Thankyou!! finally some METAL, not mall-rat metalcore/emo/mathcore/hardcore blurrrch!

So that wasn't something you posted? If you refer back to the post by Dimm_slayer that you quoted, he quotes a previous post by Kicks_Mc_Gee which lists bands such as Lamb of God, Unearth, The Black Dahlia Murder (how you can't call them metal is completely beyond me?!)...

So, I need to get my facts straight?!

and to believe that Chris Adler recorded his kick beats slower and then "got better" so he could play live... that's just pure naive man, why on earth would any musician record their part slower, have it sped up on record and then have to get better for a live performance? What would he have done had he not been able to improve enough?

In MY OPINION, I would call them metalcore, what would you call them? And the speed of his kicks thing, I was just mentioning that I had heard or read it somewhere, I never said I think it is true or that it was a fact? IMHO if he DID record them and speed it up for the CD, and then couldn't play it live without getting better at his game, I think it would either be an incentive to practice more or utterly stupid.

Definitely Ted Kirkpatrick of Tourniquet. Incredibly talented musician and song-writer. Not just fast, but truly versatile.

Clive Burr, original Iron Maiden drummer. Played metal with a jazz feel.

Kim Ruzz, original Mercyful Fate drummer. Precise, complex, the apex of prog metal drumming.

face it people it s acomes down to these five drummers
1.john bonham-bein top metal drummer even though he was rock'n'roll
2.lars ulrich-for pretty much reinventing heavy metal drums to make it what it is today
3.marco pitruzzella- just for bein so godly
4.chris adler-cuz he reinvented metal drums once again and refined them to perfection
5.and of course we cant forget aobut neil pert- he just does things that are purely insane and wouldnt of been thought of until he did it

the worst are of course
1.acdc
2.the majority of punk
3.the majority of hardcore/emo/pop punk/post hardcore drummers none of them are truly gifted drummers they proably was the only thing around that could remotely play the drums

and the thing about chris adler is no way in hell true i seen him do it on video documentary and i seen him do it live -chris adler is amazing-

I would have to say Chris Adler(Lamb Of God), Jason Bittner(Shadows Fall) and Brann Dailor(Mastodon) for today's metal drummers. The old school nods goe to Dave Lombardo(Slayer), Lars Ulrich(Metallica), Vinnie Paul(Pantera).

I would have to say Dave Lombardo. I do enjoy Chris Adler's and Martin Lopez's drumming a lot as well. It's too bad Martin Lopez had to leave Opeth.
Danny Carey is amazing also, but I don't know if I would classify Tool as metal.

Hi all!

I can't speak in terms of "the best" that is too subjective for my tastes, but I think my favorite drummer in the metal section would have to be Aquiles Priester from Angra.

Aquiles has the precision, the speed, and some very interesting patterns - his way of incorportating brazilian rythms in Angra's music is fabulous. In my opinion, he really has his own voice. I can't nail this exactly, but athough he has a very machine-like way of playing, I feel he has a certain sens of groove. Obviously not like a funk drummer, but he's got something movy in his playing.

Here are a few vids for you guys to check him out if you're not familiar with his playing:

- Acid Rain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fH6WXq8gJKk)
- Nova Era (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDcdVfcPDaI)
- Judgement Day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGq0CmjvBLE)
- Unholy Wars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39-DSg5pvTA)
- Hunters And Prey (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4J5rM--cws)

Enjoy!

Regards,
Christopher.

I'm going to have to say
Vinnie paul and Chris adler have been my fav's for some time now.
I'm just a sucker for the sweet footwork. I got to meet adler this weekend in Atlantic city and he is a super nice guy. A good friend of mine MikeyB is his drum tech so i got to hang out with Mike for like an hour while he set up the kit. He asked me if i wanted to play them when he was done with sound check but i wussed out!!! HA HA .
I think this is my first post since i signed up on the site...so HI EVERYBODY!!

There is no best metal drummer. There are only favourite drummers.

Mine are:
Gene Hoglan - Strapping Young Lad and a few Death albums
Dave Lombardo - Slayer
Matt McDonough - Mudvayne (very tastefull drumming)
Raymond Herrera - Fear Factory

Well Mike Portnoy is my personal favourite, its not coz he can play pretty much EVERYTHING but he changes pattern so so many times when he is playing and they are mad complicated also and il be dammed how he remembers it all also..

As for propper metal/death drummers its a very close call between DOC (R.I.P) Formally from Vader..Darey..their current drummer (bass drum speed would insult anyone..ALMOST) Dave Lombardo Former Slayer, Raymond Harerra from Fear Factory and Pete the Feet from Morbid Angel

In the new portnoy video he says he remember parts by writing them ALL down. then he writes down what the part reminds him of...say, meshugga or some other song or band. He said he would never remeber that stuff otherwise.

Yes, John Bonham was an absolute legend!!! And was one of the main contributors to Hard Rock/Heavy Metal but not so much as Rainbow's Cozy Powell & Deep Purple's Ian Paice. These were two of the first drummers to introduce a new technique called "double bass drumming" to some of their songs and thus Heavy Metal truely began it's foundations not to mention being some of the biggest inspirations to bands like Slayer & Metallica etc..

On that note I'm glad so many people have mentioned the mighty Dave Lombardo but sad to see not enough mention of the seemingly underrated Paul Bostaph who was up to the task of taking over for Mr. Lombardo and kicked ass doing it eg. Divine Intervention etc........ I'm honestly happy to say I love Lombardo & Bostaph almost on par but Lombardo's awesome work with Fantomas & Testament tip the scales towards Lombardo.

Of course Martin Lopez (Opeth) is an absolute legend and the very cool Igor Cavalera is not to be missed!

Don't ya love it!

Man! This is hard to do without the songs influencing you!

I totally agree that Bostaph was underrated in Slayer! He brought different skills to the table as well as out and out drumming skills. See how Slayer's songs were arranged better during his time with them? I think both Bostaph and Lombardo are equal in the grand scheme of things. It's nostalgia that puts Lombardo ahead with most people IMO...

Igor's been forgotten about since the end of Seputura. Another class drummer!!!

I think at the end of the day though I'd still put Lombardo and Bostaph at the top of the metal drummer tree.

I just think that Mudvayne's drummer is unique, with some sweet beats. He doesnt play the common stuff, it's just powerful and not predictable (atleast for me). He's one drummer that I love everything about his playing (not that he's the only). That and I basically think Mudvayne is amazing all around, their vocalist is perfect live, the bassist is sweet, and the guitarist isn't bad.

Well, at age 43 I must admit that I'm a bit old to join this poll... But have you younger drummers out there ever heard Rob Reiner from Anvil? He's one of the early metal-drummers, and especially on the album "Metal On Metal" there're some serious great metal drumming: listen to the tunes: "tease med, please me", "mothra", "march of the crebs", "jackhammer", "666", and tell me if that is some serious drumming or what? The album before that (their first) was not as interesting, and the album after was not as good either. What happend from then on, I don't no. But listen to "Metal On Metal"... That is some serious "ancient" heavy metal drumming!!!

I really like the drummers in Darkane and Gojira. They are both fast as necessary, its the musicial choices they make that get me.
Also just for the record I personally think that the older players like Vinnie Paul and John Tempesta have a much better effect on their bands than newer guys however fast or technical they may be. Also these guys can play double bass with a kind of perfection I've not heard Roddy or Mournier etc attain.

One of my favourite is Muhammed Suicmez, he's the lead guitarist in Necrophagist. He programmed the Onset Of Putrefaction drums and he wrote about 90% of the Epitaph drums.
His creativity is really incredible because the stuff he writes is playable on drums, if he could play drums he would play his parts.

To me fast is not best but for death metal it seem so since the only fun of it is to trash so being fast gives more trash, lol. Anyway Flo Mounier is from Quebec and I'm too. Last year he was at an expo for the jazz fest in Montreal. And he came to try the new roland electro drum demo. He played fast double pedal non stop as he's good at. But anybody can play like that. You could be totally on durgs and drunk and play like that. You just have to practise and you got for it. It,s easy to get fast. But to play well with a band, being technic and have the perfect matching play is another thing and that to me is mature drummer. But we still need those speed freaks to play in those over technical detroy band. And those guys are good and tight very impressive. But personnaly I would just watch a clip, being impressed and walk away and go listen to Define The great Line over and over and forget about how fast flo mounier play because men that Aaron Gillespie knows how to play well and fit a good feal to his music with Underoath. At that same exp of roland I just sat on the bench after Flo kinda roll like he did with a single pedal instead of the double, of course I couldn't go fast as long and non stop as him, he's pro and he's the fastest, but you know people around didn't quite see a difference. There are solo drummers and and there's musician drummer. I would rather chose Aaron as best musician and drummer to me personnaly than Flo mounier who's the fastest, that's all.

Definitley Martin Lopez from Opeth. What a leg-end! Such a unique style for a metal drummer, insanely fast and tight double pedalling etc. but such a great feel too, sort of latin jazz influences in his playing. So relaxed, just awesome.
Its a shame he had to leave Opeth, i dont think they'll ever be able to find anyone so versatile.

Id seriously check out some stuff if you haven't heard it. If you wanna hear some of his full on metal playing listen to a song like 'Deliverence', for his more laid back playing theres loads of great tunes from the Damnation album which is all pretty soft stuff, 'In my time of need' is a great example.

Anyway, rant over, what does everyone else think?

Does Danny Carey count? If he doesn't I'd have to go with Lars.

Two ''stock'' choices, I know, I just like the parts they come up with.

Sean reinert or Bobby jarzombek, both are very fast and extremely technical, they also blend a multitude of styles and genre's seamlessly and there creativity never ceases to amaze me. They piss all over the majoirty of metal drummers out there IMHO!

I like Mike Portnoy and Mark Zonder but that's just the love of prog showing, I think...
I saw Dave Lombardo at a club in the early nineties and he's amazing. I don't know many other drummers. OK, Chris Alder, he was great to see live, too. Any other suggestions? (not too many please!)

Danny Carey is in my opinion the guy who's done the most impressive and original drumming in the whole genre... I am no metal expert... although in the late 80's early 90's I was very into it...

Carey's drumming is technically flawless, challenging, with a very unique sound and concept that fits the music so well... he's a HUGE part of TOOL's sound... all that rocking hard... totally outside clichés... to do that in ANY style is an amazing achievement.. if I were a kid growing up today I'd be a total Danny Carey Groupie... ha, ha, ha.

Derek Roddy is definitely up there, quite probably Andols Herrick too. Impossibility of reason was really something else. And I'll probably get flogged for saying this but Mr Joey Jordison is really great. I'm not saying he's the best, fastest or anything like that but I really do like his feel and power. Great drummer IMO.

I'd have to say Andols gets it though.

Sean Reinert, Bobby Jarzombek, Derek Roddy have been mentioned but I have to second them. Bobby has got a great personality, no ego, and I respect him for that.

It's pretty difficult to pick a favourite, it depends a lot on what I'm listening to at the moment.

metal can cover so many drummers, strictly metal I really like Chris Adler and Joey Jordison, but...

Since metal can cover many more sub categories and older bands I would say Portnoy and Ulrich top them all.

Portnoy just because hes amazing and just happens to me under the progressive metal genre

And Lars Ulrich not because hes the most skilled or talented drummer, but becuase he has the attitude and style that helped metallica sell those albums, hes not a dull drummer, he just goes out there and has fun and gets into the music. That makes a great drummer more then quick feet and insane fills.

So I'm listening to Suffocation's debut album Effigy of the Forgotten, and I forgot how friggin' SOLID Mike Smith is on it. Nothing too fancy, just solid as a rock. And probably the best blast beats I've heard. Not nearly the fastest, mind you, just the best.

Andy Galeon
This kid was 13 years old ehen he recorded Death Angels Ultra Violence Album

Personally my criteria is the drummers style and not necessarily how fast and tight he can play, but that's important too. Seems today everyone is into the blastbeat thing and
I don't want to see the drummers get over saturated with one style.

Yes I love Fear Factory and bands of that caliber today.
I give them props for helping to introduce the next level of playing.

Henry Wilson, no question he's my favorite. His work in the Florida Sludge bands Cavity and Floor is amazing. It's sludge, so it isn't fast, and it isn't complex (he plays a 4 piece kit, single bass, but his snare beats and crashes are perfectly placed and created unique pacing that really set these bands apart from most in the genre.

Also I can't believe I haven't seen JASON RULLO from Symphony X on this list! That guy has amazing chops, and works perfect stylistically and actually very musically with the crazy odd times that band plays.

my god. what is wrong with todays people? only one person has said blake richardson. i'm going to go out on a limb and assume that whoever doesn't have him on their lists has never heard of between the buried and me. go listen to "colors", and then try not have him on your top metal drummer lists. mine would be:

Blake Richardson - Between the Buried and Me ("white walls", "ants of the sky" and "prequel to the sequel" off of "colors" really get to me. especially the cowbell part around 4:30ish in "ants of the sky" :D)

Dirk Verbeuren - Soilwork/Sybreed (his sort-of-drum-solo is amazing near the end of "revive my wounds" from sybreed's "antares" album)

Nick Barker - Old Man's Child ("sacrifice of vengeance" from "in defiance of existence", no other words need to be said)

Marco Pitruzzella - Brain Drill (listen to "the parasites" on their myspace, his blast beats are ridiculous)

Tomas Haake - Meshuggah (very repetitive, but very good nonetheless)

and that would be, in my opinion, the best 5 metal drummers.

razzmonid

This was chosen due to not only their speed but also on the
way the accompany the melodies of the songs they play in:

1 Dave Lombardo - Slayer, Testament Grip Inc...
2 Shannon Larkin - Wrathchild America, Ugly Kid Joe, Godsmack
3 Igor Cavalera - Sepultura, Cavalera Conspiracy
4 Mike Portnoy - DreamTheater
5 Nick Menza - Megadeth
6 Jürgen 'Ventor' Reil - Kreator
7 Paul Bostaph - Testament, Slayer...
8 Jason Rullo - Symphony X
9 Alex Holzwarth - Rhapsody
10 Charlie Benante - Anthrax

There are so many good drummers to choose from Vinnie Paul, Chris Adler, Lars Ulrich,
John Temptesta and Tom Hunting! but those 10 are the top of their field!

Lars Ulrich!

Why?

Let me tell you kids...

Maybe you missed "written by Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield" next to almost every Metallica song.

In a future.. do you really think that anyone will remember (or listen) to any of the pointless machine gun alike double bass pounding made by your so called "cool drummers"... and their so called "songs"
The answer is NO!.. thing that will remain are musical masterpieces like Metallica albums.. and Lars Ulrich's drumming style that gave those songs the pulse.

Why do you kids think that something played really fast with double kick is sooo coool and Heavy?.. Does that mean that one of the heaviest metal songs ever "For whom the bell tolls" or "Sad but true" are crap by default?

What makes a great musician is songmaking and playing capabilities, NOT a circus acts "1000 bpm" double bass speed freaks, rotating pentagram seats, makeup, and all the other fast playing crap...

Who gives a crap about blast beats and "super ultra mega giga fast playing double bass"?? Who likes that anyway.. except adolescents (aka drummers) pissed off because of a big zit on their face, or because they cant fu*k prettiest girl in school. Ulrich could play that crap too.. but I believe that he never found a place in a song for that so called "beat".
Understand that music is not a speed competition!! You are not great drummer (or musician) if you play 600 bpm!! Try to listen more to a song and not just how fast is someone drumming. Does that mean, that some songs and albums are "kick ass" just because drummer is using a double bass alot.. disregarding the fact that those same songs in a whole sound like a sh*t?

Anyway, what makes Ulrich way better from all the other metal drummers are those great songs he wrote over the years, and the way he played them.. Noone so far could play his songs better than himself.. many have tried and failed. I dont believe that anyone on this thread thinks that, for example, Lang, Lombardo or Jordison could think of better way to play "Hit the lights", "Battery", "Dyers eve", "Frayed ends of sanity", etc..

To me.. compared to Ulrich many other drummers look like a drum sample modules, just rhythm machines, playing crappy songs really fast. Enough said.

(P.S. For all the Lars haters: this post is not about L.Ulrich, his acts, statements nor his personality, just about great musician, song author and drummer)

Lars Ulrich!

Ulrich could play that crap too.. but I believe that he never found a place in a song for that so called "beat".

All musicality aside, no he couldn't. Not that he's incapable of learning to necessarily, just like any other human being, but with his current technical facility he'd fall apart in a second trying to play speed-metal type stuff....nothing against his supposedly genious level of creativity, depth of emotional expression, and abundance of insight into the complex and subtle nature of music.

I don't listen to a ton of metal, but I love Danny Carey, he kills me every time, just because of how expressive he is on those drums, not because of the metal. I swear I can almost hear sentences/talking/emotions in his phrases. Also, Derek Roddy's been impressing the hell out of me since I've been hanging out here, and the other guys people on here talk about that I've looked up since(kollias, hoglan, haake)

Welcome to the forum...are you ok? Do you want someone to talk to about this?

Thank you for your sarcastic "welcome".. and No I don't need someone to talk about that. Im not trying to convince someone that Ulrich is the best drummer or anything like that.. just trying to explain to this young "drummers" on this forum that blast beats and playing double bass on 600 bpm DOESN'T make you a cool and great drummer. Its ok to be able to play super fast but whats a point? I can't recall even one good song played that fast.
And I was kinda pissed off because everyone keeps leaving Ulrich out of their lists. It feels like his name is kinda taboo in here, shameful even to mention.
I admit that I dont like Ulrich's behavior too.. he acts like a spoiled brat, but please understand that he wrote and PLAYED some of the greatest metal stuff ever, so I think that he definitely deserves place next to all those drummers on your "speed kick competition" lists.
Its easy to learn double kick, But to make song like "One" and use double kick wisely to enhance and highlight one segment of that song.. well that makes a real artist and drummer!

I've seen many crazy drummers.. even one that juggles his drumsticks through the air and plays the beat with them at the same time, (way more impresive than playing double kick fast). That guy is a great percussionist and drumming performer.. but drumming is more related to MUSIC than to exibitionism. Try to comprehend that pls.

er1c,

You're actually making some good points, but just be aware that you sound like a total jerk-off. I hope this is not your intent.

I would add Charlie Benante of Anthrax to the category of drummers who write a good deal of their band's music.

I made a similar point in another thread about drumming history, but what young people, drummers included care about is The NOW. And it's youngsters disregard for the past that makes them MORE progressive than old-timers. Metallica is a perfect example of this.

The young who don't respect the old should be taught, but the old who don't respect the young, sit on your ass and watch yourself get passed.

It's not my intention to sound like jerk at all. Just trying to explain that to me Quality of music and song is way more important than Quantity of bass kicks.

Miles u've made some good points in your post.. I couldn't agree more.
But could you or anyone else just explain to me.. where do you see MORE progressiveness??

I've spent years in searching for something new and more (or at least same) progressive as metal music was back in 80's and 90's. It seems like all creativity and inspiration left planet Earth back in the year 2000. (those who like Trivium, Bullet for my valentine or similar "bands" might not agree with this)
And drummers just play faster and keep on putting more and more bpm's and triplets in songs, trying to make sh*t look pretty.

last time I was like "WOW" was after I've heard "No leaf clover" and S&M, almost 10 years ago.

Pls tell me who made that progress in Metal in the last 10 years, and which drummer contributed to it by his musical creativity? I've never heard the big news.

All musicality aside, no he couldn't. Not that he's incapable of learning to necessarily, just like any other human being, but with his current technical facility he'd fall apart in a second trying to play speed-metal type stuff

..and that is what is gonna happen to him and Metallica if they continue to "reinvent" Master of puppets and play like they are 30 yrs younger.

please understand that the problem with that statement is everyone has a different opinion on what the best is.

you are right, Im just trying to say whats best for me.. and, I believe, for zilion other metal fans and players, and whats not.

To me two of the most original drummers to the genre are Matt Greiner of August Burns Red (youtube him, he's great), and this kid named Alex from a much smaller band called Drop The Gun http://www.myspace.com/dropthegunrocks
Check both out seriously.

just have to cue in a little something on this. as far as progression goes, It's always been the same, and it will always be the same. There are great players in every genre of music, and there are not so great players, progressions are discovered through real listening , not understanding something that is progressive is different from there not being any progressions. There will always be cutting edge players out there, you just have to be really listening for them.

Does that mean, that some songs and albums are "kick ass" just because drummer is using a double bass a lot.. disregarding the fact that those same songs in a whole sound like a sh*t?

Uhhh, YUHHH!!!!! About time SOMEONE realizes that music is not about just a single musician, but about the song.

Correct again that these "machines" won't be remembered for their music, most likely won't be remembered at ALL due to their lack of songs to remember them by.

Instrument prowess is great, when put into a context that makes them shine and makes them rememberable, but for every drummer playing "600 BPM" there are a dozen others doing it too, also to inferior music, putting the drummers in a soup that will hardly boil any of them to the top to be noticed and remembered.

Take a tip from Derek Roddy, as awesome as his extreme drumming is, he can still play in a blues band playing a double shuffle and swingin' like a bastid!! Ya know why?? He's a musician!!

Check his YouTube if you think I'm kidding.

Just my 6¢

For me in metal, it begins and ends with Dave Lombardo. The guy is quite simply a master and was ahead of his time...not to mention he improved from album to album, which I think is vital. He's also a good guy.

Other metal drummers I really dig

-Lars Ulrich (it's Metallica, come on)
-Gar Samuelson (RIP to the original 'Deth drummer)
-John Tardy (one reason to listen to death metal...the drumming, not a blast beat merchant, but really cool drummer)

tomas haake for sure

also i know hes been metioned a few times here but Dirk Verbeuren is an amazing drummer.
He is very underated imo though. He currently playes for soilwork, scarve and one way mirror aswell as being a drum teacher in MAI in france. I saw him live with soilwork supported by one way mirror whom he also plays for. i gotta say he is just amazing how he could play two sets like that was insane he has great technical far superior to the likes of chris adler and joey etc, and the far he has leart afican and latin styles of drumming amoungst others shows hes very versatile, which may be the reason why hes a very sought after session drummer.
I dont see how he isnt listed in modern drummers top 5 metal drummers where chris adler and joey are in 4th and 5th position i think.

But apart from that i agree with modern drummer saying that tomas haake is the best metal drummer

David Silveria - Korn (Hope he never comes back to Korn, new albums are total shit and I say let Korn R.I.P)
Martin Lopez - Opeth
Martin Axenrot - Opeth (Listen to Watershed...)
Virgil Donati - Planet X (I know he plays in many other's but Planet X is where he is most inspiring to me.)
Yan Maillard - Dominici (Great upcoming drummer.)
Ed Warby - Ayreon (A. Lucassen: Robot with a human touch.)

I know these are not all even that metal, but these are great drumme's who can and sometimes play metal. I just couldn't decide.

mike portnoy is probably one of the most innovative metal drummers of all time, but my favorite metal drummer would probably have to be either Danny Carey or The Rev.

Gene Hoglan
Tommy McKinnon
Lars Ulrich

Sorry but personally I dislike Slip Knot. Just my opinion though, I definitely would have to say that George Kollias from Nile is the best hands down. Not only for his unbeatable speed but also his ability to play different styles of metal and blast beats. I could go on and on.

Best metal drummer has to be no metal drummer at all :)

I'm sorry I dislike metal.

Although "best" is obviously subjective I don't get most of picks in here. MY favrourite metal drummers right now:

Jamie Saint Merat - Ulcerate (look up vids in youtube right now)
Sean Reinert - Cynic
Navene Koperweis - Animals as Leaders/Animosity
John Longstreth - Origin
Roddy

Kolias is good for speed and brutality, but he doesn't put down the most interesting or creative beats. For that I'd say that Scorched is along the right lines. I love metal, but the majority of metal drummers sound like each other, the only difference is what tempo's they can hold. People like Reinhert, Navene Koperweis and Asgeir Mickelson (for his work with Spiral Architect) are untouchable in terms of creativity and are miles ahead of most metal drummers.

Derek Roddy
George Kollias
Jordan Mancino

Amongst my favourites, but theres plenty of amazing metal drummers out there, so the list could just go on and on :)

I'm sorry I dislike metal.

that's a shame, you probably could have learn't alot from the genre and improved as a musician if you weren't as close minded. just like i have learn't alot from listening to pop music.

anyway, yeah. recently i've gone back to shannon lucas, black richardson, old opeth etc. oh and death too. yeah hoglan is a beast always, reinert is good too. will be posting covers of some stuff off miasma/nocturnal/colors/great misdirect on youtube soon. will probably post some deathcore/metalcore stuff up too, but that stuff is a little boring tbh. think i might take some old killswitch engage and add some blast beats and stuff for lolz.

if anyone enjoys playing 'faster' metal drumming (i.e. 220+) then check out some breakcore. some of it is like death metal/drum and bass crossover. very good for practicing rudiments too (and making crazy jungle beatz).

oh i'll also cover tool too, but i don't have a mandala yet so Right In Two is gonna sound crap.
