My personal favorites would have to be brooks wackerman (hott potty, bad religion) tony palermo (pulley) paolo (beerbong) and todd henning (death by stereo)
I beleive all of these drummers are a lot better than 5 or 6 drummers that are on drummerworld.com. And whats sickening is that they arn't!
Anything to add about these 4?

Meh the Pulley guy really isn't special. however i am a pulley fan.
You dont think so? I think the last two albums (the ones that he plays on) althought not a lot of complex stuff, the way the music is, he knows a lot of beats and styles taht go one with each s ong, and he makes of them sound really good. I figure that is a good indication of a how good a drummer really is. But thats just me.
P.S. I do think hes better than travis barker :)

Derek Grant from Alkaline trio is one of the best punk drummers out there IMO.
I second that. I also like his playing a lot, and their last two albums - the only ones he plays on - are very good. I don't know how popular they are, but they're worth a try if you don't know them.
Well-placed fills, nice use of cymbals, and a solid backbeat. He is very good.
Eric Ghint from NOFX.
And Moonchild:
Punk drumming can get pretty tough, partly because it can get really fast. It might be simple beats sped up, but try playing along to NOFX's "the decline" and don't forget the gatorade!
I'm not really into punk anymore, that was more during high school, but I still like the stuff I used to listen to like Propaghandi and Strung Out.
Oh, yeah, Josh Freese. He's a punk drummer and just about any kind of drummer he wants, lol

Robo, Bill Stevenson, the dude who played on 'Red Tape' by Circle Jerks....It's true there's not much technique to the style, it's all about endurance and hitting as hard as possible. Punk is supposed to be sloppy & out of control anyway, that's what makes it punk. Imagine old school Misfits with a really good drummer on it, wouldn't be the same....

Derek Grant from Alkaline Trio is probaby my favourite punk drummer.
Aaron Solowoniuk from Billy Talent is also very good.

kudos for mentioning Todd Hennig of Death by Stereo man, I wish more people knew about him, really amazing style. Jon Sortland of Cigar is absolutely incredible, super fast and tight, with very creative fills and drums, check out the clips at http://www.cigartheband.com
Also check out Bomer Manzullo (RIP) of RKL, he really pushed punk rock drumming to the next level in the 80s. www.rkl.com

This is the worst part about Drummerworld. Even Grant Collins (look him up on this very site, the most amazing Aussie drummer, and my teacher) said something along the lines of "It's great when I teach you, because you are all about the music. A lot of my students are really technically proficient drummers, but they don't wanna talk about anything except for really complex jazz and stuff. Sometimes you just need a good 4 piece kit and rock the xxxx out".
That's exactly what punk is all about. Attitude, style, complexity within simplicity, playing for the song, not to show off your chops.
So many morons on this board come here and rag out punk drummers entirely, because they don't get it. That's ignorance, plain and simple. Far too many people take pride in their ignorance.
There are so many amazing punk drummers out there, for varying reasons. Tastefulness, speed, attitude, style. These are attributes that ANY drummer out there needs to possess to take that leap from "Very proficient drummer" to "Amazing drummer". Just because you don't understand the greatness of simplicity, and more importantly, the ability to play just for the music, don't rag it out. Punk is just as much a genre as everything else, so don't rag on dudes because they don't have a 15 piece drumkit and play in some bizarre time signature like Portnoy or Carey. They're great, but so are these guys.
That said, my favorites:
Derek Grant from Alkaline Trio - pure style, tastefulness, just amazing to watch and listen to
Drummer for Alexisonfire - more of an emo band I guess, but still, this guy plays HEAVY music, but he plays it with so many different influences, it's just an assault on your senses
Warren from Against Me! - The best goddamn band on the planet. 4 piece kit, Ride, Hi-hats, nothing else. So very simplistic, but anything else would be a travesty, as it would RUIN the music. This guy is like a big, bearded ball of energy, and while what he's playing is fairly simple, he plays it FEROCIOUSLY. Amazing
Drummer from The Descendents - This guy is awesome. Plays your standard punk fare... but just a little more complex, a little more proficient. In my opinion, replace the drummer and bassist from this band, and they wouldn't have come very far at all. They make the band.
Dangerous Darrin - Goldfinger - This guy was right up there for the best punk drummer of 2005 in MD, and it shows. His kit resembles a metal kit more than a punk kit, and sometimes, he plays it like one! The guy brings so much to the table for the band, it's incredible. Great fills, great sense of time / speed for the music, and some awesome double bass work where you just wouldn't expect it. Creative, and HILARIOUS to watch too!
Good Riddance Drummer - Speed and ferocity. Like a big ball of hate behind the kit. Excellent hand speed, excellent fills, just brutally quick.
Josh Freese - The Vandals - ...Do I need to explain myself? It's Josh Freese ferchrissake!

I really like avail, paint it black, kid dynomite, alkaline trio, and hot water music. and although many feel that this genre of music is easy, it's just about having a great time. the great punk drummers do what is key, and that is FIT THE MUSIC.
I play a lot of punk and you can judge my playing...
www.myspace.com/etceteraband
I also played for a professional wedding band in New York City for 5 years, so to judge a drummer for playing on a record that is a specific style is unfair to the musician. They are just doing what they enjoy...I'm sure many punk drummers don't record with punk bands because they want to be known as the best drummer ever, they do it 'cause they love it.

TOPPER HEADON!!!
I can't belive it! Two pages and no Clash fans! This guy was so inventive when other punks of that era were staying so simple. Check out any song on London Calling and you'll see what I mean. He also recorded lots of overdubs in is playing (shakers, bongos, ect.) that gave The Clash's music a distinct sound throughout the album.

yes topper had some insane grooves. out of all these punk bands very few people have mentioned any of the classics. these would be topper of the clash, marky ramone or tommy ramone of the ramones, billy ficca from television, marc bell from richard hell and the voidoids, scott asheton of iggy and the stooges, and paul cook of the sex pistols. most of the guys think of punk as the extremely fast and angry music look to the roots of punk rock and see what it was all about and see if you change your mind.

I've always been fond of Clash's Topper Headon, but I also enjoy the playing of The Minutemen's George Hurley. His playing isn't your typical punk drumming, in that he has a very funky\jazzy technique which seems to be very rare in punk music. To my knowlege, The Minutemen were one of the most technically proficient punk bands of the 80's.
Another punk drummer I really enjoy is Naked Raygun's original drummer, Jim Colao. He also has somewhat of a jazzy technique, but very powerful and tense, and adds much energy and forward motion to the music.

What about the drummer of Pennywise. I don't listen them a lot anymore, but he's truly amazing. Never how he could stand a whole show playing like he does !
Earl Hudson is one of my biggest influence !! He does have a short solo on the song Coptic Times by the Bad Brains, listening it live on "The Youth Are Getting Restless" album, you realise this guy has a huge amount of control and power !

although he doesnt get a lot of credit, Andrew Hurley from Fall out Boy is a very talented drummer. David Douglas from Relient K is also very good. i think the reaosn why i love punk and thier drummers is because when they play live they always give it their all, and it is obvious that they love music and they love what they are doing. Lane Pederson from the Dillinger Four is also a very fun drummer.

I can't believe it hasn't been mentioned already, but Jordan Burns of Strung Out/ first three Pulley records has to be one of the best punk drummers going. He cites Neil Peart as his biggest influence and you can hear it in a lot of the more recent Strung Out stuff. Check out the drumming through Strung Out's 8 track ep "The Element of Sonic Defiance", particularly the drumming to track 1: "Mission to Mars", the middle of track 2: "Scarecrow", the verses in track 4: "Blew", track 6: "Razorblade" and track 8:"Mephisto" - these songs are all brilliant punk/ metal. Their latest album "Exile in Oblivion" has some awesome drumming on it too, particularly track 10: "Never Speak Again". It's all too easy to say "punk is just about playing fast" - this guy not only plays fast, he embellishes with some awesome fills, some awesome double bass chops, hi hat/ ride tricks... he's just really good. OK fair enough, their album Suburban Teenage Wasteland Blues from 1996 is pretty much all about how fast he could go, but everything since has been far more technical... It took me ages to learn to play "Razorblade" all the way through. I love that song. Then there's tracks like "Too Close To See" and "Reason to Believe"... seriously, check them out, he's brilliant.
Besides him all the good ones have been mentioned I think, even the late great Derrick Plourde has seen his name mentioned. He was truly stunning. Wish I could've seen one of the bands he was in.

He had a label for a short time and put out a compilation of punk bands doing covers of Sesame Street songs. That has to be one of the punkest albums of all time, alongside his band Schlong covering the musical West Side Story.

i guess it depends on your definition. Blink 182, Green Day and the Offspring are prime examples of mainstream pop punk, but bands like say Alkaline Trio or the Descendents are def pop punk too, except they do it in a purer form because they arent ballgripped by major record labels. its not an insult, its just not real punk.. sounds nothing like it.

Aside from Bad Religion, I haven't heard of any of these bands. The reason why these drummers aren't on drummerworld.com is because their bands are incredibly obscure. I'll bet they still put their music out on vinyl, just to make a statement.
I'm a big fan of The Minutemen and especially George Hurley. I think he did the best job of anyone of bringing a jazz sensibility to punk drumming.

Just because you don't know about them doesn't mean they are obscure. Most college students don't know what the gulag was or the dates of the American Civil War, but "obscure" doesn't seem like the right term for those two things.

Well, as far as making the drummerworld.com list, all of the people there have made a big impact on music in some way, either playing with a famous bands or revolutionizing the way other people approach or view the instrument.
If a college student is more familiar with obscure punk bands than fourth-grade American history, they're dumb. But a lot of adults would fail a basic civics test anyway.

Why on earth would anyone want to sing like a beast? Beasts are not exactly renowned for their singing ability.
If you want to use a mythical organism as comparison to tell us how great his singing is, surely "voice of an angel" would be more appropriate?

Also, Atom Willard (sp?) now in Angels and airwaves played some sick punk stuff with the offspring.. Always very dependable and powerful.

Topper Headon is one of my favorite rock drummers of the 1970's. He has tremendous versatility, and "Train in Vain" has one of the best grooves in the history of rock n' roll!

Pete Hines (Cro-Mags, Murphy's Law) is a stand-out, imo.
Mackie Jayson- Cro-Mags, Bad Brains
Speed and Style. Vicious drummer.
Paul Cook of the Sex Pistols is good

George Hurley - Minutemen/Firehose (not Firehouse)
Adam Wade - Shudder To Think/Jawbox
Bill Stevenson - Descendents
Grant Hart - Husker Du
George Rebelo - Hot Water Music
I think Hurley takes the cake though.

WHAT A THREAD! I am a huge punk rock fan and no matter what anyone says, I always will be. I love everything from hardcore, to pop-punk (not Simple Plan, I'm talking Green Day, Screeching Weasel, etc). I have always said that most punk drummers are good, but traditional drummers just wont have it. I will now list my favorites and WHY they are better then most regular drummers.
Josh Freese- This guy is amazing. I personally love his work with The Vanals (Euro-Barge anyone?) but his work with A Perfect Circle. Nine Inch Nails and more are great. Although he has been with almost every band ever, I still qualify him as a punk drummer. His chops are mad fast and smooth.
Brooks Wackerman- Although his brother Chad takes up a "Bozzio" type style, Brooks' style takes no nonsense. He is fast, furious, and his double bass work is really good. I really like the newer Bad Religion stuff, and his drumming is always enjoyable.
George Hurley- Wowee. The first time I heard Double Nickles on the Dime I was amazed. The beginning of "Vietnam" always gets me. His style is very jazzy and smooth, although he is erratic at times. I really like how he completely drives the Minutemen's sound. He mixed with Mike Watt so well that it's not even funny. What a great drummer.
Earl Hudson- This guy is better then most thrash drummers. He is one of the fastest drummers I have ever heard. I remember watching the "Live At CBGB's" DVD and seeing that guys guns. He literaly gets exercise when he drums because of how fast he plays. If he was in Metallica, they would be so much better. Just my thoughts.
Erik Sandin (Smelly) - Nofx was one of my favorite bands when I was 11 years old, and they really still are. They have more skill then most "non-punkers" would imagine. Just listen to "The Decline" for proof. His right foot and left hand are literally the fastest in punk. His playing is so smooth. I have always been a fan, and always will be.
Derrick Plourde- May I first say, R.I.P. Know as an amazing person, Derrick was a huge loss to the punk rock community. I remember being really sad when he died, even though I was only 12 or 13. His drumming style was much like Smelly's, quick and smooth. Trashed, Hoss and Duh are all classics. Unfortunatly, he suffered from Bi-Polar disorder, which made him take his life... R.I.P.
Byron McMackin- An endorser of Axis pedals, his footwork sure as hell shows it. Most of Pennywises stuff after 2001 wasn't that good in my opinion, but that doesn't change the fact that his drumming is still top notch.
Dave Mello- Operation Ivy is my absolute favorite. Dave's style takes much endurance and is very bouncy and fun. Unfortunatly he didn't really do anything after Op. Ivy, but that doesn't change the fact that he is great.
Bill Stevenson- Ah what a nerdy great drummer. The Descendents are great, All is great, Black Flag is great, etc. He uses the ride cymbal in the coolest ways. I love Bill's producing as well!
Well, there you go. This truley is the best thread ever. I would mention some other drummers, but this is only my starter list. Interesting fact, Duff from Guns N' Roses was in a punk band in the Mid 80's from Seattle called the Fartz. I have their discography, but they aren't anything to call home about. Thanks!

Some of my favorites from my 80's punk days were
Earl Hudson Bad Brains
Josh Sinder Accused
Carlos Cadona Dead Kennedys
Felix Griffin DRI
I always thought Black Flag, MDC, Circle Jerks had good drummers as well.
The guy who played for Cryptic Slaughter was kinda funny, I think they called it "drunk drumming"

Clem Burke is definitely one of my faves. Although I don't think Blondie was really all that punk. I think they were just lumped in due to the time and place they came out of. I'm also a fan of Paul Cook. I used to cover "Pretty Vacant","God Save the Queen" and "EMI" about12-13 yrs. ago and they were really fun.

Yeah the Buzzcocks drummer, John Maher, was amazing. Also love Topper Headon of the Clash and Paul Cook from Sex Pistols. And Marky Ramone of course.
The guy from propagandhi, I forget his name though.
Jord Samolesky.
I'm really kinda surprised that a search for his name comes up with nothing on these forums. Some great players mentioned in this thread and he gets one (vaugue) mention.
In my opinion, his name should be mentioned with the likes of Derrick Plourde and Dave Raun.

Not sure how close to other peoples definition of punk this is, but I really used to like a drummer called Sal Abruscato. He played on the first few Type O Negative releases (not really punk I know) but is better known for his work in Life of Agony, a prominent new york hardcore punk band.
I managed to dig this up on youtube, worth watching if you have an interest in such things,

I'm glad Bill Stevenson is recognized. I can't think of a better one. George Hurley is great; I don't consider him a punk drummer though.
Is Blink 182 a punk band? Maybe I'm old, but their music doesn't sound like punk to me at all.
If Blink 182 punk, then I guess other good punk drummers would be Derek Longmuir from the Bay City Rollers, Zac Hanson from Hanson and Ryan Dusick from Maroon 5.
