To be honest...every drummer has inspired me...
i mean you learn most things from the drum-stars but once you notice a mere mortal play something amazing you just want to get closer to that playing so you go back to your Bonham poster (or that of anybody else) and practice under his watchfull gaze.
I once went to see Dave Weckl...he came to my country for two night and a clinic (i have to say i missed the clinic because of school responsibilities) ... after i saw him play, i went home around 1 a.m and i practised...
i must say, i dont practise that much...it seems i need a boost like that every now and then to get back to practising...but i cant expect mr. Weckl to come by every day, now can I?

i agree with seras...i am inspired by many drummers and utilize their techniques in my own playing. in my early days chad sexton of 311 inspired me...now it is more danny carey of tool. that entire band is just somthing else...very original and very powerful.

Hello, I am a new member in this forum.. I am reallly not pleased (Unless they are all in alphabetical order) That Neil is the middle if not last drummer on peoples like list of drummers. I mean, sure he's pretty old now, but I mean.. Give the guys some respect. Have you seen his 2 kid's and wife? Of course not, because they're DEAD sadly.. But any ways here are all my favorite drummer's.

Lars Ulrich - (Metallica)

Buddy Rich
Dave Lombardo
Danny Carey
Thomas Lang
Shannon Larkin (he may not be the best..but i find he's very underrated, he play's in godsmack by the way..not the mention sully, the singer is pretty killer at drums as well. His energy he has while playing drums is pretty incredible, he looks like he wants to dance the night away lol)

Joey is good, but not up there with Gene, Haake, Reinert, Flo, Christy, and so on. Maybe later on in his career. Slipknot's self tittled CD was good. IMO everything after that is poop.

Neil Peart - (RUSH)

Lars Ulrich - (Metallica) I think you may be taking this all a little to seriously Neil Peart is probably my all time favorite drummer and it was tragic what happened to his family. This however doesnt in any way make him more or less worthy to be someones favorite drummer. Thats why its favorite different people have different tastes. I think the fact that Neil is listed by more people than any other on this list not 100% sure but it seems like it says an awful lot about the respect for this man. Any way my list. Neil Peart for precision technique and flawless time, vision and creativity. Although I dont feel his style shows much in my playing. He has always been the reason I have wanted to play drums. Others would include Danny Carey, Terry Bozzio, Dennis Chambers, Steve Smith, Keith Moon, Gene Krupa, Vinnie Colauta, Billy Cobham, Stewart Copeland, Steve Gadd, Dave Garibaldi, Philip Fisher(Fishbone) and Danny Heifetz(Mr. Bungle). And as of late John Dolyman sp?

I`ve just bought marco minnemanns dvd "extreme drumming" and this guy is just incredible, his independece with the four of his limbs(two legs two feet)is really amazing...e.g. with the left hand he is playing something in 5/8 while he`s doing a tomb melody in 7/8 ...and than he adds crazy stuff with the feet.
Dave Weckel is also a great drummer and probably one of the most versatile, i also have his dvd "natural evolution" which i consider not so informative and helpful, but anyway dave is great.
Well there are so many extremely good drummers, it`s hard to pick some
Everyone is looking for his little space(kind of music, special patterns) where he is expert.
Danny Carey has also very nice drumming, but i`d say that thomas haake of meshuggah is playing far more difficult stuff, listening to meshuggah can really make you dizzy

Gerald Heyward makes the cleanest beats with the hi-hat.
Akira Jimbo is has amazing control over his limbs.
TONY ROYSTER JR. is jus all around amazing to me. I saw the clip of him when he was 12, and if he was that good wit complete control over his hands and feet, he has got to be the best drummer now. I think he's like 21 or somethin.

I am sure when the bass pedal was invented some drummers said "He's playing bass with his feet and snare with his hands! That's cheating!".
but yet they grew acustomed to it and it is now absolute standard for a drum kit, so why should we be afraid of new things?

Mike Portnoy, one of my personal heores...

-Dale Crover... can you say Melvins! I recommend them live...
-Tim Alexander...I just love this guy, all of his work is so unique, his live solos with primus on their last tour was EPIC!
-Dave Weckle...Master plan is so cheesy and so GREAT, i love every second, hes not affraid to kick a*s!
-Gavin Harrison...Have you heard this guy? check out his DVD rythmic visions. light touch mixed with killer chops and power fills, rock!
-Jack DeJohnette...I have to admit, at my current age i'm still struggleing with the "comprehension" of jazz, i've have allways loved listened, but have never really got a chance to play it. anyways, this guy is just amazing and has really helped me out in jazz land. But my absolute favorite is Louie Bellson. Man can he play. I love how he structures his solos. There was one were he did a nice roll on the snare. He started out loud and then played real soft but fast. It looked like he was hardly moving his wrist, just his fingers to control the sticks. I also like how he uses his base drums. Jeff Pocaro!!
Gary Husband!!
Vinny Colaiuta (sp?)
Dom Famularo
Greg Bisonette (sp?)

Most underrated current drummer:
Matt Chamberlain. He is a studio drummer, that you can tell immediately who it is playing (if you know him to start with). He also tours with Tori Amos.
Check out his drumming on Sara Evans "Born to Fly" , Wallflowers "Bringing Down the Horse", John Mayer "Heavier Things", and several others.
Bernhard has a link to him on the main page.

My all time favourite drummer is Tim Alexander from Primus. He's got a very special feel wich is so unique. He doesn't show off to much, but has tendence to play an impossible rythm and make it turn during 5 minutes without getting boring, just changing accents and intensity. He has the most sensitive touch trough Hi-Hats.
Danny Carey is also one of my many fav, but I think he has done with Tool one of the most elevating song that I actually use like drug to trip me the further I can which is the song AENIMA. from the beginnig till the end, everything is surprising and original but you can't imagine something better to fit in it.
In the middle part, Danny does just this double bass/Toms rythm patterns with such finess and independance, added by the words "Learn to swim" moving around yer head, it all make, lyrics and music, this song in my opinion one of the biggest monuments in actual music.
Other favourite drummers without an unending description:
Michael giles (King Crimson)
Ian Paice
Billy Cobham
Ron Howden (Nektar)
Nick Mason
Idris Muhammad
Tony Williams
Earl Hudson (Bad Brains)
Jack DeJohnette
Cozy Powell
Jimmy Chamberlin
Dan Peters (Mudhoney)
Matt Cameron
Chris "Daddy" Dave
Andrew Small (Massive Attack)
AirwarikiaR (Ulver)
Maik (Nostromo)
Phil Selway (Radiohead)

Matt Abts is one of the most impressive drummers i have ever seen, he is fairly unknown but is a monster player. Hopefully somday he can join the ranks of the elite on Drummerworld.com.

Gene Krupa
Steve Gadd

oops, i forgot one....Dave Laing of The Joe Sullivan Big Band....(Joe Sullivan is my Father...)
this guy is prob one of the top ten jazz drummers in canada, but he doesnt play in very famous bands, in fact hes only in my dads band....if anyones going to the montreal jazz fest, theyre playin july 8th at 9 and 11 at night on one of the big outside stages. Ive discussed drumming many times with this guy and hes just amazing....also, im known as his roadie since i always get to the shows early and set up the drums for him so that i can have my fun...
I was there on the 6th actually, I watched a pretty interesting jazz trio, Drummer, guitarist, and a b3 ( which was also covering the bass lines ), unfortunatly I was so tired, and had drinken a little too much Stella artois that I couldn't even analyse what was going on near the end of the set...

I wont go into detail on the jazz and early guys, damn there's just too many, i'll just stick to modern. I'd say my absolute top guys are.
Weckl
Gadd
Vinnie
Donati
(these guys just have such incredible feel and musicality when it comes to drums, something very rare. Sure loads of guys have chops, but no-one play's with the pocket Gadd plays with.)
and then...
Portnoy
Jarzombek
Peart
Lang
Greg Bissonette
DiCenso
Garibaldi
Smitty
Steve Smith
Omar
Jeff

Jeff Porcaro; and I had to scroll through 22 posts to see him mentioned here - what's going on dudes?? :)

Two reasons. He's no longer living and Toto.
On a side note, Toto is giving a free concert at Mohegan Sun casino in CT tomorrow night. The Porcaro family grew up in the Hartford area resulting in a PACKED room. And it's not your Mother's Toto. Simon Phillips drives that band in a way that Jeff Porcaro never did.

Sorry, I didn't realise dead drummers were excluded. Nor, looking at the lists, did quite a few others.

Toto wrote some unbelievably cheesy and awful songs, without doubt. There's no point us getting into a Porcaro/Phillips argument, because you clearly have different requirements for what you like in a drummer. However, if you've only ever heard studio Toto, I would suggest you watch their Live in Paris DVD; Jeff definitely kicks the band in that one, and the overall sound is much fatter. It's also a lesson in groove, taste and everything else he was famous for. I'd also just like to check you know he did quite a bit more in his career than play with Toto...?! Here's hoping.

Hey, there's plenty of great drummers I don't like sometimes. Just to really get the flames going, I've never been too partial to Tony on "Four and More" myself for some inexplicable reason. But Art Blakey is pretty inarguably a master of swing. I've never been a big fan of his soloing, but in all honesty I've never been a big fan of soloing at all so I don't really care about that part. His time playing is everything for me, and that's amazing...

I agree totally with everything. The only comment about Porcaro/Phillips is that Simon's playing really fits the band better (IMO) because of the direction Lukather has taken the band. For the Porcaro fans, Roseanna simply isn't the same. :D

To OliverLawford - don't worry, you are forgiven ;) Jeff forever!!
To Mlehnertz - I do have a TOTO album with Phillips somewhere, Mindfields I think it's called, and I was impressed that he (at that stage anyway) restrained his playing to fit the TOTO sound. I was familiar with him from Luke's solo stuff, which although hilarious (what's that track in 17/8?? It makes me giggle) wouldn't really have fit in with TOTO songs. I've never heard how he deals with playing original Jeff stuff like Africa or Rosanna, and, well, I don't think I ever want to. And that is meant as no disrespect to Simon Phillips; hell, you wouldn't have caught me taking over Jeff's drum seat, even if I had been asked...dream on Womble hohoho.
mlehnertz
09-04-2005, 11:00 PM
He doesn't deal with it. I'm a huge fan of Simon Phillips but he will never replace Jeff Porcaro. To his credit, he doesn't really "try" to copy the feel of Roseanna because simply I think he knows he never can duplicate that groove. Or Africa. It was Jeff Porcaro's signature groove.
But listen to Simon play "Jake to the Bone". Holy crap. Porcaro never had chops like that.

Where do I begin.. well it all starts with guys who are all about groove and feeling and who I aspire to be like more than the "chops masters":
Bernard Purdie
Steve Gadd
Clyde Stubblefield
Jabo Starks
The great drummers of Motown: Uriel Jones, Richard "Pistol" Allen, Benny Benjamin
Then I like guys who while they might be alittle different in how they approach the instrument, some more showy than others, I like guys who are unique and do things their own way and inspire me to try and make the instrument my own:
Billy Ward (a HUGE influence on me. Nothing makes me want to overcome my challenges and try new things more than him. If you read this BW, thanks man :) )
John Blackwell
Johnny Rabb
Then just a random list of other drummers who I love:
Neil Peart
Benny Greb
Opus (Gargantua Soul..CT based band, now kaput)
Eric Hand (great metal drummer from my high school days for a band in NH called die.right.mind. Again, now broken up.
Liberty DeVito
Stewart Copeland
Dom Famularo
My old teacher, Don Kirby
and the list goes on..

10. Billy Kilson (fantastic on Dave Holland Quintet's "Not for nothin'" record)

Simply never ever going to get a charcter or drummer of that kind,I know not the most skillful but for sheer showmanship and compashion towards drumming is truely inspritional, his speed is also crazy the who live at leeds album is just unbeliveable. He changed the way we play today.

Tony Williams, Dennis Chambers, Mike Portnoy, John Bonham, Ian Paice, Bobby Previte, Joey Baron, Simon Phillips, Will Calhoun and Jack DeJohnette. and that list is in no particular order and by no means complete. My CD collection numbers about 4000 so there's quite a few more names that could be added.
