Sup folks. I am 16 and has been drumming for quite sometime now - a few months. I am a from singapore and is a self-taught drummer. (hopefully i'llhave some former lessons soon) Anyway, I will just like to ask all you drummer. Who is your favourite drummer?

Personally, I came into drumming is because of Tre Cool - drummer from Greenday. He can be referred as one of the best drummer in punk rock history. I like him not because of his funny antics on stage and stuff. It's the way he play the crashes and the way he does his fills. In short, his style. However, after some time into drumming, watching all the other drummers, I feel that Buddy Rich has become my favourite too. ( i can have 2 favourites!!! xD ) But I cannot really see Tre in the same light I see Buddy. They are very different in their own ways and styles. It's unfair you see. But the curious me still wants to know, what are you favourites. And why? Hahah.

hi im 15 (this year i turned it) ive been plying for a littel while i got into drumming because of joey jordison and pete sanderson (who is one of my fav drummers) joey just cus he has some cool beats and ideas. I paly double kick so pete and and kerl sanders are my to fav drummers cus of there double bass is around 250bpm (16th notes) and even faster in some of there songs, im not such a fan of tre cool but that cus i like death and heavy metal.

So yes you can have more than one favorite drummer. Also, just because you are young, doesn't mean you can't like older drummers/music, so I encourage you to listen to Steve Gadd and Vinnie and Porcaro and see what great drumming is all about.

When I started to play drums my first influence was Ian Paice I just loved his grooves and the music he played and the sound he has/had! Besides of rock music I listened to funk

Then I got into jazz music and fusion, actually as far as I remember myself, I allways loved jazz music, I'm addicted to swing! lol
My favourites became, Buddy Rich, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd, Billy Cobham, Joe Morello, Jack DeJohnette, Peter Erskine, Tony Williams, Steve Smith, Dennis Chambers, Horacio ''El Negro'' Hernandez, Dave Weckl etc (I'm quite sure I forgot someone!)

Then next huge influence on me was Jojo Mayer. I had a chance to participate in a jazz camp and he came as a clinican, weird but I didn't know anything about him, I have never heared him before and even more I thought electronic music was junk :-)

After his clinics I was totally flored, in that moment I lost all my idols, I thought nothing can impress me but oh boy I was so wrong!
The first thing that was mindblowing - his insane technical abilities (16th notes with left hand @ about 180 bpm? damn...) what is the main thing why people know him but I want to add that he is just a wonderfull musician!
he really made me a better drummer/musician, it was a huge turning point in the way I think and the way I see things

Now I'm still into the love of my life - jazz music and besides of that I play live electronic music :-)

My favourites of my favourites right now are:
Jojo Mayer;
Peter Erskine (for me he is absolutely the best jazz drummer),
Steve Smith (wonderfull teacher with insane technique and high level of musicality)
Steve Gadd (the moment you start to learn his groovs you understand that you won't be able to play them as he does, this man is ''The Groove'' himself heh);
Joe Morello (a true legend and a master of drum set)
Vinnie Colaiuta (you want insane technique combined with great groove? Vinnie is the man!)
Dennis Chambers (you want to heare mindblowing solos and nasty grooves? Gotta check out Dennis Chambers!)

also the leatest favourites are Antonio Sanches, Rodney Holmes has come to my attention, also Keith Carlock and Wolfgang Haffner (probably not many people have heared him, but it is worth to check out his records, really good drummer!) and of course - Dom Famularo, probably the best educator in the world and a pretty insane drummer!

Neat. That's cool. I saw some of JoJoMayer's videos. He is very good, I must admit. Talking about left hand, I am a left hander myself. But I play drums the right-handed way. Don't ask why. Lol. And yes, I will listen to more of the older drummers/music and hopefully, find out what real drumming is all about. I used to think that it is just constant wacking of the drums, creating cool sound. Which is obviously wrong. Lol. There is so much more to drumming that I don't know. Will have to need all those senior drummers guides and tips. Lol. Keep grooving!

Neil Peart, Joey Jordison, and Lars Ulrich are my favs...they all three kick major ass.

Neil is my all time favorite but Joey Jordison is an inspiration to me because hearing his playing in Slipknot drew me to playing a more metal sound on my drums. Plus the dude's fast as hell and he makes it sound great, no matter what other people say. Lars is a favorite because I'm a huge Metallica fan and he just has badass beats.

Another person I didn't list is Rick Allen of Def Leppard. I didn't put him as a favorite because I'm not really big on him but I consider him a hero. Just because after losing a freakin' arm he still wanted to play the drums and he did.

Apparantly you haven't heard of a drummer by the name of Neil Peart. If he isn't on your
list, no one should be, 'cept Mr. Bernard "Buddy" Rich! You mention Mike Portnoy, but

Most inspirational, no contest - Wilfrdo Reyes

Wilfredo played with David Lindley and El Rayo X. I have seen the best and after I got home after seeing him at a show I immediately ran to my drums to play. It was 1:00 AM. Not the best in chops or feel but there was something about him that just made me want to play.

Oh yes, I know... But (and I'm serious here) when I was listening to an album the other day, I realized that something that I really like that he brings out in his playing style is the way he uses rhythm. Something about the rhythms in his playing just really hooks me in particular, more than other pianists. I'm not sure exactly how to explain what I mean, but I guess piano is technically a percussion instrument anyway.

I so agree. Keith Moon had put so much energy in his playing. I hate when people say he wasn't clean or blah blah but you could read the energy in his playing. He's amazing to listen to.

My personal favorites are Stanton Moore aaaand... that's about it. Haha, any funk or jazz fusion drummer'll do.

You can do no wrong with your picks for favorite drummer(s). Remember, it's favorite, not best. To me, anyone can be a favorite, but I don't think anyone can be the best. There's just too many variables. There's always a drummer that can do what another cannot. Check out my articles (in one of my posts above) where I talk about this. My favorite is Neil Peart. Is he the best? Hard to say! Hard to measure.

Great point by you. To me, Alan White of Yes is one of those drummers. I think he's a great timekeeper and plays with a certain amount of flair (more so in his younger years than now). You won't hear drum solos from him, but what he plays fits perfectly with what Yes does. He's one of my favorites.

Too many good ones to list but here's a few that always stand out for me:

Jojo Mayer- he's a melt your face with blazing chops, creativity and GROOVE kind of drummer. I don't even have the words. He's at the top of my list these days. Just superhuman.

Marco Minneman- another uber talent. Hot damn if I could play as fast and as complex as he does!

Jon Fishman- For my money, one of the most underrated drummers. The guy had an unbelievable amount of stamina to match his excellent hands. He could groove with the best of them but he was so inventive. He created some very original rhythmic patterns for songs that easily could have been a basic 4/4 rock beat. Foam, Stash, Mango Song, Taste and so many more were really enhanced by his wanting to put in a unique beat pattern.

Stewart Copeland - Anyone too young to have heard of him or listened to the Police much should check him out for sure and anyone old enough to know him, knows. His personality just explodes through his playing. A drumming monster.

Danny Carey - All that off time, counter polyrhythmic power playing. It keeps me practicing and practicing and practicing and practicing.....incredible stuff.

Buddy Rich - The late great. I see videos of him now and marvel. Just killing it in his 60's. At least I know I have a long future with set playing.

There's a ton more and guys (and girls...Cindy Blackman) who I keep hearing about that I should get around to listening to (Jason Bittner, Chris Adler, etc) but these are the guys that have most influenced me and blow my mind.

Very well said. I'm always saying how my favs are people like Aquiles Priester and Neil Peart. Then, someone might say something like they are nothing compared to certain other drummers. my favourite drummers ever are
Gavin Harrison - musicianship,groove ad overall not only a great musician, but a truly genuine person;

Deen Castronovo - Power, technique and like Gavin, a great groove.Never too much,every fill,crash hit, is placed at right place.And he can sing in a amazing way.

Matt Sorum - He's not a techical drummer but he is rightfully in the rock history.But his musicianship is amazing.And i'd falled in love with Guns'n roses with him on drums.

i Think those players have heavily influenced me as musician.
Surely when someone hear me playing with my band, can find some fills of these drummers.
But i think this is not "copy and past", it is only the result of listening their albums and hours spended behind my drumkit with their songs in my ears.

Other than that theres Chad Smith from the chili peppers, Sean Kinney from Alice In Chains, Jimmy (The Rev) Sullivan from Avenged Sevenfold, Neil Pert from Rush, Phil Collins, and the drummer from Pearl Jam the name escapes me at the moment.
