape (sober) to play the gig.
There many highly skilled musicians who aren't professional because they blow up when things don't go to suit them, or are always late. And some of these folks know it and admit that they just can't be that professional all of the time, so they prefer to do something else in life and play music as a hobby which there is nothing wrong with.
I have had to look myself in the mirror before many road gigs and do the gut check to make certain that I was OK with what I was doing, because this business is all about word of mouth, and that word of mouth is either going to be good or bad...
Sorry if I took too many liberties on your thread, Billy, I just thought that this would be useful info.....
By the way, I still have that K Mastersound that you guys signed for me!

Hi Billy! Could you 'splain the concept behind the signature stick that you had Truline design for you?
I went to the website and it gave me the basic concept behind the Power Grip series, what i am gittin' at is what does your particular design do for you? What led you to create a stick to those specifications?
I am considering buying a brick of these sticks, problem is, there is no dealer within 100 miles of me to go to and try them out,so, i kinda have to rely on word of mouth to get my info.
One last question, do you have any future plans to design a set of cymbals? I am sure that you have a set of sounds in your head that you can have someone like Mark Love @ Sabian create for you!
Peace,

hi Phil,
My Trueline signature drumstick exists because I wanted the size of their jazz model stick (like a 5a ize) in my hand, but the shoulder and tip of the their standard jazz model didn't hold up for me. I need particularly a thicker shoulder (this is the part that goes UP to the tip itself. With a stronger shoulder, I can be more naturally abusive and the stick will survive. So my model has the TG Jazz half in my hand and then going towards the tip it becomes a TG Rock. Simple as that!
I strongly suggest you buy one or two pairs of anything before you buy more! It would be terrible if you ended up hating a large purchase!
Cymbal wise, I am very very happy with what I am playing - and I have been happy for a long time. Back when I was with Sabian, I loved their cymbals (though I was never enthralled with thier jazzier lines). Sabian makes great cymbals. For several years now I have been playing Zildjians and am overwhelmingly happy with their sound and feel. I do experiment quite a bit with Paul Francis, the resident genius of the Z-world. I feel very fortunate to be able to play instruments as good as those.
Thanks!

Hey Billy Ward, one more question. I was reading in the May 2006 MD magazine where you wrote an article for the home studio recording drummer, and noticed that you used the Beta 52, SM57 and an AKG condensor of some sort. I am going to purchase the Beta 52 and SM57, but am wondering what you would recommend for a condensor mic that is cheaper. My budget is fairly low now and am looking for the best bang for your buck at a limit of $175 per condensor. Cheers man.

Hi Mike,
What you saw probably was a Shure KSM 141s.
That is a small diaphrgm mic that basically replaces the sm81. It is much smoother and can do omni as well as cardiod.
I would recommend you looking into a pair of the ksm137s - they are cardiod only version of the 141 that I use so often. Nice as a snare mic too in some applications.
They might be priced a bit above what you are looking to spend though - maybe a pair of those Octava small diaphragms? or may the MXLs sound OK? I don't know. Just edited to add this - Studio Projects mics are made in China, but that company is a very good company that understands audio and cares (it seems to me) more than most. You should check out their lineup and see if there is something there for you. There are so many brands in this price range it is numbing!
You might want to consider checking on evil-bay for a used pair of better mics than the current slew of chinese largge or small diaphrgms. If you buy better ones, then you will never question their abilities and can keep them forever!
ONce you get under around 400- per mic, I don't have first hand experience. Maybe someone else has some suggestions? look around.
Check out www.gearslutz.com. They have a "low end section" (meaning, not expensive!) and I think it is a great website/forum for recording.

Yep.. 13x5 aluminum in black. We're going to swap just as soon as I've got this new drum ready for him. I'm corrupting him into a new snare material muahahaha.. Looking forward to hearing the DW though, would be the first I've owned since I have always been one to try out smaller companies first.

Hmm - I've never seen it in black - only natural! If it really is aluminum, then you have possibly a one of a kind-
Great Snare drum! It can tune high, but try tuning it more in the middle to low... nasty!

I just picked up a 13x5 Steel snare from GC for $60. I got it mainly as a practice snare and for quieter gigs, and because I have a pile of new 13" heads, but no 13" drums anymore.... but I'm really starting to like it. I'm only playing it with a t-shirt on it as a muffle and haven't tuned the mud out of it, but its got potential. I haven't seen your siggy snare, but I'm certainly game for trying it out. Isn't the Steve Gadd siggy similar? Why do you prefer aluminum over other materials?
re: smaller companies ... check out Allegra if you get a chance. I've never been a fan of open jazz tuning, but the Allegra drumsets sound absolutely awesome tuned completely open. Solid tone, warm with lots of character.

Hi John. I am unfamiliar with Steve's snare drum. Aluminum is something you will see alot of studio guys enjoying because it is dry, but has plenty of honk or bonk if you want that as well. Not as ringy as brass. I hope this helps. and yeah, there are a lot of small manufacturers out there these days and lots of great drums are being made! That's really a good thing!

Hey, Billy this is Sam from your own forum.
I have a question about the Big Time dvd. Well, your bassdrum-sound actually.
Recently I've tried the mic setup that you use. It's great.
The only thing I don't seem to get is that supernice meaty kicksound. It's a 'thick' sounding sound with sooooo much bottom end. And with your small kit (those short stack dw's) you also get that great 'doennnnng' sound.
Is that a typical sound for that beta91 (that pzm mic)? I've heard that mic is great for picking up the sound inside the bassdrum.
I find that sound has soooo much bottom end, but yes is controllable.
Help me out here.
All the best

Based on no experience and knowledge whatsoever, I'd say that the woofer might contribute to this.
...or, I could just shut up and let the maestro do the talking. :)

Yes, I know. But in the first part of the dvd ... with his short stack dw's. He doesn't use a woofer. Let's listen what the maestro has to say! :D

I'm about to sell those short stacks for charity (AIDS) - probably on evilbay. I'll try to keep you guys in touch with that when it happens. If in doubt, check my website - it will definitely be posted over there.
Those short stacks have a more meaty sustain because they have such short shells. Contrary to popular opinion, a shorter shell will have far more sustain than a longer shell.
Re: the miking thing and bass drum sound. i think what Sam is describing is mostly, (first) the drum sound itself. That 12 X 20 bass drum is awesome. The mic probably ahs the least to do with the sound. the meaty sustain and focus of the kick sound is probaboly more from my compression on that channel than anything else. Daking compressor - pricey, but the best tracking limiter I've ever used. I have five of them. Also, the room that was recorded in has a very good/happy bottom end. all of these things are factors.
Thanks guys -

six channels of daking with EQ available for the kick and snare mics sounds perfect to me!
It's a lot of dough, but definitely the best gear for the money.
My live or studio kit changes depending upon the gig itself. I will usually use either the 20 or 22 bass drum (most of the time, it's one of the 20s - either 12X20 or 16X20). Might choose no woofer - or a 22 woofer or my 28. Hope this helps!
If you listen to the end of that first solo that starts my DVD, Big Time, you can hear the chain on the bass pedal. this is because of all the compression that I applied to that piece.
You have probably some very nice DW kits stored in your studio. I like the idea of multiple kits ... combining different sizes.
Yeah, Daking ain't that cheap, but it's super. Less is more! Fewer, but better pre's, instead of 24 channels of focusrite stuff.
I never noticed that sound! Put some grease on that chain!!!! :D hahaha

This is a rather serious post that is announcing an upcoming sale of one of my drum kits for charity.
Many of you may know that my sister in law, Meghan Robinson, passed away fifteen years ago after contracting aids. To this day, my wife and I are heartbroken over Meghan’s death.
AIDS AND CHILDREN
Today, there are more than 15 million children orphaned by AIDS. By the year 2010, that number will exceed 50 million. Who will care for, feed, educate, and raise these precious lives? I believe the world needs a greater involvement in the fight against AIDS, the most devastating disease the world has ever faced. We cannot ignore the cries of the three million people who will die of AIDS this year, not to mention the five million more who will contract it. We must do our part to arrest the spread of this horrific disease.
AARON CUSHING
This coming December 26 through January 6, Aaron Cushing, the illustrious webmaster at my website, has informed me that he will be traveling to Ethiopia to work with missionaries who have dedicated themselves to the fight against AIDS. Though the costs of this trip may be high, the return is undeniable. Aaron told me he expects this trip to be a challenging, exhausting, yet life-altering experience for him and his team. Aaron believes that it will have a far-reaching impact in the lives of many people. Our world will be stronger. Aaron and his wife have decided what their roles are in helping this cause.
WHAT CAN I DO? (aka THIS KIT COULD BE YOURS!)
I’ve been thinking of my possible role as well and have decided that the most effective way to raise money to help is for me to auction a DW drum set from my personal collection. But certainly all of you are invited to take your chance on winning this wonderful kit. This drum set is one of a kind. It appears several times in my DVD, “Big Time”. The movie kicks off with a drum solo on radically de-tuned drums. Those are the drums that will be available for purchase. One Hundred percent of the money made from this auction (after shipping expenses) will be sent to Aaron to help his expenses on this trip. The drums are a DW Maple short stack tom kit. The color is a tobacco sunburst with (no longer available) black mini-lugs.
Condition of this kit is near mint to mint. You can view some pics of this kit from the discussion forum of my website:
http://p205.ezboard.com/Billys-kit-to-be-auctioned/fbillywardfrm1.showMessage?topicID=2709.topic
The sizes are as follows:
12 X 20 bass drum with May EA (AKG D112) microphone shock mounted inside.
4 X 12 snare drum
10, 12 and 14 short stack toms (3 total)
The 12” deep bass drum and 12” snare with only 6 lugs are two of the unique qualities of this kit. This kit is a perfect addition to ANY drummer. There isn’t a smaller kit in the world that sounds as mighty on any stage. It was designed to be my local jobbing kit and has been used on a handful of local dates with the likes of Joan Osborne, Leni Stern and Jon Pousette-Dart. (You might remember Pousette-Dart from our appearance at the 2000 MD Fest)
You won’t believe how these drums sound and look! If requested, I will sign each drum of the kit before shipping.
So that’s it. I will try to let you know when it is going to appear on ebay. I expect it to go up on ebay this coming Friday. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please post here or on my own forum and I'll respond.
Thanks-
Billy Ward

Hey pallys... the drums are on EBAY as of last night -and so far, in less than 24 hours, they are listed at $2050.00. Man... I REALLY feel good about this! I am hoping a real player ends up with them (rather than a collector) because these guys need to be played!
Here's the link to the ebay lsiting:

2050$. That's really not expensive. I thought they would be up for like 5000$!

Hi Sam - well, the drums are up to 2800- today! :D
ALSO...
A distinguished member of my forum, Mainely, has jumped in on ebay to sell a Tempus snare drum and all proceeds will additionally go to my webmaster's trip to Eithiopia for AIDS. (same deal as my own kit that I'm selling there)
What is nice about this (besides Mainely’s obvious over the top generosity) is that some of you who couldn’t afford to bid on a drum set may be able to bid on this drum! Tempus makes good drums!
Here is the link to the auction:

Thanks to Bernhard for allowing this sort of announcement.
We're going crazy with the fundraising at my forum!

Hey Billy,
"Big Time" smokes! I was hoping to get some insight regarding the heel tap. Why is it you do this? To keep in time? It seems like one more thing to think about. Actually, I believe that I just don't get it.
Thanks

Hey Erik,
Yeah subdivision....I get it. We have plenty of "subdivision" between our limbs. I don't think that's what Billy is trying to convey. I could be wrong... but after watching the video...again, I didn't find what I was looking for.

Hey Erik,
Yeah subdivision....I get it. We have plenty of "subdivision" between our limbs. I don't think that's what Billy is trying to convey. I could be wrong... but after watching the video...again, I didn't find what I was looking for.
Example... Play a single stroke roll at a brisk tempo. Now, remove your right hand and just play 16th note up-beats with your left. Kinda tricky? Now tap your thigh with your right hand on quarter notes. Suddenly it becomes a lot easier to line up those up-beat notes.
It's the same thing with the heel tap. You're creating more "notes" in order to fill the gaps between actual strokes and to reinforce your time feel. Like Billy said, incorporating mechanisms into your playing is like taking a step back to go two steps forward, but the two steps forward are really worth the effort. The idea is to develop the whole concept to a level where you don't have to think about it.

Hi J/R -
Joan is easily one of the best (and most inspiring) singers I've ever played with. (I like "play" more than "work") She is incredible - and equally incredible as a person, so it is very possible that I will play with her again. That said, I'm outta there for now - too many other projects to pursue for now. I hope you like my Voices DVD - and thanks for asking!

Billy -
I've been watching the MD Festival 2000 DVD a lot lately and have found myself repeating your chapter again and again ... I must say I liked your approach both to the talk and to playing... It is all too easy as "drumming technicians" to forget what purpose technique serves and, in pursuit of more/better chops (or by over-emulating our drum heroes), lose sight of the identity *we* should be bringing to the music... Thanks for the reminder! :-)
I just ordered your new CD, BTW ... really looking forward to it!
Cheers,

Hey there Mr. Hayward -
Most of the time, I am able to maintain what I want with the hat and still use mechanisms with the same heel.
Sometimes, I need the hats to be a VERY exact amount semi-open and in this case the mechanisms move to another place - most frequently, it is the right (Bass drum) heel that chips in then. But, in all honesty, It's kind of like water. Water will simply keep running downstream. That's the way my wiggling is - if one thing stops, then another starts up. It is that automatic for me. I realize that in the beginning, it is not that automatic for you - but once you get to enjoy the benefits (peace of mind and better timing for two benefits) of having mechanisms, you won't want to leave them out - ever.
(and thanks again!)

Got "Voices in my head" and congrats BW on a killer dvd! It really was everything I hoped for and beyond. Allot of content. You revealed so much of where your chops derive, and really give a good breakdown at that jazz (buddy rich) element of drumming that has always dumbfounded me. By slowing down some of that blazing fast stick work I felt like you let me cheat on a test allowing me a peek at your paper. It's going on the ipod, on a loop.
This dvd is a gift to drummers thank you Billy!

Hey Billy,
When I was about 3 years old I remember seeing buddy rich on tv. The hair stood up on the back of my neck and that Christmas I got my first (paper) drum set that lasted about a day and a half.
Your gifted artistry always inspired and excited me the same way. Your chops are genius. Unique, refined and subtle. Trying (trying key word) to get a Billy Ward groove going is what makes the hackles stand up again and just makes drumming enjoyable and challenging.
Ok a bit gushy but it's hearfelt.
Thanks again for the new DVD.

Every one of those little solos was played impromptu - just to get me into the mood to teach! I was completely unaware that it would be a part of the movie!
I was very ill that day (it was a one day shoot and believe me, you heard everything I played and spoke)
As it turns out - those little solos are an important part of the DVD! go figure :)

Hey guys - not sure where to put this, but it's pretty cool. Maybe Bernhard or Mr. Breath can put it where it belongs...
:D
Thought I should hip you to something that I think was really cool. Here's how it happened:
One of the members of my forum suggested we try to play something together.
i was thinking, Cool! i've been daydreaming about doing a drum only record and thought having to mix a whole bunch of drummers would be a great learning experience for me - and even better, for the participants!
So. i suggested a tempo from the free download of play along songs from my trio record, "Out The Door". The song is titled, "Best Buddies". The instructions were to play something to that tempo and then i will put it together.
We had about a dozen participants from ALL over the world. This will be a yearly thing for sure! IT was really fun. You can listen to it by finding the links on my home page:
http://www.billyward.com/
(just scroll down - it's all there.)
And you can also download my mix notes at the same place - they are probably helpful. this taught me a bunch - next year's well be better - more interesting and more lessons! :)
Thought you might like to check it out - it isn't everyday you hear a free form kind of exploding drum thang! i hope you enjoy it! It turned out to be a great teaching tool for all the players! I'm looking forward to next year's hit!

I wanted to let you all know that it's Billy Ward Week on DCTV (http://www.drummercafe.tv). I'm showing footage that I shot during Billy's 5-Star Drum Shop Tour back in 2006. Lot's of good information about the types of wood drum shells. There's also clips from "Big Time" and "Voices In My Head" although many of you have probably already seen this.
I have a new episode every week, so if you want to check out Billy you'll need to watch it some time this week; March 23-29.
Thanks again to Billy and DrumWorkshop for allowing the Drummer Cafe to capture some of his clinic in Nashville.

The MAster Class I'm doing in Chicago Drum Fest is being given in a place where there are no more than 8 students allowed. There ahve been way too many requests, so i think Rob Cook has arranged for two classes to take place -
These are the new times;
10am to 11:20 (could run a bit later..)
and then 11:50 to 1:10 (could run a bit later - but be out by 1;30)
It means I'm a talked-out puppy by 1:30, and i still have to attend the show!
I'll rest during my clinic the next day! HAHA.

Hey - Hope you are all doing well! Can anyone tell me about this "become a friend" stuff? I just agreed to being a friend to two people here, but honestly have no idea what that is in drummerworld/internet-world.
????
thanks!
Hi Billy
Good to hear from you!!
Yes, this friend feature came with the big update of v-bulletin to version 3.7.
You find it in the CP (Control-Panel) above left or also in the Quick Links section above middle right. The new features i give a try are:
Contacts & friends - Social Groups (i gave the Ludwig Club a try) and Pictures & Albums.
Just fun....hopefully

Billy, you really do take drumming to the artistic level. Breaking down the things you don't generally talk about when it comes to music, however explaining characteristics and qualities of drumming that are transcendant and metaphysical with clarity and in an understandable way. Thanks a lot for all you're contributions to the drumming world and welcome to the forum!

I THINK I followed that! :) Clearly though, thanks are in order - Thank You!!!
As soon as the Modern Drum Festival closes, I will be introducing a fun "competition" for drummers in these various forums and hope it leads to some cool experiences for the participants.
thanks!

So make the request and anyone else go for it if you wish - when I receive the notice, I will accept.
I'm sorry to be so slow at t his - I thought having my own website where I write and answer and hang out everyday would be cool.. but I guess it's not enough. I'm in! Hit me with your rhythm stick!

Thanks Blink - but this is really a great forum!
Drummersworld has a more international feel to it than some others and it clearly is run by someone who has no ulterior motives, so I am always thrilled to come by and check out some posts! Sometimes I feel a negative here - but it is always simply that there are too many choices of where to roam - there are so many interesting threads at times, I run out of time with my reading! Here's to you Bernard - and Mr. Breath and all who contribute! :D

Billy, it was fantastic to meet you this weekend at MD Festival 2008. You are probably one of the funniest people on the bill at the festival! I found your performance to be truly inspiring. You had such finesse and styling playing the kit and I'm definitely gonna be ordering me some mallets with shakers in them!! And of course, Voices.
Shaker Dude was awesome too. He should come out and make appearances more often HAHAHA.
All the best Billy, see you again sometime soon. We're neighbors!

Hey Pat! Say hi to Chieli for me. it's been a while since I've seen that crazy Italian - he's a great guy!
I'm going to Nashville tomorrow for a week working on a record at Ocean Way - a really fun record with an artist named Chris Shinn.
Have a great time!
i dont know how to say it, but your playing touches people who even dont play drums.
my girlfriend said that you are the "best" drummer she saw on my tv screen, she likes to watch these drumming dvds with me, crazy right.
and she said that she likes you the most, because of your feel.
i guess thats we would like to hear, inspiring people who are not playing any instrument.

Hey folks,
I have two “Christmas presents” available at my website starting sometime tomorrow, December 24th (and onward):
One is the audio from my Trio’s final day of rehearsal for the MD Drum Fest. It comprises of 8 songs, recorded simply but accurately through two mics.
The other is a video download of some of the songs from our long set at The Cutting Room in New York City, taped two days before our Festival appearance.
Each of these two downloads displays a lot of what I am doing when I play this music than perhaps anything else that’s ever been out there in public!
I am very excited about these two releases and hope you check them out. They are available as “pay what you want” downloads (ala Radiohead).
I also posted something like this in the general area, so mods, please delete if there is anything inappropriate.
There will be a link on my home page, but right now, you can view it here: http://www.billyward.com/index_trio.html
Thanks, and Happy Holidays!

Your drumming in "Voices in My Head" is superb. It's great to see you here man, keep up the great work.
By the way, I'm mostly a Rock and Funk drummer with a little Progressive in there, but I've always liked Jazz, could never get the pocket thing though, which is essential for that Jazz feel, do you have any tips for developing a feel for Jazz? I'm currently studying Ted Reed's Progressive Steps to Syncopation, but not sure how I can play it to deleop a better groove at jazz which is what I'm looking for. Well, hope you get what I'm trying to ask here!
Thanks in advance.

No, no, not at all man! I wrote *DRUMMER* like that to point out the fact that most of us are drummers and as such we should know who Billy Ward is. Still, it happens :P but it can't be fun for Billy to have 50% of the people who post on his thread mention Black Sabbath!
And I have nothing against Bill Ward. Big part of Black Sabbath.

I'm not really a jazz drummer - just a drummer who made a DVD about jazz in efforts to help rock guys.
sorry, Dio is way out of my league. Maybe someday when I grow up and become more famous.

Guz - I was hoping for a better story about the name!
I'm very good with the bill ward/billy ward thing. no biggie. In the early nineties, when I was strictly a studio drummer, it was more ...uh, itchy and scratchy. I'd be at a music store and somebody would suddenly light up and start taking pics... and then I'd have to tell them that I'm NOT Bill Ward from Blk Sbth - it was always kind of a moment where I wanted to tell the truth, but I also didn't want to deflate that person's sudden happiness!
It could be worse... what if I was named Steve Gadd? :D

Hey Billy,
Recently picked up your "Voices in my Head" DVD, and I have to say, it is up there with my all time favorite instructional materials. Your approach to teaching/explanation is excellent. Thank you for sharing your unique approach to jazz drumming with the community. You have truly been an inspiration for me,... my playing definitely improved after watching Big Time, and I look forward to the advancements i hope to make from "Voices". I don't know if it would be possible, but I make it to the winter NAMM nearly every Jan.... Is a private lesson even feasible with your schedule around the time of NAMM? Would be honored to sit down for an hour with you sometime. Thanks again for the great wealth of info,.. on the DVD's and here in the forums.

thank you so much! I have to admit, I need feedback - because doing videos and writing (and basically caring) about others' progress is a bit of work. So thanks for lifting me up tonight, here, in a rainy New York City.
and Jay, while I missed this last NAMM show (and probably a whole ton of shows this year - from Musikmesse through all the festivals because of my wife's illness) i DO hope to attend NAMM 2010. If I am there, you can find me and we can at least try to do something together in the DW booth at the very least.
thanks again!
Speaking of drummers with same names I feel sorry for the drummer of Geezer Butler's band GZR. He's called Chad Smith. xP

Just want to say I'm anxious about receiving Big Time soon! Boy I can feel it now ;)
I'm a huge Sucherman fan and in M&M he recommended very highly delving into Jazz also as a rock-drummer! ...I figured "Billy Ward" is clearly the way to go for that matter!!
I know Big Time isn't probably going to much into the Jazz thing (I assume that, that is) but I think it's just right to get to know you and your playing a little bit more...
And there's always "Voices", right?!
Thanks Billy!
