Anyone know for real? ...some say 20" ride, but looks smaller in pics. I got the "Beatle Gear" book, but it only mentions kick sizes. Also, his crash, what size, type ..I'd sure like to know.

Well, I don't know much about the sizes, but as for the types, I am fairly sure that cymbals came in just one type. Basically there were crashes and rides. Due to the fact that there were no mechanized systems for making cymbals back then, they were all hand made and any one could sound completely different from another.

Based on what I've read in the past and from observing photographs it seems Ringo used Zildjian cymbals in the following sizes 14" hi-hats, 18" medium thin crash and either 18" or 20" ride. No mention of rivets in the ride. There is also an entry in an old expense report alluding to the purchase of a "set" of Paiste cymbals sometime in 1963-64 although it seems uncertain of the amount of use those may have had.

from zildjian's site: (http://www.zildjian.com/EN-US/artists/artistDetail.ad2?artistID=2627&genreID=)

"Ringo has always been an advocate of the "A Zildjian" line, using them on all of the

classic Beatles recordings, but he has recently mixed in some new K's to his set-up. He

still uses his 20" A Zildjian Medium Ride from the 1960's..."

Ah.... The "Beatles Gear" book! Love it. I've read that a hundred times in the last year. As for the Paistes, in the early Beatle days, Ringo had their equipment manager Mal Evans get his cymbals for him, and Mal got Paistes. However, in 1964, I believe, Ringo picked up a 20" Zildjian ride in America, liked the sound, and switched to Zildjian. I'm pretty sure that is the story.

The typical set-up of the day featured the 60s New beats (much different than those of today) 18 crash/ride (lots of guys had rivets in this one) and a 20" crash/ride. Paiste got a lot of business back then too with its 602s. Ringo really got famous though with the Ludwig/Zildjian kit. In fact he's the main reason Ludwig and Zildjian sales exploded in the 60s (though certainly not the only one). A similar set-up in cymbals was used by everyone for rock and roll as it was for jazz (until a few guys started picking up the Turkish Zildjians) because the cymbals were handmade to be fantastic. Of course these were the celebrity models but those given out to the general public weren't too bad either.
