Tomas Haake, Gene Hoglan, and Martin Lopez are my top 3. Martin lopez is probably miles away from the other 2 in technique but his creativity, class, and style make him easily one of the best.

ken schalk and danny carey for me, they have the chops and the amazing coordination and tecnicality, and ken schalk brings some nice jazz grooving to the table as well. But yes props are due to folks like Holgan and Reinert

Jukka Nevalainen - Nightwish
Snowy Shaw - Dream Evil
Casey Grillo - Kamelot
Richard Christy (formerly of Iced Earth)
George Kollias - Nile (not very technical, but listen to the guy's feet)
Thomas Stauch (formerly of Blind Guardian)

These guys aren't the absolute best, but then again, who can actually say they're the absolute best?

What? Huh? DId he, did he actually say? Snowy Shaw of Dream Evil? Ok I know everyone's tastes are respectable, but i can't help but viewing Dream Evil as a big joke. I suppose Snowy Shaw has some talent but if you listen to just the drums it'll sound no different than most funny dungeons and dragons bands, well there are a few good ones, like Demons and WIzards and Raphsody.

That's actually the whole point of Dream Evil. They pretty much are making fun of the whole power metal scene.

Theres some good names so far but I cant believe no one has mentioned Igor Cavalera.
Also "metal" could mean alot of things. Scott Travis and Derek Roddy both play metal but you're not gonna get Judas Priest and Hate Eternal on the same bill if you get what I mean. They cant all be compared.
But you can ignore that as long as you know about IGOR.

I would also have to mention Jason Rullo, Gene Holgan, Dirk Verbeuden, David Haley of Psycroptic ( which I have just discovered, truly one of the most impressive Death metal drummers to date ), Chris Alder, and on...and on and on :D

It still amazes me that Brann Dailor from mastadon gets so little press on this site. My favorite metal drummers would be:

Brann Dailor
Thomas Haake
Danny Carey
Igor Cavelera
Vinnie Paul
Also love Chris Kontos' playing on the first Machine Head album and Dave McClain's on the second.
Abe Cunningham (Though not a metal drummer he does play in a metal band of sorts)

Well well an old thread with an old type of question which can of course not really be answered, but here are my favs(in order)

1.Thomas Haake(hardly anyone could ever fathom what meshuggah does)
2.Hannes Grossmann(drummer for Necrophagist, insane creativity and speed, the songs are completely composed, NO hit of a cymbal is coincidence)
3.Martin Lopez(brings the best style I have ever heard)
4.Derek Roddy(techniqually maybe the best and fastest but I dont really like his bands)
5.Richard Christy, sorry dont know how to write it(drummer for "Death" , so much details and amazing cymbal work in his playing)

Mark Castillo - Bury Your Dead
Zach Gibson - The Black Dahlia Murder
Mike Justian - Unearth

Hey dude Ive carfully listened to this Jordan Mancino, and to be frank yeh he is fast but Joey is an overall better drummer, due to his creativity in songs e.g., His lightning fast tom fills and solos. Also he is technically much more precise and his style of playing can change in songs from an insane tom fill to a gut bustin double bass chop, to a funky melodic beat through playing a huge range of different cymbals and drums. In conclusion Joey is one or THE best metal drummer and most infuential to recent generations of drummers.
Also im sure im not the only one but Joey is much exiting and enjoyable to listen to.

well fact is this topic is redundant

but
i can tell you a few (metal) people whose drumming I love, even though I get so little to nothing out of metal (though i have before so i think i have some idea of what i say)

John Dolmayan - perfect> tasteful, powerful and dammit - sit and play his parts on your drums either along to the song or just with it in your head and to me it brings a joy.

Derek Roddy & Hellhammer - a different part of metal spectrum to eg Dolmayan but to me are something of pioneers in the fashion that Dave Lombardo was in the 80s (time will tell). Their speed and enruance but more importantly precision ('tightness'), sound and creativity is wonderful. Very musical yet still intrinsically death/black metal. AND - both the boys can groove. Also both Derek Roddy and Hellhammer on one album each have what is for me the best extreme metal drum sound - for derek roddy, Nile's Black Seeds of Vengeance = wonderful. For Hellhammer, Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. However both players have suffered weaker and lower drum mixes on other recordings. A real shame.

Dave Lombardo - in regards to 'metal', i really think Slayer means something. And Dave Lombardo was one of those pioneers of the speed but as a suppliment to genuine creativity and real musicality. Reliably good, but rarely predictable. And to any drum-playing Slayer fan, you know as well as I do - there are some magical Lombardo moments. Paul Bostaph never quite captured those 'magical' moments with Slayer (though i think that has as much to do with the material itself from his time with the band) but like Lombardo also has a good groove. My preference to Lombardo is also to do with his more refined hand technique - Bostaph is too much a slammer. Cannot be healthy I do not think. Lombardo's double bass technique is for me also questionable - he seems to truly 'run' on his pedals and get a lot of leg power into the strokes. However he is 40 give or take and still doing it as well if not better than ever, on every occasion that i have seen him.

Joey Jordison - not someone i feel the need to praise for his speed (hand or foot) but rather his drawing attention to 'clever' metal drumming and, I find, getting more recognition for drummers in the metal genre (as a former one myself). At the same time he has made lots of young drummers go after speed and double bass too quickly etc but this is not directly his fault. Live i am really not that impressed by him, nor am i by his (newer) technique but on certain recordings - he really does know what he is saying. There's nothing specific i can really refer to as to why i think he is good - but for those who like him like i do, you'll know what i mean. There's a weird, weird groove there.

i wanted to name five players, but...
To those who count Abe Cunningham as a metal drummer - I think he is really something. To those who don't ... oh well. Cunningham has the atmosphere and groove and even clever chops that never obscure anything but sound perfect. Dave Silveria up until Issues was similar but over simplified in my opinion. It may have something to do with the surgery for his wrist injuries - but in watching him he seems to be hitting harder and 'dumber' now than i have ever seen him ... so I am inclined now to say 'whatever' in regards to Dave Silveria. Abe Cunningham leads the way for me in this field.

Thank you! About time somone mentioned the very underated CK. The drumming on that album is fantastic - some of the best I've ever heard on a hard rock album.
And I have listend to, and watched/listened to many clips/songs, and I still don't believe that DM can pull off some precision parts from the BME album.

Apart from him:

Flo Mounier
Derek Roddy
George Kollias... and so on.

I don't see the point listing any more, as they're more my personal favourites that anything.

Umm, how could I forget:

I'm not missing the point of his drumming. Tool is great progressive rock. If you've heard Death before, you'd hear Reinert break down off beats with all 4 limbs, PLUS he can do the fast stuff.

For Hard Rock - Tommy Lee (Motley Crue)
For Heavy Metal - Scott Travis (Priest, but more impressive in Racer X and Fight)

*chuckles to self*

So Slipknot is really underground is it, I think Joey is good, yes, but just not 'the best.' I never said they were the best, just that I like them. Here are my reasons:

Dave Lombardo played with great originality and was one of the pioneers of his genre, he plays with great power and manages to maintain the consistency and speed required for his playing with Slayer. His energy really drives the band and blends with the riffs well.

Richard Christy, from what I have heard, is much along the same ground. When I discuss Christy I am more referring to his later work after Death (not having heard enough Death to judge) but from what I have heard his playing is precise and accurate, again with the raw energy to drive a band.

Barker is real good, IMO. He played for Cradle years ago and has been with Dimmu for quite some time.. I'll tell ya what, he's QUICK. Real quick. And he's got a suprisingly cool groove in his playing, which isn't too common in most of today's metal drummers who think speed is everything..

Butting in on the Jordison thing, I think he's good. But he's not the best. There is no best, its as easy as that. We create in our mind who is best.. but in reality, there are too many genres, too many drummers, to really know who is the best. I'm not too big a fan of Slipknot, but I certainly acknowledge that Jordison is a good drummer. I dig Richard Christy over him any day. I absolutely LOVE his stuff with Death on the Sound of Perseverance. Its really good stuff. Gene Hoglan is another great metal drummer.. Don't know if we can drag him in, but Mike Portnoy never ceases to amaze me either (Prog Metal...? =P).

And as for Latin, how bout eram, eras, erat, eramus, eratis, erant? =P

John's a good drummer for sure, powerful and he seems to have his own unique sound. However much you try and emulate it's difficult to come across with his own sound, a very good drummer with a good knowledge of cross-genre playing. I don't think he used double bass before Mezmerize, but he seems to do it very well. I personally preferred it when he used single, as it was 'his thing' but it works. No complaints, I like him a lot.

good call whoever mentioned blake richardson (between the buried and me, glass casket) that guy is sick as a sick thing. the way he matches a sucession of beats to each riff in glass casket is fantastic, and his style is perfect on btbams alaska.
also: vinny vinh needs respect for the mathmatical tightness of reflux's live show along with the speed and perfectly planned drumming, but somehow keeping an organic feel

Yes, dan foord from sikth is very good, I think the production on their album is dissappointing though. The "Let the transmitting begin..." ep had a much crisper yet rawer and definately more metal sound. For example the first version of "hold my finger " I far prefer. I think they've changed labels now though as they weren't happy with the album, hopefully their next album is good and soon.

I'm shocked. I never realized that was the same guy. yes very tallented indvidual however. I think cradle of filth is less to be desired for. Dimmu Borgir is better by leaps and bounds. Hmm, tough to say best in terms of drumming, but I believe all of these guys totally OWN in their own right. Sure some aren't as fast as others, but they all helped form the sound of their respective band while having extreme skill:

Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden)
Jason Rullo (SymphonyX)
Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy)
Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, LTE)
Richard Christy (Death, Iced Earth)
Vinny Appice (Dio)
Dave Lombardo (Slayer)
Neil Peart (Rush)
Gene Hoglan (SYL, Death)

For example, Flo Mounier may be the "Lombardo gone mad", but for the time they were out, and for the agression Mr. Lombardo crafted in Slayer and their albums, I wouldn't necesarily say Flo's "better" than Lombardo... And NO I'm not just saying Portnoy and Peart because I have to, I love both of those bands and couldn't really imagine them with any other drummers.

IMHO that's one of the easier pieces I've heard out of Danny. There's a lot of notes, but none of it is actually that hard. A lot of it is just broken up accented singles with double bass underneath. I'd pick Lateralus, The Grudge or Triad as much harder songs to play accurately from that particular album.

Seriously, you must hear Morgen Agren on Fredrik Thordendal's "Sol Niger Within". Danny Carey is great, but learning to play his parts is a question of transcribing and practicing. The stuff Morgen is doing on that Thordendal record... well... yes. There's a few bits I can't even get my head around where the pulse is sufficiently to be able to transcribe!

Now this is my kind of thread. It goes without saying there is no "best drummer" of metal or any genre. However that said I do have my personal favorites.

Derek Roddy, One of the most skilled death metal drummers out there. He is very diverse ranging from death metal to funk. He is one of the fastest death metal drummers out there, YES FASTER THAN JOEY JORDISON. Great player, and a very nice person. I'm on his forum. www.derekroddy.com

George Kolias- Current drummer of Nile and Sickening Horror. He is very skilled as well following in the same vein of Derek Roddy. One of the fastest double bass parts used in a musical context is on Nile's lastest work "Annihilation of the Wicked" which is clocked at 256bpm 16th note singles. However it's not just his speed that is amazing he is a great over all drummer. Also a very nice guy.

Richard Christy- A very great drummer as well, not as fast as the above to but very skilled. His playing with Death on "Sound of Perserverance" is absolutily jaw dropping. He also played with Iced Earth, Controlled Denied. One of my major influences and member of my all time favorite band.

Gene Hoglan- He played on Symbolic by Death, a very pivotal point in death metal history. He is fast and technical yet can work the pocket with such ease and skill. His current work with Strapping Young Lad, although not as technical as Death is much more "pocket" orenited.

But I very often find the instrumental music from Arch Enemy very very good. When it comes to drummers, I would say that Joey Jordison is one of the best (in my opinion) and the fastest guys on the planet. Hmmm best metal drummer thats a tough one.

If where talking speed and technique or just personal prefence then I reckon the best metal drummers are top 5:

1. Gene Hogland - check out Death: Symbolic the album, you'll know what I mean!!!
2. Tomas Haake - bloody fast drummer and plays technical odd time signatures
3. Raymond Harrera - plays fast double bass but also has chops to match with his feet!!!
4. Igor Cavalera - awesome single stroke rolls and fills, with a wicked latin groove influence: plays for Sepultura of course
5. Peter Wildoer - unique style, fast technical etc etc: plays for Darkane.

Also, if hes not actually bull shitting, the drummer from Necrophagist Hannes Grossmann, listen to Epitaph and you'll know what I'm talking about, INSANE drums of that album, took 8 months aparently to record though ha ha ha ha

mmm best metal drummer, rather than do a list if i had to pick one, technically, i would have to pick Gene Hoglan, the guy has a good history stretching back 20 years, he is just as accomplished at doing fast (Darkness Decends anyone, the guy was like 17-18 when this came out truely one of the BEST metal albums of all time) his double bass grooves on the albums he did with Death are again outstanding, and if anyone can point to a better use of the sticks than on these Death albums i would love to here them, he is fantastic live, a machine that seems to not tire. I cant think of metal album whose technicaliy would be beyond Gene if he were to play for them........but how many drummers could come up with Genes parts let alone execute them.........so has far as metal drumming goes....he is the one.

And he plays in odd time signatures like he's gonna win something for it (which he has). He doesn't have the fastest feet ever, but he's not exactly lacking in that region either, not to mention fast feet doesn't necessarily make you good.

I've also seen Chris Adler alot in here who on Lamb of God's cds plays like the Lamb of God. But I bought the Modern Drummer 2005 festival DVD (which he's on) and his technique, and execution live isn't quite what it is in the studio. Still his creativity is far above par. Not to mention he has the best outlook on playing his instument I've ever seen. He hasn't even been playing that long either. He started when he was in college. So he's on my list too.

The drummer from Rhapsody though (i don't know his name) has probably the fastest feet I've ever seen (outside of the fastest feet competition). So he's also on there.

The drummer from Blind Guardian also is on my list for feet. He's not just quick, but he has stamina like nothing. There's songs where he goes almost nonstop for the whole song, and their songs are averagely 6-8 minutes.

The Reverend (from A7X) is also big with me. He's probably my favorite next to Portnoy. The way he works his playing into the music is fantastic and I'm almost in love with his fills. He is definitely the drummer that has had the greatest impact on my playing. (next to Dave Weckl)

I've got some more id write about but I've gotta get going.

Hello everybody !!!

I'm searching for a pdf music score of candiria, that I've found a few days ago on a drummerworld discussion forum. And I think it was on this discussion.
Is there anybody who can help me to find it ?

Thanx a lot.

And I read a little bit of the discussion and I don't see the name of Kevin Talley !!!
However, he is a geat metal drummer. He was playing with Dying fetus, Misery Index, Chimaira and The Red Chord... He has got a good groove, and it's not usual for extrem metal drummer.

Gene Hoglan. An original Truly ambidextrous. A scary machine to see live.

How can a fat guy move like that?

I always wonder about him and Nicck Barker.....fat guys seem like they would play slow, and yet they are the complete opposite.

mmm best metal drummer, rather than do a list if i had to pick one, technically, i would have to pick Gene Hoglan, the guy has a good history stretching back 20 years, he is just as accomplished at doing fast (Darkness Decends anyone, the guy was like 17-18 when this came out truely one of the BEST metal albums of all time) his double bass grooves on the albums he did with Death are again outstanding, and if anyone can point to a better use of the sticks than on these Death albums i would love to here them, he is fantastic live, a machine that seems to not tire. I cant think of metal album whose technicaliy would be beyond Gene if he were to play for them........but how many drummers could come up with Genes parts let alone execute them.........so has far as metal drumming goes....he is the one.
You are correct, sir. Gene Hoglan is the best drummer a lot of people on this website haven't heard!

Led Zeppelin was a British rock band that became one of the most popular and influential musical ensembles of all time.

The four-member group debuted in 1968 with a raucous and revolutionary take on British blues-rock, and later developed their music in other ways that would contribute to the birth of hard rock and eventually to the rise of heavy metal.-Wikipedia.org

i hope you guys know who I'm about to say, but I'm saying it more in a classic rock point of view, but I'd say best Metal Drummer... atleast back then-- John Bonham.

Unfortunately for us, a lot of metal drummers learn to just do double bassing and do blast beats and such, so they develop really crappy technique. It's reasons like that that make guys like Lars Ulrich the worst drummers in the mainstream. Okay, he can play double kick and play fast. Wow. He can't do half the things Thomas Lange can do. Unfortunately, as much as I love Dave Silveria, Matt McDonough, Joey Jordison, Dave Lombardo, John Dolmayan, and Mike Portnoy, they don't have great technical technique which keeps them out of the 'best' catagory. They're good, but that's it.

There's great, progressive, technical drummers like Terry Bozzio, Gregg Bisonette, Virgil Donati, Thomas Lange, etc. etc. that developed their technique and could play metal if they chose. So, if you're going on technical stuff, with musical knowledge I gotta give it up to guys like:

Jason Bittner - Shadows Fall
Paul Bostaph - Slayer, Ministry
Ray Herrera - Fear Factory
Virgil Donati - Steve Vai, Planet X
Danny Carey - Tool
Martin Lopez - Opeth

That's my list. Feel free to yell at me because I don't know what the f--- I'm talking about, even though I'm studying percussion and music, and I watch musical dvds every day on my job and see true technique.

Well there are so many good ones here is a list of the ones i like... Jaska Ratikaanen of Children of Bodom, the drummer from DEATH, Scott Travis of Judas Priest, and Mike Terrana... But i'd have to say that Jaska is still my favorite METAL drummer of all time just because of the fact that BODOM KICKS ASS!!! and he is fast... I like fast...

TheAnalogKid
04-21-2006, 09:58 PM
If you really like fast, and you really like HEAVY, you should check out Virgil Donati. Watch him with Vai, if you don't dig the big progressive stuff. I love him with Planet X. If you're a big fan of death metal, he can do the blast-beats, and the fast feet.

One of the best things he does, is the 2-hat shuffle, using his left foot to ride, and his right hand to accent. It's really phenomenal to watch someone that powerful, but still able to create a tight pocket.

If you like really artsy, progressive drumming, check out Thomas Lange, Terry Bozzio, Chad Wackerman, etc.

DW has released a couple of 'drum-duets' with Bozzio and Wackerman, and it's really fun to watch 2 phenomenal drummers duet with monster kits.

For "musicality" I like Danny Carey and Brann Dailor.

For technicality I like Chris Pennie, Tomas Haake* and the drummer from Ion Dissonance.

I don't really listen to any death metal, but the only drummer I like who uses many blast beats is Blake Richardson (BTBAM) the crazy nature of their music keeps it interesting.

My current favorite metal drummer is Vinny Vinh (Reflux (http://www.uvtv.info/reflux.php)) I think his playing shows an amazing combination of both musicality and technical skill. Check him out.

* Initially I didn't think I liked Haake's drumming, however I later realised that the Meshuggah CD I had impulse-bought was Catch-33 and had programmed drums. Having now listened to other Meshuggah albums, I think he's a genius.

I think that it depends on what kind of things that the metal drummer is good at. I evaluate him or she, by speed, technique and creativity.
Therefor here´s my folowing favourite metal drummer list: :P

Derek Roddy
Morgan Agren (this guy is completely cool, how he can mix jazz stuff with metal in odd time signatures)

Virgil Donati (he´s more rock than metal but very progressive)

Mike Portnoy
Chris Adler

Riggghhhhhhhhhhhhhht. Which Iced Earth drummer?

There have been about 10, but I think you're referring to Richard Christy. Either way, I'm inclined to disagree. And speed isn't everything.

I beg to differ when it comes to Richard, I WOULD say he's got better chops than those three, Death's 'Sound Of P..' and Control Denied's first alb and also his work with Iced Earth is brilliant, and he ain't ALL about speed, his fills and beats are very interesting and talented.

I would also have to mention Jason Rullo, Gene Holgan, Dirk Verbeuden, David Haley of Psycroptic ( which I have just discovered, truly one of the most impressive Death metal drummers to date ), Chris Alder, and on...and on and on :D

Personally i think tool sucks their music is so boring to me they never play hard, the only songs i like are sober and stinkfist although their drummer is pretty good, i heard a drum solo he played, i think he should quit tool and join a better band

Dude you are insane. Bostaph is a good drummer but doesn't even come close to the feel and groove of Lombardo. Lombardo is slayer. They were not even close to the same band without him.

i like the tool drummer but wouldnt go as far as to classify what he does as metal either. his talents dont need the title of being a metal drummer. as for mike portnoy, im not a dream theatre fan and ive only heard a few songs of thier but i think they deffinately do metal, the guy does way to many quads tho and i dont like his style.

as for the lombardo vs bostaph argument, why is anyone even going there.?

lombardo carried slayer from 81,82 till what? early 90s somewhere about. then bostaph sits in when slayer totally cannibalizes thier previous albums for, what seems, an indefinate amount of time for the 90s<i dont even know whos taking the reigns now>

its hard to gauge whos better, this also veers into master vs student, lombardo is the most influencial thrash drummer ever, been there since it began. bostaph is in a no-win situation

Well... I don't know if I can say who the best metal drummer is... maybe no one can... but in my opinion the BEST METAL DRUMMING is that of Tool... at least in the last 20 years...

This playing is so imaginative, challenging, fluid and beautiful... every part well tought out, perfectly excecuted... a drum sound with no selfishness to it... a sound perfectly meshed with the texture of the music... Danny Carey's drumming in Tool raised the ante in my opinion... both conceptually and technically about what metal drumming can be.

Since when did Tool start in 1986?

And secondly your knowledge of metal over the last 20 years couldn't be that broad if you think Tool has the BEST metal drumming, don't get me wrong though, he's a great drummer but the best in the last 20 years, I think not!

that's why in said, In my opinion.

I first heard of Tool in around 1994 or 95, not more... and after that I have not heard metal drumming I'd consider more brilliant or original...

More challenging, perhaps... faster, definitely... a more impressive sound... maybe too... but all those together to produce that effect again, I haven't.

Since when was Lamb of God not metal? They're most certainly not nu-metal.

I sense the same divisions here as I see in the jazz World. Everybody getting picky as to what defines a genre.

Last 20 years? For sheer imagination, as has been said, Tool. Yes, Flo Mounier may be faster, yes Dave Lombardo may have a more powerful sound, yes George Kollias may be more extreme and yes Gene Hoglan may have some simply stunning independence, but for sheer imagination and creativity, it has to be Tool. Look at the tom grooves, look at the fat backbeats, look at the sheer imagination used to create those parts.

Danny Carey went against the grain of 'faster, more extreme' and stuck with his own thing, to great effect as well. I can see that and I wouldn't even particularly call myself a Tool fan, I just think from my perspective he plays the best 'music' compared to the other guys who all play similar parts at varying speeds and intensities. There are of course, exceptions and those are exceptionally good at those similar parts (look at the list above and decide for yourself, or any drummer you know and like) but Danny Carey has a very individualistic approach. It's hard to define Tool as such, but to not call them metal demonstrates a very narrow perspective.

I'd put them in the same class as Slipknot, need I say more. Chris alder is overrated too, considering a lot of his fast double kicks were recorded at half the speed as they sound on the album.

I think there are a lot of differences between Lamb of God and Slipknot. For one, Lamb of God do not rely on an image to sell albums, some gimmick. There is no gimmick that I can see. Slipknot use a 'DJ' (using the term loosely here) and various 'Percussionists' (again). If Adler records at half the speed, then surely you'd notice a discrepancy in the sound, speeding up a recording to twice what it was recorded to produce the part at does strange things the sound. Either way, even if he does record at half the speed (which I seriously doubt) he can still consistently play the songs live. So I see no point/need for him to have to play it half speed or indeed I see no problem if he does.

Overrated? That's your choice I suppose. A lot of the time I just think the whole 'metal' genre as it has become is overrated but that's a personal choice.

Some of my favourites are:

Vinnie Paul - Pantera
Lars Ulrich - Metallica
Dave Lombardo - Slayer
Jason Bittner - Shadows fall (Don't really like the band but he's an awesome drummer)

Yes, John Bonham was an absolute legend!!! And was one of the main contributors to Hard Rock/Heavy Metal but not so much as Rainbow's Cozy Powell & Deep Purple's Ian Paice. These were two of the first drummers to introduce a new technique called "double bass drumming" to some of their songs and thus Heavy Metal truely began it's foundations not to mention being some of the biggest inspirations to bands like Slayer & Metallica etc..

On that note I'm glad so many people have mentioned the mighty Dave Lombardo but sad to see not enough mention of the seemingly underrated Paul Bostaph who was up to the task of taking over for Mr. Lombardo and kicked ass doing it eg. Divine Intervention etc........ I'm honestly happy to say I love Lombardo & Bostaph almost on par but Lombardo's awesome work with Fantomas & Testament tip the scales towards Lombardo.

Of course Martin Lopez (Opeth) is an absolute legend and the very cool Igor Cavalera is not to be missed!

Don't ya love it!

You clearly haven't seen Lamb of God live - if the kick beats are recorded at half the speed as they're played on the album how does he perform them live? I saw it and heard it with my own eyes/ ears and he most definitely plays the songs exactly the same live as on the record.

They were stunning live, got the crowd going better than most bands I've seen. DevilDriver who supported, similarly, got the crowd going brilliantly, and I don't even like DevilDriver.

To say Lamb of God aren't metal is ridiculous, rock bands don't sound the same now as Sabbath did back in the day for the simple reason that rock has evolved. Metal, too, has evolved (which is why I guess that stupid banner of New Wave of American Heavy Metal came about). Much like any other genre of music, pop, jazz... you name it - stop getting so anal about what "proper" metal is, to be honest it just makes you come off as narrow minded, and I'm sure you're not, I'm sure you're just voicing your opinion, but to write Lamb of God off as not metal... hmmm... personally I don't like As I Lay Dying all that much but I wouldn't consider them "not" metal.

My personal metal favourites are Danny Carey and Chris Adler, along with a host of others, Chris Pennie being the main one that comes to mind.

Pete Sandoval has amazing skills at double bass, Chris adler is definately up there, vinnie paul (just because he could do some cool fills) and definately Daney Carey, if you consider TOOL metal

Chris Pennie of The Dillinger Escape Plan because he incoporates so many different styles of music into his playing and does them all extremely well. Plus, he somehow fits those styles, such as jazz and latin, into all of the odd time signatures and swift time changes that DEP uses and manages to keep the musicality present as well.

I'll throw in Thomas Haake and Nick Barker as well

I wasn't the one who said they are not 'metal' get your facts straight.
And his kicks at half speed wasn't meant to be taken literally, I mean recorded not as fast as they actually are produced on the CD, maybe he got better b4 they played the album live I dunno but thats what i've been told, honesty i don't care.
