Hi there
I have a tama rockstar which i bought second hand and the person i bought it off didnt kno the age.... i was just wondering is there anyway 2 tell the age or edition? cos i herd that tama bought out a few editions and that rockstars were around for a while before being replaced by the superstar so i was wondering what edition mine might be.
I see the new ones (before they were replaced by the superstar) came with stands with mounts for the floor tom whereas my rockstar has just a normal tom with feet.
so can someone PLLLLEEEAAASSSEEEE help me as im quite lost and would like 2 know some Tama Rockstar History and find out just how old my kit is? is there anyway to tell its edition or year?
THANKS HEAPS!

hi, this is definitely a rockstar kit from back in the 80's. I have a similar set. But there were numerous different editions like rockstar, rockstar dx, rockstar pro (painted shell), rockstar em and so on. On their homepage Tama now have a good history section with scanned old advertising material. You'll definitely find a kit similar to yours somewhere...

check out 1988-1990 or so

i have a 1990 rockstar dx and your lugs look similar to mine. My wrap and badges were removed (be previous owner) and i do not have the tom mounts (i use a snare stand), but basically he knew he bought it between 1989 and 1990. I looked on tamas website and looked at the catalog pictures. Mine matches the Rockstar DX from the picture i saw. The Rockstar DX has an 8 lug kick, while the pro has a 10. Im sure there are other differences as well.

i wanted to know the wood composition -- which happened to be an interior of Basswood and an exterior of Philipiene Mahogony.

I really bumped this thread, just because I didn't want to make a new one to keep the forum clean.

I was just doing research for the age of my own Tama Rockstar aswell. Finally I found out that the only Tama Rockstar that looks like mine is a Tama Rockstar Custom from 2000...
I looked at the color of the badges, the color of the rim on the BD, the number of lugs and the style of the tom-holder. Everything matches, but I am still not sure.
I would think a Rockstar Custom costs more than a regular one, and still I paid only €600 for everything you see in the picture below.
So: Am I in posession of a great drumkit for the price, or am I mistaken?

I have this kit, mine are double bass 22s toms go from 10" to 18"

They are 1988 Tama Rockstars

they are farrrrrrrrr better than the the new Rockstars

i also own a set of 1995 Pearl Exports
and a set of 2007 Mapex Orion Classics

only the Orion Classics are close as far as quality IMO

you can buy a brand new Tama Rockstar Kit with 1 less tom than i have for $800 ,
the 1988 Rockstars I have you couldnt buy used for that,

they are 1988s bro.... and they are Beast

ask Lars Ulrich, Dave Lombardo and Nick Menza
they still use the 88s as there drum of choice

They are not 1988 drums.Rockstar drums from 88 had seperate lugs. Those are Rockstar DX 1990 with high tention lugs..Really good sounding drums when tuned properly.Shells were mosly mahogney/poplar with an inner ply of basswood.Good luck.
