Kidding. Awesome. There's just nothing more to be said, there is a truly excellent Bonham replica, green sparkle is a stunningly nice finish, it just works! Lovely cymbal selection and everything is present and correct; except that 24" ride and the cowbell.

I thank everyone for such great responses. I am glad you like the kit, I value everyones opinion on this web site. Thanks again. My ride cymbal is a 22" Sabian Dry Ride, I definately want to get the Paiste 2002 24" ride. And also the hi-hats are Zildjian New Beats and of course I am wanting the Paiste Sound Edge. I don't just want these cymbals because of Bonham but I truely love the sound of them. I am very impressed with the Paiste crash cymbals, they are the first Paiste's I have ever owned. I have been playing this set-up now for about 25 years (not this kit but the configuration), It just fits in with my style and most importantly it is the only set up that I am very comfortable with. Someone asked if they were Maple Classics and yes they are. Thanks again.

Hey what's up! I finally got these pictures up I am glad you like the kit. You definately gotta get a kit like this, they are so much fun to play. It is definately the best sounding kit I have ever owned, and this is coming from a former Pearl Masters Custom owner. The cymbal stand arm is incredible, for years I have always used a boom stand to try to get my ride where I want it. Now it is perfect! I also put a memory lock on the stand to keep it sliding from side to side as a extra percaution. The mount for the arm is the same as the mount for the tom and the floor tom legs. The memory lock works perfectly, if you decide to go this route I highly recommend doing this. The old ones used to start slipping over time, I think the newer ones are more heavy duty but it's just as a percaution. I am curious what Bernhard thinks? I hope he likes it!

Man, green sparkle is HOT.
I do have one question though, why did you decide to suspend
your rack tom instead of doing the complete Bonham- i.e. mounting it in a snare stand?
Just curious...

Well I'm not your averaged size person, I'm 6' 7". I have tried a snare stand before and I can never get the tom up high enough for me, so I have always liked mounting my tom off of my cymbal stand to get it to the right height. Also I can't get my legs behind a kit with the tom mounted on the bass drum, this allows me to move the bass drum out a little bit so I don't look like the character from the Incredibles driving that little compact car.lol. Also my experience has been that the tom on the snare drum stand is not the most stable way to mount the tom, very top heavy. If you notice on the Zep DVD the only time Bonham did this was with the natural maple kit and the tom was also attached to a Rogers swive-o-matic mount on his bass drum. No chance of it falling over. I think the only reason why he did it is because the tom mount couldn't hold up the large 12" x 14" tom.

You are going to love this kit! Also it is in proportion with us big guys! I never got into the whole small drum craze that has been going on. If I had a kit with a 18" bass drum, 10" tom, and a 14" floor tom I would look like a gorilla behind a kit like that, very uncomfortable!

I am thinking of putting black drum heads on this kit, maybe Remo Ebony Pinstripes, with Ebony Abassadors on the bottom and a black Ludwig Head on the front and batter side. The only drum that would be without a black head would be the snare. I am thinking that the black and green would look pretty cool! What do you think, keep it vintage looking or go with the black heads?

Go with what sounds better.
Check out the Jeff Ocheltree video and he tells you what kind of heads Bonham used on this same kit. If you spent the money on a kit that looks like Bonham's you might as well make it sound just like his!
Personally, I like the white batters.

I am pretty sure that I can get the same sound out of both heads I was thinking the green and black might look pretty cool. I own the Ocheltree DVD also, a lot of great information in that DVD. Right now they are tuned to his recommendations for oversized drums, and they sound great. I will probably just stay with the Emperor heads because that is all I have used for the past 15 years. I really like the sound i get out of them.

Not yet! i'll post 'em when they get here! I was torn between alot of the different colors. The green sparkle was one of them. I wanted the Bonham set, but many seem to get the green sparkle or natural maple. Frankie Banali's site is pretty cool, 'cause he has the most diverse actual drum set colors i could find on the web, and he's a Ludwig nut. I did settle on a wrap finish. This is going to have to last me for a long time, and durability was an issue. I loved some of the lacquer finishes, but when those get damaged, its more costly to repair than a rewrap. But....looking at these pics of the green really make me wish....oh well. I'll be more than happy to show them off when they get here!!

Thanks! For awhile green sparkle was a finish you didn't see to often, but now it seems pretty popular. I have always liked it ever since I was a kid, my high school had all green sparkle bass drums and snare drums back in the 80's when the sparkle finishes were not very popular. They were old Ludwig drums that they got surplus, ever since then I always thought it would look cool on a kit. But for years no one offered this finish, I finally have my dream kit!

You just can't beat good ole Bonham style Luddies! I've played this classic configuration my entire life as a drummer although my set-ups were more inspired by Mitch Mitchell and Carl Palmer (in his early days) than by John Bonham.Recently my wife bought me the classic Ringo Starr kit with two floor toms,so I can feel your joy each time you pick your sticks to play your lovely kit.I like the green finish too.Isn't life grand?

I bought these drums new from Bandland Percussion Center in Clarksburg, W.V. in October 2005. When I found out the Ludwig reissued green sparkle I knew that is what I had to get. So I just ordered the Bonham sizes becuase that is the configuration that I have been playing for about 20 years now. It listed a little over $1800.00 without hardware except for the tom mount. There phone number is (304)622-1171 ask for Larry he gave me a good deal. I also opted for the cymbal arm mounted on the bass drum which was an extra $75.00 well worth it! Good Luck!
P.S. After my trade in I actually paid $848.00

Yes, this kit was not a Bonham reissue kit. Therefore you can get this finish in all the sizes that Ludwig offers. I ordered this kit in these particular sizes because I prefer oversized drums and this configuration.

Thank you for your comments. Yes I am very proud of my kit, I have played out with it about eight times now and other drummers just come up and drool over it. It is kind of a good feeling! I got the tom, bass drum, and floor toms in around 7 1/2 weeks. The snare drum actually took awhile because they were having chrome plating issues. The salesman that I dealt with said that Ludwig was very sorry for the delay and kept him informed fairly well on the progress. It was all well worth the wait! The drums are incredible, I think you will enjoy your kit very much. You should get your snare pretty quick, whatever the issue was with the chrome plating has been taken care of. Definately post pictures when you get them. What finish and sizes did you get?

Thanks for the comments! The two Paiste 2002 crashes you see are 18" med crash and a 20" med crash. The first Paiste's I have ever owned and they won't be the last, I love these cymbals. By far the best sounding crash cymbals I have ever owned. The 20" crash actually has great response for such a large cymbal. You should try them out.

What finish and sizes did you get?
I ordered the wrapped zep set shell pack. I'll just post the pics of the color when it gets here. The only real difference is the zep set kit says it comes with the 12 x 14 instead of the 10 x 14, i think that's what i read you have. That is fine with me, i have no problem putting it on a snare stand. I already have the bass mount cymbal holder, so that'll go on as soon as they get here. Going to have to save up for the 2002's if i decide to go with them. I looked into some of the alpha series, but i haven't found very much information about them. I want some decent cymbals to go with it, and the alphas sound good to me on the paiste site, but i can't seem to find any locally to actually hear them. I was actually looking into the vistalite reissues, but decided against those on because of durability concerns alone. I contacted the dealer i ordered from and they said they were running 12 weeks for these but delivering in 8-10. I was hoping, that just maybe (with fingers crossed) that was a worst case estimate. I'll just have to suffer with the anticipation!
Oh yeah, i meant to ask about the memory lock. Do you happen to know what part# that is? I assume it would also work with the floor toms, 'cause i really hate having to adjust those every single time. I've searched but can't find any info on which ones to get.
pcmckay
05-25-2006, 06:38 AM
Definately go with the Paiste 2002 series, these are the best cymbals I have ever used. When you find a Paiste dealer near you try out a 20" med crash 2002, this cymbal just sounds amazing. It is now my favorite cymbal that I own.
About the memory lock, I could not find a part # for you. But it is the same memory lock used for the floor tom legs, and I'm pretty sure it is the same size for the tom mount. If you go to your local Ludwig dealer they should have all of the parts that you need. But it works very well on the cymbal arm, just an extra precaution to prevent the cymbal stand from sliding from side to side. Good Luck!

What kind of stock heads did the Ludwigs come with?
They came with the Ludwig Coated Heavy on the batter side, and Ludwig Coated Medium on the bottom. On the bass drum it came with Ludwig Smooth White Heavy Power Collar on the batter side, and Ludwig Smooth White Medium Power Collar on the resonant side. The snare drum came with the Ludwig Coated Heavy on the batter side, and a standard Ludwig Snare Head on the bottom. The salesman that I dealt with gave me the option of what heads I wanted, and these were the heads that I chose. Since then I have replaced everything with Remo Coated Emperors, Remo Coated Ambassadors, except for the bass drum I am still using the stock heads.

I wanted to keep my bass drum a virgin, I don't want to drill any holes in it. Also with my size it is much more comfortable to mount the tom off of the cymbal stand. This allows me to move the bass drum out further so that I can get my long legs behind the kit.

That kit is just beautiful, an absolute classic. As far as heads go for a focused sound, you should consider black dots or maybe pinstripes.
I was thinking possibly pinstripes but I wasn't sure. Do you think power strokes would muffle them to much?

Why exactly do you want to change head types for a more focused sound? Aren't you defeating the purpose of having over sized toms tuned properly to take advantage of the big, open, powerful sound they're capable of..like Bonham? I would think that in the studio, properly miked with a knowledgable engineer, those drums could be made to sound great. If I was in that situation, in order to get a more focused sound, I would probably go with smaller drum sizes with maybe coated 2 ply heads to get that sound. Of course, that may not be a option that is available.... ....I was just curious about your reasoning behind the head change.

They`ll certainly cut out a lot of the the overtones and ringing- that`s what they`re supposed to do. But they also take away some of the drums natural resonance. I use pinstripes on my kit at home because of their dampening effect, but if I were playing live or recording, it`d be single plys for sure.

I play in two different bands, the one band is more of a hard rock sound so the Bonzo tuning is perfect for that band. This new artist that I am currently playing for, the wide open tom sound just doesn't sound right with her music. She really likes the boomy bass drum and my snare sound, but the toms or more of a wide open ringy sound like Bonzo's. I tried moon gel on them but it really killed the sound and choked them. I am looking for a drum head that doesn't need muffeling and just focuses the tom sound a little more.
I have always played oversized drums, but I have never played this kind of music before. Listening to her CD's the drums have the really polished Nashville sound, I'm just trying to duplicate that the best I can.

How about some EC2s? Just a thought, a little dampening but they don't muffle like the Pinstripes and still have a pretty big sound. Or perhaps some Aquarians? I really like their Classic Clear and seeing as they're slightly heavier than Emperors they might have the effect you want.

Shallow bass drum but nice finish on the kit.

Don't let the shallow bass drum fool you, this thing BOOOMS! It is the same size that Bonham used, and we all know what kind of bass drum sound Bonzo had!

The whole kit sounds great especially the 26" bass drum. The snare drum for me is the icing on the cake, I absolutely love the Supraphonic. It is a very versatile drum, I play many different styles of music and the snare fits no matter what I am playing. Whether you like Ludwig or not I still think they make the best snare drums on the market.

Did the kit come with that amazing bass drum head? I've seen pictures of the head, and they've been stock black with meh writing.

Yes, the front head came with the kit. In fact the salesman that I dealt with gave me the option of a black or white reso head. I also had the option to get the old script logo like I have or the regular famous logo. I personally like the old script logo.

Wow man, that's a really nice kit! I totally dig the finish, it's gorgeous! I'd put my sticks somewhere else if i were you though...

I did that for the picture because Bonham always had a pair of sticks there on his bass drum. I normally use a stick bag but I thought it would add to the vintage look.

I was just looking through the forums killing time, then I saw your kit. I think I just stared at it for a couple minutes, and couldn't move a muscle. The green sparkle really makes it pop visually. Nice kit man.

Great looking Ludwigs man. Seeing kits like this on this board is what convinced me to get my Classic Maples as well. I'll never be able to use anything other than a big shallow bass drum again.

I agree completely. I love the 14"x26" bass drum it just booms and cuts through everything. Most of the time I don't even need to mike it if I'm playing inside like a club or something. The best kit I have ever owned. In my opinion Ludwig is definately back!

Darn, I missed this thread!
Beautiful....beautiful....(did i mention "beautiful"?) Ludwigs.
Congrats on your green sparkles. I have a classic birch kit
in black sparkle and it's not just my eyes, but in certain light
or rooms, my kit looks like a darker green sparkle.
Enjoy those sweet Ludwigs!

Truly a Classic Look! Prior to ordering my Classic Birch set I studied your kit many times in the Your Drumset section of Drummerworld. It's hard to beat the sound of the Power Collar head on the bass that Ludwig includes with their kits. Earlier in this thread you were looking for a head with a more focused sound for your toms, what did you end up with? Great Lookin Set!!

The Ludwig Classic Maple's are great. I just got my kit a few weeks ago. Alot smaller than yours. It's what I need and I've loved playing them in this short time that I've had 'em.
Next on the list... 6.5x14 Supraphonic with tube lugs.

I still use a coated 2-ply head like the Emperors, instead I'm using the Evans G-2's now. I switched because of the coating issue that Remo has been having. But I actually I'm tuning better and that took care of the desire to get a head with a more focused sound. Before I wasn't getting the sound that I desired until I discovered that I just didn't have enough seperation in tone between the batter side and the resonant side. I have all of the reso heads on my kit tuned very high, so I lowered the batterside more then what I was used to and wow! A huge difference and now my toms just have this powerful boomy sound with no ring or overtones.

I'm having a similar problem with the 14 x 14 and 16 x 16 floor toms. Assuming you use a Drum Dial, what are the settings batter/resonant? What type of resonant head are using on your floor toms? Thanks.

All of my reso heads are Coated Remo Ambassadors, except on the bass drum. The resonant heads are tuned at 85 on a drum dial, batter side heads are around 78. Keep in mind that my floor toms are 16"x16" and 16"x18", and my tom is 10"x14"

Thanks for the information. I'm currently at 80 on the resonant side, and 75 on the batter. I'm going to try your settings on my floor toms. I'm building quite an inventory of heads in my attempts to get the right sound. I have ordered Coated Ludwig Heavy (batter) and Coated Ludwig Medium (resonant) heads. Another forum member had told me that Ludwig Heads sound best on Ludwig Drums. I have Coated Pinstripes and Emperor's for batter application if the Coated Ludwig Heavy is too light. I'm currently using Clear Ludwig Heavy on both the batter and resonant side. Well, this is starting to turn into a Head thread. Again, you have a great looking set. Thanks for sharing.

I had the coated Ludwig heads that came with the kit but I wasn't real crazy about them. I really prefer the Coated Remo Emperors that I have used for twenty five years, but lately they have had this coating issue. I'm happy with the Evans G-2's for now. For the bottom I feel that you can't beat the Remo Coated Ambassadors.

I received my Ludwig heads and I like the sound, they're a little more mellow. I used the settings you recommended taking the batter side up to 80 with the resonant side at 85 on the floor toms, the sound is much better. Thanks again.
