Sebastian (b.1977 Frankfurt/Main, Germany) has quickly made a name for himself throughout Germany as drummer and pianist.
While living in Frankfurt he was awarded a scholarship from the city of Frankfurt to attend workshops in New York City. Sebastian's teachers were Keith Copeland and Jo Thönes at the Fransz-Lizt School of Music in Weimar after which he moved to study at the Hans Eisler Conservatory in Berlin. Since then he became a important Voice in the Berlin Jazzscene.
Sebastian has played with a long list of great players including Lee Konitz, Till Brönner, Ack van Rooyen, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Eddie Henderson, Mark Murphy, Johannes Enders and Ernie Watts.
He toured to different Countrys like Italy, Spain, Portugal, Southamerica, Norway, Sweden, Japan, Malaysia, Turkey, U.K., U.S. and Russia.
He appears on over 20 CD Recordings and played on several international Festivals (German Jazzfestival, Jazzfest Berlin, Jazzbaltica, Gexto Jazzfestival in Spanien, Stuttgart Jazz Open ,Neuer Deutscher Jazzpreis, u.v.a..
Presently he is working with such different groups as „MERKUR“, Johannes Enders Trio, Kempendorff/Lang/Merk, Bartmes, Poetry Clan, Spaniol4, Walter Lang Trio, Kai Brückners "Micro Bazaar" and Mark Wyand Quartett.
In Berlin Sebastian worked together with Kalle Kalima, Carsten Daerr, Pepe Berns, Johannes Fink, Michael Wollny, Tilman Ehrhorn, Silke Eberhard, Daniel Erdmann, John Schröder, Uli Kempendorff, Benedikt Reidenbach, Christian Weidner and many more.
Since 2006 he is composing for is own Band „MERKUR“ which streches the Elbow from Contemporary Jazz to Alternative Rock.
Since October 2010 Sebastian Merk holds a professorship for Jazz/Rock/Pop drumming at the HfM „Carl Maria von Weber“ in Dresden.
