Ok, don't know if this thread (or something almost the same) has been done before. Just say your favourite drummers best moments
mine are
Mark Brzezicki- the build up of Porroh Man by Big Country
Taylor Hawkins- all of In Your Honour
Shannon Larkin- the chorus of "I Am"
Lars Ulrich- The double time bit on "One" on S&M
Dave Mackintosh- the end of Through the fire and the flames
Ryan Videkal- the groove on "money Buys" by Nickelback
Martin Lopez- all of "Windowpane"
and many more that i can't think of
NUTHA JASON

john bonham - the triplet fills at the end of the crashy guitar solo from 'dazed and confused OR the first measure after the latin bit of 'fool in the rain' (you know that shuffle heaven plus the fill he plays)...naw heck there's more moments than i can describe here.
roger taylor - the end bit of the great king rat song.
vinnie coulita - the whole groove of seven brides for seven brothers
charlie watts - anybody seen my baby , the groove at the drop down after the first chorus.

Alan White - his fill in Real Love (Yes) at 6:29 ... the sickest fill I've ever heard in my life! And also all his playing on the song Silent Spring from the same album, Talk
actually, come to think of it, he's the only drummer that still puts me in awe with his perfect placement of the perfect fills. I can name so many more spots like those from his entire discography
Edit: oh yeah and I absolutely love Questlove's playing on The Seed 2.0 from the Roots Phrenology album. His parts are just absolutely perfect!

Neil Pearts solo from "A show of Hands" on his white drum set comin out of YYZ. In my opinion its the greatest solo in history.

Gadd - Late in the evening
This song floored me with groove the first time I heard it and never fails to leave a smile on me face everytime I hear it!
Omar Hakim - Intro to High and Mighty by John Scofield.
An absolute killer shuffle groove, if you haven't heard it check it out here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000321M/104-1171253-1338358?v=glance&n=5174 Awesome!

Bill Bruford : The slow drum'n bass portion of Heart of the Sunrise
Phil Collins : Robbery Assault & Battery : groove during the keyboard solo (2:35) and cymbal work (3:20)
Neil Peart : Apart from all his intricate work, I'd pick one of his simplest songs, "Vital Signs". Every stroke is just at the right place in that one. The little hi-hat groove (3:06) at the end, with the BD variations and fills getting busier and busier as the crescendo evolves is awesome,

[B]charlie watts - anybody seen my baby , the groove at the drop down after the first chorus.

Peart: The beat he lays down at the end of bravado, and the Intro to One little victory
Bonham: Intro to The Crunge and When the Levee Breaks
Ginger Baker: On the Royal Albert hall 2005 concert, during Toad, I really like the grove he lays down at 5:50ish
And i'll have to agree with shuffle about Bruford on Heart of the Sunrise
I'll second that.
theduke86
05-08-2006, 03:44 AM
Tony Williams- the whole Agitation solo (17 when he recorded it)
Questlove- the drum and bass bit off of the first track on the Philadelphia Experiment
Elvin Jones- Fill into the last chorus of "Sing me softly of the blues" (i can't ever remember the name) on John McLaughlin- After the Rain.
Jeff Almeyda

Joe Morello: The Brubeck live album at Carnegie Hall. Joe himself is very proud of this one.
JR Robinson: "Higher Love" and "The Finer Things" with Steve Winwood.
Manu Katche: "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel. Absolute perfection in a drum track.
Gene Hoglan: "Sh**tstorm" by Strapping Young Lad. Two surface riding over double bass 16ths at 230 BPM with left hand lead thrown in for good measure. Most people don't even believe it's a human actually playing the track.

Gene Hoglan: "Sh**tstorm" by Strapping Young Lad. Two surface riding over double bass 16ths at 230 BPM with left hand lead thrown in for good measure. Most people don't even believe it's a human actually playing the track.
It's an absolutely hilarious song, too. Just the first verse has me in absolute stitches, it's the best parody of the ideal metal-listening mindset I've ever encountered.
Just a few stand-outs for me:
Matt Chamberlain: "Liquid Diamonds" by Tori Amos. Matt plays over a drum machine and actually has the smarts to play fills where the loop is part of the fill! Have a listen and see what I mean, it's a really cool drum track.
Danny Carey: "Pushit" and "jimmy" by Tool. Eh, I'm a Tool fan. 'nuff said.
Elvin Jones: He gets three, and they're just the bits that really do it for me right now - 1) "Resolution" from A Love Supreme (John Coltrane), 2) "Alabama" from Live At Birdland (John Coltrane) and 3) "Blues Dream" by Bill Frisell from "With Dave Holland and Elvin Jones".
Vinnie Colaiuta: "five-five-FIVE" by Frank Zappa from Shut Up 'N Play Yer Guitar, "Seven Days" by Sting from Ten Summoners Tales.
Morgan Agren: "Bouncing in a bottomless pit" and "On a crater's verge" from Fredrik Thordendal's album Sol Niger Within.
I'll second Duke's call on Tony Williams/Agitation, and add the solo in Inspirations of Love (Tony Williams Lifetime, from the otherwise rather not-cool "Million Dollar Legs") for further consideration.
Art Blakey: "If I should lose you" by Hank Mobley really does it for me, for some reason.
Matt Johnson: "Dream Brother" by Jeff Buckley.
Joey Baron on just damn near everything. I can't pick, seriously folks. I'd either have to list about fifty things or none at all. The first thing I could find that absolute blows me away is "Piram" by Masada from Live In Middelheim, but I'd be just as happy throwing in something like "Speedfreaks", "The Prestidigitator" or "The Ways Of Pain" by Naked City (all from Grand Guignol, I believe, but you can find them all on The Black Box) or even the stuff he did with David Bowie. It's all good, he's so full of life, vitality, power and humour that it makes me want to leap out of my chair and bounce off the walls.
Bill Bruford: "Heart of the Sunrise" by Yes or the live version of "Easy Money" by King Crimson on "The Nightwatch".
John Bonham: "When the Levee Breaks", naturally. That and "Achilles Last Stand".
Billy Cobham: "One Word" by the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Thomas Haake: "Soul Burn" by Meshuggah.
Chris Pennie: "When good dogs do bad things" by the Dillinger Escape Plan. He's done cooler things, but never in such a good song. Heh.
?uestlove: "Proceed" by The Roots from The Roots Come Alive... or "It's Comin" by The Roots feat. ELO (probably not *THAT* ELO) from The Beginners Guide To Understanding The Roots Volume 1.

has anyone heard godsmack's new album, "IV"?
its mind bogglingly good and Larkin's drumming is phenomenal. it really is, a new greatest moment for him would have to be the chorus for "Temptation" of their new album. it sounds like he's got 12 arms.

The Louie Bellson video of his concert he did in Switzerland. The solo in the last song is great. That soft roll he does on the snare is awesome. Oh baby, that is a cool solo.

Regarding Strapping Young Lad's Sh**storm

Even the band's name is funny, especially after you see them
I really like this thread, BTW, and it's gotten me to buy a few new CD's
Cool.
Have you ever heard of Victor Baileys' "Low Blow". Omar Hakim plays an incredible groove on it... I can't find out what he is doing!

Tim Alexander : Over The Electric Grapewine.

Tony Williams : To Whom it may concern-Them........blasting insanity as soon as he gets his ride working, + the solo of Joy Fill Summer
Ian Paice : Mandrake Root (live on BBC 1970), Space Truckin (Made In Japan...check out his insane fill at the end of the cotcot bass playing)

Thomas Haake : I, from 3:35 until 7:40 it can't be a man behind the set !!!!

A few from Buddy Rich...
• From the early BR recording of "West Side Story Medley" - The transition from "Somewhere" to a fast 3/4 tempo, using a press roll as the device
• The blazing fill, followed by a "blazing moment of silence" in the obvious big single-stroke fill at the end of "Love For Sale".
• The brilliant use of empty space 4 bars before the Bari solo, in Channel One Suite.
• The interplay between Buddy, the bassist, and the band, at the "build-up" sections, just before and after Buddy's solo on "Midnight Cowboy Medley"
• The massive driving force of Buddy's playing on the tune "Red Snapper", from the album "The Magic of Buddy Rich"

I have to make one addition to my list.
Mark Brzezicki's playing on "the sailor" by big country is absolutely astonishing. its one of those drum lines you have to listen to carefully to catch all the things he does and see how deceptively complex it is.

That one knocks me out too. I'd also add the live recording of "Come Back To Me" with Sammy Davis. Love the energy of the whole song but the fills are killer.

^That. I swear, I love Johnny Rabb, but in this solo, he proves so many of his playing techniques (Freehand, drumbals etc..) are so much more than just mere gimmicks, it's really truly inspiring to see someone as forward-thinking as Rabb in top form.

*Phew* Luckily I made a search first - was thinking about starting a thread on this subject.
Will probably have to return with more "great moments" - these are the first that comes to mind:
Porcaro - That fill in "Africa" from the live recording (1990 something) and when the Roseanna groove starts (Toto IV)

Chris Tsagakis of the Rx Bandits-The intro to "In Her Drawer." Most of his stuff great, so have a listen of you're interested.
Mitch Mitchell-Manic Depression. A lot of his stuff is great, of course.
Whoever drummed and played percussion for David Holmes' compositions for the Ocean's ## series did a great job as well.

Mitch Mitchell-Manic Depression.
My favorite Hendrix Experience song. I love how he goes crazy then attempts to defy physics (twice), only to have his sticks defeat him in the end with a notable *click*
