|From improvising with pencils, file cabinets, and metal stairs, to perusing junkyards for an emergency “kit,” Dony Wynn is an inventive and talented drummer. By the age of two, Dony knew that he was destined to be a drummer. He was instantly enamored with music when he heard his first Elvis Presley and Fats Domino records. One Christmas, he received a toy drum set. The next, more drums. He saw the Beatles and The Dave Clark Five on the Ed Sullivan show. Dony’s aspirations were set.
In his early teens, Dony was already playing with musicians who were much older than himself. Since he grew up in Southern Louisiana, Dony was automatically exposed to an array of gifted and successful musicians. While he was still in high school, he got the opportunity to play with Dr. John. It was with Dr. John that Dony went on his first U.S. tour.
Dony took a four year break from performing in order to further develop his technique. After this time, he did some work with Leo Nocentelli. He moved to Los Angeles and worked with Robert Palmer, Brooks and Dunn, Patti LaBelle, Wang Chung, Steve Winwood, and many other talented musicians.
This work with various artists took Dony around the world. While on tour, he sent postcards out to friends and family. These small, yet amazing cards led Dony to writing, after being asked numerous times by the recipients if he ever planned on writing further. In 1992, Dony was on another break from drumming and living on a friend’s ranch, handling all the necessary chores to keep the ranch running. When autumn came and the chores became fewer and farther between, Dony decided it was time to pursue creative writing.
Dony managed to talk a college professor into accepting him into his class. Not having taken the SAT or attending any sort of college classes, this was a considerable achievement. The night after his first day of class, Dony wrote a thirty page short story. By the age of forty-four, he’d written his first novel.
Musician, writer, musicianDony has worked with many amazing artists and has done great work on his own. Dony is a born creator, no matter what the medium.
