Sticks, same brand, same size, big weight difference!

i prefer more lighter sticks over the heavy ones. i just cant stand the bulkyness in my hands, and i feel like i have more control with the smaller ones

I've found the Vic Firth sticks to be pretty consistent in weight and quality control. I use 5A and play a variety of styles. Mostly jazz but also some blues, rock, and pop.

After trying out a bunch over the last couple years , I found the Dave Weckl sticks to be the most comfortable to me. Now if I could only play like him..:)

Right now standing on Regal Tip 9As. They're like a 5A/5B hybrid size so fairly meaty and not horrendously heavy. Really nice sticks actually, pity the only people who sell them around here are utter pirates.

It depends on the gig for me. When I am doing the Acoustic gigs, I am playing a lot of blues, country and jazz. It's mostly Blasticks, Thai Sticks and Brushes for those gigs, but when I do have a few songs that I use sticks on I play with a thin 5A type model from Regal called the "Ride". it has a really cool ball tip that sounds nice on cymbals. But because it's a thinner stick I pick them out to be really heavy.
When I am playin rock gigs I use Regal's Metal-X and it's a really long and thick stick, but because they are so big, I pick them out really really light, so I don't feel like I am swinging a bat. They brake faster because of how light I get them, but at least I wont get tired out after 5 min. of playing them.

I will use just about anything in the 5B range. For practice I buy the Nova 5b's from musicians friend http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Nova-12Pair-Hickory-Drumsticks?sku=449870 these sticks are great for practice...they get chewed up pretty quick but they are cheap and you can by them 12 pair at a time.

I can use light to very heavy. Like 7A - Mike Magini Signature Sticks. Right now i am using Rushes 30th anniversary sticks. Boy those things are great! There pretty small but weigh more than they look.

i switch around, between, vic-firth and pro-mark, ahead.

i pick the vic's 5b for rock and soloing.
i use pro mark 5b cuz its like the same diameter but alil lighter. i use that for fast high hat stuff, like let there be rock (ac/dc) and fire your guns.

for slow rock or somthing i use ahead 5b or the tommy lee series.

Give the Vic Firth 8D size a look. It is a 7a diamter but 16" long like the 5a.

I like my VF HD9's. Its almost right in inbetween 5b and 2b. I hate thin sticks because It feels like you have no control over them. With bigger sticks I feel like I have total control (sounds stupid but its hard to explain)

Although I've always played Vic Firth sticks, after picking up a pair of Vater Manhattans I don't think I'll ever go back to playing with VFs*. For me, I have always had issues with the tips of Vic Firth sticks cracking vertically, and eventually turning into what I like to call "penciltips". This actually happened within the first two hours of using a brand new pair of Steve Gadd signatures, and I was pretty pissed about it. I'm pretty certain it came from a crash that admittedly I might have played sloppily, but I was amazed that one mistake was all it took to demolish Steve Gadd's signature stick.

But anyway, Vater Manhattans are simply put -- lovely. They have a very nice reach, they're not too thin like some jazz sticks, but they have a little beef behind them so that you know you're actually holding a pair of drumsticks, not chopsticks. I prefer ball tip over virtually every other style tip, because they bring out the best cymbal tones and sound just peachy on snare and toms. But the biggest selling point for me is this: I've logged more hours of play with my Manhattans than any other Vic Firth stick and haven't seen much of any wear on them -- keep in mind that I don't play jazz, I play funk and rock, AND I'm big on rimshots.







* I still love my VF Jazz Rakes and VF Iso-Phones. Plus the VF "Blades" look pretty intriguing as well.
