Matt tong from bloc party.
Love the musicality of his beats, he compliments bloc party's music very well.
Easily one of my favourite and most influential drummers.
The only problem is it's hard to find video's of him, and he never seems to be mentioned in drum magazines. Quite annoying, would be cool to read an interview or watch a few youtube clips of him.

Dave Douglas; was the drummer for Reliant K, for a good while but left about a year ago I believe. There isn't much info on him on the web either, which I don't like. But I love to play with the former songs he did.

I listen to a boat load of jazz music. Here are my picks for underrated jazz drummers. Sorry if any of these are repeats -

Donald Bailey
Ed Blackwell
John Riley
Paul Motian
Jerry Granelli
Shadow Wilson
Jimmy Cobb
Jeff Ballard
Earl Carter
Joey Baron
Gene Lake
Colin Bailey
Albert Tootie Heath
Matt Wilson
Shelly Manne
Kenny Clarke
Joe Dukes

Man I could go on and on. Another drummer who I think is so underrated is Raymond Pounds. His stick work with Stevie Wonder on "Songs in the Key of Life" and with the band Afrique was supremely funky.
I agree with a lot of these guys, especially Donald Bailey and Ed Blackwell, but Im gonna say that in the jazz world, jeff ballard is not underrated, I go to a jazz school and he is ALL the rage, to the point where Ive heard so much of him, honestly it doesnt do much for me anymore, hes a great player, but definitely not underrated.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned Charles Mingus drummer, Dannie Richmond. Some of his left hand playing (like on Boogie Stop Shuffle) is really sensitive.

[QUOTE=Stoney;601242]No way is Matt Cameron under rated!! Not where I come from anyway. A fair few of my friends are heavily influenced by him. Including myself to some degree.

For me, the people I know don't have a clue who Matt is. You don't really hear or read about him. But it's good to hear he influenced you and your pals.

Oh, and how is Tommy Lee Under-rated?

People don't rave about tommys playing as much as they do about his personal life. His set ups are chessy but the man can play. Seing him play the first time gave me a whole lot of encouragement to keep on going.

Sorry if this's a repeat. Prairy Prince, drummer with The Tubes probably tops my list of underrated drummers. Paul Kersey from Canadian rock band, Max Webster, comes in a close second. Played a great drum "duet" with Neil Peart live on the Max Webster track, Battlescar. Both Prairy and Paul are my kind of quietly innovative drummers offering real power and a funk edge to their rock playing. And yes, they usually "Keep It Simple"!!

Forgive me if I posted this again, but in my humble opinion,Frank Beard of ZZ Top is very underrated. But maybe he just doesn't seek all the publicity others do. Not sure.

The guy went to high school about an hour away from me in the 60's and cut his drumming teeth in a strip club in Dallas playing drums. He was in several bands with Dusty Hill then they teamed up with the Rev. Willie G. and the rest, they say, is history. His shuffle is legendary around these parts. LOL

Just the group's longevity is amazing. They've been at it for over 35 years. Back in the day, in 1976 or 77 they played an arena in my home town and had live cattle onstage! I was 15 and was sitting in the balcony with a friend and my ears were still ringing the next day they were so loud. The first set Billy and Dusty wore white rhinestone suits and white hats. Second set they came out wearing blue jeans, worn boots, and straws. My friend and I sat back and enjoyed the bottle of rum we snuck in and eyeballed the chicks! Good times!!

man i don't normally mark out to anyone but i have to throw casey grillo in this mix !
unfortunatly most will never see him do more than what hes does in kamelot . but during this clinic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=si8_M1bgO4g he did so much more including some latin beats . also can lay down some nice big band sound ! also an all-a - round nice guy and patient teacher to my daughter .
if you watch the video you can see my daughter at the end of the isle with the green shirt . this clinic is what got her started .

Patrick Keeler, of The Greenhornes and The Raconteurs.

I completely agree with this. He has a really cool style that I'm yet to hear anywhere else.

My addition would be Kris Myers from Umphrey's McGee. Perfect parts, seamless execution, perfect groove, great chops and use of them... He's probably what I would call the perfect drummer.

I think that the Staus Quo-drummer, Matt Letley is a very under-rated drummer.

The beats he play is simple but he always adds some little things to it, to spice it all upp.

I have seen him live 4 times and the solo he does in the middle of the concert is always of very high quality.

Here is a sample:

Jason McGerr of Death Cab for Cutie. I just watched him on DVD at a 2006 drum convention (can't remember name of the DVD), but the dude was on stage doing increadible things.

He started off on just a snare drum doing rudiments and flam combinations. A bit later his tech brought out the bass drum. He did a snare / bass combo thing which was amazing. A bit later the tech brought out the hats. Then the floor tom and a ride cymbal, followed by the ride tom, and another cymbal. McGerr is incredible!

After showing his diversity, he stepped off the kit and simply talked a bit about his philosophy to drumming which made perfect sense.

What amazed me about his technique was it's foundation in traditional rumimental drumming, covering flams, paradiddles, etc. I looked him up today on Wikipedia and learned he taught at the Seattle Drum school, which now makes perfect sense and helps explain his traditonal approach.

Next paycheck I have to buy some Death Cab for Cutie CDs just to hear him play.

good one! i almost added him to this thread myself!

he's probably not so well known because he's kind of a quiet, in the background type of drummer, but he does some very rhythmically interesting things with death cab. i love listening to their music and picking out the cool things he does. sometimes you'll hear him reference other drummers by playing things they're famous for. he's super smart and knows everything about the instrument.

Aaron Harris of Isis is simply one of my favorite drummers. He is so talented in my opinion and hardly anybody knows who he is I feel.

The greatest part about him is he is entirely self taught, no lessons, teachers, anything. His timing is ridiculous at points and he doesn't go crazy on huge fills, just little things that accent the music.

He's phenomenal.

Patrick Wilson from Weezer is very under-rated, a lot of people think that he sucks, but ive seen them live a couple of times, and when he plays songs live he adds more complex drum fills

But dill X, back to what u said about larry mullen jr. i think that guy has to be pretty good, the stuff he plays on U2 albums is nothing special, but wasnt he tought by somebody who was considered to be the best drummer out of ireland? he has to be some what of a monster on the set.

just because he tooks lessons from a good player doesn't mean anything at all. Talent doesn't transfer.

Yes! Chad is great. I never realized how much influence I took from him subconsciously, just through listening to so much Live when I was younger. I dusted off my copy of Secret Samadhi the other day and had forgotten how much I love that album.

Me three. I never worked out why Praire Prince wasn't mentioned in the same breath as the usual drum idols. Apart from having mucho chops he's composed some compelling drum lines. His playing on the first few albums was amazing. I guess the music was a bit too out there for broad acceptance.

It's a shame they went commercial after the first few albums but they were running up serious bills with their live shows.

Do you know Keisuke Komori?

This guy is kind of a Japanese Vinnie Colaiuta in terms of technique and articulation, but he has also a particular approach to drums, and a very personal sound.

He has played with many Japanese musicians (mostly in progressive and fusion bands), but it seems that he hasn't been involved in musical projects outside of his country (which may be the reason he isn't famous in the Western side of the world).

Don't be impressed by the size and configuration of his kit, this guy's a monster! Not only he does every kind of zappa-esque subdivisions and very weckl-esque phrasings, but also has great double bass drum chops (a la Bozzio/Donati).

Here you can listen to him with TriOffensive, one of the bands he plays in:
http://www.myspace.com/trioffensive

His personal website (too much Japanese!):

Well My first nominee would be myself. seriously under rated lol. Im jk. But seriously Gary Mallaber is one of em. Played drums on Steve Millers "fly like an eagle" album. The great part about all the drum tracks on that album are that they all sound relatively strait forward and simple but there soooo not. Really good rhythms. If you haven't actually sat down and really heard what he is playing check it out.

Some people tend to focus on Tommy's outspoken life, showmanship above his drumming style. He has great fills, bass drum triplets, power and endurance on his playing, specifically on records such as: Too Fast For Love, Shout At The Devil, Theatre Of Pain, Girls Girls Girls...

Sorry I haven't read the whole thread but here are my picks:
-Chad Kent- Atomship (some of the most creative and complicated rock drumming ever)
-Steve Judd- Karnivool (intricate drumming and groove that is even more amazing when you
realize that he is doing more than what you first thought +odd times)
-Joe Thibodeau- Kristian Stanfill (nobody has probably heard of him since it's a Christian
artist but he has some really creative grooves)
-Nathan Folowill- Kings of Leon (Once again, creativity prevails)
-Steve Bowman and Jim Bogios- Counting Crows (both have played for the Crows and are
often overlooked despite great playing)
-Mario Duplantier- Gojira (super double bass drumming and good grooves and shuffles)

He has great fills, bass drum triplets, power and endurance on his playing, specifically on records such as: Too Fast For Love, Shout At The Devil, Theatre Of Pain, Girls Girls Girls...I'm going to come out of hiding and chime in with you here. Not only does he play cool beats with really tasty fills. His meter is just rock-solid, and it's super groovy. I've always loved his drumming. I wish he'd have played in a more serious band where it wouldn't have been so hard to recognize what a great player he is.

I drag out The Uplift Mofo Party Plan often. I agree....saw JI with Pearl Jam in the late 90's and whilst he was ok, he didn't blow me away. His one and only RHCP album is awesome. Man I wish there were more recordings of that line up with Jack and Hillel Slovak........his playing just comes alive in that context. Definitely my favourite Chili Peppers album and Jack's playing on it is a big part of the reason why. It's a great prelude of the things to come with Chad.

I'll give my answer by quoting others...

"Starr is vastly underrated. The drum fills on the song "A Day in the Life" are very complex things. You could take a great drummer today and say, 'I want it like that.' He wouldn't know what to do." - Drummer Phil Collins

Ian Fraser Kilmister of Motorhead- "Ringo's the most underrated drummer in the history of rock and roll."

Yoko Ono - "Ringo is the most underrated drummer in the industry! His drumming is like life—it gives you the most solid beat. When he drummed on my Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band album, I was totally amazed that he had no difficulty in following the very complex improvisational vocals I did – again, no overdubs. I think his incredible drumming was what made so many great Beatles songs possible. We thank you, Ringo!"

Without a doubt in mind it has to be Richie Hayward, famed drummer for Little Feat (RIP) is one of the many underrated drummers out there. He finally got recognition at the Grammy's this year, sadly it was a long time coming and after his death. When I really want a good workout/practice session I still sit down and (try) to play along to the entire double CD set of Waiting For Columbus. I suggest that if you have not heard him or even of him to check out some of his stuff, you will not be disappointed...I had the pleasure of seeing Little Feat live twice, before Lowell George passed away, phenominal shows I will never forget. Richie was one of my inspirations for playing..Still is....

Let's see, off the top of my head: John Bishop, Alan Jones, Matt Jorgensen, Gregg Keplinger, Carlton Jackson, Mel Brown, Stephen Pancerev, Steve Korn, Mike Snyder, Tim Rap, Charlie Doggett, Reinhard Melz, Tim Paxton, Ken Ollis, Ji Tanzer, Ron Steen, Mel Brown, Gary Hobbs, Byron Vannoy, Jason Palmer, Tyson Stubelek, Kevin van Gheem, Mike Peterson. Those guys are all great. There are probably a couple of dozen more obvious ones that are escaping me at the moment.

+1 on Richie Hayward. With Little Feat he was a monster groove funkmiester. He also played with lots of other people, including Robert Plant. If you want to see what Richie's influence can do to a song, there is a youtube vid of Linda Ronstadt singing :"You're no Good"live on the old Midnight Special, with Richie on drums, and Skunk Baxter on congas.Listen to that and then listen to the studio verson, which Richie does not play on.The difference is amazing.

Brian Viglione, his work with The Dresden Dolls is amazing, very musical drumming, I would love to see more people talk about him.

Agreed! he really is something else

Hes radical man! if your into that check out the drummers from: russian circles, rosetta and if these trees called talk

It really is some of the most amazing drums I've heard

Specially after a few caps and brews

I don't know if he's known much outside of Todd Rundgren fans, seeing as how he gave up drumming to help run his dad's burger restaurant chain (!), but I always loved Kevin Ellman's playing on the first Utopia album, especially Freedom Fighters and The Ikon. Apparently Neil Peart could often be seen at Utopia shows checking out Ellman's chops.

Steve Jordan is kind of underrated, atleast by mainstream drummers. They don't understand his sense of timing and groove. They're damaged by mainstream drummers like Jordison and Ulrich...

And also, Ronnie Vannucci of The Killers, is very underrated. I like him. Just look at his set and cymbals - AMAZING!

Patrick Carney from The Black Keys saw them live last year and he had a beautiful green Ludwig kit like Bonhams but no sparkle , 1 up 2 down but his one floor tom was on his left side other on the right looked good though .
His drumming is soulful , funky , and rocking on all of their albums . Been listening to them since Rubber Factory on and they haven't done one bad album yet .

well he sounds pretty good recording overdubs on drum parts over overdubs i guess. he's made a living for years doing that. i don't think he has done any good straight no overdub playing since the first two/three albums.

Considering that Jon Christensen is the only Norwegian drummer known well enough to be featured on here, I`d say a lot of my professial drumming countrymen.

Paolo Vinaccia, really an Italian, definetly belongs right on the top.

Martin France - THE British jazz drummer de jour. Can't believe he's not featured on DW - he is featured on so many recordings.

Agreed also, it is funny I seldom think of him when someone asks who I admire. His taste and unique creativity always catches my interest. Representing the Mambo, and Let it Roll, were my favourites. I remember hearing a female disc jockey doing a day after the show review, she said, great band, "amazing drummer", and went on to embellish about him instead of the whole band. How often does a comment like that outside the drummers circle happen on commercial radio?

One of the most under-rated drummers in my opinion has to be Chris Pennie from Dillinger Escape Plan/ Coheed & Cambria. His technique is second to none. Though he isn't particularly a groover and most of his stuff are Drum N Bassy he's really influenced me recently and my technique is starting to get better by using his tips. I already have a good technique. But I feel it's getting better because of him.

Another drummer is Ben Koller from Converge. He's one of the very few drummers in Mathcore who uses a single pedal (though, he does have a double too) and makes the drumming sound awesome. I really like his drumming!

Also, I'm not much into metalcore etc. etc. but Mathcore is amazing and really skillful (I'm abit of a prog head too which probably boosts).

Jay Dee Daugherty from the Patti Smith Group. the only member who has been on every project. even right hand man Lenny Kaye sat out when husband Sonic Fred Smith came onboard.

Marky Ramone. a MONSTER. Road To Ruin and Rock And Roll High School Soundtrack.

Elvis Costello's drummer with the Attractions. both slammin' and tasty. Chelsea anyone ?

Ronnie's an awesome drummer, the killers was the first concert i ever attended and the energy he gave off from behind the drums was what made me want to learn to play the drums.

those craviotto drums are gorgeous, my dream kit right there.

Poppa Jo Jones is one of the most underrated and one of the best drummers of all time.

I couldn't agree more! I think that if you compare any jazz music before and after the Basie band got popular you can clearly hear Papa Jo's rhythmic influence. Papa Jo standardized the role of the drummer for big band, particluarly the swinging hihat beat. He was also the drummer that every other drummer of that time period credited as a foundational influence. Despite all that, he often gets overlooked in favor of flashier drummers like Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa when people talk about the most important drummers of that era.

I have a post on my blog about Papa Jo and some elements of his style that I really admire. Check it out at:

Actually there was a issue of "DRUM!" magazine with Chad Smith on the cover which had a little section on Ronnie's solo project, Big Talk, though it didnt concern his drumming as much as his other involvement with the group (he's doing all the vocals, guitar, drums, bass, and Keys in it)

+1; As I am sure you know......former drummer of Chicago. His current band, CTA is smoking and plays the old Chicago stuff like the original band back in the late 60's and throughout most of the '70's (before they turned into the sappy love band that most people associate them with!). They have a new cd coming out soon; it should be very good!

Thanks. I'll look forward to hearing his new album. Yeah, That's the Chicago I like, the older stuff. That's odd how he co-founded the band and now he is the former drummer.

Yea, I've heard the stories of him supposedly "losing his chops" and that was the reason. Not sure I buy that at all. I've seen him live a few times since he started playing again (after a long layoff; 15 years maybe?). He may not be quite as fast as he once was, but his chops and groove are every bit as impressive as they always were! He has put together a great back; Marc Bonilla, on guitar really cooks!

There are 4 who I feel are sometimes overlooked....

John Densmore - wonderful taste and feel, although over the last few years he's been getting more of a mention.

Billy Ficca (Television) - He's a got a great, loose style and it seems like he creates patterns on top of patterns. His hi hat work on Marquee Moon is fantastic.

Pick Withers (Dire Straits) - I've only just got into this guy, he's very understated but has some great fills. There's a few fills on Tunnel Of Love which really stand out for me.

Seb Rochford (Polar Bear) - There aren't many who've heard of him, he's got strange technique but he's by far the best drummer I have ever seen live.

British jazz drummers generally. In particular I can't believe that Martin France doesn't have a presence on DW! He is THE contemporary British jazz drummer and is on more records than you can shake a stick at.

I was just listened to the short-lived funk/metal/rock outfit Mammal, and their drummer Zane Rosanoski is really amazing. Nothing to complicated, but it really fits the music, shame they broke up.
